Food waste is a hot topic, with findings suggesting that roughly 20% of all food put on the plates of Americans is thrown out every year, enough to feed 2 billion extra people annually. This shocking statistic highlights the inequality and inefficiency of the global food system, as well as the huge environmental cost that comes with this profligacy. A large proportion of produce is thrown out simply because it is slightly misshapen or has some minor blemish.

So when Chris Pratt confessed on Instagram recently that when he was a waiter at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company he would eat the leftover shrimp on people’s plates on his way back to the kitchen, he was actually doing his bit to reduce the problem. His post sparked a discussion about the rights and wrongs of this habit, with many people horrified by the thought of eating other people’s food.

Pratt also touched on another issue in his short post about his time working as a server, that of tipping. For many non-Americans, it can seem a baffling system that sows confusion and resentment if not done properly. Why not just pay people a fair amount in the first place? I worked with a poor foreign kid from a 3rd world country who would regularly eat off customer's plates. He thought we were nuts for not touching it. He basically never had to pay for food so to him it was a great bonus. It's literally a waste not to eat it. He's right, but it grosses me out so I never did it.

Eating out in the USA is ridiculous. Your prices don't show tax or tip. How is that fair? Pay your staff a decent wage, include it and the tax in the price so people know what to pay!

In the UK staff are paid at least minimum wage. Tips are a bonus for them, appreciated when recieved, but not expected. I dont have loads of money and earing out is a rare treat for me, but always leave something on the table. I cant believe some of the descriptions of serving jobs, where tips are supposed to make up most of people's income. Must be great to work in an establishment where $500+ for tables of four is the norm and you get 20% tips from them. However the basic wage should be a living wage. It must make guests feel uncomfortable, knowing that THEY are paying the staff and not the employers.

I really can't understand the logic in this. Servers and waiters should have a normal wage, they could live off. A tip should be a bonus to the waiter for exemplary service, not paying them because their boss won't. Fast and good service=tip. Rude service, wrong order=no tip.

Pretty much the guideline in the US is that there is service you tip 15% for, service you tip 20% for, and service so bad you report to the restaurant for.

20% is my default tip. Everyone gets it, unless the service was really foul. There are people who won't tip if there's an issue in the kitchen - and that's b******t. Why would you punish your waiter for something they have no control over? ..///... I've done that job and believe me, even if you're earning enough to feed yourself, the sheer tonnage of physical work involved is tip worthy.

How do tips work if you add it onto a card payment? - are they distributed equally among employees? In the UK it is more customary (not obligartory) to leave money on the table. But obviously the person who clears the dishes may not be the person you intended to reward for great service.

Tips belong to the server receiving them, but unscrupulous managers may demand tip-sharing. I always tip cash in case a manager is skimming, because they skim off of credit-card receipts.

A gratuity is not always a reward. In some states servers do not earn minimum wage. The employer gets to use the tips for that. https://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm

If we eat on a restaurant I always insists that we somehow give some tip but the tip depends on the server, if they are very accommodating, attentive and smiles even just a little will do.

No, just no. Servers should NOT be tipped. The industry should start paying their servers fair living wages. Stop making servers beg for their livelihood!

I tip people for services rendered, my hairstylist and tattoo artist make living wages but i still tip them. When getting married I tipped my photographer, caterer, DJ, and every other vendor for a service well done. I don't understand why we have no issues tipping these types of services but don't want to tip for food service.

I went to the US for a month and I tried not to go to restaurants because of this. Why should I be the one responsible for your salary? That's your job and unless you did something exceptional, you don't deserve more. If the salary was higher, I get that the food would also be more expensive but I'd be ok with that because at the end, I can decide beforehand if I want to eat there or not. And waiters saying "with the ton of people we have to deal with, we deserve a tip", I'd say "no you don't". That's the job you chose to do, you knew what it would entail. You can't do other jobs? That's a different issue. You chose to accept a job where you deal with people so don't complain when you do. Also, in that logic, you should tip cashiers, tech support, apparel shop sales people etc... Working in an office can also be very demanding too and where are the tips?

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. You don't want to pay people who depend on your money for survival, don't eat at restaurants. Your argument that people should get other jobs is as weak and morally bankrupt as your decision not to pay them.
