Woman Shocked After Realizing Her $700 Hairless Sphynx Cat Is Actually A Regular Cat That Was Shaved

Someone in Alberta is scamming buyers by selling them shaved kittens as if it were of the hairlesss and expensive Sphynx breed. Although at first the shaved kittens looked similar to Sphynx, their hair grew back in a few weeks, leaving the owners in shock. It turned out that the hairlessness was not a product of breeding, but of abuse. The cruel scammers pluck out the whiskers and use razor or hair removal creams on baby cats. “I thought he was crying for his mom, but he probably was in pain”, JoAnne Dyck, one of the people who paid $700 for a fake Sphynx, told CBC news.

The baby cat named Vlad was dropped off at Dyck’s Red Deer, Alberta, home. “It looked like a Sphynx because he was very, very skinny and his face was really angular.”

Dyck’s soon noticed that the cat behaved very different and didn’t get along with her other Sphynx cats, so she sold Vlad to some other woman. “Me and her talked back and forth the next couple of days about him, because he wasn’t seeming to really calm down. And she took him into the vet and the vet said the cuts on his skin were most likely caused by razor burn or Nair or something like that,” says Dyck.

It also turned out that the cuts on the tail were so infected, it could have led to an amputation. Fortunately, Vlad is safe and sound now, still living with a woman who purchased him from Dyck.

The scammers only make money because idiots create a market by purchasing over priced merchandise, in this case cats, and the scammers take advantage of it. guess what? If no one was interested in $1000 (or whatever) cat no one would be able to sell it..

Some people are just allergic to cats with hair, it's kinda nice they can enjoy a cats company with this special breed. It's weird you turn this scam around blaming the victims instead of the ones cruel enough to pluck whiskers from kittens.

This is horrible! Animal abuse is nothing new, but this is a new low. I adopted two sphynx cats from a rescue, hoping my allergic sister could tolerate them. Nope! But they're still awesome cats! Great personalities! However, they're more work than furred cats, and often have more expensive medical needs. Don't get one because you think they're cool -- they're an expensive pet.

Interesting that the ears,on these cats look the same shape as the sphinx cats. They seem taller than most breeds of cats. I wonder if they are mixed with the sphinx, just not hairless. Of course, they aren't as valuable, as in dollar wise, but they are priceless to their owners.

cruel to breed away a cats fur. In my eyes those poor creatures don't even count as proper cats and some others already told, that they have health problems. And all that just because people.either find it beautiful (how can they) or hope this is the solution for their cat allergy ( in which case they should just try and live a life without cats. I know this is hard, I am allergic myself, so I know what I am talking about. But it is still a better option than breeding cats to a completely unnatural and unhealthy

Even in third world country like Serbia there are organisations which can vouch for certificated breeders. Anything else that's offered is a scam. So people don't even try to buy expensive pets from unknown sources. They do their research first, talk with vets and get instructions where to look.

Hey dip shits, how about you educate yourselves before making uneducated, idiotic comments, first off, Sphynx cats originated from a NATURAL mutation, understand? NATURAL, I am allergic to cats and have owned 3 and have had no problems, some breeds have less allergic dander than others, simple as that, the breeders that i have known are NOT backyard breeders, they are extremely knowledgeable and spend a enormous amount of time and money to ensure the kittens are as healthy as possible and to keep the breed going to be the best they can be, those of you blabbing on and on about " only purchase mixed breed shelter cats" , all mixed breed cats originated from a pure breed cat, which there are about 43 of, Sphynx are not the only rare and expensive breed of cats out there, just one of the more unusual looking one, Nour Cabaille, you should be embarrassed, there is no way a vet told you that bs and if they did they should have their vet license taken away because its ridiculous lol.

An exotic cat is only for exotic cat enthusiastst the breeding should only ever be done by certified breeders if people stopped trying to buy cheap exotic cats this wouldn't happen, if you have done your research and still want to own an exotic cat you should find a reputable breeder who will give you plenty of information if you meet their standards they may sell u a kitten but you won't be spending 700 dollars it will be thousands, in the U.K. We have tica which is a bit like the kennel club where u can find good quality kittens and cats but your not gonna get a cheap one, however u will get a real one that has been loved and cared for properly

This is why people have to stop "buying" pets. So many are waiting for love in shelters even if you 're looking for a special breed. Pets sellers have to be arrested and buyers have to learn. I have a real Siamese cat in my backyard since last august. He is so scared of humans, cats, dogs birds... I feed him and I built a shelter for him in my garden ( he doesnt want to come in my house so...). Look around you, you'll find a little beautiful creature that can love you as much as one you can buy from any seller.

Besides throwing filth on such people is ridduculous. Caitlyn McCracken - it's none of your business what people spend their money on. you all may say it's the pet dander they're allergic to but that is not always true. when my cats hair is floating around in the air..it's the hair going up or near my nose and eyes that bothers me.

I think there's something seriously wrong with anyone who would buy a hairless cat for a pet, when cats with hair are already weird enough.

How is it cruel to shave a cat but not cruel to intentionally selectively breed harmful genetic mutations into animals and charge top dollar

I find it a little hard to sympathize with people that buy a purebred rather than going down to the pound to rescue a moggie.

Next time, just go to your local animal shelter. Adopt a homeless kitty from there.

My heart absolutely breaks for these poor animals. I hope there's a special place in hell for the people who do things like this. While i've never been interested in so-called "designer" animals, I can't fault the woman who bought the cat.

I hope they catch them. There is nothing wrong with people that purchase these animals. You are attacking the wrong people. Let's put our energy into ending the abuse.

Well I really hope the person who FIRST purchased the cat, turned over the phone number and info of the one who sold him to the authorities.

No cat should be sold for that much money. It seems strangely wrong to me.

It's always the poor animals that end up suffering. Some people are so greedy and cruel

Stop hating the people who buy sphinx. A lot of such owners are allergic to cat fur, but love cats in general and that's the only way they can have one. Besides throwing filth on such people is ridduculous. Caitlyn McCracken - it's none of your business what people spend their money on. The fact someone pulls a scam is in question here - if you were the victim of any scam, you would also whine and shout out. Sheesh, people, be more empathic!

Alusair...cat hair doesn't cause allergies. It's a protein in their salvia. You're illogical and willfully ignorant.

You have to be careful about where you get your pets. Even one of my dogs who I bought from the "breeder" turned out to be from somewhere else.

This awful woman got what she deserved for buying pets as merchandise. Hope she learned a lesson.

Sphynx cats are ugly I won't take them even if someone paid me for that.
