Blackout Curtains That Will Make You Feel Like You’re Living In A Penthouse Above A Large City

Blackout blinds, or curtains, are no longer just a token of edgy teenage bedrooms. They’re back in style, with a modern twist that will have you clamoring to hang them up in your home. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the beauty of blackout blinds and how far they’ve come.

In 1939, Britain enforced a mandatory blackout due to the threat of enemy air strikes. Residents were made to hang thick curtains made of black cotton over their windows at night so that not even a twinkle of light could escape, and even car headlights were to be covered with small shades. Though these were frustrating times, homeowners came to like the privacy and peace blackout curtains provided, and decided to keep them up after the war was over.

The purpose of these dark drapes has now extended far past home safety. Most commercially available blackout curtains are woven extra-tight, and are able to block 99% of light and UV rays. Since they trap sunlight, they also trap heat inside your home, meaning you could save on heating costs during the winter. Stylish new roll-up blackout blinds now come in sleek ‘cut-out’ designs that can turn any window into a glamorous New York or London-inspired city skyline, while still letting minimal light into your home. Check out the best ones on the market below!

I can see the real advantages of having this in my bedroom. Midnight any time you want it to be. Not sure I would want it all over the rest of the windows though. ;D

I think these are for people who work the night shift and need to sleep in the day. Or for those living in Alaska for those long summer days

Really nice! But you can see the buildings only when it's bright outside. At night when I would use them it's dark outside

Hi Pandas! By following the source link under each photo, there should be an option to purchase the curtains or a secondary link to a website where you can (though we cannot guarantee the availability of any design). Happy shopping!

In case of day sunlight it is good. But just thinking how would it be looking on a full moon night. Guess it would be more real and awesome.

I want to buy some of these, but unable to find that option. Already tracked down the material and I'm going to create my own stencil of my favorite skyline or silhouette of a family tree to make my own. Wish me luck! :-)

Living in Arizona we can appreciate blackout curtains to protect us from the heat of the day- this is a big improvement over cardboard!

Why on earth would you prefer to pretend your window view is of a city vs. whatever else is out there? Can we get these made where they turn the city view into the woods again?

Why? If you are in the city these blinds wouldn't be much of a novelty and if you are in the country, you have better things to look at and would hate that cityscape. So why?

Nice, but cant call them blackout blinds as anything but.... also you would have to have them down during the day to benefit from the pattern... couldn't imagine you'd see much at night with no light shining through them?? Would much rather see nature patterns then man made objects.

I don't want to be overwhelmed with city lights at night. I wouldn't sleep, or, sleep well. Not only are these artistic, they block out most of the light, Maybe, someone will work on the city noise next/
