Powerful Video Reveals How Ads Are Filled With Sexism And Objectification Of Women

Objectification of women is a thing that exists even in a sandwich advertisement. That’s what the #WomenNotObjects project is all about. The video pairs some egregious examples of sexist advertising with sarcastic remarks from women exposed to them. From sandwiches to pick-up trucks to clothing – it’s as pervasive as to be everywhere.

The project video encourages discussion by using #WomenNotObjects hashtag. If you want to see more ladies fighting back, here’s a post on female scientists reacting to a sexist remark by a prominent male colleague. And here’s one about a project using hygiene pads to raise rape awareness.

I am all against women objectification (or anyone's objectification for that matter, no one deserves to be treated like a tool), but sadly I'd have to agree that this video was a bit too weak and vague. The "I am your..." was a good point, but would have been more effective if shown in front of those sexualised pictures (or would that be a little extreme maybe...?). My favourite part was the parfume one, "man that smells like a vagina"! Hilarious! In that given context, of course.

I believe that the media projects both men and women in an extremely negative light. Men are projected to want nothing but sex and women are projected to not want sex. However, in the context of this article I think even men would say wtf to these terrible ads lol. I think that they should run an ad campaign with both gendered overly sexualized so that it's equal instead of it just being the women, after all, sex sells.

I have been complaining for years, but nothing happens (aside from me being called a rabid feminazi) I keep pointing out to photospreads (pun intended) where the female models (who are also actors/producers) always have their mouths open, a "pose" that clearly shows her willingness to perform fellatio at any time, in any given scenario.

This is rediculous. Men respond to sexual ques, hence they use sex to sell men's products. Women respond to Lord knows what (it depends if they're on their period or not.) So those ads are tailored to them. Of course women don't want to see all the sexy ads out there used to sell men's products. Just like men don't want to see the ads for tampons or sales where women are coaxed into spending a man's money. Until women are no longer allowed out of the kitchen to view these ads these ads will be there pissing people off. If people don't like it they should put down their screens and read a book.

One of the flagship magazines regarding fashion, sex, culture..., Cosmopolitan was founded by and always run by a woman. That magazine was responsible for a sizeable amount of the female sexualization in our culture and was spoken from women, to women. The fashion culture, in general, is fueled by, run by, watched by, and patronized by women.

Same goes on at Buzzfeed and any other media. WOW the feminazi's on here are really full of hate. YES men are objectified too. And YES women are usually the ones behind the marketing campaigns objectifying other women to begin with. Very few men work at women's cosmetic companies. I was 1 of but only 4 men at a company of 32 women. Get over yourselves.

Yes, but one can say the opposite on the majority of advertising companies, production companies, film crews, fashion photographers, fashion designers, not to mention the car and alcohol company boards and so on. There are very few companies with many women and obviously cosmetics would be one of them, sice there are still many men AND women who think and raise their kids in the "man who's a true man doesn't do that stuff" mind frame. In general these areas I mentioned above are regulated and populated in majority by men. It is gradually changing as the number of women on universities is higher globally, and they are getting more ambitious than ever too, also more independent, which after so many centuries of repression would be expected. If you can't stand women, maybe you should move on to another company. Maybe to Axe's... There must be enough testosterone there to balance out and forget women exist... There is also some gay islands all around the globe.

I think it's a shame that women are just beginning to understand the advertising that has been going on a good 5-6 decades now! I hope this allows some to wake up, and the ones that participate in the ads to realize they are part of the problem. If every woman that participated in the ads asked themselves how they would feel to see their mother, sister, aunt, cousin and most of all daughter doing these ads instead of them. Would the feel sickened? Embarrassed? Objectified? Mortified? Angry? Ready to scream??

Well well, what a surprise to get awful images when you google 'objectification for women'. Really, how can it be?? Mindblowing! Wow! Not that i'm against feminism (i'm a woman myself), but women and men alike are getting sexualized by the media (check any male/female perfume advert for reference, i dare you), but now they are just blaming men for being sexist. Especially with the "I am your ... " part, men have nothing to do with these adverts, it's the big companies, the media, etc that are at fould in this case. No men has ever looked at a commercial and said "damn, that could defenitly use some naked women!". I feel that they are nitpicking and completely missing the point, just to enforce their 'all men are rapist standards. This could've been handled way better.

AnittaSundarampillai

It's not directed against men. It's what the title says: objectification of women. Both men and women are objectified, this particular article is about women. The "I am your..." part of the video is trying to make it personal, so both men and women can imagine their daughter/sister/manager/ceo/mother in that way. In comparison to saying "I am a...woman/sister/daughter/mother", in which it would make it a little less personal. And I don't think it's nitpicking because the ads being shown are explicit. Anyone who is shown these ads can easily point out what the companies are implying. And they aren't enforcing any standards of men being the bad guys or rapists, the names you see are either brands or the founders of companies. But true it could've been better by including the objectification of men, but that's it.

Think you are confusing sexism with a little things called 'You were never the target demographic.' Advertisers don't sell to every one, they target in very specifically, and if you feel alienated get over it.

First of all- all the women in these adverts are models who get PAID for selling their bodies to photographers, who treat them like objects. So these women are OBJECTIFYING themselves to begin with! Second of all, there are quite a few ladies who live their life to get free drinks, expensive gifts, car rides, other "sponsor" c**p, get s**t faced and have one-night stands. These 2 points show that some women behave in a way which gives reason to be objectified. The question is where is the morale in advertising it publicly!

All theses woman have objectified themselves. It almost seems like they are enjoying the job they do. . . C'mon people they're not slaves. Some people like to show themselves off and other "like to look", it's pretty simple. However, the Burger King ad is a bit much, to be honest.

Maybe they should be telling this to the women that accept money to portray women as sexual objects. And there was one "I am your" that they didn't say....lover. Women are more to blame for the objectification of women than men are. Women use sex (or the promise of sex) to get men to do everything in the world for them. All I am asking is that you (women) make up your mind. Either use sex to get what you want and accept that doing so makes you a sexual object that can be had for furs, money power, etc. OR...stop using sex as a weapon or trading tool and demand your respect. You cannot have it both ways.

That is an extreme generalisation to say that women use sex for their benefit as if all women do that. Plus did it ever occur to you that some women rely on using sex to get ahead because that's the only method that might work for them. As in, they can't be taken seriously because of their intelligence or work ethic etc. so they have to rely on sex..

When sex stops selling then advertisers will stop using it as a medium!

Well those women who accepted to be part of this are the ones to blame! :(

women who accept to be part of this, women and men who imagine these ads, woman and man who pay for these ads, woman and man who find these ads appealing... I like to see nice girls of course...But that's won't make me buy a sandwich

Simple solution. Don't buy the products or promote the ads. Congrats on no complying with the latter.

Well, what can we say? God made women to be companions to men, and the women often don't want to do that. They prefer to be admired as objects.

No, we should act like the girls above. How on earth do you expect to get equal rights and payments if most men look at these ads and should I add that the demand brings the supply, so most men who are supposed to buy these products care about your vagina only?
