Dogs have long been involved in warfare, and their use on the battlefield goes back several thousand years. They were used in various capacities by the Ancient Egyptians, the Ancient Greeks, and the Romans, and they're still used to this day as scouts, trackers, sentries, and mine detection dogs. Approximately 5,000 US military dogs served during the Vietnam War, and dogs have been in combat with US soldiers during every major conflict. In homage to these incredibly animals, Bored Panda has compiled this list of our favorite service dogs in action. Don't forget to vote for the best!

And this is why I could never be part of the K-9 team; my instinct is to go first and shield my dog, not the other way around. And of course, their instinct is the opposite, so it could get cartoonishly ridiculous...each trying to get in front of the other.

dogs don't need war, they haven't started this war....they don't deserve to be there
Gini,your right,I wish they didn't have to,war isn't any dogs problem. :(
Load More Replies...Why do animals have to fight wars that stupid humans start. Seems to me that animals are forever paying the price for humanity
I couldn't even make it through the first 10 pictures before I noticed someone near me must have been chopping onions because my eyes were bleeding water!!
they deserve a lot more than a medal:) a dog doesn't know what to do with a gold medal.
True, maybe a lifetime supply of treats would be better. These dogs do so much for us and ask for so little in return
Load More Replies...Love the post cause of the incredible Dog & Human friendship, but also HATE it cause of all the US military photos! GTFO!!!
Not to be super pedantic, but "service dog" specifically refers to dogs trained to assist their disabled handler. The dogs pictured here are working dogs: war dogs, military dogs, guard dogs, rescue dogs, police dogs, detection dogs...They are amazing canine heroes, but these terms do mean specific things and it's worth it to get your phrasing right!
Beautiful man's best friend. Animals sacrificing for humans is not something I like, but if they are saving lives it is a beautiful thing. God created them to work & they aim to please. They are great companions for our soldiers that are defending our freedom. I love all animals & I don't want them to suffer. The love & devotion they have for each other is eternal
Brave, fearless and loyalty personified, each and every adorable one of them.
While I find the bond between the dogs and their owner touching, I think the pictures of military dog – both if their owners are happy and alive, and if they have deceased – illustrate the madness and inhumanity of war. While I am realist enough to understand that the world does not seem ripe enough for times without wars, these pictures are humbling.
So sweet, really reminds us all on how much we depend on the military and their dogs.
So grateful for all soldiers and K9 officers, those with 2 legs and especially those with 4 legs!
