Kara Robinson Chamberlain is a woman who was once kidnapped by a serial killer back when she was 15 years old. Luckily, the woman managed to escape and she’s now sharing her story and valuable safety tips on TikTok and empowering hundreds of thousands of people all around the world.

On June 24, 2002, Kara Robinson Chamberlain was watering plants by herself in her friend’s front yard while the friend was taking a shower. Suddenly, a man she didn’t know pulled into the driveway and asked Kara if he could give her some magazines. Soon after, the strange man put a gun to her neck and forced her into his car.

The stranger forced Kara into a plastic container in the back of his car, restrained her wrists and ankles, and gagged her. After that, the man took the girl to his apartment, held her captive for 18 hours, and sexually assaulted her repeatedly. Later, it turned out that the stranger was actually a serial killer named Richard Evonitz.

Kara had a plan to try her best and gather as much information as possible about the captor and the location he took her to. “I was trying to read his mail, I was looking at the magnets on his refrigerator, I knew who his doctor was, I knew who his dentist was,” she told Elizabeth Smart in a 2018 interview with Crime Watch Daily.

The next morning, when the man was still asleep, the girl managed to escape. She ran out the front door, stopped a random car, and asked the people in it to take her to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Turns out, the abductor Evonitz fled to Sarasota, Florida, where he died by suicide after being surrounded by police. Later, the police found out that Evonitz was responsible for the deaths of three underage girls.

This experience inspired Kara to pursue a career in law enforcement

The summer after her abduction, Kara started working with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Moreover, she did administrative work in victim services and in the DNA lab for the rest of her high school and college years. Later, Chamberlain joined the police academy. After that, she spent a few years working as a school resource officer. Later, Kara went into investigations, taking on sexual assault and child abuse cases.

On her TikTok, Kara talks a lot about trauma, how it affects people, and how to overcome it

On her TikTok, Kara often answers questions asked by her followers. For instance, recently someone had asked her what should a person do if someone held a gun at them and forced them to go somewhere. “Number one, stranger abductions are not that common,” Kara explains in the video. “Number two, when they do happen, most often, if you kick, yell, scream, make a big fuss, try to run, they’re not gonna chase you. Especially if you’re in a heavily populated area. However, sometimes it’s not the case. Sometimes, they will shoot you. Or they would chase you down. So, I can give you my advice, I can tell you that if I would have yelled and kicked and screamed, I probably wouldn’t have been taken. And I knew that. But when you have a weapon up against your head, it’s really hard to do those things ya’ll.”

Moreover, the woman shares tips, including how to escape if you are ever restrained

She really dealt with her situation by taking control - working at the Sheriff's Dept from right after she was kidnapped and then going into law enforcement. Really a role model.

Wow, I recently watched a show about her on the Crime channel. Everything she did to escape was spot on - I am amazed a 15 year old could manage it.

It's sad that the focus is on how innocent people have to protect themselves, rather than raising men who don't hate women, and dealing with the mental illness and/or abnormal psychology that creates a serial killer before they go rogue.

This is a little off topic but it jumped out at me as I began to read this article. So many times women are referred to as "girls," which is maddening but in this case in this article, at 15 years old Kara was a girl but here she's referred to as a woman -- at 15. Could we please agree that anyone under the age of 17 is a girl and, conversely, anyone over the age of 17 is a young woman or a woman. It's demeaning and sexist When a grown woman is referred to as a girl, which happens a lot. I know this is off topic but Kara was not a woman when she was kidnapped. She is most definitely a hero today, but she was a girl. I very much want to see the documentary about Kara Chamberlain. Most people do not escape a serial killer and I'm so glad she did.

If this happened in 2002, why is this article just now being posted 18 years later?

Did they really need to refer to her as "the woman" throughout? What's wrong with using her name?

Please fix your headline: "15 years old" doesn't need to be hyphenated, just as you don't need to hyphenate "6 feet tall" or "going to the store" or any number of other phrases. Hyphenation is only needed when you turn the phrase into an adjective or a noun, for example "The 15-year-old girl" or "The 15-year-old".
