I was sexually abused as a kid, and raped as a teenager. It shaped me in utterly confusing ways, and drove me into deep suicidal depression. After I discovered a deep spiritual calling I became a Hindu nun at the age of 24 and lived a celibate life for many years. Suffice to say simply ignoring your issues doesn't solve them (see sexuality, etc.) so I re-emerged into the world and dove back into intimate relationships. I married, had two kids, divorced, and then finally figured it out.
I realized my story was just that. A story. And I was the author. So I decided to rewrite it.
I awoke to my own sensual and sexual power. I chose profundity and passion over trauma. I broke free and found my ecstasy. Now I share this with others through my art. And I donate 20% of my sales to organizations that work with survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking. And I founded an art gallery where other artists can do the same. Because its not just my story. It's everyone's to share, and for all of us to wake up to something so much more beautiful!

Luscious 37
This piece was created as a variation of a self-portrait. Every year I created a self-portrait on my birthday as a way to record how I looked, however what always appeared on the canvas was how I felt about myself, whether the critique was too skinny, too old, too something. "Luscious 37" was another such attempt but with the intention of creating just how I felt. Body image in society for women focuses on skinny, sexy, photoshopped, perfect. Luscious 37 is voluptuous and unapologetically self-accepting. In the painting I included photographs of my actual body parts, such as my eyes and nipples, to represent this literal representation of my self-image.

I'm so happy that you are now comfortable celebrating the beauty of sexuality, it takes a long time after abuse to stop seeing it as something shameful and to be afraid of. I am still working on this myself. Your work is inspiring and powerful. Thank you

Your choice of colors really reflects the sensual energy you're going for. I really like that you chose different scenes as apposed to the same single figure in every picture, it makes each picture more unique. I hope to see what else you come up with! Do you think you would want to include more male models as well or try to keep it female?

Hi Haley! I will include more male figures, but the content is usually very spontaneous and personal. For this is very focused on the feminine experience. But we will see what the future holds! Thank you!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR ARTWORK!!! It’s inspirational and I love that you give back to the community and the world! You took something that was ugly and you made it beautiful and it made you free! I also like to draw and paint things similar to your paintings but I am always afraid that others will judge me for my art work and because of comfortability and openness of who I am. I have always wanted to get my artwork into a gallery… but I don’t know where to start… Any suggestions on how I can make that happen? Painting is my passion and my love just like people… I just don’t know where to start.

Kyra, Thank you for showing us this part of you both as a part of healing and as an inspiration to others. I have never had to travel this part of your path. I have worked for a rape crisis intervention program and a trainer of local police officers that may have to deal with rape victims. One of your works I had to share with my wife as it reminded me of us. Thank you for that as well.

Um... Picasso was full of anatomical mistakes and he is one of the greatest painters of our time. Realism is not important in art, emotion is. These are full of powerful emotion.
