They might be getting old and grey, they might be slowing down and sleeping more, but our senior pets are still full of love for us. Even the most energetic and playful kittens will eventually turn into wise mini-panthers or venerable floofs. “Senior cats certainly require special accommodations. They need more frequent vet visits to manage chronic illness for one thing. Cats are silent sufferers and mask their illness so routine veterinary care is paramount,” cat behaviorist Ingrid Johnson told Bored Panda. Read on for the rest of Ingrid’s advice on how to take care of elderly cats.
And don’t worry, dog lovers, we haven’t forgotten about you. When you’re done enjoying this list, have a look through our earlier post about adorable senior dogs right here.

My 100 Year Old Grandpa And His 17 Year Old Cat
Walked Into The Shelter And Asked Which Cat Had Been There The Longest... Came Home With A Deaf, Toothless Senior Lovebug. Reddit, Meet Cali!
We Adopted An 11-Year Old Cat From A Chicago Shelter. He And My 13-Yo Daughter Fell In Love. This Is Them After She Got Back From A Week At Camp
That's precious. My kitty looks like that too. We adopted him at a similar age but he acts like a younger cat and has so much love and cuddles to give. He's incredibly affectionate, doesn't scratch and is gentle and mellow. He's in great shape too, its been 5 years since we got him and he's happy and healthy. Definitely worth adopting older for us.
Cat behaviorist Ingrid explained that older cats need easy access to food, water, and their litter; they also need soft, warm bedding.
“This means ensuring that you have resources placed in all of the areas where your senior citizen spends time. The last thing you want to do is have a litter box in the basement of a three-story home knowing your cat spends most of their time on the top floor in the bedroom,” the expert said, pointing out that not keeping litter boxes close by might lead to some icky ‘surprises’ on the carpet.
“Would you want to walk down two flights of stairs to go to the bathroom when you are 90? No! You would not!” Ingrid pointed out that we should set our senior cats up for success, instead of making life difficult for them.

Senior cats need to use ‘the facilities’ more often and have larger volumes of waste to get rid of, so it might be a good idea to have multiple litter boxes for them to use. You should also strive to keep the boxes immaculately clean: this way, they’ll avoid stepping in urine clumps while navigating the box.
“It can be challenging for senior cats to navigate cat litter if they are arthritic. How many 85-year-old humans walk the beach for fun? Walking on sand is tough! Many cats start developing signs of arthritis between the ages of 10-12 years, so preventative joint care is key and this helps keep them being able to use their litter box!” cat behaviorist Ingrid said.

According to Ingrid, there are lots of ways to help out your senior cats. For example, arthritis is often under-diagnosed and under-treated in cats, so scratch ramps are a way to help cats keep limber.
Meanwhile, environmental enrichment and optimizing a healthy mind can lessen cognitive dysfunction and senility in older cats. What’s more, foraging toys and food puzzles can be a good way to keep your cat’s brain healthy.
“Foraging for food keeps cats fit and engaged, it is close to letting a mouse loose in the house as you can get!” the cat behaviorist said. You can find more info about challenging your cat with food puzzles right here.
“Last but not least, offer warmth! A heated bed, easy access to sunny spots, etc. Seniors often have kidney disease. The kidneys help regulate body temperature, so these seniors tend to be cold. Offer warmth!” Ingrid stressed.
My Grandpa Passed Away On Thanksgiving And No One Would Take His 18 Year Old Cat... So We Did. Welcome Home, Lovey!
I'm sorry for your loss. We adopted our 'senior' (he was 11 at the time) cat because our friend died, and the rest of his family didn't want the cat either. So we took him. And it was the best decision ever; kitty has enriched our lives in so many ways. It also took an edge off the grief for us, we comforted him and he comforted us. Good on you for taking Lovey.
When Your Cat Is Pushing 20 Years Old, But Can Still Pull Off That Innocent Baby Look
Tiger Is 31 Years Old, And Is Still A Prime Example Of The Ever Loving Box And Cat Relationship
I saw this cat on Reddit, the owner said their vet told them they had the oldest cat in Illinois. Sadly, it died not too long ago.
Vet visits become more and more frequent when your cat gets older because new illnesses or hereditary issues will be popping up as the animal’s body wears down. However, even if your catto seems fine, it’s still important to go for regular check-ups at the vet around every 6 months. Better safe than sorry!
According to Cat Friendly, cats can be very subtle and sneaky when it comes to hiding their illnesses. So you have to keep a keen eye out for any unusual changes in their behavior, appetite, and mood.
Even if you think they might be small enough to ignore or not bother your vet with. The biggest indication that something’s wrong is when your cat’s weight changes drastically. The same applies to practically any pet and human being, too.

An Elderly Cat Who Can No Longer Bird Watch Receives A Fish Tank Full Of Fake Fish To Watch From The Comfort Of His Bed
Meanwhile, Cats Protection explains that elderly cats need extra care and attention from their owners to ensure that they spend their twilight years comfortably. So older cats really do need more warmth and extra soft bedding.
What’s more, they might have difficulty getting to high places in their senior years, so consider providing stools, ramps, or ladders leading up to their favorite napping spots. Or you can keep picking your cat up and placing it where it wants to go. We’re sure your cat won’t mind that.
Older cats can also have difficulty looking after their coats. So to keep them gleaming and neat, spend some more time grooming them. It’s a win-win situation: your cat’s coat will look nicer, you’ll spend more quality time together bonding, and you’ll reduce your stress levels while you’re stroking your cat. No matter their age, cats deserve care from their owners to keep the happy days coming.

I don't keep track of birthdays. I typically forget mine (literally). But every year, I ask my cats if they'll please live another 10 years. This post, gives me hope that they may agree to my request. <3 :)
I love to see people taking care of older cats. We need to take care of all senior citizens.
Actually, I'm hoping that when the time comes, someone will give me happy sleepy juice, draw me a lively lavenadar bubble bath, and put me down easy.

Cats are angels on earth. Soft, sweet little faces with gorgeous eyes, beautiful loving little souls who give their love so generously. Their sense of humour and ability to forgive minor insults are endearing and keep us bonded to them in regard to their everlasting patience with us hoomans. Cats are the most endearing enchanting and wonderful creation on earth.
My cat died today. My brother had backed over him and Calcifur ran off, we couldn't find him for two days, he had run underneath the house and was hiding in the insulation. Every time we tried to get him out he'd move, eventually he was coaxed out and we brought him to the vet. No broken bones but he has blood/fluid that needed to be drained, they put him on oxygen because he was having trouble breathing. They were going to keep over the weekend to monitor him, but he died today. The worst part is that he died alone in a place he didn't know, it just kills me. Everybody hug your pets and make sure they know they are loved.
Lisa, I'm so sorry for your loss. Cats are loving and caring companions till the end. But he'll live in your heart forever. I lost my 15 yo favorite cat 5 months ago. she always cared for me keeping constant company and purring near me all her life, and when I was hill for months she didn't left me for a minute. she always behaved like as a happy kitty. then suddenly she got sick (cancer) and died on my lap embracing me 18 days after. I'm still heartbroken crying, I couldn't overcome her loss yet. But I lost other sweet cats years ago, one with 20 yo, they all died next to me while I pet them, and their hearts are still with me, blessed their loving spirits.
Load More Replies...I couldn't wait to get my own place so I could get a cat. Unfortunately, my husband is allergic 😢
I am too. I just take a lot of pills (rotating between OTC indoor allergy meds as I build up a tolerance to one) and vacuum/sweep up fur 2-3 times a week. I also just accept the fact that my eyes are often itchy and my nose is often stuffy. Having a cat around is worth it, IMO.

Many years ago a pregnant stray showed up on my doorstep. I took her in, and a few days later the blessed event occured in my bathroom. I did find good forever homes for all the little ones and had mama fixed. Ragamuffin was my constant companion for 17 years. I knew she was getting old when she could no longer jump onto my bed but had to clamber up - sometimes I had to help her. In her last year she was blind, but at least she could find the litter box! She passed peacefully in her sleep. I still miss her.
My snek is 22, nearly 23. He has cataracts, but can still eat! I've had him longer than I've known my husband, and he is awesome.
We have 5 cats, all older than 9 years old. So seeing this post is just wonderful. The older strays just wander in, and they need our love and aid. Thank you so much to all of you everyone who adopts these older fur babies. Little by little we are making things better.
It was 4 years ago I lost the "kitten" I had raised since he was born in 1999. He had been running around like a kitten and then 20 minutes later he was stumbling around, drooling and yowling in fear... rushed him to the vet... Unfortunately I had to say good-bye. I had him 17 years
Our pets are so special, as they age, we wish they, could live much longer, when I lost my dogs, I couldn't stop crying, now I have my two awesome, cats, I love them so much, I know it will be unbearable when they go, they are my world !!!
i made a vow that dogs will be my fave ever since my twin dog died but cat will always have a place in my heart
Our oldest kitty is 15 this year and she remembers very little. On the other hand our 10 year old boy hops outside to wait for extra cuddles. He may not enjoy hugs from young visitors anymore due to his old bones, but he loves the pets!
