Samsung’s ‘Safety Truck’ Shows The Road Ahead On Screen So Drivers Can Pass It

Semi-trailers are dangerous and stressful obstacles when drivers try to pass them, so Samsung has come up with a great way to make things a little bit easier for other drivers; they’ve attached giant TVs to the back so that drivers can see the road ahead before trying to pass.

According to Samsung’s video, almost one person dies in a traffic accident every hour in Argentina, so the need for something like their ‘Safety Truck’ is definitely there. The system is simple, though perhaps a bit cost-prohibitive – a small camera on the front broadcasts a live feed of the road to the screens on the back. There’s even a night-vision mode for night-time driving.

The truck’s prototype has already been tested, though no models are currently on the road. Samsung claims to be working together with local governments to figure out how to optimize the system for live road use. “So far Samsung has been able to confirm that the technology works and that this idea can definitely save the lives of many people,” they write.

I'd like to see this on every truck for safety reason I know I have difficulty trying to see ahead of a truck

That's a white line. Why are cars going the opposite direction?

Because not every county uses a yellow line as the middle. Most if not all European countries use a white line in the middle.

Living in Montana, where there are a LOT of two-lane roads and heavy truck/semi traffic (along with vacationers in their fifth-wheels/motor homes). This could save many, many lives around these parts.

I don't know, I think you could think the back of the truck is a huge tv set, might make one sleepy.

Seems like a good way to get drunks to crash into the back of your truck.

It's a good idea if they can add a prediction algorithms that let me know if I should overtake or not (with an average speed).

This would be awesome! I hate getting stuck behind a rig because I can't see what is going on in front.

An other idea cars should have is a digital speedometer above the licence plate. I even wrote to Ford Motor to suggest it but have had no reply.

I don't really see the advantage. When one is waiting behind a truck, one doesn't need to know what's in front of it but rather if there's oncoming traffic on the opposite direction. This can be easily achieved by moving slightly the car to the left and taking a peek. I agree with some other comments in this thread, this seems to be just a marketing stunt to sell more panels.

If this is the English version, why is he on the wrong side of the road. Think this lorry is out of control!!

maybe they are seeing how well this will do on this test truck and then they'll put in on others. Just a theory.

What a great idea. I remember in Texas there are very long straight roads with only one lane in each direction and trying to pass a truck is almost impossible and certainly VERY DANGEROUS

Almost one person an hour dies in a traffic accident in Argentina . Almost one person. 80% of the people who nearly die in traffic accidents do it on roads. The other 20% presumably nearly die offroad. I just hope that all these nearly dead people make full recoveries. If nobody actually completely dies, does this mean rgentina has the safest roads in the world??

correction: in Argentina ONE person DIES in a traffic accident every hour. 80% happen ON roads, mainly from overtaking, The author of this article attempted to incorporate their own words and used 'almost' but in actual fact the video never states Almost.

I LOVE this. We all know how difficult it is to pass semis safely!! Amazing idea! This should be a lifesaver for sure. Kudos to all trucking companies all over the world if you can afford to use this system. I know many small companies will not be able to do so. However, any who can, should! Nice to see modern technology being used for the good of humankind instead of the destruction for a change!!

I think all long haulage trucks should have this device. When you drive a small car it is difficult to see whether it is safe to overtake the truck or not. There are way too many accidents involving safety distance and trucks.

Driving on roads like that is dangerous in and of itself, let alone being tasked with passing large semis! I think this is a great idea that has great potential. I wish I had thought this up!
