How Women Do Their Own Makeup Vs. How A Professional Does It (29 Pics)
Interview With ArtistA dab of mascara, a hint of blush, and you’re ready to roll with that homemade makeup look. Most often, it’s stunning as it is, but in the world of makeup, god is in the details. And one Russian make-up artist Julia Ismailova is showing what a day and night difference a little subtlety can make.
From adding a touch of bronzer on the cheeks for a sun-kissed look to simply smudging bold eyeliner to make eyes look bigger, Julia’s transformations are all about little details that go a long way. In a series of Instagram posts, she has put side-by-side pictures of makeup done by her and the girls themselves, and the result is truly surprising. Check out the looks down below and let us know which ones you like better!

I was never really into the heavy cat eye look unless you have that hipster style with tattoos and short bangs.
One on the right ,more natural, why cover up a pretty face.
Load More Replies...Are you guys sure you have the before and after pictures in the right order??
Yes, the lighter eyeliner just tones down the whole look.
Load More Replies...What gets me about this one is how the pro makeup actually changes the shape of her face. In the first shot, her face seems a bit too long and too wide, especially around the eyes, but in the second shot, her features appear more condensed, eyes closer together and her face seems shorter from lips to eyebrows. What a difference!
Or, as I suspect, some of these are photo-shopped more than make up. Jawlines don't change from make up alone, even with super heavy contouring.
Load More Replies...Omg, did you know that blue eyes and natural red hair is literally the rarest combination in humans?
I'm all for the comparisons but be realistic with them. If they wanted a TRUE comparison on make up that's all they should have changed. Giving her an updated partially curled hairstyle contributes to the whole looking better and takes away from the eye going to what we're supposed to be focusing on. It's misleading.
The hairdo is different. You can't compare in a right way. Don't see much difference in the make up so.
On the left she looks like she's going to dinner on the right going for lunch....I can honestly say she looks good in both
Her nose looks smaller with professional help. Maybe this makeup artist could work on me too?
Bored Panda reached out to Julia Ismailova, Moscow-based professional makeup artist and the founder of the beauty studio Makeup Cultura.
She told us that the idea of recreating women’s makeup came naturally after she realized that most of her clients who came to Julia’s individualized makeup classes would wear heavy makeup. “It didn’t complement these girls at all,” she said.
Julia then took a picture of her client before the lesson while she was wearing her go-to homemade makeup and compared it with the "after" look that was done under Julia’s guidance. After posting the picture on Instagram, “I received outstanding feedback from my audience—they loved it!”
This has to be a woman thing...but as a dude i see very lil difference...to me the left is just as attractive as the right
Against popular belief, most women do makeup for themselves, not men.
Load More Replies...She needs a little makeup in the 'before photo" but she looks 'far too ORANGE' in the after photo. Her lip color is better in the 'before'
The one on the left is so much more natural. She looks a lot more happy.
She has no makeup in the first. I thought this was supposed to be comparing two different makeup styles not makeup versus no makeup
I think she looks older in the second picture to be honest
Load More Replies...Why is her hair such a problem? Are you unable to see her face because she changed hair? Its probably a full makeover thats why they changed it
She looks absolutely LOVELY in the after photo. She doesn't even look like the same human being. How did you get her face to look so short and wide ??!!
It's all in the shade of makeup used. It gives you the illusion that her face has a different shape.
Load More Replies...I agree. The left look is dramatic diva, whereas she looks approachable on the right.
Load More Replies...The makeup artist said that usually, “Women see the tiniest flaws on their faces, but do not realize how beautiful and unique they truly are.”
That’s why so many of them use makeup to hide and cover up their flaws, but “this is so wrong,” Julia said. But makeup is an opportunity to "let yourself shine and show the world what’s unique about your appearance.”
Julia never does the transformations according to her personal tastes. “The result of all my clients’ transformations is our joint effort and creativity,” and she calls it “a co-creation.” As a result, she never tries to break habits, but rather “corrects them.”
She looks like she's on a bender or recovering from illness with all that nasty red around her eyes
Load More Replies...I don't think red eyeshadow is for anybody. At first I thought she was in an accident in a laboratory
We get that, however her own style needs help. She can keep her style and stay away from the basic wyt girl look that the pro gave her. The red however, that makes her eyes look infected. The shimmer she added in the corners is too much too.
Load More Replies...Her makeup on the left I can tell is really asian inspired. I love what they did with the eyebrows on the right, I feel like they’ve just turned her into any other basic girl with the makeup instead of really expressing her style.
Thank you! These women are so mean! Blows my mind!
Load More Replies...The first look is actually a style. So maybe don’t be so harsh and brush up On your trends before you call someone a “meth user”....lots of recovering people out there and that comment is just flat out nasty. Women please be nicer to other woman, my god.
I like them both, there is not much difference and her own makeup reflects her quirky personality
the camera angles are not the same. The left is straight on, the right is looking downward.
You're right. I didn't notice that at first. You can tell by the nose.
Load More Replies...A perfect change, subtle soft look, good example of a little does the trick, lovely eyes !!!
imho the after is the perfect amount of makeup used..yet she don't need it, likely look the same without it on a good healthy day, looks like winter here and we all look a little worn then. In summer well as a man I would love to see her walking down the beach after a swim..no make up needed...tho she can do what she wants lets all be clear about that....our opinions do not matter.
Her whole face is 'smoothed'. Looks like a touch of photoshopping and not just make up. Look at the lines on her neck - they are less obvious as well. Her top is blurry. No, this one isn't just the make up and I think it's cheating personally.
Load More Replies...This girl has a LOT of NATURAL BEAUTY. She looks better in the before photo. Please don't hide her beautiful freckles. They give her character and charm and beauty.
Ok. What is the trick with the noses looking smaller? I can't figure it out!!!
Chances are, there are a few more face creams and lipsticks right there in your bathroom cabinet than there used to be, like two years ago. But it’s not just you. In fact, the beauty industry has been among the fastest-growing in the past 5 years and it’s nowhere near ready to stop.
As of 2019, the global beauty industry was valued for $532 billion with the US being the world’s largest beauty market. Meanwhile, the cosmetic products market keeps growing in an upright direction. Zion Market Research has shown that it will reach a whopping $863 billion in 2024.
Forbes reports that the beauty consumer, aka you and me, is also changing alongside the booming market. We now “define beauty” and demand an “inclusive and authentic image” to which we can relate. In the past, beauty adverts used to communicate aspirational ideas and unattainable standards, but these days, more than ever, brands celebrate real and natural beauty.
And the eyebrows on the right are much better, not this blocked Instagram tutorial s**t.
Right? I know more than one girl who has plucked all eyebrow hairs out and replaces them with an eyebrow stencil that's hella wide, and then just runs mascara across the stencil because it "lasts longer." No....don't do that. Please??
Load More Replies...She looks much better now that she is wearing the right color foundation.
The eyebrows on the left makes me think of the TV cartoon "The Jetsons", when one of the women puts a stencil over her face and sprays the futuristic makeup on.
nah- her own version is nicer. And the lighting makes a huge difference
Foundation on the right matches her undertones, left looks too yellow and clashes.
I like the before pic better, the makeup pic makes her look like a real doll.
She looks beautiful on the left. I would prefer a more casual look.
Girl on the right looks like she had a couple of rough nights! I'm all for the girl on the left here...
The hairstyle on the right suits her better than the one on the left. It's not just makeup.
Load More Replies...I'm not a fan of the right photo. That black smokeybeyeliner under her eyes actually enhances her bags under her eyes... sucks cause shes a gorgeous girl. It's just the makeup isnt done well
I don't like either, she should ditch the black eyeliner, it makes her look older than she is.
Left looks so much softer and nicer. The right looks fake and weird.
Why did they kill her natural lips...wtf. Again I ask, who is this professional who can't do makeup.
No way!!! She completely changed her vibe!! She was rocking the dark lipstick cat eye look and she made her face look so plain which completely throws off her look and takes away from it!! I live for punk style how dare you dampen it down like that!!
Totally agree that this takes away a certain amount of punctuation that she obviously was feeling in the first pic. I'm an "old" punk myself, and I remember when I was her age my mom had me do a makeover for a family event. I went home feeling like a diluted stranger, and even though I was highly complimented, I remember doubling down on my black eyeliner and hair color from then on. Haven't looked back since, still rocking my look, my way, (of course modulated for the added decades). Been featured in a couple 80's punk then and now articles too! Follow your own path! Do, be, do, be, do!
Load More Replies...In this case, the strong eyeliner worked! The fresh look make-up looks silly with her blue hair.
that woman is beautiful with or without makeup. She does not need paint or coloring to bring out a distinct beauty.
BEFORE is much better. She looks nice and natural. This makeup artist wants to take away lovely characteristics.
I mean, she is red now. I guess if that is what she wanted. Was perfectly fine before. Looks great, now she looks great red.
She looks like she needs a vacation! The one on the left looks like she partied all night and never removed her makeup the next day. Neither one is very good. But the right looks more natural. I prefer it that way.
Fine before yet love the hair after. Larger hair suit her facial structure imo. stressing this again my opinion they are amazing no matter what they choose to do with their bodies.
Before is better. Don't obliterate her personality. Don't cover up her beautiful skin. Don't make her blush and lips TOO PINK !!
I think she looks happier, she's even smiling a bit on the right.
Load More Replies...She looks… washed out in the first one. Second one too, tbh, but not so bad
And opened her jacket to light up her face. Pretty
Load More Replies...Without the heavy eyeliner, her eyes are allowed to shine with expression.
For all the people who want her to smile. She is smiling! That is the problem with us thin lips and narrow mouthers... we always look angry or discontent and we need to smile twice as broad than people who have big mouths who always seem to smile. We can't help it! Stop making us insecure!
they don't want to focus on mouth because skin condition, see...
Load More Replies...I really don't think it's photoshopped. The facial discoloration could be melasma, a skin condition of the face and causes patchy, brown, tan or blue-gray spots on the face
Load More Replies...Those look like under eye circles to me more than make up.
Load More Replies...This is the first one they've shown that the girl looks almost the same in both photos. The Rt they softened the eyebrow color and put some shine on the lips. The Rt looks much better!
The hair part is good, except for the eyes, the before is good, a little too much makeup on second photo, pretty girl !!!
BEFORE is better. Just take away the green eye-shadow and she's all set. AFTER PHOTO - you made her TOO PINK !!! You've got an obsession with PINK FACES !!
Not sure if it's just me, but the exclamation points and CAPS are really put-offing on your messages. It feels like you're berating her, or something. I doubt she's reading the comments all that carefully.
Load More Replies...Pretty girl needs nothing, too much color on after, I suggest taupe eye shadow, must be taupe with a grey base, not pink, it is soft !!!
When you get a professional make-up session, they normally drape a cloth over the front of your clothing, in case any rogue make-up bits try to make their way to your blouse, similar to the drape a salon would use. When they took it off, she more then likely adjusted her clothing. I dont think it was done intentionally.
Load More Replies...I'm not a fan of the feathered eyebrow look But that's just me. Shes a beautiful girl though
AFTER PHOTO - too PINK !!! This makeup artist makes almost everyone look TOO PINK !! She needed a little concealer for the lines under her eyes and she needed a lighter lipstick. Otherwise she looks great in the BEFORE PHOTO.
In the after pic her skin is much softer looking. The first pic it looked very oily.
Wow! Who is this person? How can I find her? Im her younger doppelganger 😲
You can ask to the makeup artist https://www.instagram.com/by_julia_ismailova/
Load More Replies...After looking at 29 photos, this is the first one that the woman looks better in the left photo than the right.
Agree...first pic is better. makeover has black under eyes.....like the mascara got smudged.
Both are great, the after, added some eye defining, pretty girl !!!
Yeah, the eye makeup makes her eyes pop and they really made her skin glow. But she is so beautiful before and after! 🥰
Load More Replies...Something is off, not quite sure what, perhaps contouring gone wrong !!!
Not sure what's with all the negative comments. She clearly has a preferred style and colour palette so the makeup artist has worked with her to apply it in a way that better compliments her face shape. The eyeshadow for example, it's lifting her eyes and makes them appear bigger despite having hooded lids. The lips I'd assume are a statement piece but they too are done in a way that makes them appear plumper.
I find it fascinating how as a society we are taught to accept certain esthetics and not others. Why are certain colors acceptable on the face and others not?
My thoughts exactly. From the moment we see a less common colour everyone s like wtf. I think She owns it.
Load More Replies...I love the eyeshadow on the right . She can def get away with that. Its arty and not for everyone.
It's simple things that totally surprise you sometimes that spark your look up. She looks great
I like the eyes in the right one. Nose and mouth look a little to shiny to me.
There's a way to do hooded eyeshadow to brighten her eyes, I wish she had tried it. She's still pretty
Load More Replies...I completely agree. All that looks improved on version 2 is a bit of blush.
Load More Replies...Agree, purple under the eyes makes her look like she's dying
Load More Replies...The only thing better about the After photo is her hair. I prefer the before shot.
She looks like an adult and this is a problem for you?
Load More Replies...she would look so much better with a pixie cut to frame her features and soften the high forehead.
I have a friend I suggested that to. She did it over ten years ago, still loves it.
Load More Replies...I like how the artist didn’t choose only models, so most of these women look like actual people, which is unusual for these kind of posts. I also like how the artist chose not to change their looks drastically, and mostly kept their styles.
The artist only did things that they can do easily themselves at home. That's the only kind of makeover most people want. A lot of people use the wrong colors, too. All she did was set them straight.
Load More Replies...I am so pleased to see that the most of the make up was more on the natural side rather than the bright or dark eye shadows, ridiculous amounts of contouring, fake eyelashes etc. The make up was done nicely and gave most of these women a fresher look.
Kind of depends for me. I normally go with natural looks, but every now and then I just want to do kind of creepy, dramatic looks. Like going for a gothic look or a dead girl kind of look. Sometimes it isn't about making myself look pretty as much as it about me wanting to look drastically different. Weird makeup was the reason why I got into makeup in the first place, but I do agree people look better when the makeup looks more natural.
Load More Replies...it's great that make up artist chose very subtle make up, unlike those cartoonish make up that looks kinda acceptable only in photos. It's very subtle make up which only just brings up good features in these women. Tutorial, please!
didn't read any text and could tell in an instant these women are Russian
The lighting changes dramatically between photos, it makes quite a difference
It really does! My two bathrooms have different bulbs—one a white fluorescent and the other a yellow incandescent bulb. I’ve taken pictures of myself in both bathrooms with the same makeup and I look completely different in both. The fluorescent shows EVERY line & spot on my face... think mugshot. The other bulb has more natural type light and doesn’t make me look washed out or haggard.
Load More Replies...There's hardly any difference for me in most of them. In some, the women have chosen not to wear any makeup and then have had some put on, so obviously that's different. There's only a couple where I would say the woman looks "better" afterwards. People should look however makes them happy, regardless of what we think.
Why does everyone of these women have such thick eyebrows? Were they chosen for that feature?
