In recent days, the internet has been actively discussing women’s safety when they’re walking home alone in a shady neighborhood. Bored Panda has already covered some of the stories arising from these discussions, like 6 tips for men to help women feel safer in public, this hand signal indicating you’re in danger, and this viral response to Sarah Everard’s murder.

Well, this TikToker joined the conversation by sharing how to properly pull off the key self-defense technique in light of the many people who were sharing how they rely on it.

More Info: TikTok Pt. 1 | TikTok Pt. 2

No doubt you have heard of a self defense technique whereby you hold keys in your fist between the fingers

TikTok user and make-up artist Fae (@faesfx), with whom Bored Panda got in touch, has recently shared a video about the right way of defending yourself with a set of keys in your hand.

For those wondering, this technique involves a person holding a key (or a set of keys) in their hands to be used as a weapon against a potential attacker who might sneak up from behind.

Now, some people were told to hold the keys between their fingers, extending outward, similarly to how Wolverine from the X-Men has his claws facing outward.

Well, this TikToker explains that, though a prevalent method, it might end up hurting you

However, Fae explained that this way is only kinda effective, if at all, depending on the situation. If it is effective, it’s only so for one punch, as the keys will likely end up bending backward in your hands and possibly hurting you.

Also, there’s a chance that the attacker will sneak up from behind, making it impossible to land a hit with the keys at all, as seen in the TikTok video.

You see, when you punch the attacker, the keys might bend upward and hurt your hand

However, she suggested switching up the way you hold the keys. Instead of doing the Wolverine, she says it’s better to take your longest key and clench it in your fist—like you would normally hold a stick. Fae called this the “hammer” method. This way, you will then be able to ensure the key’s stability, all the while also retaining reachability.

The TikToker also exemplifies how holding the key in this position works—if someone was to sneak up from behind, the victim would be able to extend their arms to stab them in the leg, or if they’re lucky, in the more sensitive areas of the attacker.

Instead, she suggests using what she calls the ‘hammer’ method

Fae cannot recall where she learned this tactic, or how she ended up relearning it—“I don’t know where that came from or who first told me but from what I gather it is the norm for people to be told this.” However, it was only natural for her to speak about the right way when she saw some people doing it wrongly.

Since then, the video went viral on TikTok, garnering over 2.2 million views with over 530,000 likes and 17,000 shares. Many people found this bit of advice very useful, though also pointing out they wished it was never even a necessity in the first place.

If you simply clench up a key in your hand as shown below, it won’t wobble and be more effective

Others also one-upped the self-defense hack by suggesting using a different key than the one they would need to enter their car or home, like an old unused key. You know, because you’re gonna need it and if it gets somehow stuck in the attacker and he flees, well… you know the rest.

As you might have figured, both Fae and her friend Charly were surprised the video took off: “We’re definitely surprised, a little bit annoyed with myself for not checking if I used the same hold on her, but I thought it would be seen by 100 people max. So, even though the information is there. The demonstration on the first video is unfortunately terrible. My lovely model Charly is feeling the same way, happy for all the positive comments, but regretting we didn’t carry out the demonstration properly.”

Fae also shows this in action with the help of her friend Charly

The now-viral TikToker also posted a follow-up video, thanking viewers and also encouraging people to not use things like knives or chemicals, especially in countries that forbid their use. And we can’t stress this enough because the point of this tactic is to increase your chances of fleeing, not to seriously hurt the attacker:

“The thing to remember is you aren’t settling in to fight your attacker, you are doing what you can to get away, the second you are free to run, you run.” If you continue, the attacker might overwhelm you in the end, or there might be legal repercussions for the victim as well.

Keep in mind that this tactic shouldn’t be used with knives or similar weapons—the point is to give yourself a chance to escape, not seriously hurt the attacker

In the second video, Fae elaborated on the key technique by showing another possible hold that an attacker might assume and how the same trick might help. You can see her actually getting a tad bit hurt when her friend overshoots the pretend stab.

She also pointed out that if this was real life, the victim would quite likely be kicking and screaming, kicking the head back in hopes of seriously hurting the attacker.

If you’re lucky, you might end up hitting not just the leg, but also some more delicate parts

“In the UK, we have an issue with knife crime and it is illegal to carry,” explained Fae. “Unfortunately, there are strict laws over here with regards to self defence tools, there are very few things that can be used without being classed as an offensive weapon (Prevention of Crime Act 1953 details what is classed as an offensive weapon) so if you don’t have a longer key you can use the smaller house key in the similar position, it might not be as effective but in the moment it is all about doing what you can to get away from your attacker, not to seriously harm them.”

I'd like to know why it's illegal in the UK to carry pepper spray. This would be a really good means of self-defence. I can't help thinking this law was made by men.

You want to feel confident dealing with strangers? take krav maga which is apparently the easiest to learn. I did Taijutsu which comes from Ninjutsu, its all about letting someone come at you and than you put them on the ground efficiently and gravity and their own weight is used against them. Im 6'0 tall and had a sparing partner who was a 18 year old 5'5 girl, she still had the upper hand when jabbing her fingers into my throat since I have an adams apple an she doesnt. I was doing a downward thrust and didnt phase her. (you strike at around 60% so you know what it feels like to be hit) You dont need keys, just your fingers or open hand striking them in the neck or eyes

There are people in these comments that seem to think only woman can be attacked, and obviously most of us know that isn't true. And yes men are more likely to be murdered yes...NOONE is completely safe. However, men have the advantage of standing a better chance against an attacker, and that is the difference.

Um, I don't think this post is helpful. For example, in the "She is holding keys first way. If I grab her she has nowhere to go" set of pictures, the idea and the instinct would be to throw the punch over the shoulder and hit the attacker in the face. This looks like those awful informercials where to demonstrate one thing to sell another, the model doesn't seem to have the wherewithal to unwarp a stick of gum.

Why not educate boys and men NOT to attack women when they are going about their business? Why doesn't men take their responsability as a brother, a husband, a father or a son and stop the attacks? Verbal or physical attacks o women are everywhere, but men usually are such cowards and never go against the attacker and tell them they're wrong. Why is that? Is it that men in general get uncomfortable, or are they really that weak and cowardly? Keep women safe - speak up against the violence!

@Lucas and @Dilly who've replied below sound like loyal Tory followers. A bill following a course like this is very likely to become law. There's a large majority of Tories in the commons, Tory Lords are constantly being created, so it's just a matter of time. As for the sentencing on rape vs demonstrating, has anyone looked a the conviction and sentencing rates for rape and sexual assault? They're scandalously low.

I agree that the way most women hold the key (first way) is not right, but in the "attack" part of the video, in the forst attempt she holds the girl's arm , and in the second one she's letting the arm free to move.

I've been involved in self defense and martial arts for 40 years now. I used to train with the assistant of the guy who invented Model Mugging, a women's self defense program. I've seen a lot of things. This article will kill people. You need to take it down. None of this key stuff works in real life. Women are strong, tough and fast, they just need training. Magic keys to poke an angry guy will get you in much worse trouble than you even started. For god's sake, stop looking for magic and get some basic, quality self defense training.

I mean i would totally hold the key in the hammerfists thats good stuff, but the back control defense is worthless really. first of all you hitting for pain only with that one - theese are not 100% solutions, they can work for sure but they rather wont. there is no way somebody can create enough force in that backward motion while bringing your hips in front. while the hips idea cool to create space, it also can outbalance you and the least thing you want is to land on the ground. that being said it may be the only solution if there is no training. but you gotta be careful giving theese advice out, people might think they are 100% working.

You wont get grabbed from behind with your arms free, youll have your arms pinned at your sides, need to know how to shoot your arms down and lowering your self suddenly and throwing your elbows back. If they go for a choke hold you need to be aware of your situation and tuck your chin into your chest.

Aww look at this Safe Space Millenial trying to show fighting techniques. If you use your keys you make your hand look like Wolverine and a key between each finger and also grip better, Oooorrr you just go buy a Kubaton key chain for 10 bucks in any country and its hard steel 5 inches long with finger grips and a pointy end. one key is going to piss off a s**t head and since 90% of young women have no fighting skill, theyre more f****d. Dont carry a knife because by the time you fish it out of your purse youll just get it used on you.

I learned to hold your keyring in your fist with keys sticking out between my fingers.

Nice! That's how I hold my keys when I feel the need to in certain situations

Not if your self-defense teacher, like mine, shows you which big key to buy at the local hardware store and how to hone it to a point! :-) Mine stabs fine. It punctures a cantaloupe rind.

This is good information, because it appears that the wolverine keys in knuckles technique is not effective AND seems to be widely taught.... While this is more useful, it is like the 6th, WOMEN BE AFRAID article

Why are they holding keys? Is this an American thing? In our country (of course outside some parts of large cities) the women won't have to be afraid to walk alone.

At harbor freight they have this knife hidden in a key. It looks like two keys together and a knife that flips out. It goes on your keychain like a normal key. Less than $2.

No no no. trying to stab someone with a 1 inch key in the junk isnt going to do anything. maybe if hes naked, and the leg doesnt matter either.

You wont get grabbed from behind with your arms free, youll have your arms pinned at your sides, need to know how to shoot your arms down and lowering your self suddenly and throwing your elbows back. If they go for a choke hold you need to be aware of your situation and tuck your chin into your chest.

Cute, what is a potential 110kg mugger going to do after being tickled by a set of keys swung by a 60kg girl?

Tickled? I'd be wary to get into her swing range. And im a 98 kg worth of guy, with combat training. I'd be down on the ground after one hit if she hits the side of my head. And chances are, im not getting back up again.
