Seeing Stars, We Switched Off The City Lights To See The Stars In Your Own Street!

Lights off, stars on! We launched Seeing Stars, a modern fairytale that is only one light switch away. Studio Roosegaarde, the city of Franeker and Unesco Netherlands teamed up to bring back the stars to the people, for a moment of bright connection in darker days. A new way of celebrating that gives a deep sense of collectivity.

By switching off all non-essential lights in Franeker, something that has always been present was revealed: a sky full of wonder. A universal heritage, there for everyone to enjoy, in a COVID-19 time where we often can feel so isolated.

Unesco Netherlands aims to recognise seeing stars as a form of universal heritage.

We have a project page where you can see the amazing photos and the poetic official movie: https://www.studioroosegaarde.net/project/seeing-stars.

We just launched the project so hope you can share it on your great Bored Panda!

Best, Roosegaarde

Hey there, Pandas! My name is Diana (though some prefer to refer to me as Diane, Deanna, and even Liana sometimes), and I am a Community Post Moderator Lead for Bored Panda. As my position title states, I am one of the people (employed Pandas for bamboo) over here who work with the community side of things on this website to ensure all is well, and while at that, I also help various creators and artists get recognition for the incredible work they do by connecting them to a large worldwide audience. Other than that, outside of work, you can find me brewing a nice cup of coffee, making a pizza from scratch, or baking brownies. I also love traveling, concerts, and cats (heavy on that, because I am a cat mom).

Light pollution. It's good to shut out all the artificial light to see the starts. It reminds you that the universe is really huge and stargazing is awesome.
