Female Students Suffer Years Of Discrimination, One Student’s Evidence Finally Ends It

Professors and lecturers are powerful—they speak to bright young minds striving to change the world and can shape the way they see it. However, that doesn’t automatically mean that every staff member on campus takes their role seriously.

A few days ago, Reddit user Smoosa_Champagne made a post on the platform, asking its users to help him understand his buddies’ dissatisfaction with him.

The guy got so sick and tired of one particular academic’s sexist comments toward the women in attendance that he started secretly recording the man and later submitted the footage to the university’s committee.

It was a move he thought was just—until his friends learned what happened and began saying otherwise.

Gender stereotypes can have huge consequences for the careers and income levels of men and women, which can compound into substantial inequalities over the course of a lifespan

We managed to get in touch with the Redditor behind the post, and he told Bored Panda, “The university has a diverse culture overall. But even though the majority of staff are impartial and professional, some continue to retain outdated opinions and get away with acting inappropriately because students are afraid to speak up.

“Numerous students—women in particular—have talked about how they felt uncomfortable or rejected in some particular classes. But since this episode, I’ve noticed more people talking candidly about these problems, which is a positive development.”

The student emphasized that Dr. R.’s teaching manner was really patronizing toward his female peers. “He hardly paid much attention to their responses and frequently suggesting that they lacked the mental capacity to comprehend difficult ideas.

“Many others thought that speaking up would not make a difference, therefore, they didn’t bother. That’s precisely why I decided to act,” the Redditor reiterated.

According to the European Institute for Gender Equality, the birth bed for sexism is gender stereotypes, which aren’t necessarily hostile or harmful in and of themselves.

Many professional realities have been shaped by the belief that women and men have complementary characteristics—for example, that men are individualistic and dominant, while women are caring and collaborative—and the professor seems to stick to this thinking.

However, typical masculine characteristics are frequently valued more highly than typical feminine characteristics, and this time sounds like it’s no different.

In educational contexts, gender stereotyping causes female students to be seen as less talented than male students in all areas of science. For instance, in biology, male students are seen to excel even when their female classmates have higher grades.

Experimental studies reveal that an identical CV and application letter results in different perceived competence levels and job offers depending on whether the applicant is identified as John or Jennifer.

Imaginary differences in perceived skill have also been documented in the evaluation of creative endeavors, such as the design of a house, depending on whether it carried the name of a male or female architect.

Gender stereotypes therefore not only capture how we expect men and women to behave but also communicate how we think they should behave.

So, has the Redditor overstepped? Well, he didn’t do anything. He merely documented what was already happening. So it’s not his actions but the professor’s that got the man fired. After all, the student wasn’t involved in the university’s decision. They did their own investigation and made their own conclusions.

“I hope that misogyny in academia will never be accepted … Because of a professor’s prejudice, no student should feel devalued or deterred from continuing their education,” the Redditor added. “In order to stop this kind of behavior from happening again, I also hope the university implements stricter policies.”

Having done my undergraduate, master's, and doctorate in the 70s and 80s, it is difficult to convey today how seriously degrading it was to be a woman in academia at the time. I am sorry to see it hasn't developed as far as I would have hoped today. Back then we didn't have the option of recording things, and if we had, we'd have been told to keep our pretty little heads out of men's business. Pardon me but f**k you to anyone who does this and anyone who defends it. There are no excuses.

Ridiculous YTA as usual, what they are all missing is that even given the opportunity to "correct his actions" he likely still would have continued to favour male students but just done it more quietly. Someone like that, who regularly alienates and actively thinks less of half the population, should not be teaching.

Yes, and also: if he deserved a second chance to correct his actions, then the committee could give him that, that's not the responsibility of a student. And maybe they already did, maybe he got fired because he's already had multiple second chances.

HE didn't get him fired, the committee got him fired. If it was "just some bad jokes" or "just some badly chosen words", the committee would have concluded that there is no problem and would not have fired him. But apparently they came to the conclusion that he crossed the line, and that it was serious enough to have him fired and not just given a warning.

Did ya'll think that perhaps this student turning in his recording to the university committee was possibly the last straw that the committee needed to fire the instructor? Perhaps they've had other complaints throughout the years, and this time, someone had a recording, which was all the proof they needed to fire him. Perhaps that instructor was on probation. Just a thought. I'm glad the student did what he did.

WTH are these "YTA commenters" talking about. Approaching this professor with the evidence would only make him angry. OP just send it to a committee who did an investigation themselves and came to the same conclusion. This is inappropriate. And women are less likely to be good in logic-based studies? Only if you believe that there is such a binary model in which men are logical and women emotional. As a graduated female engineer I can attest this is a bogus claim.

Bless. I have multiple examples of men telling me to “stop getting emotional”…you know whose voiced is raised and tone is anxious in those moments? Not mine. Not saying I don’t get emotional. Lord knows I do. If we could all just stop with the antiquated biases and get a little better at having grace where it’s needed and strength where it’s needed, we’d make this earth quite a bit nicer.

As a female college instructor, this guy deserves all the upvotes he can get, and the Andrew Tate followers can F off. Professors like this have no place in education. Full stop. At my school, students are encouraged to come to administration and faculty with any concerns, including sexual harassment and discrimination. That women didn’t feel comfortable doing so with this professor tells me that his behavior had been excused for a long time.

All those defending him as "it's just a few jokes". B******t, it is a continuation of men teaching other men that women can be demeaned and thought less of than them on a daily basis. This affects every aspect of a woman's life. She gets paid less than a man for the same job. She is overlooked for promotion both if she wears make-up and dresses nicely (aka. S.e.x.y) and if she tones it down (she must be a lesbian) and yes, to these types that also has an indoctrinated learned set of subtext. The boys in class standing up for him are well on their way to permanently seeing women through his s.exist misogynistic lenses and that is a whole next generation where women are put down, ignored, demeaned intellectually and sexualising constantly.

2% YTA because yes, should have called it out publicly in class but he is only in one class and I know from experience that if you call a teacher out publicly on their behaviour, you WILL be failed that year on every test. But imagine how many classes that guy has been doing this in and how many students he has been degrading - he should not be in the teaching profession and I have zero sympathy.

NTA for eternity. That a*****e teacher got himself fired because of the way he treated people, especially the women. We don't need teachers like that in any kind of school! It takes courage for a woman to turn him in but it takes a lot of courage for aman to do it. He didn't brag about it, he only admitted to 1 person that he did it and that person started telling others. I'm proud of you for turning him in. There are a lot of college students that will change their majors because of a teacher. My oldest sons best friend changed his from Engineering to something with computers because of a couple of teachers.

It's truly shocking that this much backlash is happening saying the professor deserved a chance to change his ways. It's no surprise that if it was vise versa that all those same people would not be saying the same thing. If it was a woman professor that was talking s**t and commenting on mens intelligence, clothing, etc. and saying sexist s**t to the male students in class and favoring women by calling on them more and whatnot you know dam well these same would loose their minds saying you're a b***h man hater and fully go after her. All my fellow men out there for thinking the professor should have gotten a talking to instead of being fired you should really think before speaking. As we all know a lot of us men can't handle person criticism but boy can we hand it out no problem. As a man we really need to get our f*****g s**t together.

It's called "being an ally". And he was a d**n good one. A white straight man once told me, "I don't feel ashamed or guilty, I feel *responsible*" When one of his employees was harassed by a contractor, he found out that anti-harassment rules only applied to full-time employees. He spoke to higher ups and pushed to have the rule apply to *everyone*, whether a contractor, supplier, or visitor.

I’m shocked to vote NTA. This is my nightmare. After 15 yrs, I’m thinking about teaching a class or two, and I’m terrified about saying something questionable and being recorded, or not. This Prof isn’t just an AH, but a dangerous one. How many females changed majors, or just dropped his class? It isn’t okay. I teach 4 hour classes and I know I’ve said f*ck a few times by accident, but this isn’t that. The only thing I’m conflicted about is knowing this Prof may not be able to get another teaching job, but maybe he shouldn’t. Although, when students graduate, they will encounter sexist employers and coworkers. Learning how to navigate the real world in a college setting is another purpose of school. Not every job has HR. Not every employer is PC. Life isn’t fair and people are sexist, racist, ageist, etc.

The professor has very likely been doing this throughout his teaching career. If he teaches somewhere else, he's likely to continue. So no, I don't care if he has to find a new job. As for discrimination, I'd put the onus on the sexist/racist/etc. person to adapt. Learning to navigate the real world shouldn't be taught through putdowns. There are better ways, such as assertiveness workshops and offering resources (such as labour laws). One can also teach those in positions of power. Employers, too, have to learn to navigate the real world. Some refuse to adapt, but I know of some who got used to minding their manners. For example, they learned to compliment people on their work and not their looks.

My aunt, many years ago, took a class on the history of Rome. When she walked in the classroom there were only male students. Turns out it was an history of Rome’s WARS. Everyone looked at her like she was stupid. Except the teacher. He welcomed her and taught the the class. After class he approached her and asked if she meant to take that class, because it might not be what she was expecting (apparently the college had abbreviated the class synopsis) and she admitted it wasn’t. He said, very kindly, that she was welcome, but if she wanted to drop the class he would sign the paper. She decided to stay since it was her last semester and she needed history credits. She actually enjoyed the class and the prof never let anyone give her guff. THAT is how a real teacher behaves.

This guy is a professor and should have known better. As for the people who belittled/wronged your attitude, they’re probably as prejudice as the professor and don’t belong to the new rules of the present.

You didn't get him fired! What a stupid claim. You submitted obviously truthful evidence of what he had been doing. The employer decided to fire him. Personally I'm against firing for this sort of offence because all you've done is create a martyr who hasn't learnt anything. It would be much more productive to insist on relevant training (there really is training out there that can open bigots' minds to how the world really is for others) and reduce/change his duties (with possible reduction in pay) to avoid student content until he is ready to go back. If that doesn't work, fire his a.r.s.e.

Couldn't have been the US as the tenure system would have taken far longer. The professor could have been removed from the classroom and even banned campus but they would still receive their salary until a long process was completed for a firing.

When I was a university, we had a student union. I wonder if raising it with the president of the SU who could then take it to the professor would have been an option, and if so, a better one? If told, and he does it again, then go the HR route.

I feel like this is fine, as long as you are also fine with students filming far-left activists to get them fired, or professors who hate male students. I had a woman professor once who always praised her female students, and ignored or criticized her male students. At first I thought it was just me, but over the semester it became very clear. I wondered if she was going through a divorce and mad at her husband or something.

I had a woman professor once who always praised her female students, and ignored or criticized her male students. At first I thought it was just me, but over the semester it became very clear. I wondered if she was going through a divorce and mad at her husband or something.

Totally fine with calling out this kind of BS regardless of who is doing it.
