To Portray The Complex Relationship Between Wildlife And Humans, I Make These Surreal Artworks (24 Pics)
My name is Philip Kanwischer, I've been working on “Inhospitably Ours” project for the past 5 years. This work thrives under the assumptions formed by the cursory glance. On the surface, much of my work appears to be wildlife photography of animals interaction with humans as if I have captured the fantastical. I strive to create an eerie atmosphere, begging the questions how did he make the animals do that? and, how could he do that to them? I am interested in habitat loss, environmental ethics, human impact in both urban and natural realms. Working in deliberate realism I plan to reveal our existential trauma.
I graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design with a Bachelors of Design with distinction in photography in 2015. I was also the recipient of the Board of Governors Award for my graduating class. Since then have been pursuing my art and exhibiting Internationally. A pivotal point in my recent art career was when I took part in the Canadian Wilderness Artist’s Residency. This expedition was a month long canoe trip up the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City. This furthered my connection and love for nature and fuelled my practice as relating to environmental impact and remote areas of wilderness.
I have been accepted to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where I am currently in my first year of graduate studies. Often combining photographic and sculptural components to dramatize human impact on the natural environment, my work proposes unlikely narratives in which the genre and methods of wildlife photography are implicated. I often spend days out in the wild, working to build a relationship with the land and its inhabitants, enacting the romantic notion of being able to live side by side with animals and nature.

This is beautifully done, but so sad as well. Your arrangement makes me think how we have compartmentalized nature and wild spaces into National Parks and State Parks. I guess I should be glad we have saved any wild spaces at all.

remind me of a book that I read when i was youger ... there was a nightmare where animals without head or tail were chasing the main charactere .... in french, "avoir ni queue ni tête" (do not have no head or tail) is an expresion to describe something (like a story or a quote) very weird, or without sens

This has me wishing it was the bears paw leading the deer not a human. Beingf led to the slaughter or to attend a childs petting zoo....who knows

I think this one is about people putting their trash into the wilderness, which happens quite often. That kills animals, and I believe this is portraying that. Very moving, but sad.

Are they not beautiful. Their gaggling to one another cannot be heard but they do when they fly. We have small gatherings of geese and ducks that fly clost to home and its wonderful to hear them first before you find out which direction they fly.

Love the thinking, great ID of life how it should be. The big animals should be picking off the humans who invade their lands. Not much meat on this one though!

Intriguing. I love "Taking a Stand", it's fantastical, humorous, and odd. "Free" is another one that made me pause and think and feel a little sad. Some of the others don't work as well, in my opinion. The final shot "Unity" has some structural and lighting issues that keep me from being able to suspend disbelief, and "Falling" makes me feel a bit angry.
