School Replaces Detention With Meditation And Results Are Amazing

Robert W. Coleman School in Baltimore sounds like the best school ever. Why? Because there’s no such thing as detention at the Baltimore Elementary.

Yep, you heard that correctly. Instead they have a Mindful Moment Room, a brightly colored “oasis of calm” that looks about as far as you can get from the windowless detention rooms typically used to punish unruly kids. It’s part of an after-school programme called Holistic Me, an initiative that teaches children to practice mindful meditation and breathing exercises while encouraging them to talk to behavioral professionals. The programme works in partnership with a local non-profit called the Holistic Life Foundation, and the results so far have been pretty impressive. In fact, since first taking part in the programme two years ago, Robert W. Coleman hasn’t issued a single suspension.

They should do this in prisons, too. People naturally react to anger and violence with anger and violence. It's animalistic. Give people a chance to think about things and even talk them out, and you will see big changes.

These are LIFE CHANGING habits you are instilling into these children. HOORAY! Most likely they would have never learned this at home. I love it!

I want to see this more in schools and in work environments. Meditation is an excellent way to refocus and de-stress. There is a free guided program out of Australia called Smiling Mind (smilingmind.com.au) that we use at home. There may be others available via apps. It only takes a few minutes and it's great for calming rambunctious kids or overactive nerves. With guided programs, you don't have to know anything about meditation. Just get comfy and follow directions. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Beautiful! People are finally getting smart about how to change behaviours in a positive way. I hope to see more schools using this approach.

this is such a great idea! I really believe that punishing kids, especially when they are so young, is a really bad idea because if you just punish them they will not understand what they did wrong and most importantly they wouldn't know what they should have done instead.

Meditation and proper deep breathing are amazing tools for everyday life. I learned deep breathing as a kid in my drama classes and at first it seemed silly to learn to breath. Now it's a habit and once my mental illness then chronic pain developed I already had that tool to use in times of stress. This should be adopted in as many schools and prisons as possible!

Not that children are dogs, however, when my Pomeranian needs a timeout I have her in my lap and I just tell her to calm down with a very soothing voice!
