That looks delicious, healthy and affordable. That means that you can have a full lunch for like 6,50 - 8 euro.

As per World Health Organization (WHO) 2021 reports, approximately 41 million kids under the age of 5 are overweight globally. And, nearly 340 million children and adolescents aged 5–19 are overweight and obese. Studies show that childhood body mass index (BMI) and obesity are likely to continue into adulthood. Approximately 55% of overweight children go on to be obese in adolescence. There is an 80% chance that obese adolescents will still be obese in adulthood.

This increases the possibility for several diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Childhood obesity has increased tenfold in the past four decades. Many school-going children consume a good amount of their food energy at the institute.

The food served for breakfast or lunch in schools is important as it impacts a child’s health. According to research, school food is considered more nutritious compared to other meals we get from different sources. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) studied the diet quality of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) that serves over 31 million children in the United States every day.

The study examined the quality of food eaten by 2,190 children who were selected as a representative sample nationally. Results indicated that the school-provided lunch had greater nutritional value compared to meals from elsewhere across both age and income categories.

Children who were not a part of the NSLP consumed approximately 58% more total fat and 60% more saturated fat. Their added sugar intake was double the amount than NSLP participants. On the other hand, NSLP students had better food-group composition and more fruits in their diet. Their meals were more favorable in macronutrients as well.

The best meal I’ve ever had in my life was a huge cup of Tom yum soup, also 25 baht, from a vendor in Bangkok who had set herself up in an alley, with her stand made almost completely out of cardboard. It was so good I went back and gave her the last 60 baht I had in my pocket. Random story 😊

In order for children to consume healthy meals, many institutes in the world have implemented their own universal free school meal policies. This helps to ensure that every child, especially the ones from low-income households, gets access to free nutritious food.

Researchers have found an association between these free meals and reduced obesity in many places including California, Chile, and South Korea, among other places. The four boroughs in London that adopted the provision showed reduced levels of obesity as per the Observer.

School districts need to serve the K-12 students meals that follow the federal guidelines. As long as they do so, California’s Department of Education reimburses them for all the expenses that are not covered by the federal reimbursements, such as the costs of reduced-price meals. In the previous school year, the state also provided $150 million for staff training and kitchen infrastructure upgrades so that the implementation could happen smoothly.

Many private schools are Parochial Schools, which are low cost, like the average Catholic Parochial school in NYC where I live is $8,500 a year. I doubt they have fancy meals. There are many types of private schools, not all are fancy academies.

This is likely what the student chose out of a variety. No school is giving kids pizza AND fries AND jello. Yes. There are several USA entries in this article that show a variety of fresh and healthy foods. Save it.

The student probably chose these items out of a selection of things. That's not a standard meal. Besides most kids in the US bring lunch from home anyway. No one is required to eat what the cafeteria serves. You have to pay for whatever you want. I know on days when I wanted to eat my feelings I'd buy pizza and fries, but usually I had a sandwich and fruit from my own house.

Hey!!! That’s near me!! Hollyhocks are our local soccer team!! (On the milk carton)

Since 2023-24, free school meals are permanently available for all elementary and secondary public school students in New Mexico. Their legislation now includes an additional $20 million to fund the infrastructure improvements and encourage made-from-scratch meals.

Kendall Chavez, the governor’s food and hunger coordinator, announced that this bill is critical for “[s]upporting [New Mexico’s] local farmers, ranchers and food businesses and elevating school food as something that’s as important as the books that our kids are reading while they’re in school.”

While some meals seem more nutritious than others, it’s great that educational institutions are now putting effort into making the lunches more healthy. What did you eat during recess in school? Depends entirely on whether it's a cheap school lunch or some real food - and it varies between schools abd municipalities. The quality has gone down back to the 90s' depression era meals, or even worse, which is something of an achievement. Sure, it's free, but more than half of the middle schoolers (grades 7 to 9) skip their meals. Wannna guess why?

As a side note: the sausage floats, and the rest of the ingredients are below it (usually carrot, potato, rutabaga, onion, seasoned with parsley). It isn't really that bad, in the end, quite savory... if made properly and from good ingredients. The plate in display is an example of bad manners - the first about dozen people on the line hog all the sausage bits and leave the rest about 50 with just the veggies, or even just the broth. Veggie lunch is modernly always available without separate notice requirement, at least in the city schools. (The special diets are catered for.)

This is the reason why the USDA in 2017 officially retracted the 2010 regulations that had max caloric servings that schools could give. This meant that Schools had to give the same food to a 5 foot tall 90lb student as to a 6"4 230lb athlete. Many coaches would order fast food for their athletes, as they needed the caloric intake. It also hurt low income kids who many used to eat 2-3 portions due to food insecurity at home. In 2017, the USDA, retracted those restrictions, switching to the more vague appropriate caloric intake a student needs. But some states kept the old regulations, causing issues like this

I wonder if this student is on meal assistance? I've never seen such a sparse lunch before - even free ones. And why can't they bring fruit and snacks from home if they're an athlete and need something before practice? I know I always did.

Empty carbs, fat free chocolate milk is just sugar with no healthy fats, unidentifiable meat swimming in salt soup called "gravy" slapped on no fiber white bread. And not even a full apple? What schools get in tax dollars goes to administrative glut to justify all the bs degrees we have now.

My School Thinks This Fills Up Hungry High Schoolers. It’s American High School In Albany, New York

Lunches are free for schools in my city and surrounding cities. Ever since lunches have been made free, the quantity (and quality) has decreased significantly. This is what we would get for our meal. It took me three bites to finish that chicken mac and cheese. Any snacks you want cost more money, and if you want an extra entree, that’ll cost you about $3 or $4.

USDA regulations require schools to provide Milk to students to ensure students get enough calcium (plus we have a powerful dairy lobby), however Schools were throwing away too much milk, as not enough was being consumed. Since the USDA never specified what type of cows Milk, many switched to Chocolate Milk, which led to most students consuming and the schools meeting their required USDA numbers. USDA says it works, because students get the Calcium, and they do not care about the sugar and chocolate added to make that happen

Eat, maybe? Neither does everyone like carrots. A bag of mini carrots, like, why? The same thing, reversed. I'd take the raisins over the carrots (raw or cooked) any day.

That looks like an "early release day" meal. The prepackaged stuff they send kids home with if school is out before lunch time. It's so they can ensure all kids have access to food that day, just in case they don't have food at home.

Mashed potatoes, sure, though it looks watery... but what those round things are supposed to even be, beats me. Maybe minced meat patties? And note, I've seen a few decades' worth of Finnish school lunches. This is a low point.

You speak from a place of privilege. Most kids don't have choices, they have to follow their caregiver's choices, and a lot of them get school lunches supported by subsidies due to low income, so have no choice but to eat what is given to them by the school. School's need to do better, but politicians in many states are actively denying funding for school lunches.

I just feel like most of the other entries treat children with some dignity, except the US. Most of the European ones have lunches on plates or metal trays, instead of Styrofoam, for example. I'm not even going to talk about the quality of the lunches served, that stuff looks vile.

It’s called a tea egg. Wikipedia: Tea egg is a typical Chinese savory food commonly sold as a snack, in which a boiled egg is cracked slightly and then boiled again in tea, and sauce or spices. It is also known as marble egg because cracks in the egg shell create darkened lines with marble-like patterns.
