211 Amazing Tattoos That Turn Scars Into Works Of Art
Tattoos mean different things to different people around the world. For some they're nothing more than a fashion statement, while others get them for cultural reasons, like the Māori for instance. Many get them as a memento of a time, place, or person. But some people choose to get a tattoo for an entirely different reason, such as to cover up a scar for example.
Check out this list compiled by Bored Panda, and our previous one, to see for yourself what we mean. Some of them conceal the scar tissue completely, while others cleverly interact with them, turning what was once something considered unsightly into something truly beautiful. Don't forget to vote for your favorite! (h/t: Revelist)

Looks like scars from an external fixation hardware for an extreme fracture of the femur to me.
Load More Replies...I love how the scarring actually gives the tattoo so much depth. Beautiful!!
I've a 3 year old bone surgery scar at the same spot, still sensitive to touch. Thinking about getting a tattoo there made me feel queasy.
Yer, the artists placement has really made the difference to just an average cover , to an amazing one ...Nailed it!!
Looks like a Chiari scar, anyhow it's beautiful. Shows the strength of this person!
Reminds me of the Glasgow saying - "do you think my head zips up the back?"
I have the same scar but it's longer. I had a tumor on my spinal cord. Everyone loves seeing my scar. I just might add a tattoo to it one day.
I have keloid scars everywhere on my body, all of the ones that were stitched have stayed ever since the one that was done when I was 9, I am 28 now.
That was for the lady at the bottom saying they disappear with time, sometimes they dont
Load More Replies...Bring in the artistés! Exchange your scars for works of art and flights of fancy!!
That is an extremely feminine looking tattoo, which is ironic because scars usually aren't. You are one tough woman and I mean that in the nicest way posible.
It took me a literal minute to find the scar.... this one is really well done
If, God forbid, I'm ever in her position, I am going to do what she has done & hide missing anatomy with a beautiful tattoo. Hats off to the artist ; prayers for a long, healthy life for this brave woman.
As an artist -- I hope and pray that someday we will ALL be this gifted and creative in our work ... Stunning creation/s!!
This is how post back surgery looks once the suture scars disappear. Like the choice in tattoo.
Are you trying to use these as a lesson, I'm pretty sure we can tell whate kind of surgery is going on..
Load More Replies...A beautiful picture, but my-oh-my the symbology is stunning. I can feel the wild joy set free from that cage.
after just seeing Bored Panda's post on tattoo's years later, i have new opinions on watercolor tattoos. http://www.ramadanmubarakimages2017.solutions/
after just seeing Bored Panda's post on tattoo's years later, i have new opinions on watercolor tattoos. mostly, stay away from heavy use of red, orange, and yellow if you can as they tend to fade quite quickly. this is beautiful none the less.
That is one of the most beautiful tattoos I have ever seen. Love it.
Can someone please tell this guy his tattoo is awesome but please wash his feet !
I would actually get this turtle 🐢 scar anyways, it's so beautiful! (Except for the dirty foot!)
Does tattooing over scar tissue like this hurt more than normal or is it about the same?
Its not hurting because after the surgery there is no neuron cells left so you shouldnt feel anything
Load More Replies...Gorgeous tattoo! Does anyone know what that scar is caused by? It looks like it was CRAZY painful
I would guess a foot neuroma. I have the same scar , minus the tattoo. It's a good one !
A dorsal approach neuroma resection scar usually doesn’t extend anywhere near this far proximally. This is more likely an internal fracture fixation or osteotomy on the the 3rd and 4th metatarsals
Load More Replies...Very creative!! A stitch in time ... completely changes the landscape!
Nancy, black is great for obscuring what's underneath. Lighter colors can be inadequate for coverup. And maybe she is gothic, who knows.
Load More Replies...I'm prepared for the eventuality that I might need to do this one day. My question is, will I finally be allowed to walk around in public w/o a shirt when I do??
The thing most people object to is Female Nipples On Display. No nips, nothing to object to!
Load More Replies...you know the beauty of a tattooed breast..?? they never look naked..which in turn takes away the look of going topless..
Beautifull transformation. I am sure those ar not stretch marks. I have the same scars. They were made at a very bad time in a very bad place.
Just gonna say this straight... those are self harm scars.. how do i know ?? I used to self harm and mine look almost exactly the f*****g same... so stop being such a know it all and accept that you are wrong..
I know it, too! I am 13 and went through it when I was 11. I was diagnosed with depression (not self-diagonosed) a year later. I think it could be because my mom died.
Load More Replies...As for john, either you are a troll or you should just be really greatfull that this darkness hasnt touched any part of you or your loved ones. (As far as you know)
I almost wish John is serious because it would mean he has never had to deal with the nightmare of self harm. But from someone who has self-harmed and bears the scars for it, unfortunately, those are from self-harm.
I don't really understand why people feel the need to attack John L simply for not recognizing or misunderstanding the pic. I see no harm there and definitely no harm meant to be done from his side. I enjoy Johns' comments in general because they are uplifting and humorous. Therefore this is not a case of "trolling" but of simple misunderstanding. So I suggest next time when you would find a comment of someone not understanding the issue that is important to you, try to inform them in a polite manner and u might make something constructive. Instead of resolving to attacking a stranger whose intent u don't understand. U just end up upsetting yourself, while there might not be a reason to.
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure John is just trolling lol no ones that stupid.
Load More Replies...They're definitely cut scars. Stretch marks are normally darker, but, in Johns defence, I have old scars and old stretch marks on my stomach, both of which are white, and I actually can't tell the difference between which are scars and which are stretch marks. They're all white lines that look the same. However, to reiterate, the marks in this photo are definitely not stretch marks, as they are too raised.
Tattoo owner here and I agree they do rock, that's why I got it!
Load More Replies...Oh, hey! I have the same scar! Glad to see there's something cool to be done about it! :)
I agree, i like how she decided to put a positive spin on the scars rather than totally obscure them
Load More Replies...hi! this is my tattoo, and my photo was stolen from the account credited on this post. please give my account credit instead! breakingtheangels.tumblr.com !!!
hi! this is actually my tattoo. this girl stole my photo and put it on her tumblr instead! if you cold give me credit instead, my tumblr is breakingtheangels.tumblr.com ! thank you!
Molly, this is very insensitive. Please consider other's feelings before posting these kinds of comments.
Load More Replies...“What inspired me to get tattoos to cover my scars was so whenever I was down or having a bad day, I could look down at my newly painted arm and remember that overcoming something can lead to beautiful things. My next step is to cover the scars of my other arm and my leg. It’s never easy, but by getting them covered up, it’s a little bit like closure.” — Lauren S.
I'm glad you were able to stop, and I love the reasoning behind getting the tattoo :o)
Lauren S - I love your artistic expression of an amazingly difficult perspective shift. You are both brave and beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
I have a scar from intervening on a friend cutting themself, I hope that my friend will make a good decision like you did
I'm so glad you were able to fight through it and find healthier coping strategies. It's the hardest thing to do, and I truly commend you. Keep shining.
Nice tattoo and nice that you stopped self-harm. Just my opinion but I would but a little bit of blueish ink under the black so the tattoo would have a deeper color (and would be less likely to turn green in 5 years too ^^) Best of luck <3 and if you need help you can talk to people who care about you! Never forget that
My arms are scarred a bit worse than yours & am now thinking I could cover them with a tattoo too. Stopped cutting 15 yrs ago. Best wishes
Blessings on you for stopping, dear! It's a hard thing, but a good one! I'm 10+ years on myself, 30+ years of "shaving cuts" on the ankles
Load More Replies...Congratulations for finding g the strength to move forwards xx Burney.... UK
Those are not stretch marks. That person was a cutter.
Load More Replies...Wow excellent way to obscure the harming, even though some of the scarring is outside the tattoo, i think the image draws the eye away from the scars
It also makes it more difficult to tell that the scars are the result of self harm. Like he could be trying to cover up road rash or someting.
Load More Replies...As a person who's self harmed and has met people who have also self harmed, I'm pretty sure those are scars from hurting oneself... just saying.
Cooo Viking tattoo sorry about the self harm, I can relate. Sadly.
I can too. And stopping IS possible, it's just a process rather than an instant cure. As to my own healing, I still want to. 10+ years on.
Load More Replies...I can't imagine the pain that caused that scar tissue, nor would I want to nor experience it. That's a lengthy heal.
(As in two successes in one picture, not 'picture 2 is better that picture 1..)
Load More Replies...That is a fantastic tattoo, but I do have to wonder a bit about the surgeon. who created such a misshapen breast.
It depends from the kind of cancer: Total mastectomy means that also part of the skin must be removed and the final result is like that
Load More Replies...Reconstruction can be like that, otherwise it would be completely flat
Load More Replies...“I got a Sylvia Plath tattoo. She’s my absolute favorite poet/author. Her quote ‘I am. I am. I am’ (from her book ‘The Bell Jar’) symbolizes that suicide could’ve been the end for me, but I’m here, ‘I am’ I am here, I am alive and I am determined to get through this. The cat is Sylvia’s drawing called ‘Curious French Cat’ and it also symbolizes self-harm and depression — but how it’s not the answer anymore.” — Shannon P.
The Bell Jar was like reading a narrative of my own mind. That book means so much to me. Love the tattoo.
Same. It's one of my favourite books. Gives such insight that it's hard not to cry.
Load More Replies...people love you, friend. always remember that. That's what got me through my depression.
I'm still getting through, and I have driven away all my friends. I'm not always sure if I'm loved.
Load More Replies...I actually have "I am" tattooed on my wrist. Wasn't to cover a scar but to save my life from suicide. Looks great on you. Keep fighting.
Burnice Burke 1 minute ago Congratulations for finding g the strength to move forwards xx Burney.... UK
I have this exact same scar except I have two little holes next to it where the drainage tubes were. Never tattooed it, though.
“I saw this quote back when I was in seventh grade. I knew one day that I will have this tatted on me. I didn’t start self-harming until sophomore year in high school. As a freshmen in college last year, I finally got this quote on my body.” — Zari S.
you are amazing and i am glad you are getting over the depression alll ways knw that you are loved and you aren't alone
If you click on the little link bottom left you get to their website-I can't read it but the tattoos are amazing.
Load More Replies...The whole concept of the woman floating (not falling) is fortuitous; I love it. Looks like a lot of other images, fish, branch, appendage like a creature's leg, fun!
Aahhhh ! Tigersssss ! This is one tattoo I would get ...if I had to get one ...
I love the fact that the scar actually wasnt covered up, but instead the tatoo kind of circles around it, making the scar part of it
My favourites are all ones that highlight rather than conceal the scars
Load More Replies...I'm #34 but I didn't add myself. I'm honored to be amongst these beautiful tattoos and the struggle they show. I'm adding to my back, soon and look forward to having even more beauty over that scar. I didn't get to choose scoliosis, the surgery to correct it, coding afterwards (when my heart and lungs decided they'd take a break from keeping me alive), receiving 6 pints of blood, nor the painful and painfully slow recovery. But, I have control over how I display my scars. The nerve damage over my hip is so painful, I cannot stand the idea of the tattoo needle. Maybe one day I can beautify that one, too.
I'm proud of you for hanging in there despite the pain and ugly days. Way to choose to see beauty through the pain. I get it.
Load More Replies...unfortunately, this red ink will fade away. Never mind, it's pretty right now. :)
It took me a while. Thought it was antennae with floating dots on top...
"Out of chocolate" is a state that makes panda sad. (Quickly shares chocolate with Out of chocolate) ^_^
Load More Replies...I love the whole thing but maybe make the hands look a little more like hands?
I dunno. It's all about embracing your scars and making them bearable, you know?
Load More Replies...Idk the left hand seems wrong by to me but a beautiful tattoo other than that
Cool idea but the hands look silly. Left hand shouldn't have a shadow. Not a good tattoo job.
I have a very similar scar from a kidney removal. I am thinking of a tattoo very similar but I'm scared of the pain. Scale of 1-10 1 being little pain 10 being horrible pain how was the pain?
Beautiful, can't even tell there was a scar with the way the tattoo is done
I would have as a tornado, and for a touch of humor, with a cow in it!
Typical Hungarian tulip, that we can observe as an element on traditional furniture decoration, used to cover up a deep scar left after an ateroma removal.
This is the best. Not because I'm hungarian, because I like the realize
Still I dont get why the internet (guidelines) are ok with a tattooed nipple (or male ones) but not with a real female one... *freedom for all nipples* btw really good job on this one :)
The color and shading of the nipple is amazing! I had to look twice to realize they were inked on!
It's great but they should have shaded in the older tattoo with more color because it's fading
Maybe it was sentimental and she wanted left as is.
Load More Replies...Lady came in today with this gnarly scar from skin cancer and all she wanted was to hide it even if it didnt hold up.
“Self-harm was a way I coped with my depressive and suicidal episodes. I would feel all this anger built up inside of me and I wanted to find some kind of release. But with depression, I wanted to hurt myself because I felt like I deserved it. So, my arms would almost be covered in cuts daily. It all started with a small cut as a cry for help, but very quickly turned into an addiction. When I had motivation to get better, I wanted something beautiful on my arm to cover these scars up. Now, I have a tattoo that says ‘This too shall pass’ with a peony that symbolizes healing. Whenever I have urges to self-harm, I instantly look to my arm to where I usually cut and I see this beautiful tattoo with a meaningful message and I just cry it out until the feeling has passed. It has helped me, and has also sparked up the conversation of mental health with others! It’s more than just a tattoo, it’s my journey to recovery.” — Reshmi C.
thank you for sharing i am so glad you got over the depresSion and i hope you are able to live a long long life, the best of luck -grace bohmer

Beautiful. Despite all those wonderful tattooos before it, this ismy favourite.
I totally agree! it somehow shows the development from a sad soul to a really strong one <3 hopefully it shows people in trouble that there is a silver lining!
Load More Replies...Any German speakers around to tell me what the tattoo says? I know kopfen is head but that's about it!
does anyone know the artist? i have similar scars and love the tattoo
This is my second tattoo, done on June 5, 2012. I came across this phrase a few months ago and knew right away that I wanted it done. To make a very long story short, I’ve gone through many surgeries, severe allergies, and overall tons of health issues throughout my life (you can sort of see part of my main scar here that goes across my entire stomach and bottom left side). The number one reaction I hate getting is one like “Poor Lauren, that’s so terrible, I feel so bad for you!”. I don’t like to be pitied and felt sorry for over issues that I cannot control. I was born with what life gave me, and I’ve always just dealt with it without sitting around and feeling sorry for myself or wanting pity from others.
I have a 26 yr old daughter w that attitude too! She's my hero. She just goes on about the business (& pleasure) if living.
Tell your daughter that I (and I'm sure everyone else) loves her and supports her
Load More Replies...What a great attitude. You are a cool chick. Not enough as brave as you.
I know how you feel, I've had medical issues from being a child which has taken over 45 years to diagnose, even though I knew all along that I had it.I don't need pity either I just need people to say go on then do it, not oh you shouldn't/can't do that. Living with illness for so long we know our limits.
No sadness is necessary. You are full of courage. We do need to live with what we are given. I felt the same with my cancer. It was ok, it had to be and my breast had to go. And my reconstruction scars came from my choice. I choose to have the DIEP FLAP. It was an excellent job but now I feel I would like a couple of tattoos. I get funny looks from my hubby as I am 71 but I have a decent upper body & I think some stems of tiny flowers would make me happy even tho the scars are neat and tidy. I am looking for just the right one.
The S in sad looks a little like an R, totally doable to add a second quote: There's everything rad about it.. just a thought.
I love how it turns the scar into a reminder , instead of trying to hide it
Looks like she's lost weight in the second picture. Good for her if that's the case, if not then that tattoo is awesome on multiple levels!
Pretty sure she got surgery to get extra skin off after losing weight, and the second is while both tattoo and scar healed and body adjusted
Load More Replies...we harm ourselves because we hurt, or maybe because someone has hurt us. That's where the self-mutilation comes in. We think we deserve it. We want so badly to end it, but we don't know how. That' where death comes in. And we are experiencing dark times, thus, bringing in the "dark side" as you choose to call it.
Load More Replies...I wonder what surgery leaves a scar like that. Anyway, perfectlly hidden.
A skin free flap. Basically they took some skin + arteries from her arm and put it to cover another place. :)
Load More Replies...Not from her point of view. I got my tatt 'upside down' because i want to be able to see it properly every day. It's's for me, not other people.
Load More Replies...I know this isn't the point, but how did they get that scar so straight?!
bast one it is absolutely beautiful and is simple in color but complex in design love it
She received that scar from a nasty car accident. It was the other persons fault! Thankfully i was able to work over the scar, some can be super difficult to work on.
The scar itself looks like a Phoenix anyone else see it?
Load More Replies...When I see your scars I feel your pain. When I see your tattoo I feel your strength!
That's superb surgery by the way, perfect closure. Pity no colour in the rose.
Amazing how the vines are used to cover the scaring. It just makes it appear 3d. It really gives it life.
I like the thorns are on the vine; it reminds her of the pain she's gone through and the roses remind her that she is beautiful!
Gotta have a sense of humour, I'm in the hospital a lot with heart problems, all the nurses and Drs that see it think it's quite amusing!!!

Load More Replies...I'll have to remember this (I'm looking at a 3rd back surgery, 2 lumbar the next will be cervical)
I am sending you all the strength in the universe to go through the upcoming surgeries. ❤
Load More Replies...I have a huge scar on my leg from multiple surgeries... these make me what to get tattooed so bad!
I LOVE Pierce The Veil! A Match Into Water is one of my favorite songs, and I really, really love that quote. Probably my favorite one so far :)
*the quote is from Hold On 'Till May, not A Match Into Water. Just clarifying.
Load More Replies...In the legend of Zelda, particularly in the ocarina of time and majoras mask, you can capture pink recovery fairies in bottles and release them to heal you. If you die while you're in battle and you have a recovery fairy, it will automatically revive you, effectively giving yourself another chance to beat the boss. I got my tattoo as a reminder to myself that even though i don't have a recovery fairy on hand, there's still hope and I don't still have another chance to try.
Does anyone know what this scar is from? the shape is peculiar for a scar
Almost looks like he/she tried to burn off an old tattoo by themselves. You can see a bit of black ink around the edges of the scar
Load More Replies...So cute and feminine. They are a work of art and deserve to not be constantly reminded of their scars. Scars are part of the journey, and this is gorgeous. (I used they/them pronouns bc I do not want to get it wrong. They could be a woman. Idk)
If only there were color it'd be gorgeous. Nice nevertheless.
Load More Replies...I want to get a mandala type flower like that to cover my self harm scars on my wrist, and this is beautiful inspiration!
My heart breaks for those who self-harm. Thank you all tattooists. You help them heal and that is a blessing.
This is amazing, you can't even see the scars! What does the writing say?
«Sweet Life» Italian «(I) love you» Italian «Don't give up» French
Load More Replies...I think it'd be a good one to cover a heart surgery scar. It would represent the fact that you're a member of the zipper club.
I Haven’t Self Harmed Since I Got This, About 2 Months Ago.the Semi Colon Represents Suicide Awareness. When A Writer Uses A Semicolon, They Could Have Ended The Sentence, But They Didn’t. You Are The Author. The Sentence Is Your Life. The Ekg Heartbeat Is For When I Contemplated Suicide.
An old post, I hope you’re doing ok, thank you for sharing your story for those who need it. <3
Load More Replies...Glad you chose to not end it. This is a very strong message. Thank you for sharing!
Cont x2: I had the presence of mind to think and act the way I did. He still suffers severe depression but it's getting better.
Cont: throat because he swallowed a bunch of sleeping pills before I got home. Scariest moment of my life but he is still with us and I'm
The semicolon is such a strong symbol. I have had to physically shove my fingers down someone one very dear to me's (that looks weird)
I love how the bigger scars are used for the white shading, it all blends so well!
I broke my back in a paragliding accident. The tattoo tells the story of why I crashed, and everything I learned from it. Nobody notices my scar anymore. 😊
Wow that's amazing. I like the ones that aren't actually covering the scar, but are along side them and they're so good that people don't even notice the scars! Is your back healed now? Hope you're still able to do the things you want to do <3
Load More Replies...Very nice, stylized, and refined -- this should still GOOD in years to come -- do not color it or add any more to it!
ummm more like you need to read it again - it says "scars" but the ink is too close....now - for a positive review, I'm sorry you had to have scars, but am happy you're giving yourself the second chance
Load More Replies...My late wife had Chiari surgery and would have liked this idea... God Bless!
I love the ACM on the zipper pull, only us sufferers even know what the abbreviation is ❤️
Load More Replies...My son had this surgery at 4 he is 14 now and is very sensitive ab his scar but I tell him it's his battle scar and he's my hero. He was so much stronger than I could have been our kids are so resilient.
I saw another similar heart beat tattoo. The woman told it was her baby's lasts beats printed out from the electro-cardiograph. Very sad.
As a person who had multiple miscarriages, I find that beautiful and sad both.
Load More Replies...My view by turning my phone around and enlarging? AMAZING. The artist did an excellent job.
Load More Replies...I am guessing the purple ribbon is for " domestic" * violence. Admiring the bravery. ............ In Australia it is white ribbons. * as if violence is tamed. i say partner violence.
It's for the chiari ribbon. This person underwent decompression surgery. CHIARI STRONG!!

I think you look even stupider getting This upset at someone you don’t know for posting a pic, go post hateful comments on your own social media why didn’t you comment the same under the selfie above hers? I know why , I hate your kind🖕🏽
Load More Replies...After the loss of my daughter at 4 1/2 months to SIDS I lost a large part of myself... My failed suicide attempt left both of my arms with severe scars & I needed something to remind me to keep going, and honor my daughter's memory. I haven't self harmed in a little over a year — baby steps.
This is a great post and I'm happy for people and their choices to cover their scars ♥ But I'm seeing lots of negative comments lately, come on people let's do better, let's not focus in the bad or ugly things. My grandma used to say: If you've got nothing good to say, better don't say anything :)
I'm so happy for especially the people who had their self-harm scars covered. It's really a battle to stop sometimes. I know first-hand.
Some of them are so amazing, you can't even see the scars anymore. I wish mine were less, so that I could get a tattoo, but my skin is so deformed now that I don't think tattoos would cover it :/
Load More Replies...I started to browse this gallery only to be stopped by my partner... turns out I was crying without even knowing. The amount of bravery and strength in those posts - mostly by people that went through self-harm or surgeries - is overwhelming. Thank you, signed: ex-cutter-too.
As a student nurse this is reAlly cool recognizing which scars are from trauma or surgery. As a survivor of self harm and depression for ten years, 2 years healed, it's beautiful how some shoes to turn their pain to something beautiful. As an artist though some you can tell is only one redneck step above stick poke method.
I disagree that scars are unsightly. Maybe I just feel that way because I have so many :)
I think it depends on the scar, but generally I agree... most of these tattoos just highlight a scar that wouldn't be a big deal if left alone.
Load More Replies...If I was considering a tattoo for my scars, I would consider something else first. There are creams that actually reduce them. And there is also laser treatment, along with surgical treatment. Odds are that a much smaller tattoo would be required if not all of the scar was removed. I have quite a few shrapnel scars, over different parts of my body, I earned them the hard way, and would never try to have them removed.
I can't help but think...won't it hurt even more if a tattoo is done on a scar? But besides that question, I think all of them are so beautiful and creative, all a reminder that although there are tragedies in life, there are also blessings. :)
really nice.might have one to cover my breast cancer scare ang gall bladder removal ..
If that's what you want, go for it. Just take your time to find a good artist you feel comfortable with.
Load More Replies...😙Way to overcome! But, umm....204 is not a tattoo and 205 is a selfie of some dude... Anyway, off to Google some ribbon meanings. 😉
