The worldwide pandemic has not just put a pause on our lives, it made us reevaluate our values and what we want from life as a whole. By spending more time in the comfort of our homes, we had a chance to sit back and reflect on the environment that we spend so much time in.

Many of us started wondering if we are truly happy with the way our home looks and whether we are satisfied with the way it makes us feel. The boom of renovations, remodeling, home DIY projects, and redesigns followed as we rolled up our sleeves and worked on the home projects we never thought we wanted or needed before.

Must have a great Manager to allow them to bother with this level of organization. A lot of places are more about just trying to get products on the floor quickly and to the right places and trying to make things "look pretty" isn't considered "productive".

It's these stores with this much orderly displays that make me respect the tidiness more. I will go to the other end of the store when I've changed my mind on something. Just as well, even though I may not be the store's employee, if I see a shelf I badly want organized I'll do it. Idc. No, I don't want a job with them because I know I won't be hired to organize the shelves just so. I'll do it because I love to.

Not a good way to store spices. In clear jars like that, they're going to fade in colour and lose their flavour within a couple of months. Either keep that rack inside a cupboard door in the dark, or change your jars to dark glass so they'll last longer. Having said that, however, it LOOKS beautiful! LOL!

Now that the pandemic is over, the tendency to better take care of ourselves and our homes is not going anywhere. Partly because, for many workers, their homes have also turned into their permanent offices. And partly because, after trying out working around the home, people realized how much fun it is.

Redditor Hansottowirtz is one of the people who eagerly took up a DIY project to organize his home. “I like cooking, 3D printing and foreign cuisines and tastes, so this seemed like a good opportunity to learn about all of those at once,” he told Bored Panda.

The result was this spice rack he designed using old botanical books and a 3D printer as shared on this Reddit community. Hansottowirtz said that the idea came after he felt that most spice racks he found online weren't special enough.

From the post: " I bought a Philips 6-Outlet Extender Surge Protector with USB so the surge protector wouldn’t have to be on the ground. Then I wound up any excess cord with Velcro (generic from Microcenter) and hung the loop on a Command hook attached to the back of the desk. It’s not perfect because the monitor has a heavy cube that is just sitting on the desk right now. But it works for now!"

The first step of the process for Hansottowirtz was taking a very good look at the images. “I started with the botanical drawings from Wikipedia but quickly found out that there are many hard-to-find old botanical books with beautiful drawings. All the sources are listed on Github.”

Most of the hours were spent on searching the right plants in those books, then cutting them out using Photoshop and lastly, creating a label for them, the Redditor told us. “Next to that, I designed the rack in Fusion 360 and did many test prints before arriving at the current design.”

Although Hansottowirtz is very happy with the result he came up with, he agrees that there are multiple things that can be improved. “The fit of the jars on the rack is not very stable and the Ikea jars let UV light through, which degrades the spices faster,” he noted and added that the same jars “don't have a perfect seal.”

Moreover, “the printing quality of the labels isn't good enough as I printed them on the office printer. I'm looking into professional printing now and might start selling them on Etsy soon,” Hansottowirtz added.

Before Hansottowirtz designed this rack, he said that he didn't know a lot about spices. “I've learned so much while doing the research. If you don't know everything beforehand, try to learn things along the way, and you'll always enjoy the process better.”

It is beautifully arranged, but I would put the stand mixer on a lower shelf : it is one of the heavier item, so it would stabilise the shelf and less risk to let it fall on you when grabbing it.

100% this except the mixer looks just a bit too big to fit between the shelves.

My thoughts exactly. I don't have the floor or wall space to allow for such generous shelving. I wouldn't be able to fit even one of those units in my kitchen.

So I'm going to ask this... how on earth do you keep everything grease-free when you cook. It's bound to get on things and then dust settles on top of that. I absolutely LOVE your idea and it's gorgeous, I'm just curious cuz I have a small kitchen.

I stayed in a tiny holiday place last month, the kitchen was a cupboard about the size of a wardrobe. You opened the upper doors to the work surface, hob, sink, microwave, and shelves. The lower half had the fridge, dishwasher and cupboard under sink. Then you closed the doors and it disappeared. I wish I knew how to post a photo of it.

I like how it looks but I get a headache if in a room with a wall of vinyl albums arranged like this, so this might do the same thing. Took me a few weeks visiting my sister's house to realise - headache every time but only in that room. Something about the effect of the stripes.

The English-American journalist Alistair Cooke (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alistair_Cooke) had a large collection of books about America. On his bookshelves he put the books about Florida down in the bottom right, the books about California half way up on the left, and so on.

Quite an assumption. I know a couple of people who sort their books like this, and they read them a lot, they just like the way it looks too. You can love the visual aspect of your book rack and love reading, it doesn't have to be one or the other.

That looks really pretty but there is a system as how merchandise is displayed. The stuff they want to sell goes eye level. Stuff dangerous to little kids goes up higher. Company sales people actually have to be aggressive just to get their product on the shelf in a retail store especially a grocery. Who gets more product etc is all a big battle. Who gets the end caps, who gets the products towards the ends of the isles. It's all a song and dance that means big bucks to those who get the best placement. And I doubt it has any connection to color organization. Color on the product however is highly researched to grab your attention. I worked retail all through college and part time when I substituted. Mostly as the manager.

I see all these and not only do I wish I had something so beautifully organized, I wish I had such an involved hobby to begin with. I think I might just want to choose something to random to start collecting. People make fun of all these folks that have 10,000 rabbit figurines in their house or something like that, but I find myself wishing I had some thing that I liked that much.

The tiny lego bar with the clip/claw on the end was what drove me to sort the lego, larger blocks by color in old chocolate tubs wrapped in vinyl and the smaller bits by type in "toolboxes" that are for sorting screws/bolts/washers etc. Specific style parts like wheels and the circular satellite dish style etc have their own tuff boxes

Wow!!! I've never worked anywhere where the office provided snacks and water

I would not like to work in a place that had unhealthy snacks constantly tempting me.

Why would one need so many snacks at work?

I don't think this is just the poster's snacks, I think it is the office snacks

I can't relate to people using only half of their pantry space. You can keep so many different foods in there, it won't look as nice as this half empty pantry, but you'll have lots of food.

My pantry is tiny but I could live off it for weeks probably. It's not pretty yet still organised and there sure is not that much wasted space.

That seems like just throwing everything out (or into a different cupboard/room), doesn't really fit in an article about organizing?

I have an area soooooo similar to this. Shelf by the kitchen window, dishwasher to the left. To the right is where my back and basement doors are. So it becomes a holding area for stuff that belongs in the basement or garage "later", and shoes on the way in, boxes to go out, etc. I get used to looking at it so it sits there. I've finally organized mine too and my kitchen looks bigger lol!!

I purchased two large shelf units and we already had the chrome industrial work table, which gave us the pantry that we needed.
