I think all of us can wholeheartedly agree that the internet is full of amazing artists. One of the most popular types of content that can be found when surfing the web is definitely comics. There can be various types of comics: wholesome, cute, dark, and even wildly sarcastic.

Today, we’d like to focus on Sorrowbacon, whose work shows a certain perception of the world we live in, highlighting it in an irreverently sarcastic way.

Bored Panda reached out to the artist to find out a little bit more.

"Sorrowbacon is a comic written and illustrated by Millie Ho. The comic stars Food Bringer (girl in the MCR shirt) and Sociopathic Cat (white cat with pink bow), and other characters ranging from octopus roommates to werewolf dads. Inspired by my favorite things (music, movies, hobbies, etc.) and the weirdness of everyday life.

I've always been writing and drawing since I was a kid, and started sorrowbacon to share them and hopefully entertain people, too.”

I (generally) don't like other people and my cat doesn't like other cats. We're a great pair/duo

First, we asked the artist if she had any major influences in her life that might've helped her to develop and refine her style.

"My influences include anime, Mark Ryden, and Renaissance-era paintings. While they're all different stylistically, they all have that sense of drama and narrative tension I'm drawn to. I also love music and graffiti art, so some of that seeps into the comics, too."

RELATED:

Art, in any kind of form, takes a lot of time not only to practice but also to produce, therefore we asked Millie how long it takes her to fully finish her comics.

"Sometimes thirty minutes, sometimes an hour or two. Depends on how fancy the comic idea is."

Being an artist is not easy, one can easily encounter a lack of inspiration, burnout, etc, so we wanted to ask Ho about her ideas for the comics.

"Ideas come to me randomly and then I just jot them down. I have a notebook where I keep these doodles. Periodically I'll flip through them and decide which ones are good enough to turn into a comic."

As we mentioned before, sometimes creative work can cause quite a burnout, therefore we asked the artist how she dealt with that as well.

"Sure. I think knowing when to take a break is just as important as churning out new work on a regular basis. Usually, I'll just take a walk or listen to music or do some other activity to get my brain to relax for a bit, then come back to the work with fresh eyes."

We also asked Millie about how people reacted to her work.

"It ranges from 'Aww' to 'What the hell?' to 'HAHAHA!!!' I guess you can say it's polarizing. I appreciate the people who like sorrowbacon and have said nice things about the comic. I definitely create for them."

The creative process is not easy, but there are some enjoyable parts about it.

"I like creating the final comic. While ideating and writing dialogue and coming up with character designs are always fun, nothing beats sending a comic out into the world."

We also asked about the inspiration behind the artist's Instagram account.

"I had a website, and other social media accounts so Instagram was just the natural next step. The platform seems easy for people to find comics and to see more of the things they like, so it's been good for discovery."

Digital art and art, in general, is not easy and requires a lot of patience, time, resources, and in most cases even money, therefore we wanted to know how the talented comic artist started her own career in digital art.

"For art, my background is mostly in painting. Here's a portrait I did of Sociopathic Cat, one of the main characters of sorrowbacon. I love traditional mediums such as watercolors and paints. They're great to work with when I want to relax or work through ideas without an audience."

Artists tend to get motivated by a lot of things such as curiosity, the search for beauty, or even meaning. Therefore, we asked Millie about that too.

"Definitely a search for meaning. Life is weird and messy but also full of really beautiful and amazing moments. Drawing sorrowbacon is a way to make sense of it all, and hopefully, entertain people as well."
