Artist Who Made People Cry With Her Animal Comics Is Back With Another Tearjerker, And It Might Be Her Saddest One Yet
Freelance illustrator and Digital Media student from Germany Jenny Jinya has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on numerous platforms with her animals-meet-Death comics. And if you’re alarmed by that thought, don’t be. Not only do the comics strongly advocate animal rights, but Jenny’s version of Death isn’t a villain also. Rather, a compassionate guide, leading the critters to their new home.
The series started off with ‘Good Boy’ and ‘Black Cat’ and eventually moved towards bunnies and elephants, but this time Jenny directs everyone’s attention to neglected animals we rarely talk about as suffering pets — parrots.

Jenny thinks there are many different reasons why parents buy their children so-called pocket pets. “Just like hamsters and fish, birds are thought to be small animals that do not require much care. However, when these little creatures suddenly start to make a mess, people realize that they have not done enough research,” she told Bored Panda.
“Parrots like budgerigars are small, pretty, and also quite inexpensive. Often, it probably is simply underestimated how wild and complex these animals are. We are talking about exotic birds that are inherently wild. These birds are not decoration, they are loud, they want to fly, they need attention. You can’t just put them next to grandma’s flower pot and ignore them,” Jenny explained.
Here’s what the artist had to say when sharing the comic
International animal protection organization In Defense of Animals agreed that parrots can be entertaining and beautiful to look at; they are smart, can learn tricks, and may provide companionship to some people.
But the organization also agreed that the companion parrot has joined the ranks alongside the most discarded, homeless pets in America. “Even if captive-bred, they possess the same wild traits as their wild-born cousins who live in the jungles and rainforests. The parrots’ loud vocalizations help them communicate with mates and neighboring flocks in the distance. The larger species of parrots have raucous, ear-shattering screams that can be heard from miles away. The smaller parrots can be heard from equal distances with their shrill, ear-piercing screams that are often repetitive and annoying. Even the smallest parrots like the little budgerigar (commonly called budgie or parakeet) have been known to be too loud and nerve-wracking for some people,” In Defense of Animals wrote on their website.
Jenny highlighted that pets can be great and very important to children. “That being said, parents should be aware that a child may not always be able to meet all the requirements of an animal. One should not leave this responsibility completely to the child and before each purchase, one should inform oneself sufficiently about what one is getting involved with,” the artist added.
And here’s how the people responded to it
My dad had a parrot called Chubby. For the less observant of you yes, Chubby Brown. It didn't talk but liked to 'talk'. My dad loved him and Chubby used to go around the house with my dad and snuggle up to my dads beard. Chubby died 3 years ago (he was just old) and my dad looked so miserable without him. I offered to buy him another one and my dad said "Rich, son, Chubby was my friend. He lived a few years longer than parrots usually do. Not only can I not replace him but if I did then the new parrot would out live me and who would look after it then? Besides, I miss Chubby. Not the parrot" I asked my dad "Is there anything I can do to cheer you up?" He said "I'm not sad. I miss him sure but I just keep remembering how much fun he was to have with me. If you want to cheer me up... I'll have a cup of tea" I call my dad every Thursday morning just to make sure he is ok and so that he knows he is not alone.
Aw, what a sad story. Pets are family, they can't be replaced.
Load More Replies...I had a conversation about this with a person a few months ago. They wanted a parrot cause they were bored, they also lived with other people, who weren't going to be asked if they agree or not. Managed to talk them out of it, because every pet is a living being, who live years, not a toy for a few months.
Wow, great job, Falcon (appropriate user name, btw)! Congratulations. You saved a poor soul from a certain suffering
Load More Replies...I just read an article about how so many parrots, budgies and all assortment of birds are being given up in great numbers rapidly since the increase of work from home happened. That's just awfully sad. We took one in ourselves, she was a family pet for 7 years but apparently she is too chirpy and interupting zoom meetings so they gave her the boot! We brought her home and found her a partner and fortunately they adore each other, all the chirping makes our home feel very alive and it is our great honor to care for them.
Thank you. Budgies are such happy birdies and fun to have around. :)
Load More Replies...A few years ago I considered adopting a budgie because I thought having a bird around would brighten the place up. But guess what I did then? I did my damn homework. I'd never owned a budgie before so I read up on them and saw how much attention and special care they need to stay happy and healthy, and I thought "well, I don't think I'd have the time to do that properly". So I abandoned the idea and did not adopt a budgie. It's just common sense. If you're going to adopt a pet you're unfamiliar with, do your homework. I'm a rat owner and it drives me bonkers seeing how many people adopt rats and then don't feed or house them properly. And then half the time when the rat gets sick thanks to all that they just let it die because "rats are cheap; you can just get another one". Being small and short-lived doesn't mean your life doesn't matter. What's wrong with people? :(
Never keep them alone. Budgies needs company. We have 12 of them (8 are rescues) and they are allowed to fly around in the entire home. Yes, they can be destructive and can be loud. Especially when in a swarm. But these are lovely animals and they can bring a lot of joy into your life
So many budgies! I only have one that we raised from when it was a few weeks old and she treats us like we are her flock and she is my bestie🥰
Load More Replies...Broke me as well..I feel so bad sometimes when my cockatiel chirps a lot and I really want to get him a friend so he's not so lonely sometimes..
Load More Replies...Again, this is so heartbreaking and true. Budgies are the sweetest and happiest little souls. I had two when I was a child / teenager and I still miss them. They need a lot of attention and playtime and should never ever be kept alone. My Susi followed me everywhere and always wanted to share birdie kisses. Nicky just wanted to snuggle under my hair and sleep. They were the cutest little things. I had them for a long, long time and when Nicky died, it broke my heart to see how lonely Susi was. Though she always preferred me as her companion, she missed Nicky just badly. She went from a playful and happy bird to a very, very sad one. It almost broke my heart but I gave her to my grandma who had three budgies at that time. Susi never became the same but it got better. She's gone now for over 20 years but I still miss her and dream of her. If there is a life after death I hope I will meet all my little furry and feathered friends again.
When the time comes, we will meet up with our dear little departed friends at The Rainbow Bridge where they will be waiting for us...
Load More Replies...I'm not a bird person. They kinda freak me out. But this is still so damn heartbreaking. A similar thing happens with pot bellied pigs. They don't live as long as parrots, but they're also (technically) wild animals and deeply misunderstood. I just adopted a pair of them and I did so with the full knowledge that they could easily weigh over 100 lbs, are probably smarter than my dog (but still likely won't follow commands because their personality is closer to that of a cat), and there is a very real possibility that they will destroy my yard. That being said, they are also fascinating creatures with big personalities who never fail to make me laugh. Bottomline: do your research on ANY pet before deciding to bring one into your life. Look at both their good AND 'bad' qualities and be realistic. And above all, remember your potential new friend is a living being and not an accessory. Nobody deserves to live in a closet. 😢
I'm sorry, but when I saw your 'nobody deserves to live in a closet' part, I thought of Harry Potter and how gay I am.
Load More Replies...Pets are part of the family. Would people discard their children if they were noisy and impertinent? As I have always said, humans are not so enlightened that they can be stewards of the animal world. Rest in peace to all those animals that have suffered at the hands of humans.
This breaks my heart so much. We have 8 feather babies, from a budgie all the way to blue and gold macaws. Yes they're loud. Yes they can be messy if you don't stay on top of things, but they are the most amazing wonderful animals you'll ever own. My budgie (parakeet) runs the house, her name is sprite and she whistles and talks and is so loving. My bigger birds all talk and let me tell you there is no joy in the world like your feather baby saying hello to you when you walk in a room or "buh-bye" when you leave for work. When they snuggle you to go to sleep. When they do a happy dance when they see you and you take them out. Our babies only have a cage for when we're gone or bed time. They are amazing. So please if you can't handle noise (or live in an apartment) Please don't get a bird to just discard it later.
My friend has two parrots that keep each other company, they have the entire house to themselves and only go to their cage at night and when they need to go. Her back door leads to a large garden with a clear dome around it for the birds. Though this isn't anything like their natural habitat, it is not a dirty cramped cage, it is a reasonable healthy amount of space and a clean one too. There are 8 members of their family, all of them help take care of the birds. Grandma, grandpa, uncle, mom, step dad, two older step sisters and her. The birds names are Mango and Melon, they are siblings and were abused by their past owners (wings clipped, feathers pulled, etc). They had so many scars mentally and physically. Both had severe trust issues when first meeting their new owners, and even attempted to nip at their fingers to keep them away. They are on a road to recovery and have made so much progress, they learned that this new family was a read one and it makes me so happy to know that.
This is so very sad but such an important message. As a mum to a beautiful fid (feathered kid) I can attest that parrots are a lot of work, they are noisey and messy and need a flock to be a part of. They are not designed to live alone, locked up and closed off from the world. They are flock animals and need a loving caring family. Please don't get a bird if you cannot give it the life it deserves. I love my IRN like crazy and cannot imagine life without him in it. For all the "hard" times, the better times are so much more but he is a life commitment and I have sworn I will never let him down no matter what!
I once had a cockatiel, he was great, but had picked all his feathers off when I first met him. He'd been dumped on the guy I was working for, who also didnt care. So I took him home. Put him in my studio, where I spent the most time. Let him fly around during the day. Introduced him to good seeds, and fruits. Started eating up there so I could share with him. Within weeks he was fully feathered again, but only got a pinch of white millet as a treat each day. Instead of it being his entire diet when I got him. He even fell in love with the 2 cats I allowed in the studio when I was working. They never tried to get him. But he liked to sit on them and sing.
😭😭😭This makes me so sad and EXTREMELY grateful my budgie didn’t end up with someone like that. I love her🥰
This is so heartbreakingly sad. Budgies are treated like disposable pets. I love mine. I have them in groups because they love their friends. And I don't care if they "Sing the Song Of Their People" while I watch tv, it's their voice. Plus they fly free and have some fun. Most people don't realize that budgies in the pet stores are mass produced and have no human contact until they are handled to be sold. They are hard to train and MOST people do not know how. So sad.
Can my budgie be annoying as heck? Yeah, he can. But every day I get to see him is a great day, because he is also one of the funniest little dudes I've ever met. Sometimes yes he does get on my nerves, but I knew that when I got him he would be loud and there would be poop everywhere sometimes, and that's fine by me. Besides, every once in a while he talks back to the family and we can hear him saying "Hello Arthur" under his breath, since we always say hello to him when we come into the living room. He's even started to learn his "goodnight song" because we sing it to him every night before we go to sleep.
I have cute little bird called Tycho, now Cos it’s spring he keeps regurgitating everywhere but we still love the little grotty boy
Dang it jenny! Why are these so good. I keep clicking, but they always make me cry.
I like birds, but I am allergic to their dander (and they make a LOT of it!). I would very much like to have a little budgie fren (or two!) to hang out with me in my bedroom, but alas, I cannot. :( And second on the cavies/guinea pigs. They make the most adorable little "WHOOOOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOP" noises when they're happy. But they can get loud about it. My advice to people who are looking to get a pet is to look up videos of them online and listen to the noises they make. And listen to them for hours. If you can deal with the noise that long, you can deal with the pet making it.
Oh damnit why do I always read her comics. They always bring out the onion cutting ninjas.
I have 2 little budgies myself and I'll admit; this comic made me cry. I researched and waited for the right time, for 5 years before buying one. The thought of doing this to them or to any bird just hurts my soul.
I have always had budgies and they are very pretty and fun to play with, don’t get pets if you won’t take care of them.
I originally had 2 budgies before our family friend couldnt take care of their budgie so now we have 3 budgies. they are always singing and happy. i love them so so much! i spend time with them every day. It makes me so sad to see that people treat their pets like this. birds are social animals. I will (hopefully) never give my budgies away
My neighbor has cockatoo and that animal is so frustrated of sitting in it's cage all by itself for years it does nothing than tooting loud of hours in one go when he's not at home. And when he is home he's always tell it to shut up. :-(
..... yes, typical human being..... or more accurately, human beast.
Load More Replies...My budgies lived with me for years and years. 1 lived 8 years, 1 lived 13. Together they had 23 babies who all had loving homes. Daddy could talk, and loved to snuggle. Mom was not so friendly, had come from an outdoor aviary and never got to love people. But we all loved her. Chipper could make modem noises, said hey cutie, peek a boo, i love you, gimme a kiss... yeah, it took ages, but he was a fun little guy.
I have budgies. I was slightly discouraged when they didn’t talk or liked being pet like the internet birds at first, and then I realized. I was horribly wrong. Birds don’t need to talk. They’re cute. They’re sweet. They were still young. Now they live, happily chirping, making lots of mess as usual, and being the sweethearts. Please look after your birds. They just need time. ❤️
Well if you choose to own any pets, it's 100% your responsibility to do as many research as you possibly can. If you get it to torture it unintentionally, cause of ignorance, it's wrong. If you do so to torture it intentionally, it's sick. You simply can't get worse than that.
I name the bird in this comic whistler, In memory of his beautiful singing
This makes me so sad how people buy birds and then have to go them up or don't take good care of them as a bird owner this brakes my heart
Our budgie is with us for about a year now. I love hearing him chirp happily, cause I know that I'm doing things right. Yes, it's a responsibility. What people need to understand is that they have their own mind and will. You can't give a budgie orders like a dog, you can't have it do what you want the time you want it. He will do whatever he wants and if you try to force him, yes, he'll bite. That's his nature. Parrots consider the people they live with as equal. He considers himself equal to everyone else. So we try to do our best to make him happy and feel free to do whatever he wants. He's not the destroying type - he doesn't shred papers, he doesn't pick on things... He likes listening to music and hanging around with us. Parrots need company, don't leave them alone. They are highly sensitive and emotional. They can get depression. It's not easy for them to adapt to a new space. Give them time and love and be patient.
Most people do not know how to. Treat. My kind of pet period! Let alone one that is wild. They are treated as disposable trash, and abused horribly! And I mean horrendous! Cats, too! Sony get a dog, and never bring it inside, and never pet it, keep it chained up, or never even bathed unless it got rained on and that was the bath. Left to freeze or broil in the extreme heat and cold. That is inhuman behavior, period.
I don’t believe any animal should be caged. If your pet needs a cage then it isn ‘t a pet, it’s a prisioner.
Behind my house is a park where nearly a hundred parrots flock to enjoy the grains scattered by a noble gentleman. Birds belong to be on the trees and in the sky and not cages
I have a budgie 23 months old and he has brought great joy. I did not realise how clever they are. Mine does not talk but he understands what I say and he loves to chirp in time to music. I let him out of his cage every week to fly around and he gets back in when he is ready. He sometimes perches on me and I have taught him to give me a small bite that I call a kiss.
Actually budgies can give "kisses" you understand the difference between bite and kiss because it doesn't use force and you feel the tongue patting your skin. They just do it when they are in the mood for cuddling

Load More Replies...This comic hit me hard... I had a budgie named Sky, she passed away several years ago at the age of 7. I had to take her to the vet after her cloaca prolapsed and the anesthesia took her. I've always felt guilty about it, wondering if I could have done something different...I still miss her
I wish we just didn't get exotic or wild pets. I wish that trade just ended. But I don't see it happening.
I wish people would do their homework on owning pets. There are plenty of people who are great at caring for their exotic or wild pet, because they fully understand what they were getting into and have the means to care for the animal properly. In this day and age of information sharing, there is NO reason not to know exactly how to care for the animal you get and what behaviors to expect. People just need to be responsible. Why let a few bad people ruin it for all the good people?

in my entire life i have had 5 budgies. the first one i got when i was 10 was called nachos. i loved him and he loved me, but he died only after 3 months of having him. he got sick and i didn't know what to do. then i got three more. sun, moon, and sky. they were too much for my young self to take care of, so relocated them to a new home. from what i heard they are doing fine at that new home. now i only have one, her name is leafy. i want the best for her. she doesn't really like me right now but she's warming up (to be honest i think she likes my sister more.) but i'm glad that i'm still able to give my birds a good life
Diego is a dinosaur, what about your parents? And please get a companion for Leafy.

My mom had an entire aviary as a kid, and those birds lived happy lives. She gets mad at this one friend who buys exotic animals for the charm but doesn't do research. She has a red fox, prairie dogs, and even a descented skunk. The poor parrot she got was shoved in a corner with a blanket over his cage, treated like an annoying decoration :(
Hamsters, birds and all that-they still need care. Maybe the people who post their bird mimicking human speech on the YouTube would have told that little girl…it takes training. And patience. And they need proper care.
This is so sad to see. is see people go to the pet store they look at a budgie or a fish think it is pretty and buy it and not do its research as a bird owner it brakes my heart. But there is this petco that give there birds vegetable but I it think it is better to get a birds from a rescue
I'm trying to convince my dad to let us get a parrot. Despite how hard they are, they're really nice. My friend has a bird who plays with the dogs and dances.
My Grandma 'B' has a bird named Tweetie. Whenever a Tweetie dies, she gets a new one. All of them warm up to me quite fast, which I love. They are all so cute, and she told me she has had this tradition for many years.
I'm not crying, you're crying! *I'm lying, I'm bawling my eyes out and missing my mum's budgie right now*
Suze, stop crying, stop bawling your eyes, and learn what you, any decent person, can do to make lives of animals better: join a reputable animal protection and/or environmental organization, please.
Load More Replies...My mom said no birds as pets. She thought it was the cruelest thing to take the freest animal on earth and stick it in a cage. Some people even clip their wings.
Ray, especially "at this time" we really need to be reminded how cruel and apathetic we are toward animals, wild or domesticated. Do something for suffering animals - happy rescues don't just happen.

Mary, turn your anger, disappointment, and frustration to action to help abused and tortured animals.
