While Netflix has long had a ‘no password sharing’ policy, extremely high levels of password sharing exist between family and friends. But that doesn’t mean you share your Netflix login details with just anyone. Quite the contrary, it has become the ultimate sign of friendship, love, and trust among people.

But what if the person you’ve entrusted your password to has suddenly become slightly too comfortable with it? I know it’s been back on our minds constantly, but you don't necessarily expect someone close to you to start leeching instead of getting a Netflix streaming plan of their own. It turns out that some people do indeed trade their dignity for $8.99 they could instead pay for a basic subscription.

Below we collected some of the posts from people who experienced what it is like to regret giving away their Netflix login. Scroll down through some stories below and after you’re done, be sure to check out part 1 of the post.

“We generally advise that people should treat their passwords with the utmost care like they would their bank details or sensitive financial information,” Gediminas Brencius, the Product Owner at NordPass, told Bored Panda in an interview.

“However, there are times that password sharing is inevitable, for example, shared tools at work or if you share services with your loved ones,” he added. Therefore, Gediminas’ advice is to think of a couple of things before sharing your credentials. “First, make sure that sharing is absolutely inevitable and necessary. Second, make sure you trust the person. And third, share it securely, for example, via password manager.”

People aren't pissed off at socialism. People are pissed off at the thought of someone else contributing less than them but getting the same benefits. Unfortunately, these are also the same people who would have their lives improved if they realized they aren't all that.

“If available, always use two-factor authentication. When sharing a password with another person, you will have to also share the second-factor digits–in a way, making it a ‘single use’ share, since the digits will be different every time someone tries to log in. But still–share passwords only via password managers–this will help ensure there are no leaks,” Gediminas explained.

I share my Netflix with my family, and in exchange they share their Disney+ with me. They're constantly asking me for the password even though I haven't changed it in years. I don't know why they can't just write it down

my partner of 4 years broke up with me YESTERDAY and the first thing I did was delete my daughter and my profiles and logged out of his account. I don't need anything from him, and I definitely don't want a daily reminder when I want to watch something :/

There are a couple of risks associated with credential sharing. Gediminas explained that one of them is actual sharing itself. “If you’re sharing the password in an insecure way, for example, via message, email, or another channel in plain text, there’s always a risk of it being intercepted, or someone unauthorized seeing the password.”

Moreover, Gediminas argues that you really need to trust the person you’re sharing the credentials with. “Depending on the type of account, the risk could be massive. Anywhere from the person changing the password and locking you out of the account to actual theft.”

If you want to create a safe password for your online logins, there are a couple of rules that Gediminas shared. “The standard rule is that your password should be at least 12 characters long, contain a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.”

“However, equally important is the uniqueness of the password,” he said and added that “If you’re reusing the same one across multiple accounts, in case of a data leak, you risk jeopardizing all of them, instead of just one. Basically, I like to summarize it in one sentence–if you can remember your password, it is not safe enough.”

When it comes to the worst mistakes when creating a password, you may want to check this annual NordPass report which features the most commonly used passwords.

“Every year people use the same weak passwords and do not seem to learn their lesson. So I would say that using any password from this list would be a huge mistake, as well as using similar passwords,” Gediminas said and added that “Just because your name or your favorite sports team is not on this list, doesn’t mean it’s not being used frequently. Maybe it didn’t make it to the top 200 this year, but it might make it next time.”

There are times wherein the location is inaccurate but not to this extent. That's a whole other continent.

I got an email once saying my account had been logged into from Nigeria. I was about to leave for a weekend camping trip, so I figured I'd deal with it when I got back. By the time I got back, the person had changed my password, so I couldn't access my own Netflix account. Of course I called Netflix on the phone to get it sorted out right away. If the person in Nigeria had left the password alone, there's a good chance I would have procrastinated on fixing it, and they would have been able to keep watching it for a while.

What is it with people telling others how to spend their time, money and use their own accounts. Like if I pay for a plate of food, should I share it with others because I could and there's enough? My money, my entertainment, my account, my decision how i used it and how much and who can watch it. Cannot pay 7 dollars for Netflix, but probably pays for multiple take outs, coffee. I want my fair share, then you get my Netflix access for a portion of your food.

My Netflix situation is funny. My ex and our mutual friend (I consider those people very close friends while I'm convinced he (ex) only contacts them when he needs something now) have once come up with the "buy Netflix for us all and split payment between the two of them" idea. And since it was around my birthday my friend told me it's a gift and he doesn't expect me to pay, like ever - them two are sharing costs (he is paying for his family and my ex is paying for us). Funny enough my friend is listed as the owner, not the ex, and ex really doesn't have the power to cut me off, even if he wanted. And maybe he would want to delete me from the deal because now all logins are used (me ex friend, friends wife, their kids) and ex cannot create sub account for new missus :D
