Portraits Of Shame: Terrible Conditions Of Professional Sportsmen’s Training In Bulgaria

“Portraits of Shame” is a short personal project, which I photographed in the Rowing Base of Vidin, Northwestern Bulgaria, startled by the conditions, under which the sportsmen there are forced to train and accomplish their achievements despite them. Some of the most successful sportsmen of the city agreed to take part in it, champions, who have brought numerous titles in their respective disciplines for my country.

As a photographer, I hope to drive the public attention towards the problems, which are deeply rooted in my country and which drive major discontent with our government on a regular basis.

I am a firm believer in the sentence that art is not a mirror to reflect reality, but a hammer to shape it and I hope that if this project gains enough momentum and public attention, there would be a reaction from the people, who are able to make things better for them.

Dedicated to my Friend, who passed away on the evening I shot this series.

The photographer and author of this is a f*****g a*****e. Yes Bulgaria has a lot of problems and tons of work to be done to recover from the post communist hold it was under. But Bulgaria also has unbelievable beauty both in nature and architecture. There are a lot of training facilities that do not look this way. This report is a f*****g joke further pushing a twisted view of Bulgaria to the world. When you highlight the ugly people will assume this is our country and that's not true!!! There's places this bad in every part of the globe! So again f**k you for being another one of those " artists " who can't be create enough to think outside the box but rather photographed an obvious topic and gave your country a bad look.

Well I've been to Bulgaria and it was... mainly like that. Poverty, dirty... It has nothing to do with the people who are charming, but YES, Bulgaria IS the poorest country in Europe. People are not responsible for that. But why not facing the reality ? It's the best way to improve things !

But Bulgarians are very happy to be independent from Soviets. Why they just destroy all buildings that were built in Communist time and make new!

I lived in Bulgaria for 7 years and played semi-professional soccer for 3 of those years in Bulgaria's second largest city, Plovdiv. Although many things are improving, sadly the majority of sport facilities for both training and competitions are in very similar conditions as the one depicted above!

unfortunately it's quite the contrary, it's a working facility, showers and the training parts are used daily - including kids. the only part of the building, which is no longer used (because of the decay) is the rooms, which were used as a staying place for the guest athletes.
