“Spare His Life”: Woman Warns Roommate Not To Eat Her Food, Makes Him Learn The Hard Way
Interview With ExpertLiving with a roommate isn’t just about sharing a space—it’s about sharing everything from kitchen essentials to the occasional WiFi struggle. Sometimes, the unspoken rule of borrowing is harmless, like using a plate or a power drill. But when boundaries aren’t respected, things can get messy—literally.
One woman found herself in a frustrating situation with a roommate who constantly stole her food, despite repeated warnings. After weeks of missing meals, she decided enough was enough. Knowing he had a severe nut allergy, she came up with a plan to teach him a lesson. Now, the internet is divided—was she justified in her actions, or did she take it too far? Keep reading to see how this food feud unfolded!
Comment from Dr. Sarah Meehan O’Callaghan
This story is undeniably bizarre. While the roommate’s actions—stealing food repeatedly—are unjustifiable and seem almost pathological, the response, which inflicted grievous potential harm, feels more like an act of revenge than a mere deterrent. Revenge runs deep in the human psyche, and the more powerless we feel in a situation, the more tempting it becomes. Rage and revenge are closely intertwined.
According to Dr Bernard Golden, who wrote for Psychology Today, “A powerful driving force for revenge is the belief that acting out the desire for revenge will provide an emotional release, that it will help us feel better.” Notably, in this article, the person concerned does not ask her roommate to move out, which seems like a better solution than poisoning. – Dr. Sarah Meehan O’Callaghan

Meal planning is essential for individuals with specific dietary requirements

When it comes to roommates, there are both spoken and unspoken rules. Some roommates share more than just rent—they split groceries, household essentials, and even the occasional takeout order. Then there are those who keep everything separate, down to the last spoon. And while every arrangement is different, one thing should always be clear: boundaries matter.
Respecting these boundaries is especially important when it comes to food. People carefully plan their meals based on their dietary needs, schedules, and health goals. To get a better understanding of this, we spoke to Saloni Kukreja, a nutritionist based in Germany with over a decade of experience in meal planning and dietary management.
“I work with many clients who have specific dietary needs,” Saloni shared. “Some have restrictions due to allergies or health conditions, while others want to improve their nutrition, like increasing iron intake or balancing their macros. Meal planning is crucial for them.”
Many of her clients also lead busy lives and look for quick, easy meal options. “A lot of them don’t have time to cook every day, so they need meals that are healthy, filling, and easy to prepare,” she explained. “That’s why having a structured plan is so important—it ensures they meet their nutritional needs without the stress.”
One of the first things she advised was getting organized with groceries. “I always suggest making a detailed shopping list for the week,” she said. “That way, you know exactly what to buy, you don’t waste money on unnecessary items, and you can stick to your planned meals.”
Another key tip is meal prepping. “I recommend setting aside a day—usually on your day off—to prep meals in advance,” she noted. “This way, you don’t have to scramble for food during the week, and you can make sure each meal has the right nutrients.”
Beyond basic meal planning, Saloni also works with clients who struggle with eating disorders. “Food can be a complicated and emotional subject,” she shared. “For some, eating isn’t just about nutrition—it’s tied to deep-rooted anxieties. We need to approach it with patience and understanding.”
It’s always helpful to communicate your eating disorders with loved ones so they can provide the support you need on your journey
Image credits: freepik (not the actual photo)
She encourages taking small steps toward healthier habits. “If someone has an unhealthy relationship with food, I never push drastic changes,” she said. “Instead, we work on gradual progress, so they don’t feel overwhelmed.”
Support from loved ones also plays a crucial role. “When someone is trying to establish a better routine with food, having people around them who respect and support their choices makes a huge difference,” she emphasized. “It’s important to communicate your needs clearly and set firm boundaries.”
At the end of the day, Saloni finds immense pride in seeing her clients reach their goals. “It’s rewarding to see people build healthier relationships with food,” she said. “When someone tells me they feel better, have more energy, or finally enjoy eating without stress, it reminds me why I love what I do.”
In this particular case, the roommate should have been more mindful before stealing food—especially considering his allergy. What do you think? Have you ever dealt with a roommate who didn’t respect boundaries? Let us know!

Share on Facebookunpopular opinion, but, if you have an allergy, and you steal someone’s food, it’s 100% your fault if you have an allergic reaction, even if they put that stuff know you are allergic. Having a condition doesn’t mean everyone else has to adapt to you. You should know what your food has, and when you steal, you cannot know what ingredients it has.
I don’t understand all this plotting to try to find ways to get people to stop eating your food. It’s easy: Once he’s done it the third time, he’s evicted. (Three strikes and you’ré out.) If your roommate were stealing your belongings (TV, phone, PlayStation), he’d be out on his ear, so why do people keep cutting slack for stolen food? It’s the same thing! I cannot for the life of me understand how people put up with it! I’d toss his s**t onto the porch and then shove him out right behind it. None of this “Maybe I’ll try laxatives next? Or dog food? What about allergens?” NO. Solve the problem: Push the badly-raised 🫏🕳️ out the door! It’s not that hard, folks.

You are NTA. This reeks of entitlement. If you had this person SIGN a roommate agreement And send CLEAR messages AND catch him doing it, then he DESERVES EVERYTHING he gets. As far as legally liable - he STOLE YOUR FOOD (not knowing what was in it, once again telling him not to eat it). His Mom should have the snot smacked out of her for yelling and berating you. Maybe she needs to yell at her son for being STUPID enough for putting himself in that position and clearly ignoring you.

I absolutely would have said "Don't eat this. It will kill you, I am 100% serious." When you do something like that, you have to actually warn them properly about the dangers. Not only for their safety and your food's but for you too. It's also then not really on you if you did warn them sufficiently and they still did it.

You made it clear that he was not to eat it. You have the receipts. So legally speaking, it's not attempted murder or poisoning. However putting laxatives in food and leaving it out as a trap is legally considered poisoning. On the other hand, you came home and saw that he had eaten it and left without checking on him knowing he would be having an allergic reaction and that is where you could get yourself in trouble. At that point, you knew he could be dying in the other room and left anyway. That shows intent to do harm. At this point, let me quote Simon Whistler from The Casual Criminalist . . . Part 2 This doesn’t excuse the roommates behavior, but if their actions drive you to this decision then you should have started the eviction process long ago instead of letting it reach that point. I found it interesting to read the OPs updates and how they try to minimize their involvement and deflect on the “man child” but suffice to say, had things been different you would be wishing you made better decisions instead of potentially killing someone for some your food. Be smarter.
Regardless of their living arrangements and contractual agreements, if you know someone is eating your food and you intentionally add something you know could harm them you can go to jail. This is known as poisoning and applies to food allergens, laxatives, even spicy types of peppers. The OP mentioned knowing they were aware of the allergy, not cooking or using items in the house because of roommates said allergy, telling roommate not to eat their food, and intentionally buying said ingredient and using it because roommate was allergic and knowing the it could do something to them. The OP could be easily charged with attempted murder especially after coming home, knowing the roommate consumed their nut laced food and then leaving to the bar after acknowledging they would have originally stayed at home and watched Netflix. Had the roommate died the OP would be in jail waiting to be sent to prison and this would be a whole different story. OP needs to reevaluate their life choice.
You spent a lot of time and trouble trying to teach him a lesson. The easier way to deal with AHs like this is to simply kick them out, and get a new roommate. I'm assuming that you can't afford a small fridge with a lock on it, as you need a roommate to help with the rent. So - find someone else, and send the food thief back home to his mommy.
Which of them? The roommate for lying about OP and sending his mom after her. Or op for putting allergen in her own food he wasn't supposed to eat, which he also denied eating?
Load More Replies...100% YTA. Intentionally making someone sick - especially to cause an allergic reaction? YTA. Yes, he shouldn't eat anything where he doesn't know the ingredients. But you intended to cause an allergic reaction, not even knowing the severity of the allergy. YTA YTA YTA.
I'd have sued - for the hospital bills at least. While stealing food is a crime, it doesn't hold a candle to attempted murd3r. Just sayin'.
If I were in her shoes, I wouldn't agree to pay his hospital bill. You can argue that you read that women don't get enough protein in their diet, so you decided to add the almond powder as a way to increase your protein intake. You've already informed him to NOT eat the food, so he is responsible for whatever occurs after eating it anyway. I mean, anything could happen - you could have made chili and he could've got the runs because the hamburger meat unknowingly to you had e coli. Or one of the ingredients was expired and he might have gotten sick from that. And his mother is nuts (pun intended) for blaming this on you - clearly she didn't teach him that stealing is WRONG. If he was truly struggling financially & couldn't afford his own food, he could have asked his mommy for money or went to her house for dinner. The nerve of some people nowadays. By the way, I live with roommates and we don't have this problem - because we ask permission before eating other's food.
Pfft. F this guy and his weak-a*s “binge eating disorder” excuse for stealing from his roommate. OP needs to kick him out and get a new roomie who’s *not* an a*****e.
I think i'm going yta. she could easily have just falsely labeled all the containers, "contains nuts."
Nope, not at all. As OP says, he eats nuts in other food he steals so tough s**t. He's a thief with an eating disorder which he didn't disclose so it's 100% his own fault.
Load More Replies...100% YTA. You intentionally arranged to make someone sick. Without knowing the seriousness of the allergy, you could have seriously impacted his health, or killed him. Yes, if is that sensitive to an allergen, he shouldn't have eaten something where he didn't know the igredients. But intentionally making him sick, especially an allergic reaction? YTA YTA YTA.
If he had died, she might be writing from a jail cell for premeditated murder.
Another dipshit who thinks they know what they're doing when they actually have no fvcking clue. "I DIDN'T KNOW!!!" is not an excuse. A death penalty isn't an appropriate response to someone eating someone else's food, and that's what she gave him. BUT SHE DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS SERIOUS!!!! She is the a*****e.
Lol but the kids alive... The death penalty? For someone still breathing? You are ridiculous. I bet you smell like cheese too.

Nowhere in this does it say he has Prader Willi, it says he has a binge eating disorder. People with Prader Willi have other mild to moderate cognitive and physical disabilities as well, which would have been obvious to the roommate.

And it wouldn’t have made an ounce of difference if you had told him there was nuts in it or not the safest thing you can do is to kick him out tbh even locking the fridge won’t work they will just find away to open it in all honesty now you know bout this please talk to his mother and get her to get him help as nothing you do will work look it up it’s an awful thing to have Katie prices son Harvey has it before I read the update I was a yes your in the wrong but now nothing u did would have worked I hope you can get him some help and you some peace blessed be
Nowhere in this does it say he has Prader Willi, it says he has a binge eating disorder. People with Prader Willi have other mild to moderate cognitive and physical disabilities as well, which would have been obvious to the roommate.

Load More Replies...Hi Jennifer, have you finally learned your lesson not to fvcking steal other people's food?
Load More Replies...You being allergic doesn't make my perfectly normal food a poison that I can't use in my own food.
