Rio 2016 Olympic Venues Just 6 Months After The Olympics

Summer is over for Brazil’s ‘marvelous city’. In a series of eerie and depressing new photos released last week, the 2016 Summer Olympic venues in Rio de Janeiro are seen filthy and deserted just 6 months after the end of the games, including the legendary Maracana Stadium. In a city that hoped desperately to be lifted out of poverty and debt by making back the money they spent, these are the ruins of a shattered dream.

Rio 2016 was boiled in scandal before it had even began, including a Zika virus outbreak, reports of doping by Russian athletes, and the impeachment of president Dilma Rousseff due to corruption. The second largest city in Brazil is millions of dollars in debt with international creditors, and now also owes over 900 thousand dollars to a local energy company.

Murky pools, worn terrain, and vandalisation can be found all over the Olympic park. Seats have been torn from the once-iconic arena. The future of these shockingly neglected buildings remains uncertain, but they’re unlikely to be a high priority among Rio’s long list of coming challenges.

This, Beijin and Sotchi are very good examples why the olympic comitee need to review what qualifies a city for the Olympic games.. New installations should be forbiden and they should encourage investement in already existixing venues. There should be rules that will require cities and goverment to redistribute the goods and have a strong post-olympic plan for the use of the installations.. For example, Guiness World Record requires all food record attempts to have a plan to not waste teh food otherwise the record cannot be accepted.

New installations are required by the IOC with regards to safety standards. From the hosts perspective, these new installations are a good way to showcase prestige and architecture - it's not about sports but about showing off to the world for a few weeks

The only plan that works is a pre-Olympics plan - and that plan is "Do not host the Olympics." It never does anything positive for the host city. The Olympics talk about equality and peace between peoples, but promotes human rights abuse to meet its insane standards. Hypocrites to the highest degree. F**k the Olympics.

I thought the whole idea behind this was to use the venues afterwards for training and recreation? I know that the venues in Calgary have been used extensively for these purposes. I'm not sure about the one in Whistler. (Canadian here) Everyone in Vancouver was certainly glad for the new Sky-Train line. There were many who whined and complained it would never get used, but the first day of operation, it got so much use that they had to put in additional trains. They then sold the apartments from the Olympic Village as regular apartments after. For sure have to have a plan. But, yeah, this is depressing : / Some of those look like they've been abandoned for 10 years!

The IOC should really consider semi-permanent fixtures for the summer olympics and for the winter olympics. Is there really a need to rebuild half of the ventures every single edition? There are plenty of abandoned former sport complexes around the world, often used only once. They should just decide on a location on every continent and have different host countries provide for the cost every cycle. It shouldn't be too difficult to reuse the complexes for yearly sport competitions either and for the regional sport events. Of course deciding where to build these complexes and the prestige that comes with it, is one the IOC will have to discuss.

As a Brazilian I must say ... Here in BRASIL corruption speaks louder than ordinary citizens. Do not think it was "invested" money in these works because a lot of money went into the pocket of business builders and politicians in these unnecessary works of the World Cup and the Olympics. The country suffers and politicians such as rats devour our money every day. All these unnecessary and useless works were overpriced, suffered delays, many were made incomplete and all defects were hidden and made up. It is even shameful to say that "I am Brazilian" ... There is no way to have patriotism with so much corruption and unpunished crime here.

It's not the first time we've seen such examples and it won't be the last. All Olympic hosts should take a leaf out of London's book. Olympic and Commonwealth Games venues continue to be used on a daily basis. Its all down to correct management and planning.

I'm not seeing anything new, this is typical of Brazil, it has everything to be one of the biggest countries in the world, both in environmental wealth and huge economy, but loses everything for the coruption and criminals, if it were better managed, it will be an excellent country To live, and to live well

very little thought put into what the buildings could be used for afterwards, before building them. Sorta self inflicted, if anyone thinks these people are attempting to recover their losses, then explain the thousands of objects thrown into a pile to decay, instead of, say, making the building a rec center or donating all the chairs and electronics to schools/libraries/hospitals. Andd by the way, steel beams, asphalt, wood, etc... are *reusable* materials. All these refined resources; baking in the Brazilian Heat...

ATL, LA ,& Russia, Australia utilized Olympics facilities their appropriately . Proving a city or country , or continent when a strong pre-Profitable infrastructure set for the Olympics can be a all around positive event! May be the IOC should make a considered host cities introduce a post games financial & utilazation of facilities plan . If a considered host city cannot provide this to IOC, with financial plans = no games. Proving the host cites with no stable financial infrastructure fail .3 Examples LA- Rams stadium, ATL Georgia Tech used Olympics Village for dorms. Russia uses the Olympics Village apartments as low income housing. In court revitalization projects or property inbankruptcy legal plans of action must be deemed financially stable . If it is,not, it is not. NO action or project is allowed to legally occur. Brazil Clearly the photos prove , it would not have been allowed to host the games. That is how the IOC needs to require this for host cities .

This is not surprising at all. The country could barely afford the costs of building these venues for the games. They cannot afford to spend money to maintain it just so the rest of the world feels better about it. This is what happens when countries who can't afford to support their own people take on the massive expense of the Olympic Games.

Why does any country want to host the Olympics? The answer, of course, is so that they can shift middle-class taxpayer money to the government's corporate overlords. The competition should be to punish a country by forcing it to host the Olympics, rather than treating it as a prize.

This happens with pretty much EVERY olympics. Nothing new or extraordinary here. It's all about politics and particular people who DO make alot of money of of this. This endresult was already decided long before the buildings were even build. They never plan to maintain anything even before everything was build. Yes, it happens to every Olympic village. But, Rio is facing at the moment huge problems - the state is broke, they cannot pay their public servants, the police currently went on strike (or just planned? Maybe I am misinformed, it changes quickly), their crime rate is high. I see, that all this waste is a pitty, but I also understand if right now it is not their focus. (For me it seems though, that many of their problem is connected to these spendings. They just held an Olympics, but the state is dead broke? Well....)

They should have invested in housing for the poor people in Brazil instead of wasting all that money on this sports Olympics shite. just to let it rot away like this, so disgusting, there is no wonder the poor Brazilian people go out robbing every day and night to get enough to feed their families and get their drugs when their government wastes money like this and does not give a f**k about their own people..

very little thought put into what the buildings could be used for afterwards, before building them.

It's all build for politics, fame and money (Not for the town).

Well....)
