In the most traditional sense of the word, a job is essentially an exchange of your time and talent for whatever monetary resources a company is offering.
However, as time has passed, companies have started to innovate. One of the most common ways companies add value to their compensation for a job well done (or at least a job done equal or above a given standard). And that is perks and bonuses which often come in the form of non-monetary goods.
But then you have companies doing something you wouldn’t even call the bare minimum—more of a crime against humanity—for min-maxing their finances and banking on suckers to jump on the train to get dirty deeds done cheap all while the company puts a checkmark on added-value incentives in their corporate checklist and calls it a day as they count their money.

This “Gift” For Employee Appreciation
Employee Appreciation Gift
This was what our company gave everyone for employee appreciation week. A rock. I’ve been here 4 years and haven’t received a raise since 2021 (not for lack of tryin!). a rock.
I Left My Job Shortly After Receiving This Prize For My Good Work 😂😂😅
Why on gods green earth would you need to give 24 hrs notice for an extra 10 min break? like, really? Unless you're the person manually operating a life-support system by riding a bike?
Now, there's an important distinction between bonuses and perks.
Bonuses are compensation that is added to whatever the set hourly wage or salary is. The most common form of a bonus is cash, but it can also be non-monetary means—as long as it provides value to employees and the company.
Perks, while also creating value on top of the set wage or salary, are often smaller in nature and more often non monetary. It’s essentially anything that the company provides to be enjoyed or be used in a limited context. Sorry, you can’t take that Xbox home.
Employee Appreciation Scratch Off
You can get custom scratch offs made? I have ideas... Evil ideas...
Feeling The #appreciation My Employer Is Showing To Our Dwindling Overworked Nursing Staff 😊😍
Instead Of Getting A Raise This Slice Of Pizza Was Used As A Motivation At My Last Job
You gotta be kidding me. I'm sorry, but that sliver of pizza looks like left-over.
Bonuses come in many shapes and sizes. These can be financial boosts to your salary based on set milestone achievements or as an annual gift from the company for sticking with it through thick and thin.
Some specific examples of these are sign-on and referral bonuses for recruiting people, annual or milestone bonuses for achieving certain personal or company goals, extra vacation days, and opportunities to invest a part of your generated value as an employee into company stocks and shares.

Congratulations!
The Monopoly Money My Job Gave Me Instead Of A Raise In 2018
Perks, on the other hand, have the same ultimate goal as a means of incentivizing employees, yet often come in smaller packages that don’t necessarily have a monetary benefit attached to it. They can, but tend not to.
These can range from free snacks to birthday gifts to monthly lunches, learning and development budgets, company partner discounts, and—something many of us consider a standard in any industry—coffee.
Pizza Party, But Employees Will “Pitch In On The Cost”

This Banana My Boss Gave Me To Celebrate 1 Year Of Work
Benefits and rewards platform Perkbox outlines some of the best and most universal perks for companies to offer and points out several key aspects to focus on when creating a perks package.
Namely, [1] perks work best if they are appropriate to the employee base (while snacks are universal, cinema tickets or free alcohol might only target specific audiences), and [2] coordinate with your employees to know what benefits they’d value the most.
It helps to offer a benefits package where anyone can find something they can benefit from, but talking to them beforehand will do wonders.
Just A Little Employee Appreciation
Took One Of Those Employee Surveys At Work Today, And They Gave Me This As A Gift Bag. 3 Pieces Of Candy From 1972 And A Pen That Doesn't Even Work. Sure Feel Appreciated!
Are the candies from their children's left-over Halloween trick or treat? Granted, I like Cowtails when I was a kid, but still.
This Is The “Thank You” Our ER Got For The Killer Month We’ve Had. One Of The Worst Since Covid
Now, what not to do when it comes to perks is essentially everything you see here in this listicle.
But, to be more precise, no pet rocks, “Monopoly” money, extra breaks, bags of air, appreciation trophies, scratch-off tickets where you win nothing, rubber toys, the thinnest slice of pizza in the world (probably cut by the cheapest pizza cutter in the world), a piece of candy, thank you cards or letters, unrealistically deflated bonus systems, used LEGOs, a first aid kit with a children’s activity book, and water. The list goes on, but we’ll end on a positive note.
My "Reward" For Going Above And Beyond
Instead Of Raises, To Help With Financial Struggle This Is What Us Nhs Workers Got Handed Out Today
Boss Brought In Drumsticks For Employee Appreciation
That's the smallest chocolate covered boob on a cone I've ever seen.
Companies can try to wrap a perk in joyful wrapping paper and sell it as a gift, but it won’t change how employees will react to it. And there’s actually a list of things to avoid.
First and foremost, benefits can’t be generic. Nearly every company nowadays has kitchens with snacks, Xboxes and PlayStations, lounges, foosball tables and, again, coffee.
Just Got This Email From Our Employee Appreciation Committee
So, the employee will have to pay for their own Appreciation Treat Bag? WTH?

My Work Got Me A Set Of Assorted Legos In A Tin For My Work Anniversary…. They’re Used With Child Bite Marks And Stains
It goes double for benefits that are irrelevant. Benefits are supposed to solve a problem an employee has and can hence use them to their full extent. Like getting a discount for a beauty salon when you’re bald.
And it goes triple for everything else the company might be up to with benefits: trying to cover up a bad corporate culture, discouraging folks from actually using the benefits, and deliberately hiding benefits, but creating positive employee branding saying there are perks.
My Brother Works For At&t, This Is What He Was Given For Working Through The Pandemic…. A Silver Coin
A silver coin is actually worth money? Better than the rest of the s****y gifts here…
My Job Brought Us “Treats” For Employee Appreciation
Employee Appreciation, Nothing Like .40 Cent Noodles ❤️
Now, nothing is free and everything has strings attached in the corporate world. Benefits are no exception. But instead of creating this facade of a good-guy company at minimum cost, a benefit should be viewed as a financial contribution to boost motivation, increase workplace appeal, and encourage innovation, among other things. And that, alas, will cost money, time, and energy. But it costs more to cheap out now and “replace” it later.
What My Company Gave Us Instead Of Raises
A Dozen Donuts For A Staff Of About 200. I Feel So Appreciated
I Found Out Today That It's Employee Appreciation Week At My Work. Apparently We're Not Even Worth A Pizza Party Anymore
Today’s employees won’t be satisfied with a lackluster assortment of “gifts”. Benefits have to be well-rounded, covering areas of employee health, well-being, financial security as well as work-life balance. Staying competitive in the industry means actually investing into the right kinds of benefits that fit an employee base. And so if you have happy employees, you have a happy company.
It’s Employee Appreciation Week And This Is What My Girlfriend's Employer Gave Her. She’s A PA At A Community Health Center In The City 🤦🏽♂️

I still think mine is the worst. On retirement and after 20 years working there (actually 23 years but they couldn't count) I received a tie pin (who wears tie pins) that immediately destroyed my favourite silk tie. So my retirement + long service gift ended up costing Me $45.
These are frankly the opposite of employee appreciation. If I were to receive anything like this, I would assume that someone was taking the pįss, and tell them where they can stick it.
Some of these gifts would be okay as a surprise for a job well done throughout the year but as anniversary gifts, or employee appreciation week/day/month they are pretty sad
My boss gave us a bottle of Crown Royal and cash. Oh, and an unsigned card, because I don't think he understands the concept of signing thank you/holiday/greeting cards. (He's from a different culture. I don't fault him for it. It gives me a little giggle. He's a decent guy.)
At my mum's last hospital job, once covid restrictions had lifted, her employers offered ex employees who had (voluntarily) quit during the pandemic a bonus of $1500 if they returned. The workforce who had stuck around pointed out they were essentially being disadvantaged for their loyalty. Their bosses took it on board and ended up deciding existing employees also deserved something. They couldn't afford $1500 for everyone, but they came up with a really generous bonus of... a Kit-Kat bar. You could present to head office to pick it up and get your name crossed off (they couldn't even be stuffed sending somebody around to hand them out). Yay.......
Empty gestures like these should be left unmade... Better to give nothing.
I did a project of designing a custom banner for the wife of the company president. It was their daughters b-day or something. My thank you gift was a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card. :-) At a different job I spent a few days driving to another state to work on a custom live edge epoxy table with an ocean theme. Granted it was with their materials and on company time but I spent months developing the technique and had to drive an extra 2 hours every day. The table was for his vacation home... You want to know what they gave me as a thank you? nothing. I got to keep my job that was about it. cool cool cool...
That's a Jake Peralta from Brooklyn 99 "Cool, cool, cool...", right? 😉

I worked at a school furniture factory for a short time, about 25 years ago. Christmas rolls around and they put a big box full of frozen turkeys out in the corridor (where we drive our forklifts) for our Christmas Bonus. I mean, a 20 lb turkey is ok I guess, till you find out that the department heads got a $10K bonus. They couldn't even give us regular schmucks 1/2 a paycheck for a bonus? I left a couple weeks later. They were just crappy all around. It's no wonder they went out of business.
Tomorrow we have a team meeting. Our director has asked us all to send in baby/toddler pictures. We're going to have a guessing game of who is in the pictures. The person who gets the most correct gets a $100 gift card to Amazon. Why? Because it's fun.
I got a survey for a customer support agent I talked to for a big company. At the end of the survey it asked what would be the best reward for this employee? A gift card, an extra break, or a goldfish. I loved, as a customer, to be asked but a goldfish? No.
With you on live animals. Plus goldfish can be destructive if someone dumps them in the wild.

WOW. Beyond insulting. I remember working for a screen printing company and the owner announced that there would be a raise freeze. I was the bookkeeper. He made the announcement in the breakroom after ordering us pizza. I immediately spoke up and said, "Except for you, of course" knowing he had just given himself an extra $2500 per month. I didn't disclose the amount, but I wanted to make damn sure everyone knew WHY were weren't getting our annual increase. He was not pleased, and surprisingly I did not get fired.
A lot of these shows that emplyoers do not appreciate workers at all.

"I'd like to return this, please." no other words. Why? Because I did not ask for this, expect this, want this, care to accept this, nor expect this socially unexpected moment. Like, WTF, 10 minutes ago I was doing my job, well. You literally burst my social bubble by being MEME to me. Quit. Go. My day could have been ordinary, and you popped in with a "quirky" pun, STOP. I actually had to say those words to a superior.
My employer does not shy away on company perks, this is something that is mentioned in any review of the company from current and prior employees. The employee appreciate day happens every year, all Full time employees can go to Catalina Island which the company pays for, the feed you and give you cash for the day. However those that dont want to go still have to work. But they also do Family Beach day and rent out an entire area, food trucks for Halloween, company gatherings at local breweries. We probably have the best Christmas parties ever, its like our prom, with open bar, prizes, etc. Then every year with the company you get $100, after so many years you get watches, and other great gifts.
if i'm ever a boss on April fools i'm going to give people a card that people will think is a bonus but is like a cheesy message. but on the back there's going to be an April fools sign with a bonus on the back
My government employer offered a free box lunch in appreciation. They ran out and had to tell the rest of us not to come. Then they did it again. (And ran out again.) Meanwhile, chief of staff appreciated the physicians (the people who least needed it) with a free lunch. SMH
Last year my director & the 2 supervisors gave us (25 people in office - including 3 neurologists/psychiatrists) cheap, plain plastic Dollar Store tumblers with lids & straws. Inside was a small strip of plain white paper with a motivational quote, and 3 pieces of candy. This was placed on the conference room table, and no announcement was made. They did this after we came back from a 3 day Christmas holiday.
My F500 company gave out .5-1% raises this year with record profits and 8.5% inflation where I live. They sponsor several major sports teams in every league, including F1 (at least $1million each), but don't pay their employees increases consistent with inflation. My days of skipped lunch breaks and staying an extra hour a few times/week are over. I was voluntold to take a "promotion" with a ton more responsibility and had to fight tooth and nail just to get a pay increase consistent with inflation. I love my job, but we're getting burned out and are tired of getting passed over.
