Restaurant Posts A Sign Explaining Why They Had To Close, And Now Everyone Wants To Eat There

For many Americans, working non-stop with little to no vacation is just a fact of life. One restaurant in Bakersfield, California, however, is breaking that rigid mold with a heartwarming policy that has now gone viral.

A Reddit user posted a photo yesterday of a sign taped to the door of Chef’s Choice Noodle Bar. The Thai restaurant was closed for 2 weeks, which some businesses might consider a death sentence. The hand-typed note, however, also revealed the reason for the establishment’s temporary closure, and people on the Internet are actually calling it a brilliant career move, especially in regards to head chef Preeda Piamfa.

Scroll Down to read the touching letter, find out how people are reacting to it, and add your own view at the end.

This note was recently found taped to their door, and was later posted on Reddit

“Our head chef is from Thailand and every year, we send him back to visit his family. Prior to coming to work at Chef’s Choice Noodle Bar, he had not seen his family for 15 years, but when he joined The Noodle Bar Family, we wanted him to have the opportunity to see his family on a more regular basis – so, we close the restaurant for two weeks every fall, in order for him to visit his family and recharge himself. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to having you visit us when he is back and refreshed on October 4th!

Judging by how the Internet reacted to the policy, we’d say it’s a surprisingly smart career move

Being European, this whole thing is hard to understand. We typically have 20, rather 25 days of fully paid vacation plus 5-15 bank holidays per year. There is no doubt that taking time off work is greatly increasing productivity and is in the end even in the employers interest – even if you recognise employees as mere "human ressources". In this very case, however, I wonder if they do not have a deputy. What would this restaurant do if this man gets ill? Or what if his cooking skills get him hired at another restaurant?

You did not even see what are the conditions of maternity leave in US...

Hans, it is one of those things for us in the US. For example with my job I get paid time off. Others in my family do not. So when I get vacation, I typically just sit at home or take them to work. If they paid the entire staff to take 2 weeks off then that would be a great company. Otherwise I wonder if most of the staff go hungry for 2 weeks waiting for the chef to return. This wouldn't be unlikely. This is however in California and they actually have quite a few laws to protect the employee. So maybe they do. Anyone know?

Ouch I got down voted. I didn't mean to be that negative. Sorry I didn't contribute something of value to the conversation this time around.

It's sweet, but everyone loses pay these 2 weeks. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a backup chef those weeks?

Yes, it would. But the point is that this company cared enough. We probably don't know the rest of the story.
