I Rescued A Husky And Later He Saved Me From An Abusive Relationship
I found Kyro through an ad on Craigslist. His Mother had abandoned Kyro and his 9 siblings. The owner sent out a plea online for assistance in raising the puppies. I gladly volunteered and helped to bottle feed, raise and find the puppies homes. Kyro ended up coming home with me because I couldn’t resist his chunky puppy belly!
When I adopted Kyro I was trapped in an abusive relationship, in which I had lost all hope of escaping. Kyro became my excuse to go on adventures and escape the situation. Ultimately, I left my ex due to him beginning to target Kyro with his rage. Kyro was and is my world – I couldn’t bare to see anything happen to him. After several months of us being out of the situation and adventuring around – I found a deep passion for photography. Capturing our travels together became my inspiration and gave me the bravery to find my happiness and strength once again. A peace settled in my soul and I found our daily adventures to be a healing process that started to repair me inside and out.
The nickname Goldilocks and the Wolf was given to us by my Mother. With my long blonde hair and Kyro’s Agouti coloring – the name just stuck. It became my Instagram name and the name of my photography business. Through the lens of my camera I tried to capture the ‘Fairy-tale’ moments we were seeing in our journeys together. Fairy-tales certainly are better when you have a Knight in shining armor. Or, in my case, a blue-eyed hero covered in fur. Together we have learned to stop and enjoy even the most simple of moments. And we both certainly appreciate the moments that absolutely take your breath away. I have caught Kyro so many times just sitting and watching the world around him. With Kyro by my side I’ve learned to brave and try things I would have never considered before. For example, waking up at 3AM to hike a mountain just to watch the sun crest over the mountains.
Where would I be had Kyro not come into my life? I honestly can’t answer that question. I just count my blessings every day that he ended up with me. Kyro’s happiness and my happiness have become reflections of one another. Focusing on photography has really opened my eyes to the world around me. Colors, sights and places look so much more vibrant and full of life. The wonder around me has absorbed me into a constant state of Wanderlust. Kyro raised a shroud from my life. He tore back all of my fears and really saw right into my soul. He showed me the person I couldn’t see inside myself. The person he saw and loved. He has helped me to become the person I’ve always wanted to be – inside of the shadow of myself I was before. It’s hard to look into Kyro’s eyes and not see an old soul there. An understanding of things that went greater than myself. His eyes are like looking into the eyes of someone who has lived a hundred life times.
Now I am working on sharing my story with the world. It has not be easy to relive the memories of the past abuse, but my goal is to help inspire others that are in (or were in) situations like mine. To help others see that there is a positive after all of the negative and that one day… You will find yourself again. I found my four-legged Knight – who knows where yours is waiting.

That’s us – Goldilocks and the Wolf
Our story begins 3 years ago…
I adopted a husky named Kyro but he didn’t know he’ll be the one who would end up rescuing me
I found him through an ad on Craigslist. His Mother had abandoned Kyro and his 9 siblings
Kyro ended up coming home with me because I couldn’t resist his chunky puppy belly!
At that time I was trapped in an abusive relationship, in which I had lost all hope of escaping
Kyro became my excuse to go on adventures and escape the situation
His blue eyes were a motivation to seek happiness that I couldn’t ignore
I left my ex due to him beginning to target Kyro with his rage. Kyro was and is my world – I couldn’t bare to see anything happen to him
After several months of us being out of the situation and adventuring around – I found a deep passion for photography
Capturing our travels together became my inspiration and gave me the bravery to find my happiness and strength once again
A peace settled in my soul and I found our daily adventures to be a healing process that started to repair me inside and out
Through the lens of my camera I tried to capture the ‘Fairy-tale’ moments we were seeing in our journeys together
Fairy-tales certainly are better when you have a Knight in shining armor. Or, in my case, a blue-eyed hero covered in fur
Together we have learned to stop and enjoy even the most simple moments

Where would I be had Kyro not come into my life? I honestly can’t answer that question
Kyro raised a shroud from my life. He tore back all of my fears and really saw right into my soul
He showed me the person I couldn’t see inside myself. The person he saw and loved
He has helped me to become the person I’ve always wanted to be – inside of the shadow of myself I was before

To help others see that there is a positive after all of the negative and that one day…

Share on FacebookThis is seriously beautiful and brought tears to my eyes. I also have a husky, Ella, who was with me when I left an abusive marriage, but also helped me so much through my depression afterwards. I'm fairly certain that the only reason I got out of bed most mornings for the first year afterwards was because of her. It's both very touching and very sad to see another person who has similar experiences as mine. I hope you and your puppy have many more happy adventures!
Thank you for sharing your story! I'm sorry you went through that Dakota. I am glad you are in a better place now. It's amazing what animals do for us. Their ability to heal us is remarkable.
Load More Replies...I love this.... so much applied to me as well. I had a mini-Yorkie who also was the reason I had to get out of my situation... I finally got out but my lil' Napoleon passed away from a birth defect (I'll never buy from a breeder again; only rescues now) but I feel like he came into my life to help get out a pit and left when his job was done. I still miss him terribly but I have since rescued two other dogs who are my little minions. :)
Thank you so much for your comments everyone! This journey has been difficult. Reliving what occurred in the past isn't easy.. however, hearing other victims sharing their stories has really inspired me to continue sharing. Abuse impacts all genders, races and ages. It doesn't have a preference and happens on a daily basis. It can come in the form of emotional, or physical abuse. And sometimes you don't even realize it was happening until you're out of the situation. Abuse isn't easy to leave. It isolates you and shoves you into a shell surrounded by shame, pain and fear. I am hoping bringing light to this topic will make it easier for people to discuss in the feature. The hardest thing with domestic abuse and abuse of any sort is that it's really hard to talk about and difficult for people who haven't experienced it to understand. To all those out there that have experienced it, or are currently experiencing it... know you aren't alone and know you deserve better.
Your passion for Kyro is incandescent, the images that you create, magical. Thank you Goldilocks and the Wolf!
Goldilocks and the Wolf. BRILLIANT! I especially love the photo fo you two sitting in the meadow with your backs to the camera, showing your hair. Interesting how it took the concern for the safety of your dog to help you save yourself. It can be hard for us to see ourselves as being in imminent danger, but when we see a vulnerable loved one in the danger, then we take action. Bravo.
Inspiring words! I love this sentence: "He showed me the person I couldnโt see inside myself. The person he saw and loved"... And, pictures are awesome! =)
Your beautiful friend's eyes indeed have the look of a wise old soul. How wonderful that you found each other and yourself. I wish you a wonderful life. X
I love your story, dogs can heal your soul for sure they have mine over and over. By the way, your dog is a Malamute, not a husky, absolutely beautiful animal
Your photos are magical. What an incredible tale you have to tell, inspired by a beautiful dog. Thank you for sharing. My first dog, Sonny, saved me from a crazed stranger who tried to harm me, in the woods. He was my hero..
Seriously beautiful pics!! I totally understand Kyro 'rescuing' you. I got my 'wolf' after my near 10 year relationship ended. Lola is a massive pain in the a**e, but by god she distracted me from the pain I was going through and now 3 years later I'm out the otherside, still walking the mountains with my therapy girl, very happy it's just me and my girl x
one dog helped me during my emotionally exhausting relationship, now another one teaches me to be happy. yes, you are right - they love us so much, we start to believe we are worth it! my dog was abandoned. it took me a lot of time to gain her trust. now she welcomes me when i come home, i love it! nobody has ever done that.
So wonderful. Glad you are in a better place. Thank you for sharing your story and your beautiful photos.
Beautiful! I've encountered similar tales of the healing power of a companion pet: A young alcoholic considered suicide because of his drinking, but his cat stopped him. He reasoned that his cat wouldn't survive without him. He told me, "My cat got me to stop drinking." He gave his cat the name "Magic". I chatted one day with a woman who had a lovely blue-eyed husky. She had quit drugs, but her husband has no intention of getting off drugs and spent a lot of time away from her. Having a loving companion prompted her to think that she might be happier on her own.
Kyro is so beautiful! Those light blue eyes, and the contrast with his dark fur make him look like some sort of undercover angel. And from your story he was indeed like an angle to you :)
A story of faith, courage and redemption. I wonder, who rescued who? My answer is "both". I love the way the author/photographer found her way from darkness into light, the beauty of nature and the loving partnership she & her husky created.
What an inspiring, spiritually uplifting (am I being redundant here?) story. Dogs give us so much love and unconditional devotion.
You two are beautiful! Bless you and wishing all the best to the both of you! <3
Even though you left to keep Kyro safe, I hope you know how you too are worth keeping safe. BOTH you and Kyro are beautiful!!!
That is one very handsome beast!! Those are all fantastic photos also. They really capture the rssence of your story.
Dogs are so loving and always by anyone's side. That's why dogs are my favorite animals, they and have helped the lives of many. #Dogzrule!

Beautifully told. You have found your soul mate of the animal kingdom! I'm so grateful that you found the strength to leave when Kayro started to get hurt. God bless you.
I love this story <3 and Kyro is so handsome! He has the most beautiful eyes :)
This story is beautiful. It's amazing how the things we least expect to change our lives utterly flip our worlds upside down for the better. I'm excited for when I have a dog and have adventures of my own with my pet. This story is definitely inspiring and heart warming to say the least.
What a beautiful relationship and a gorgeous companion you have. Thank you for sharing!
Had the same and was rescued by a big white husky. Vilho died three years ago at the age of twelve. He got cancer. I still miss him daily.
Beautiful, amazing story. I love the photos too, talk about a beautiful dog with a beautiful owner
I love your story. I found the love of my life thanks to my husky and at that time, I was in an abusive relationship too. Saltje (my husky) and I were walking when we saw a handsome man with a baby husky. When our eyes met, we knew that we were meant for each other. I walked away from that toxic relationship to the one I have now and we are so happy! Dogs are heavenly gifts that show us the simplicity of life with love and to enjoy every moment.
I have no words. My dog saved my brother from his death by squealing at two am and finally waking us to realize he had stopped breathing. Yo
Thank you for sharing not only your pain, but also your beauty and strength.
Amazing story. Amazing Women and being Brave ! Thank the higher powers for Our Animals
Amazing photo's/photography Amanda you have some serious talent right there! Also enjoyed reading the story.
