The biggest killers are typically watering too often, pot too big, or poorly-draining soil. I recommend immediately repotting a new cactus or succulent into cactus soil in an unpainted terra cotta pot (they evaporate water well) and only water once the soil is absolutely bone dry. When you DO water, however, DRENCH them. I water until the tray fills up with water, let them sit for 15 minutes or so, and then dump the tray. These plants are designed for long periods of drought followed by torrential rains. Some succulents want to be watered more often than others, but if you typically kill them err on the side of watering less often.

Disclaimer guys, my cactus looks NOTHING like these beauties, BP just demanded that I post a photo when making this thread (which would also be the photo used as the banner for the thread) so I found this one. Sorry for the confusion Luv you all

I know now lol, my husband brought it home in late summer last year and tbh we had no idea what it was, it was just a cool looking vine. It died in winter and I thought it was gone. Then early in spring it was back to life and bloomed. It was so cool it actually made me start a garden and now I have tomatoes and peppers. I'm actually good at gardening now and love it!!!! So yeah I thought it was dead....

Where do you get banana seeds?

    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I actually got these ones from Baker's Creek in the US, they have pink banana seeds. There are also lots of options on Etsy. Bananas are hard to start, though--the mechanism that makes them germinate isn't well-understood. I planted these in April in sterilized (microwaved) soil in a sealed plastic bag. One sprouted after a month or so and I transplanted it, but no more grew. Recently I moved them to a window that gets a lot of direct sun, and three more have sprouted. I planted them more than 5 months ago!

I heard you can't grow banannas from seed?

    Community Member

Just really finicky to germinate. I don't think grocery store bananas have seeds either, have to get a different variety. The one that sprouted months ago looks more like a banana.

The really hot day/cool night thing seems to have been more effective than the heat mat I tried previously. They're in their plastic bags in a south-facing bay window that gets baked all day in the sun.

    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I had it for about maybe 9 months in the first picture, in that time it grew about 1/3 of what it was but then when the spring and summer came and I found the right spot with the perfect light and learned how much water it needs it just really bloomed and started sprouting babies all over the place! She's a reverse spider plant as well, white in the middle with green on the edges, I have a smaller one the colour is the other way round.

Got it for free from a centerpiece at an event. Was crowded in with a few other plants some of witch died. The store probably put some stuff to make it bloom and it was roots were too big. Cut off the flowers and gave it a bigger pot and it grew so much! I wonder if it will flower again.
