3 Foxes Decided To Live In My Backyard During Winter

Last winter, 3 red foxes decided to take up residence in my back yard, and I didn’t mind at all. It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had with wildlife.

I live on beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada, in Charlottetown. Our summer months are renowned worldwide, and people come from all over to celebrate great local food and beaches as far as the eye can see. Our winters, on the other hand, are brutal. Last year we set a new record for snowfall – we accumulated just under 550 centimeters (just over 215 inches) of snow.

Urban foxes are common in Charlottetown, and luckily for me, I had three to photograph all winter long. They would show up in the morning, jump on top of the garden sheds in my backyard and sleep on them. All day. When the sun started to set, they would leave again, off to hunt in the night. As a way to charge them rent, I would go outside with them for about an hour every other day and take their pictures.

What a privilege you had to share moments with these fantastic animals, here in France they're considered as a "nuisance" literally :( how can such intelligent fellow beings can be considered as such...so thank you for sharing your uplifting great pictures! Long life to foxes :) and don't stop taking pictures Jon :) Bonne journée! Emily

We had a family of foxes living behind us along a railroad spur. The young kits tended to be impetuous like kids do. My wife would be out walking with our dog along the road. One day one of the kits came running through the pasture, jumped over the tall grass at the verge of the road without looking, and landed right in front of the walkers. The dog sat down and waited. The kit froze, slowly turned its head to look. It started barking at the walkers like, "hey, I'm running here!". Then mom fox barked and off they went. They didn't come back this year, and I hope they weren't poisoned. They sure were fun to watch.

Charge them rent? That's hilarious. They live outside. YOU should be paying THEM! I'm curious since they're "urban" foxes why you didn't feed them. I'm not sure what foxes eat besides tiny animals like rats, but it seems like almost everyone would love some nuts or something else to tide them over until they could find food in the 215 inches of snow.

Such beautiful creatures. And wonderful pictures. It's a privilege to have been their photographer, and even more so, that the photographer has shared these startlingly exquisite pictures.
