Person Asks Why People Don’t Like Their ‘Word Of God’, Gets To Learn They’re Being Brainwashed
Not every country has the freedom of absolute free speech – but in countries where they do, one of the messages often spread is that of religion. People can convene, go door to door or spread flyers in an attempt to inform others about their religious beliefs and even persuade them into joining – however, the word of God is not always appreciated.
A lot of people get annoyed or even downright angry when they are disturbed by these religious groups recruiters and have no issue making it known to them. Looking for another way to get people to listen, someone on Quora asked the internet how they could get their religious message through to people without upsetting them – and got the perfect response.

Interesting. I've never thought of it that way. I've always thought it was really presumptuous for people to claim they were speaking for God. That includes priests, preachers, rabbis, inmans, whatever. It implies a superiority that I just can't accept.

Bored panda really needs to fix the arrow system on here, Cat Lady has put forward her first hand experience of doing this sort of work and her comment has been downvoted into oblivion, I'm an atheist and I don't believe that Jesus was a real man much less a man god but people should be able to put forward different viewpoints without their comments disappearing, maybe you guys could add a report button instead for people that leave troll comments.

Social in-grouping and out-grouping... A *lot* of Christian identity depends on being persecuted and an outsider. That can be hard to achieve in a majority Christian society... so they invent (safe) ways of doing it. It also has the effect of repeating a lie so often that you internalize/justify it.

@earringnut - I'm not sure you can 'marry' a holiday. Seems to me that to marry, the other party must be a person. A holiday is just a day on the calendar, it can't sign the license, it can't answer the required questions. Of course, I do not know what your 'religious' beliefs are, so....

Also the message of jehovas witnesses (and many other religions) is very offensive. They say that I have found the one true god, the one true way. By definition they are saying that they are right and you are wrong. These god botherers come to your house to tell you that you are wrong unless you believe as they do and god is coming any minute and he will smite the unrighteous (you) and or send you to eternal torture unless you believe in their cult. They come to your house to tell you you are wrong, and they threaten you (even though the threat is fictional). They worship a god that kills and tortures. They are fine with him killing and torturing human beings.

Terd, I often wonder if/how do I explain this to my young children. I try to teach them to respect everyone and their beliefs, furthermore I try to tech them to be good and kind without getting anything in return. What can I say (as a non-religious person) when some person they don't know is telling them bad things will happen if they don't believe in their god?

Some time ago some Jehova's witnissed called at my door. "We're here to bring you the light of Jesus Christ." I answered: "I've got solar panels." and closed the door. Haven't seen them again yet. Perhaps I'm on a black list.

My sister, a born-again Christian, was worried that my Dad was going to go to hell. He never proclaimed to be a non-believer. He spent his life helping his family, keeping his elderly neighbors in their houses, donating blood for decades, loaning tools, helping neighbors and family fixes houses and cars, mentoring neglected children, loaning money to people, taking care of my Mom for years was she was sick without complaint. He wasn't a saint, but is honestly one of the most generous and ethical people I've ever known. Didn't have a mean bone in his body. And she was worried he was going to go to hell because she thought he wasn't a believer for some reason. I don't care if her beliefs are the factually correct beliefs or not. I reject them either way. If my Dad was destined for hell, I will join him there and fight side-by-side with him against the unjust system.

A very interesting perspective. It makes me want to be more approachable and friendly when targeted by one of these "recruiters", while still politely and firmly declining their invitation. I usually just wave and smile as I shut the door in their face.

When I was young and nice, I used to be kind to these sects too. But, see, their alleged 5 min. really mean 1+ hour, they literally won't let you go until you make it straight and clear and get a stricter tone. They end up wasting your precious time unexpectedly, time you might had wanted to reserve for studying, doing homework, or just a bit of peacefulness and "me-time". The day I bounced into a group that took a "friendly threatening" approach, I decided, "there's no way I'll keep doing this to myself!" From then on, I just act busy and don't let them into my personal space.

The worse case of Christian Proselytization was when I went to a dentist a few years ago, and in the waiting room some lady I didn't know asked me if I knew "Jeeeesussss". I said that I wasn't interested in hearing about it. 20 minutes later she finally shut up when she was called back. She was rude, nasty, volatile, and harassing. The staff there were christian too, so .... not a good trip to the dentist that day.

My uncle was reading the Bible very actively and knew it almost by heart. Once the JW came, he invited them over for tea and sat an hour and a half destroying each and single one of their arguments based on the Bible. They went away and never came back. He always claimed later that this was the biggest test to his wits and knowledge and faith and one of the biggest accomplishments that he stood strong and won.

It has always seemed to me that organized religion is mostly brainwashing of one type or another. It usually starts with young children. I chose to be the person that a loving and caring god would expect. I really don't think he cares too much about what you eat or what you do on Sunday morning. Just be a good person!!!!

Can you wear ear plugs? They drive me nuts - make my ears itch - but they do cut out a lot of noise. I also have CCTV so I can see who is at the door. Another thing I've found helpful is a doorbell that you can switch off as they usually don't knock on the door as well.

Well not all religions prosthelytize, in fact some like Judaism prohibit it (according to all denominations, though Orthodox is more strongly against it), and some Christian denominations like 7th day adventists also dont, and Hindu's don't and many more. This applied to really the mostly missionizing groups and in those cases not even all of them as some of them use the soft-sell approach with services, goods, etc.

Brainwashing. Not really. Depends on the individuals involved really. I've found that most people talk about and want to share what they love. Whether it's their God, science, political leader, family, pets, job etc. I always listen respectfully, and depending on the situation and subject, I may disagree, also respectfully. We're all being brainwashed, one way or another, media, news, schools, etc. all teach us what they want us to know or what we want to hear. If you don't want to hear it, just say "No thanks" and walk away, or shut the door. For the one who doesn't want to be rejected, take a look at yourself and the strength of your belief. If rejection is causing you to not want to talk about whatever you believe in, no matter what it is, maybe your belief isn't as strong as you want it to be. Whether it's your religion or anything else

I was chatting with a Jehovah's Witness guy on my front porch. He said he knew his group was the true Christianity because they were the only ones going door to door like that one time that Jesus sent a bunch of missionaries out. I told him the Mormons do that, and he said that didn't count. Then I told him Baptists used to do it, but they found that it was ineffective and counter productive in modern America.

In Holland we celebrate St Nicolaas (yes, the one with black Pete) and children believe easily. It's on tv with its own news, it is a big topic at school (singing songs, making drawings) and he comes by to visit, they sing at home and put their shoe near the heating with a little gift for him and/or his horse and Pete. And of course, in the morning the children find a little present or candy for their effort. Thing is, the whole country is involved for a few weeks and the children truly love Sinterklaas and his zwarte Pieten, adore them completely. And then, at one point as they grow older, get to hear the whole story about the charade. My son asked me after been told by older friends so I came clean. He was TOTALLY shocked and depressed for a week. I now use this example of how difficult it is for someone to leave a religion in which your whole family takes part and which was probably lovingly installed in your being.

You are probably right about being indoctrinated at a very young age, before you have a chance to think for yourself. I was schooled by catholic nuns for 8 years. There was absolutely no love involved. Perhaps that is why their god lessons didn't take on me. But, they gave me two great gifts: a superior education and freedom from all religion and other supernatural delusions.

After having a surgery on my spine a JW came Knocking and asked me to join a seminar to save people before X date. I told the lady I just had a surgery a couple days prior and it wouldn't be a good idea for me to go, she then told me, well you can stand and listen or stay a sinner and go to hell, then I replied, God loves me wether I'm at your church getting brain washed or at my house in pain laying on my bed. I then slammed the door on her face. My grandma has a black sign with golden bold letters that read, "JW/Mormons not welcome here, dog will be released".

This is 100% accurate. I was able to break the chains of this programming after 33 years in the Evangelical scheme. I can't express just how liberating it is once you figure out the system... it's brainwashing, total and complete mind control. Church and cult leaders should be investigated and prosecuted for crimes against humanity. What they do to millions around the globe is truly scarring. I was lucky to have been able to break free, but there are millions who simply don't see it. Much like the Dunning Kruger Effect, the knowledge and clarity you need to break free from the brainwashing, is the knowledge and clarity that is required to figure out that you've been brainwashed.

I generally don't have a problem with people sharing their beliefs with me as long as I don't feel like they are belittling what I believe in or are forcing me to believe in what they do. That is the moment that I will "reject" them as politely as I can, at least at first. It's all about how you deliver your ideas and beliefs, but if this is the way that organizations are teaching their people to present their beliefs in order to keep people with them, then that is a s****y way to treat the people who are following you.

I disagree that it's the same with political ideologies. Politics is and should be in the public sphere. When our president decides to start a war it's us who will have to fight and die. When our leaders vote on healthcare, it's us that will be affected. If they cut back on ss benefits, it's us that will be affected. If they decide we can't get married to who we love, that's an unfairness that we have to live with. Politics affect us in our everyday lives. Religion is different, that's why we have separation of church and state. Religion is a hobby, politics is life and death.

My mom turned JW when I was born and my sister was 14. She was deprogrammed but they failed to program her into their views. I was drug along door to door at the age of 4, just to see door after door slammed. Then in school, everyone participates in Pledge of Allegiance and as a witness, not allowed, but i mouthed the words anyway. No Xmas Halloween Turkey Day Birthdays. By now my older sis is married to a non witness and is always showering me with holiday stuff I believe i never believed and ran away when i was 16. I was in a place of standing up for what I felt was right but was it was so wrong as a JW. Ptsd plus cult kid. Took me years of visiting many but not joining any church. Never was at ease inside of most of them.

I feel you. My mom converted when I was in 4th grade. Everything about it felt wrong, but I was literally dragged there several nights a week and door to door on weekends until I was 17 when I out my foot down and flat refused. My brother was very young and thankfully my parents divorced so he wasn't forced to go all the time. I'm still deprogramming because the whole thing left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'm not comfortable inside any church and constantly questioning the pastor's interpretation of the Bible. I was so annoyed when my husband became a Christian (a real one) because I thought I was going to go through it all over again.

If their real purpose were to inform people of the goodness of God, they wouldn’t continuously harass people who tell them at the door that they love Christ and belong to a church they’re happy with.

I don't listen to preachers because I went to a catholic school my whole life and church every Sunday. I have listened to many homilies, gospel passages, scriptures and psalms and none of them have any logic. I always thought the church was sexist and didn't include people for who they were. When they change something it's too late. When I confront adults and religious education teachers about the illogical side of the church they would rebut with illogical answers which only added to my disbelief in the bible which then lead to me being an atheist

Jehovah's Witnesses believe (from the bible) that God will only allow 144,000 people into "Paradise" which, is quite problematic, considering that they alone, number over eight million worldwide! Perfect excuse to inform them bluntly (should they come a-knocking) that they're already over-subscribed.

There is actually no mention of a place called hell in the Bible. That was something invented by an ancient author who wrote an epic poem called "Dante's Inferno." It's all about a place called hell and the different gates of it depending on the sins committed. There are actually many things in Christianity that are commonly believed that are not once mentioned in the Bible; just myths. I choose to not be religious, but I've learned and read enough about religious teachings.

Actually, despite the myth that the Bible doesn't talk of "hell", hell is mentioned by the name "hell" in the Bible, and also under other names such as "the realm of the dead" (2 Peter 2:4, Acts 2:27). There may still be things which aren't strictly mentioned in the Bible that some denominations of Christianity or Catholicism follow, though.

I am not highly educated and don't always understand what people are saying, I do know the we are supposed to spread the good word. It doesn't say we are not to share the Gospel. My faith doesn't allow me to sell Christianity. We tell people about Jesus and the decision is up to them. Christians aren't about forcing.The apostle Paul never met Jesus but if you read his letters then you would understand more about Jesus and the love He has for everyone..We dont speak for God but He asks us to inform everyone of the good news..

If a person is converted by someone talking them round, is that genuine belief? Maybe, but I’m pretty sure most people don’t genuinely believe - they just want to, which is not the same thing. I was Christian, but after many years I asked myself, “Do I genuinely believe, 100%, that this is true?” Answer: no. I would never have come to those conclusions of my own accord! From that point, I realised that the only certainty about death is that we die - and the chances that every member of a doctrinal belief system actually truthfully believes every single teaching within - and who is not actually self-brainwashed - is tiny. If someone is a member of a religion through a need for community, or fear, or brainwashing, then I don’t think it’s valid. It actually takes courage to admit you have no idea what happens when we die. I feel that unless you have come to a religion’s beliefs yourself, you are faking it until you ‘believe’. I feel the same about atheists. It’s OK to admit we don’t know!

I agree it is annoying. I myself do not like it when Christians try to get me to join religion, so I get it. But if you ask a girl/guy out that does not associate with your friends, you love them, but they reject you. You then go by your friends and they comfort you. Is not the same thing? Just to clarify.

Jesus commanded his true followers to preach the good news of the Kingdom to everyone. So, we are simply following his command. The methods we use are clearly outlined in the Scriptures. I kind of want to put a big disclaimer out there that the title 'Christian' has many denominations, which I find weird, but whatever, and it has been thrown around by many people and has been used as a reason for many things. Please be open minded in that when someone says they do something in the name of Christianity, to not lump all Christian people together. Not all Christians believe in all the exact same details, they can be very very dofft sometimes. Just remember, sometimes you have to chock bad behaviour up to just a bad person who's interpreted something differently than others.

The religious groups that are trying to spread their word should advertise do events and activities for the general public in the communities. This way the others will get to meet the members and maybe be more willing to attend a service.

The author forgot to mention another standard professional brainwashing technique, which is protein starvation. Religions call it “fasting” and while it is promoted as a purely devotional act, it has the effect of weakening that mental muscle we know as “will power” so that resistance is dampened to what would otherwise be recognized or questioned as complete nonsense. Religious or not, churched or not, we all construct our own private, bespoke mythologies to get through life. Personally, I have never found that game of “my spiritual b******t can beat up your spiritual b******t” to produce results of any consequence.

I was brought up in the Christian church. I remember sitting in my pew feeling deep pity for all the people I thought were going to burn in hell. When I look back on it now, all I can think is, "Wow, what brainwashing!"

Me thinks many in the comment section are bitching about a nonexistent problem. I am 50 years old, and in my 30 years of adult life I have had a JW knock on my door 2 times I can think of, let's say 3 just in case. Did they harass me? Did they proclaim I was going to hell? Were they rude? Nope, none of these things. I did not feel being rude or hostile to them was warranted. I smiled, said, 'thank you but I was not interested' and closed the door. They didn't hover or begin to knock again that day or any day after. So how is it, that so many of you are being badgered and pestered and having to endure so much anguish as religion is repeatedly crammed down your throat? Proselytizing happens in an endless number of ways. Drink Pepsi, not Coke...Wear Juicy couture, Drive Ford only..Go Vegan. Nobody is belly aching about that s**t to such a degree. The woman asked a very simple question, that brainwashing answer is only an opinion. I think the answer is cause most people are rude jerks.

Doug is sharing his thoughts and beliefs about religion. Is that so different to what the first guy is doing? We don't know anything about either of them. Either of them could be brain washed, or could be trying to make us all believe something. I'd rather listen to both of them and think for myself, than dismiss one and automatically believe the other.

Noah--who, granted, many are going to think is a fake character from the bible, a supposedly phony book of fantasies and myths--preached to the world around him because he was trying to get some to join him on a life-saving ark through a catastrophic flood. No one, other than his wife, 3 sons, and 3 daughters-in-law, joined him. They died; he lived. That's all. No head games--just trying to save some people's lives. Something extremely huge is coming, people. Ironically, everything starts to collapse when governments worldwide ban religion. Ok, now I'll go back to my congregation and lick my wounds when you all attack this message. "Oh, poor me. Maybe the flock will make me feel better...."

Human beings are tribal in terms of nature. Simply because humans, as the normal ones, will also crave to be accepted. The basis of this is love. So grouping together is the aim of sharing one's beliefs? The whole answer basically is a shifting of goal post that does nothing to address why people are angry. Cliques and groups are everywhere...agnostics, atheists are also one group...so does that mean they also brainwash others? Isn't writing a book about The God Delusion, same as proslytizing? Are the readers brain washed? The answer is just saying something about nothing. It is basically what we as human beings are naturally. So back to the question....why people are so angry when confronted with the Ultimate Sacrifice?

Ultimate sacrifice? It was one rough weekend. If god is all-knowing, and has a divine plan, then he saw it coming from infinity away in the past. And after his rough weekend, did he go up to heaven? A sacrifice for what? If this is all of god's plan, and he is the one that created everything, then it is all his responsibility and fault. Interesting. I've never thought of it that way. I've always thought it was really presumptuous for people to claim they were speaking for God. That includes priests, preachers, rabbis, inmans, whatever. It implies a superiority that I just can't accept.

Social in-grouping and out-grouping... A *lot* of Christian identity depends on being persecuted and an outsider. That can be hard to achieve in a majority Christian society... so they invent (safe) ways of doing it. It also has the effect of repeating a lie so often that you internalize/justify it.

Also the message of jehovas witnesses (and many other religions) is very offensive. They say that I have found the one true god, the one true way. By definition they are saying that they are right and you are wrong. These god botherers come to your house to tell you that you are wrong unless you believe as they do and god is coming any minute and he will smite the unrighteous (you) and or send you to eternal torture unless you believe in their cult. They come to your house to tell you you are wrong, and they threaten you (even though the threat is fictional). They worship a god that kills and tortures. They are fine with him killing and torturing human beings.

My sister, a born-again Christian, was worried that my Dad was going to go to hell. He never proclaimed to be a non-believer. He spent his life helping his family, keeping his elderly neighbors in their houses, donating blood for decades, loaning tools, helping neighbors and family fixes houses and cars, mentoring neglected children, loaning money to people, taking care of my Mom for years was she was sick without complaint. He wasn't a saint, but is honestly one of the most generous and ethical people I've ever known. Didn't have a mean bone in his body. And she was worried he was going to go to hell because she thought he wasn't a believer for some reason. I don't care if her beliefs are the factually correct beliefs or not. I reject them either way. If my Dad was destined for hell, I will join him there and fight side-by-side with him against the unjust system.

When I was young and nice, I used to be kind to these sects too. But, see, their alleged 5 min. really mean 1+ hour, they literally won't let you go until you make it straight and clear and get a stricter tone. They end up wasting your precious time unexpectedly, time you might had wanted to reserve for studying, doing homework, or just a bit of peacefulness and "me-time". The day I bounced into a group that took a "friendly threatening" approach, I decided, "there's no way I'll keep doing this to myself!" From then on, I just act busy and don't let them into my personal space.

The worse case of Christian Proselytization was when I went to a dentist a few years ago, and in the waiting room some lady I didn't know asked me if I knew "Jeeeesussss". I said that I wasn't interested in hearing about it. 20 minutes later she finally shut up when she was called back. She was rude, nasty, volatile, and harassing. The staff there were christian too, so .... not a good trip to the dentist that day.

My uncle was reading the Bible very actively and knew it almost by heart. Once the JW came, he invited them over for tea and sat an hour and a half destroying each and single one of their arguments based on the Bible. They went away and never came back. He always claimed later that this was the biggest test to his wits and knowledge and faith and one of the biggest accomplishments that he stood strong and won.

It has always seemed to me that organized religion is mostly brainwashing of one type or another. It usually starts with young children. I chose to be the person that a loving and caring god would expect. I really don't think he cares too much about what you eat or what you do on Sunday morning. Just be a good person!!!!

Can you wear ear plugs? They drive me nuts - make my ears itch - but they do cut out a lot of noise. I also have CCTV so I can see who is at the door. Another thing I've found helpful is a doorbell that you can switch off as they usually don't knock on the door as well.

Well not all religions prosthelytize, in fact some like Judaism prohibit it (according to all denominations, though Orthodox is more strongly against it), and some Christian denominations like 7th day adventists also dont, and Hindu's don't and many more. This applied to really the mostly missionizing groups and in those cases not even all of them as some of them use the soft-sell approach with services, goods, etc.

Brainwashing. Not really. Depends on the individuals involved really. I've found that most people talk about and want to share what they love. Whether it's their God, science, political leader, family, pets, job etc. I always listen respectfully, and depending on the situation and subject, I may disagree, also respectfully. We're all being brainwashed, one way or another, media, news, schools, etc. all teach us what they want us to know or what we want to hear. If you don't want to hear it, just say "No thanks" and walk away, or shut the door. For the one who doesn't want to be rejected, take a look at yourself and the strength of your belief. If rejection is causing you to not want to talk about whatever you believe in, no matter what it is, maybe your belief isn't as strong as you want it to be. Whether it's your religion or anything else

He said he knew his group was the true Christianity because they were the only ones going door to door like that one time that Jesus sent a bunch of missionaries out. I told him the Mormons do that, and he said that didn't count. Then I told him Baptists used to do it, but they found that it was ineffective and counter productive in modern America.

In Holland we celebrate St Nicolaas (yes, the one with black Pete) and children believe easily. It's on tv with its own news, it is a big topic at school (singing songs, making drawings) and he comes by to visit, they sing at home and put their shoe near the heating with a little gift for him and/or his horse and Pete. And of course, in the morning the children find a little present or candy for their effort. Thing is, the whole country is involved for a few weeks and the children truly love Sinterklaas and his zwarte Pieten, adore them completely. And then, at one point as they grow older, get to hear the whole story about the charade. My son asked me after been told by older friends so I came clean. He was TOTALLY shocked and depressed for a week. I now use this example of how difficult it is for someone to leave a religion in which your whole family takes part and which was probably lovingly installed in your being.

There was absolutely no love involved. Perhaps that is why their god lessons didn't take on me. After having a surgery on my spine a JW came Knocking and asked me to join a seminar to save people before X date. I told the lady I just had a surgery a couple days prior and it wouldn't be a good idea for me to go, she then told me, well you can stand and listen or stay a sinner and go to hell, then I replied, God loves me wether I'm at your church getting brain washed or at my house in pain laying on my bed. I then slammed the door on her face. My grandma has a black sign with golden bold letters that read, "JW/Mormons not welcome here, dog will be released".

This is 100% accurate. I was able to break the chains of this programming after 33 years in the Evangelical scheme. I can't express just how liberating it is once you figure out the system... it's brainwashing, total and complete mind control. Church and cult leaders should be investigated and prosecuted for crimes against humanity. What they do to millions around the globe is truly scarring. I was lucky to have been able to break free, but there are millions who simply don't see it. Much like the Dunning Kruger Effect, the knowledge and clarity you need to break free from the brainwashing, is the knowledge and clarity that is required to figure out that you've been brainwashed.

I generally don't have a problem with people sharing their beliefs with me as long as I don't feel like they are belittling what I believe in or are forcing me to believe in what they do. That is the moment that I will "reject" them as politely as I can, at least at first. It's all about how you deliver your ideas and beliefs, but if this is the way that organizations are teaching their people to present their beliefs in order to keep people with them, then that is a s****y way to treat the people who are following you.

I disagree that it's the same with political ideologies. Politics is and should be in the public sphere. When our president decides to start a war it's us who will have to fight and die. When our leaders vote on healthcare, it's us that will be affected. If they cut back on ss benefits, it's us that will be affected. If they decide we can't get married to who we love, that's an unfairness that we have to live with. Politics affect us in our everyday lives. Religion is different, that's why we have separation of church and state. Religion is a hobby, politics is life and death.

My mom turned JW when I was born and my sister was 14. She was deprogrammed but they failed to program her into their views. I was drug along door to door at the age of 4, just to see door after door slammed. Then in school, everyone participates in Pledge of Allegiance and as a witness, not allowed, but i mouthed the words anyway. No Xmas Halloween Turkey Day Birthdays. By now my older sis is married to a non witness and is always showering me with holiday stuff I believe i never believed and ran away when i was 16. I was in a place of standing up for what I felt was right but was it was so wrong as a JW. Ptsd plus cult kid. Took me years of visiting many but not joining any church. Never was at ease inside of most of them.

I feel you. My mom converted when I was in 4th grade. Everything about it felt wrong, but I was literally dragged there several nights a week and door to door on weekends until I was 17 when I out my foot down and flat refused. My brother was very young and thankfully my parents divorced so he wasn't forced to go all the time. I'm still deprogramming because the whole thing left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'm not comfortable inside any church and constantly questioning the pastor's interpretation of the Bible. I was so annoyed when my husband became a Christian (a real one) because I thought I was going to go through it all over again.

I don't listen to preachers because I went to a catholic school my whole life and church every Sunday. I have listened to many homilies, gospel passages, scriptures and psalms and none of them have any logic. I always thought the church was sexist and didn't include people for who they were. When they change something it's too late. When I confront adults and religious education teachers about the illogical side of the church they would rebut with illogical answers which only added to my disbelief in the bible which then lead to me being an atheist

There is actually no mention of a place called hell in the Bible. That was something invented by an ancient author who wrote an epic poem called "Dante's Inferno." It's all about a place called hell and the different gates of it depending on the sins committed. There are actually many things in Christianity that are commonly believed that are not once mentioned in the Bible; just myths. I choose to not be religious, but I've learned and read enough about religious teachings.

Actually, despite the myth that the Bible doesn't talk of "hell", hell is mentioned by the name "hell" in the Bible, and also under other names such as "the realm of the dead" (2 Peter 2:4, Acts 2:27). There may still be things which aren't strictly mentioned in the Bible that some denominations of Christianity or Catholicism follow, though.

I am not highly educated and don't always understand what people are saying, I do know the we are supposed to spread the good word. It doesn't say we are not to share the Gospel. My faith doesn't allow me to sell Christianity. We tell people about Jesus and the decision is up to them. Christians aren't about forcing.The apostle Paul never met Jesus but if you read his letters then you would understand more about Jesus and the love He has for everyone..We dont speak for God but He asks us to inform everyone of the good news..

If a person is converted by someone talking them round, is that genuine belief? Maybe, but I’m pretty sure most people don’t genuinely believe - they just want to, which is not the same thing. I was Christian, but after many years I asked myself, “Do I genuinely believe, 100%, that this is true?” Answer: no. I would never have come to those conclusions of my own accord! From that point, I realised that the only certainty about death is that we die - and the chances that every member of a doctrinal belief system actually truthfully believes every single teaching within - and who is not actually self-brainwashed - is tiny. If someone is a member of a religion through a need for community, or fear, or brainwashing, then I don’t think it’s valid. It actually takes courage to admit you have no idea what happens when we die. I feel that unless you have come to a religion’s beliefs yourself, you are faking it until you ‘believe’. I feel the same about atheists. It’s OK to admit we don’t know!

I kind of want to put a big disclaimer out there that the title 'Christian' has many denominations, which I find weird, but whatever, and it has been thrown around by many people and has been used as a reason for many things. Please be open minded in that when someone says they do something in the name of Christianity, to not lump all Christian people together. Not all Christians believe in all the exact same details, they can be very very dofft sometimes. Just remember, sometimes you have to chock bad behaviour up to just a bad person who's interpreted something differently than others.

The author forgot to mention another standard professional brainwashing technique, which is protein starvation. Religions call it “fasting” and while it is promoted as a purely devotional act, it has the effect of weakening that mental muscle we know as “will power” so that resistance is dampened to what would otherwise be recognized or questioned as complete nonsense. Religious or not, churched or not, we all construct our own private, bespoke mythologies to get through life. Personally, I have never found that game of “my spiritual b******t can beat up your spiritual b******t” to produce results of any consequence.

Why don't you post all 200 billion questions that have been asked on Quora? The lack of originality on this site is sickening. Bored Panda used to be half decent. That was 4+ years ago. Quora sucks nowadays as well.

Me thinks many in the comment section are bitching about a nonexistent problem. I am 50 years old, and in my 30 years of adult life I have had a JW knock on my door 2 times I can think of, let's say 3 just in case. Did they harass me? Did they proclaim I was going to hell? Were they rude? Nope, none of these things. I did not feel being rude or hostile to them was warranted. I smiled, said, 'thank you but I was not interested' and closed the door. They didn't hover or begin to knock again that day or any day after. So how is it, that so many of you are being badgered and pestered and having to endure so much anguish as religion is repeatedly crammed down your throat? Proselytizing happens in an endless number of ways. Drink Pepsi, not Coke...Wear Juicy couture, Drive Ford only..Go Vegan. Nobody is belly aching about that s**t to such a degree. The woman asked a very simple question, that brainwashing answer is only an opinion. I think the answer is cause most people are rude jerks.

Doug is sharing his thoughts and beliefs about religion. Is that so different to what the first guy is doing? We don't know anything about either of them. Either of them could be brain washed, or could be trying to make us all believe something. I'd rather listen to both of them and think for myself, than dismiss one and automatically believe the other.

Doug Robertson may have studied at a university in Maine, but his explanation is just hogwash. Instead of taking issue with all the commentary, let me just say this. Noah--who, granted, many are going to think is a fake character from the bible, a supposedly phony book of fantasies and myths--preached to the world around him because he was trying to get some to join him on a life-saving ark through a catastrophic flood. No one, other than his wife, 3 sons, and 3 daughters-in-law, joined him. They died; he lived. That's all. No head games--just trying to save some people's lives. Something extremely huge is coming, people. Ironically, everything starts to collapse when governments worldwide ban religion. Ok, now I'll go back to my congregation and lick my wounds when you all attack this message. "Oh, poor me. Maybe the flock will make me feel better...."

Human beings are tribal in terms of nature. Simply because humans, as the normal ones, will also crave to be accepted. The basis of this is love. So grouping together is the aim of sharing one's beliefs? The whole answer basically is a shifting of goal post that does nothing to address why people are angry. Cliques and groups are everywhere...agnostics, atheists are also one group...so does that mean they also brainwash others? Isn't writing a book about The God Delusion, same as proslytizing? Are the readers brain washed? The answer is just saying something about nothing. It is basically what we as human beings are naturally. So back to the question....why people are so angry when confronted with the Ultimate Sacrifice?

Ultimate sacrifice? It was one rough weekend. If god is all-knowing, and has a divine plan, then he saw it coming from infinity away in the past. And after his rough weekend, did he go up to heaven? A sacrifice for what? If this is all of god's plan, and he is the one that created everything, then it is all his responsibility and fault. Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. Some humans make much bigger sacrifices for the people and the world. Look up Marie Curie. Look up Jonas Salk.

When you proselytize, you are telling other people that you know better than they do. That's pretty insulting. Do you think it's ok to go around telling people how to raise their children (lacking abuse) or doing their jobs? But it's ok to tell them how to believe and that your way is better? How would you feel if a Pagan came to you & tried to talk you out of being a Christian?
