A proper, fair, easily accessible healthcare system is a lifesaver. Depending on where you live, medical care can be free, paid via taxes, incredibly cheap, or mind-bogglingly expensive. In some parts of the world, moms who give birth have the added stress of huge bills. Elsewhere, the only worry they have is whether the baby will be happy and healthy.

Redditor u/drthwau, who moved to France from the United States, asked the AITA community for their verdict on a sensitive family situation. The author shared how her sister, who stayed in the US, demanded that she help her with her extremely large hospital bills. You see, the sister thought it was “unfair” that she’d paid nothing (except via mandatory health insurance) to give birth in France herself. Read on for the full story and people’s comments. Bored Panda reached out to the author for further comment.

Childbirth is a beautiful thing. However, it can be extremely expensive in some countries compared to others. This makes some people very salty

Around a quarter of all healthcare spending in the United States ends up being wasted

In France, paying for health insurance is mandatory for all citizens, whether or not they’re actually employed. In other words, your taxes pay for your healthcare, which means you don’t have to pay mind-melting prices out-of-pocket later on.

It’s fairly cliche to point out that the United States has one of the most inefficient and expensive healthcare systems among the developed nations of the world, but it’s true. Sure, the country has lots of pros… but its healthcare is sorely lacking.

The Peter G. Peterson Foundation notes that the US has one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the entire world. In 2021 alone, US healthcare spending amounted to $4.3 trillion, or around $12,900 per American.

“By comparison, the average cost of healthcare per person in other wealthy countries is less than one-half of that. What’s more, 34 percent of the nation’s healthcare spending is funded by the federal government—placing a strain on the federal budget and contributing to the nation’s growing national debt,” the Foundation explains.

One major reason why healthcare costs are so huge in the US comes down to one simple word: waste. Around a quarter of all healthcare spending in the country is considered wasteful.

One 2019 study found that wasteful spending in the healthcare system ranged between $760 billion to $935 billion per year. The main sources of waste include administrative waste, inefficient spending on clinical care, and operational waste. To put it bluntly, for every dollar Americans spend on health-related things, a quarter of that is squandered.

How much you pay for having a baby in the US depends on a lot of different factors, including your insurance

Investopedia reports that based on the data collected by the Peterson-Kaiser Family Foundation Health System Tracker, the average cost of having a baby in the US comes to around $18,865.

This sum includes a wide range of different costs, including pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Even if you have health insurance, you can expect to pay nearly $3,000 for everything out of your own pocket.

Of course, everyone’s situation can be different. Unfortunately, if there are any complications or pre-existing health conditions, you can expect to pay more. Furthermore, how large your bill will be also depends on how you give birth.

For example, in 2020, it cost around $11,453 to pay for vaginal delivery. However, the average cost of a cesarean section (aka a c-section) was $17,103. However, these sums don’t include pregnancy or postpartum care costs.

Meanwhile, Forbes points out that in 2022, the average cost of childbirth in the US was $18,865 (or $2,854 out-of-pocket for health insurance plan members, on average). The cost of vaginal delivery was $14,768 ($2,655 out-of-pocket) while c-sections cost $26,280 ($3,214 out-of-pocket).

Raising kids is very expensive as a whole, but most parents would probably tell you it’s worth the trouble

If you decide to hire a doula (someone who gives guidance and support during labor), lactation specialists, and therapists who specialize in postpartum depression, you might have to shell out even more money.

These services may not be covered by most health insurance providers. So, it’s very important that you get to grips with the finer details of your insurance, so you know what you’re getting.

Naturally, the spending doesn’t stop there. Next, you have to raise your child, keep a roof over their heads, put food on the table, pay for the bills, buy them toys, take care of their education, get them clothes, etc.

Investopedia notes that you can expect to spend $310,605 to raise your child until they turn 18 years old. That comes out to around $17,000 per year.

Yes, exactly. They've been brainwashed by Republicans to think that socialism is the same thing as communism. It's ridiculous. For the love of God, what do Americans think socialism is? Free handouts? Nope. You pay your taxes and from that taxes are funded a healthcare system that's affordable for everyone. Things aren't 'free' at all, it's just that the costs are spread proportionally so that everyone is assured of a minimum level of existence because that's a priority. Just call her bluff and let her go NC: she doesn't get to insult you and then ask you for money and act miffed because she FAFO'd.

Even if OP did send her sister some money, sister would find a way to turn it against OP. Sister has been simmering with resentment for a long time. She thinks that OPs lifestyle choices are some sort of implicit criticism of her own life (as if OP would move to another country just to make a point about her sister's choices). Let sister stem in her own discontent. There was always going to be something to precipitate a crisis. OP can't really do anything until sister realizes that she is coming from a place of jealousy and insecurity.

I think that in the usa socialism = communism and the fearmongering around it is basically creating the new oligarch noblemen class... the 1%... Good luck with that guys. I recommend guillotines they worked VERY WELL in the past. Now all we need to do is a couple of protests and the vague notion of guillotines in the past is enough.

Getting pregnant was the choice of both sisters from what I can assume. As an adult they're responsible for all that follows, including financial. The sis who now lives in France isn't responsible for the other's financial obligation. Especially if they have received insults to their life's decisions. It's not just the insults towards the country, but this is a reflection of one's life choice (especially a harmless move). Another note, the US healthcare financial system is indeed rubbish.

Peeps call it Socialism like it's horrific (although it's not perfect, & many in the EU/UK haven't actually got Socialist Govts), btw, just because some Countries pay taxes for their healthcare so it's free at the point of use. She was right to refuse. The sister should have kept her loud, denigrating opinions to herself, IMO, then maybe she'd have got help from the OP). Maybe peeps in places that destroy them financially via healthcare rip-offs, need to take a leaf out of the citizens of France & revolt until changes are made (and maybe not confuse Socialism with Communism, as well. USA version makes me think of the rich/private Corps, who don't give a s**t about minors/Pensioners/Temp/Permanent Have-Nots).

Health is free but not great at the moment..it's bogged down with bureaucracy and over protected workers with to many rights and not enough obligations. It tends to work better for big things.

OP didn't handle this perfectly, but could have left out some of the snark comments, but overall she is right. Demanding that she should pay just because she can, or that because it isn't "fair" that she get it for free because she lives in another country is bogus argument. There are ups and downs to choosing to structure your life in different ways, and it is OP's sister's responsibility how she lives her own life and how she finance it, so shutting her off was the right thing to do.

And that is what I don´t really get about this quarrel. If you pay lower taxes in the U.S. why don´t you just put the money aside for this kind of bills? Then you would have a little extra on top of your optional private insurance. Or just try to get over the aversion of raising taxes or give some substantial things into the hand of the community of solidarity. Don´t vote for politicians who praise individual freedom an independence over everything that reeks like "communism"/social market economy. If your highest value is your personal freedom and being independent from everybody you have to take care for that BY YOURSELF. You can´t have both, or hope for wellfare and charity from others. Why should they feel obliged to do that for you, if you despise the concept of solidarity?

No. Not everyone has access to health insurance. Those at or below poverty level can access Medicaid, those who are FORTUNATE enough to work for an employer who offers it, and those who can afford it get to enjoy healthcare. Our system is absolutely shameful for a developed country. There's a reason people file bankruptcy for medical bills. We pay enough taxes to make available healthcare for all. The reason we don't? Greed and corruption.

Sister: "Give me 20 grand or I won't speak to you again." OP: "Promise?" Sounds like the trash fire put itself out.

Socialist is not the same as social democrat, which is basically what all European so-called socialist parties are.

It's not like her sister didn't know that having a baby in the US was expensive. She should have planned accordingly.

Never give money or help out those who insult you and c**p all over you. Her sister doesn’t deserve her money or her kindness.

The nerve to ask for anything, let alone thousands of dollars from someone you have virtually no contact with because you've insulted everything even down to their partner is wild. The comment on the original post trying to assign OP some blame for not simply saying no is asinine too. Sorry, but you don't get to behave that way and not get talked to like what occurred.

Lol socialism looks pretty good now. The taxes we pay towards healthcare are a small fraction of what americans pay in healthcare bills and deductibles, plus theres no dealing with having only certain places accepting certain types of insurance.

I live in Spain. To earn ~2600 net the company has to pay ~5000. That includes incom tax, and SS and goes to pension. Health is free but not great at the moment..it's bogged down with bureaucracy and over protected workers with to many rights and not enough obligations. It tends to work better for big things.

One thing that really gets my goat is when people say social welfare spending of any kind is an evil communist plot that only lazy people want---until they wind up with 6 figures of medical debt. They are special, apparently, and deserve the help...

Free at the point of delivery isn’t free. The taxation of the whole nation, through a huge range of taxes ensures that the least able are supported by the most able.

Because in reality, the difference between average tax rates in the UK are only around 2.5% - 3% higher than in the USA, so their taxes really aren't that low.
