Ramen Sculpture - the hottest trend (pun intended)

I actually saw these sculptures (not the real frozen ramen) in front of some ramen (ramyeon) restaurants in Korea. Some of them are even moving, like the chopsticks go up and down. And, yeah, they are huge sculptures too. Very amusing to look at, so cute and funny.

Seriously. I'm in Utah. 15 years ago we were hosting the Winter Olympics, and this winter we've had one fruity snowstorm that was completely melted by the end of the day. I was planning on buying snow tires this winter, but there hasn't been a need! At least it's saved me money!

This is actually really interesting to see, because no one really thinks about the amount of hydration they lose in the winter since they aren't sweating. Back when I was on dialysis it always amazed me every year that I was losing the same or more water weight between treatments in the winter as he summer, despite the sameness fluid intake.

Holy carp, that's a real thing! According to Wikipedia: "Pancake ice is a form of ice that consists of round pieces of ice with diameters ranging from 30 centimetres (12 in) to 3 metres (9.8 ft), depending on the local conditions that affect ice formation. It may have a thickness of up to 10 centimetres (3.9 in).[1] Pancake ice features elevated rims formed by piling the frazil ice/slush/etc. up the edges of pancakes when they collide, both due to random bumping into each other and because of periodic compressions at wave troughs. Pancake ice may be formed in two ways. It may be formed on water covered to some degree in slush, shuga or grease ice. Alternatively, it may be created by breaking ice rind, nilas or even gray ice in the agitated conditions.

That may not be related to the cold (at least not directly). Looks like poor adhesion between the thermoplastic and the pavement when the markings were installed plus normal traffic or maybe a snow plow.

Ok, to me, this is what happened, the paint lifted off the asphalt, and someone poured hot water on the marking and it cracked. Or, the several layers of paint lifted and it got ran over with a car or a snow plow.

I don't want to be a buzzkill, but remember that there isn't that much snow everywhere. The snow from the road has been whiped to the side on top of the old snow, so the piles become huge. But if u take a peek behind the piles, on a field for example, there really isn't that much snow. ~35cm

This is a problem we didn't used to have. The old incandescent lights were much less energy efficient, but that meant that they produced more heat, preventing any such build-up of snow. I wonder what is more costly: less efficient lights, or paying someone to do this.

There are some traffic lights in cold regions which have heating elements. Either on the light itself or the whole unit. it’s pretty neat…. Unless you get s flash freeze. Then you just gotta wait a little longer for the unit to melt again (the lights melt quick enough not yo freeze. :)

I live about 30 minutes away from Washington (I live in North Idaho). And Wahington has less snow than here in ID. It is also sunnier in Washington than Idaho. The lowest temperatures we got was 10-27 degrees. Most of the snow that fell on top has turned to ice, so it's great for sledding! :D
