it's based on true events, but the "true events" were probably. y'know. all bullshít. what annoyed me about this list is that yeah technically Forest Gump *is* based on true events? though they say it's not. yet similar movies on the list are sorted into based on true events despite being the same kind of fictional/real

This is very misleading. Many movies here considered "true story" are, at best, just vaguely infulenced. And then you have Jaws. Technically, the book was based on the true shark attacks that occurred in 1916 on the Jersey Shore. But that's considered "fiction". So, the line between "true story" and "fiction" is pretty ambiguous at best. No way you can can consider The Exorcist a true story and Jaws fiction. At least we know sharks exist, as opposed to demonic possessions.

Quite. The thumbnail I saw asked if a movie was "inspired by" real events, so I answered "true" for jaws. Wrong, apparently.

#6 the wolf of wall street. Isn't really a true story sure Jordan Belfort was a con man and was convicted. But he wrote the story glorifying and adding made up stories to embellish and make him look more important. So even though it's the story of a real life con man it's not really based on the real facts or how his life unfolded.

Of the 28 movies, I've heard of 14 and seen 3. So 19/28 is pretty good.

Catch Me If You Can actually isn't based on a true story, technically. Turns out Abagnale fabricated large parts of his "autobiography". I know, a con man telling a bunch of lies about his backstory - how shocking.
