A movie quote that resonates with a lot of internet users is Harvey Dent’s line from 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight’ that, “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” The idea is that no matter how good of a person you might seem to be, eventually, you’ll fall from grace and end up going against your own supposed principles. The people you respect and adore one day might be whom you detest the next because you learn what they’ve done.

And though life’s certainly not a movie and the quote doesn’t hold true for everyone, it does highlight the fact that dramatic falls from grace really do happen, especially to stars. Suddenly, the scales fall from the adoring crowd’s eyes and they see the person for who they are now… or who they really were deep inside, all along. A villain, definitely not a hero.

The crowd over on r/AskReddit shared their thoughts about the very worst real-life examples of heroes turning out to be villains. Scroll down to read which celebrities and public figures they named and shamed, Pandas. And if you know of any similar examples, you can share them in the comments.

Entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington, aka Hollywood's Ultimate Insider, shared his thoughts with Bored Panda about public figures and stars letting their fans down, as well as whether or not we can definitively tell if someone well-known is being genuine. "You can never tell that a celebrity or public figure is 100% genuine. You just can’t, because you don’t really know that celebrity or public figure. You think you do because they’re famous, but you don’t. In all likelihood, you’ve never even met the person," he told us.

"In my experience, someone may be hiding who they are if you only see a glossy side of them." Scroll down for our full interview with Mike.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Dr. Oz is the perfect example. He started out a legitimate talented accomplished cardiac surgeon. Then he started with his snake-oil peddling on TV and has now completely devolved into a pandering narcissistic Trump-loving politician.

You are not the only one. A New Jersey resident, already trying to skirt election laws by running in a neighboring state? Definitely worth worrying about. PA pandas, please don't let this person get a shot in determining the course our state takes. We are a critical battleground state - if we let this supposed doctor win, we will end up paying more than one terrible price at the hands of the far right.

My granddaughter is a pharmacist and she has told me that way too often she had people try to convince her or one of her staff that what their physicians had prescribed for them should be replaced by something from Dr. Oz's snake oil stuff. She says that often using his 'magic potion' instead of the prescribed med could be dangerous.

The only thing with which I disagree is the statement that Oz "Started out talented and accomplished..." Yes he was a surgeon. But was he truly as talented as Oprah and others insisted? From a close family friend who is a very respected cardiac surgeon (as in acknowledged by his peers for expertise) Oz was always a middle of the road, not terribly good surgeon. Regardless, he rapidly fell into being a snake-oil salesman of lousy repute. It's not just because he is a Trump sycophant. he because he has misled and exploited many desperate people with his quackery.

I like using homeopathic aids in addition to my medications. Maybe it's because my family is native american and our shamans know their herbs and plants of medicinal value. I think too many pharmaceutical companies and pharmacists are down on some natural things because the can't patent nature and unless they can synthesize the active components to make a profit, they think it's all bogus.

LA-based celebrity expert Mike told Bored Panda how we can tell if a public figure or a celebrity may be hiding something.

"If their life seems overly curated, only focusing on the good and positive of what they present to the public, then they may be hiding something. You can usually sense when someone has genuinely let you into their life, and when they haven’t. That applies not just to celebrities, but to the real people in your life as well," he said.

"We usually look up to celebrities and public figures, but it’s important to remember, despite their accomplishments, they are people just like you and me," Mike said.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Rudy Giuliani. Dude was “America’s mayor” just 20 years ago. A brilliant, ballsy prosecutor who took down the mob then shepherded NY through 9/11. Now he’s just thought of as the increasingly unhinged trump lackey that sweat hair dye in front of a landscaping company that shoulda been a hotel.

Apparently, Giuliani spent his time as prosecutor taking down the mobs *he had no business with*, while providing jobs and protecting other mobsters that were his associates. Among those associates, there were Bronx families (who benefited from government contracts and from prosecution of their competitors) and the Russian mob, who later was an important part of his political parabola with Trump. https://publicintegrity.org/politics/elections/fbi-tracked-alleged-russian-mob-ties-of-giuliani-campaign-supporter/ https://apnews.com/article/bde5137666480600ace2e9db264dcbb5 https://www.encyclopedia.com/law/educational-magazines/mob-was-citys-watchdog-during-giuliani-cleanup

The only reason people really liked him was because he cleaned up times square (hookers and homeless were literally arrested if they were caught, or at least told to move on) and that made the businesses happy because it was hurting their profits from tourists. And then during 9/11 he was with a lot of the police and fire at ground zero for days. He really appealed to a lot of new yorkers because of his dedication during that time (or at least, what seemed like dedication). People absolutely loved him and talked about making him president, etc. People were really emotional at the time and once the dust literally settled they realized he was kind of just milking it. He would go on every talk show, it was like... enough already.

Had 9/11 not occurred, Giuliani might have ended up in prison for all illegal and unethical acts he committed while mayor. He did a great deal of harm to those in great need and exploited his office to his own and his supporters benefit. Honesty and integrity are not words anyone would ever have used to describe Rudy. Not then and not now.

Foreword: Unpopular opinion so take this with a grain of salt. Ok but she still changed a ton of people's lives for the better. I don't believe that actions are louder than words, cause words can still hurt like hell, but whatever happened to giving people a little grace? I can acknowledge that she made a couple mistakes, but so has everyone. There are many people out there that have made more mistakes than her and done less charity than her, so why do we jump all over her all the time?

"Anyone, celebrity or not, is susceptible to making mistakes and doing bad things. When a celebrity does something bad, it’s amplified exponentially because they are in the public eye, and are being watched so closely by so many people. So when a celebrity does bad things, it’s important to keep perspective in mind.

According to entertainment and pop culture expert Mike, the expectations from fans that celebrities ought to be 'perfect' is a pressure that fans put on themselves.

"Don’t for a second worry about putting that pressure on stars. They know the pitfalls of being famous, and are very able to step out of the celebrity spotlight if the pressure to be perfect is too much," he noted.

There’s no such thing as a formal “nomination process” for the Nobel Peace Prize. Per their website, “Any person or organization can be nominated by anyone eligible to nominate. There is no vetting of nominations prior to the nomination deadline (…) To simply be nominated is therefore not an official endorsement or honour extended by the Nobel Committee (…).” This year, there are 343 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize. https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/nobel-peace-prize/nomination/

We did make great strides. A lot of pollution was taken care of (my local river was a cesspool, it is now beautiful), protections put in place, more inclusive access to buildings, parking, sidewalks. But all we did was supposed to just be the beginning. It wasn't supposed to stop or go backwards. That makes it such a tragedy. It's why the younger generation needs to keep going. I came of age in the 70s. Spiraling inflation, massive layoffs, huge gas price increases (and some astoundingly bad music). I feel like I have gone back in time.

When I think of Ireland, I think of only a few things (as a Latin American). 1) Kicking out colonial oppressors. 2) Brave enough to have a gay Prime Minister. 3) The people voted to allow abortion and expand women's rights. 4) Nothing is spelled the way it sounds. 5) Green hills. 6) Castles. 7) Fairies and unicorns. When I think about Irish boxers, I think about Steve Collins, but I'm also old and don't follow the sport.

I'll admit I was a fan of McGregor after watching his early UFC career, but my support for him stopped when he was the double champion. He held up both weight classes in favour of a boxing match with Mayweather. Not helped by his xenophobic trash talk against the champ Khabib. And of course the stuff in the mainstream did not help his image.

"I worry more about the disappointment fans experience when a celebrity lets them down, it can be absolutely crushing to the point of affecting one’s mental health. That’s when it’s important to disassociate yourself from the celebrity with the realization that you never really knew the person after all," Mike warned.

"There are a few steps stars can take to deal with the pressure of fame better. First, know that it’s part of your job description, and realize the perks of fame almost always far outweigh the negative aspects of it. Second, turn to your family and friends as a support system and to keep you grounded. Third, get off social media completely. And fourth, limit or stop public appearances. Just focus on your work, and let your work speak for itself."

Probably Elon Musk. I used to think “Well, the government is doing f**k-all to advance manned space exploration, so if private investors have to do it, I guess that’s how it has to be.” He seemed like he was genuinely invested in that, too. There was a lot of good will toward him in the public eye. Then he found Twitter, and everything went to s**t pretty quickly. Now he’s just that weirdo who pushes crypto scams and pays his employees to shut up about the kids he had with them.

I mean, he still is interested in spaceflight, that's not an act. The problem is, you know, all the rest. I don't know where I heard it from but I've always repeated it that Elon Musk is like "the souls of a 14 year old 4chan edgelord and a 1900s steel conglomerate tycoon crammed together into the same body".

Elon takes credit for the work of his engineers as his own, then blames them when they cannot meet unrealistic demands. He’s a total turd wipe. I would recommend listening to the Elon Musk episode on the podcast “behind the bastards”. It’s a great podcast, very informative. The guy who created the podcast was a journalist all across the globe, even went to active war zones.

It is the fact that he make people think he is the genius when in reality all he does is either take existing ideas and then recruit real geniuses to make it happen or makes wild claims that never happen or are nothing like his original claims, like the LA car tunnels. When you realise this it then becomes obvious that he was just a rich kid paying real geniuses to make him famous.

There's that fine line between genius and madness. Elon appears to have slid into the "madness" side these days. Being a multi-billionaire tends to do that if one is not careful. Elon has developed the "I've got the money so I can do anything" mentality, which ALWAYS will slide into the "dark side."

Is "manned" space exploration that important? It's cheaper, safer, and better for science to just send robots and probes. Why is "manned" space exploration anything more than a multi-billion dollar vanity project? I'd rather spend that money on researching medicines, increasing crop yields, or fighting climate change.

I don’t know him personally so I honestly can’t say anything about his character, but as I see it, a lot of people were scared to death that he wanted to take over Twitter. Why? In earlier news, billionaires were taking over platforms like newspapers and no one said anything about that. But with Musk wanting to take over Twitter, the house was on fire. Why? Maybe bc he has an opinion of his own and doesn’t let others dictate how or what he is allowed to think?

Amazon, for sure. About 22 years ago, it was a little known place where you could buy books online for cheaper than brick-and-mortar retail. To watch it gradually grow and transform into an economic power that makes Omni Consumer Products seem less like satire and more like a prediction... It's been interesting, to say the least. Can't say I don't love the convenience, though.

Everyone seems to miss the point that Amazon has single-handedly grown an entire world of small businesses, by allowing small businesses a platform to get the word out. The way they treat their staff is a totally separate issue. I've known quite a few Amazon workers personally that really enjoy working in their warehouses and distribution centers, being that I have lived close to their facilities since they built a center in my town.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Harry Harlow. He began his career as a young and unconventional scientist who wanted to prove that humans cannot survive without love and affection. To do so, he needed an animal that was sufficiently humanlike and easy to manage. He settled on rhesus monkeys. Harlow's research went in a really dark direction as scholar after scholar refused to acknowledge its validity. While his first wife died a slow, painful demise from cancer, he became depressed and an alcoholic. He decided to deliberately raise monkeys from birth with as little love and affection as possible to see if they could ever recover. They could not. Clinging to towels with wooden faces (which served as surrogate mothers), the monkeys couldn't learn about their culture or social skills. Some came out of their shells when introduced to new monkeys to befriend. To "fix" that, he invented the "pit of despair," an inverted pyramid the monkeys could not climb out of. They were depressed and pretty much became empty shells of living animals. There's a lot of stuff I don't cover here. Some of it I just don't want to mention, but for a fairly clearheaded summary of Harlow's work, [here is a link.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEEEu1HEtU0)

He's just as disgusting as Pavlov who did horrific things to so many dogs to prove his theory that a dog salivates when he rings a bell. He cut hole in the poor dog's throats so he could measure their saliva. The poor dogs would eat and eat yet never receive any nourishment because all the food fell out of the holes and didn't get to their stomachs. He did unspeakable things to animals in the name of "science" to prove something that basic common sense could answer.

His experiments showed a baby monkey would rather go to a model that looked like a real mom (accurate feature, fur, smell, etc) then a wire monstrosity wicker-monkey that had food and water. They literally picked the one that could give them a hug over the one with nourishment. After you see that once you stop the stupid experiment and go call your mom.

Many fans put certain public figures and beloved celebrities on a pedestal. They expect them to be absolutely ‘perfect’ in everything that they do. Whenever they make a mistake or show that they’re human, some pounce on them, taking pleasure in the fact that they messed up. However, simple mistakes are nowhere near the level of stuff that the people in this list did. ‘Evil’ is a word that might spring to mind when you start learning more about them. Fame doesn’t make individuals immune from hurting others.

Though we don’t agree that heroes necessarily ‘have to’ lose their way, the Reddit thread does draw attention to the fact that it’s dangerous to idolize anyone to a huge extent. It’s incredibly difficult to tell a person’s inner thoughts, feelings, and motivations when you only know about them from the media. It’s hard to see how ‘heroic’ or ‘villainous’ they might actually be without having met them in person.

And even then, many family members and friends could still be shocked to discover how the celebs change, seemingly, overnight. Though these changes rarely happen that quickly: it’s just that, suddenly, everyone learns the truth. Their reputation quickly crumbles and fans are left with the dizzying realization that they’d been loving and praising somebody who wasn’t worthy of that love and praise. It hurts. It feels like a betrayal.

I'm a full-on atheist but: Protestantism. It was intended as a reaction to the Catholic Church's excesses and corruption, contributed to people having access to their religion's central text in a language they ubderstood and wrested power from the clergy. Now there are American mega churches and rich televangelists making money hand over fist from the gullible masses, Amish and Jehovah's Witnesses shielding sexual abusers among their ranks and blaming and shunning the victims much like paedophile catholic priests are shielded by the church. This is in addition to the many attempts at theocratic states and horribly abusive societies birthed by the reformation. It was intended to be a cure for corruption and the gross accumulation of temporal power and ended up just as corrupted and power hungry. To be clear, in my opinion, all religions are dangerous and an abuser's wet dream but this is a very obvious example of a full-circle revolution.

Look at what's happening in the US right now. Some people in power believe that America should be a god fearing country, so they try to control our lives with it. The most recent being the downfall of Roe v Wade. I fear the next move will bring America to another civil war. On one side those who want a white Christian oligarchy and the other side being modern people who want freedom of choice and freedom to control their own bodies.

Don’t equate Protestantism with White Evangelicalism. Main stream Protestant ministers do just that - they minister to their congregation. Their congregation is the point of their church, not bilking their members out of millions of dollars. White Evangelicals are the extremists who build mega-churches and demand ‘tithes’ in ridiculous amounts that people can’t afford but give anyway for fear of being shamed; who cover up sexual abuse; and who dictate every waking moment of their congregation’s lives, including telling them who to love and how to vote. Their main message is give me money and hate those who don’t look like you, think like you, act like you, or worship like you. I understand because I was raised by White Evangelical parents.

To read scripture and see what it is actually about and understanding it, is totally different to when non-Christians grasp a verse or two and builds themselves an entire religion on that premise. That isn't Christianity. That's cultism. If we all treated each other as the bible suggests we do, this world would be a much nicer place to live in.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Joe Paterno JoePa was the shining beacon of what it meant to be a college coach when I was getting inducted into college football. And then...wow. For those that don't know.. he knowingly allowed and covered up for Jerry Sandusky. I live in Pennsylvania. He is still very much loved by a certain demographic here. But that demographic is willing to forgive anything, if you win American Football matches. The Philadelphia Eagles hired Michael Vick when he was untouchable (he was arrested for running dog fights at his home in Virginia). The only truly unforgivable act in the United States for a footballer is to kneel during the anthem, everything else if fair game. Torturing dogs, beating your wife, killing someone, and molesting children are all fine. Just don't kneel during the anthem while being black. As a Brazilian, I can say we treat our footballers the same way, except we don't care about the anthem.

This is profoundly inaccurate. He DID do something. He went to the appropriate authority (his supervisor) and informed them of it, then sadly and wrongly assumed THEY would take the appropriate steps to investigate. Which they didn't. He did NOT KNOWINGLY allow or cover up for Monster Sandusky.

And, he did NOT see it with his own two eyes. An assistant coach disclosed to JoePa, he took appropriate action, and understandably assumed they did their jobs, and the AC must have been mistaken, because they must not have found anything. Turns out, his leaders are the ones who dropped the ball.

But one way or another, the truth is that quite a lot of people enjoy learning about the dark side of humanity. That’s the reason why the true crime genre is so popular. Psychologist Lee Chambers explained to Bored Panda during an earlier interview that “in today's safe and often sanitized world, we are rarely threatened significantly, and the ability to explore evil, frightening and gruesome entertainment is one of the few ways we can visit this part of humanity while remaining safe and comfortable.”

“There is a level of novelty to it, it removes boredom quickly, and it helps us to discover our emotional limits while understanding the minds of those who go beyond social norms and potentially gaining knowledge of how we might avoid being victims ourselves. They also offer closure, with many stories ending with the mystery being solved, and the criminal being brought to a level of justice," the expert noted why so many are absolutely fascinated by real-life stories about evil.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Jim Jones. He originally stood up for civil rights when it was really unpopular. Was hospitalized and accidentally placed in the black ward. When the doctors found out, they tried to move him, but he refused. Then he became a cult leader and used his power and influence to end the lives of a thousand people.

This person didn't learn enough about the life of Jim Jones. He was always a user and abusive of his parishioners. Civil rights meant nothing to him, it was just a different system of controlling people and painting himself as a savior of black people. The people who joined the People's Temple and even attended his sermons in his early years had the best of intentions, but he was always a controlling megalomaniac. Do more research, please, let's not paint him as another MLK. He was pretty much always awful.

"It can take us on an emotional rollercoaster, have us trying to solve the puzzle and test our fear in a controlled way. The permission to explore evil is powerful, as we so rarely get the chance elsewhere, and in itself, it is healthy and normal in moderation," the psychologist told us, adding that some people find this ‘comforting’ because the evil they see or read about is happening to someone else, not them.

"The challenge we face is the fact that consuming too much of this can desensitize us, and cause us to become less empathetic to the suffering of others, more fearful of our own environment, and potentially be more likely to use aggression ourselves. It can also cause us to be triggered by our own previous adverse experiences, make it harder to manage our own emotional balance, and increase our stress levels, so moderating our consumption is something we should have front of mind, even when we get embroiled in the latest series that is pulling us in,” he warned that moderation is key when consuming stories about real-life evil.

Even people, we consider smart, can fall victim to this. My best advice - try to find more sources of the same information, check WHO made the claim.

Without that, not guilty was still the legally correct verdict. LAPD made so many errors in evidence collection, storage and chain of custody that "reasonable doubt" was hard to escape. His legal team was also strategically brilliant. The fought against a change of venue from racially diverse LA to predominantly white Orange County and refused to waive his right to a speedy trial. That denied the prosecution time enough to find ways to get around all the LAPD's fuckery.

He was a football player and actor. In the early 90s, he allegedly, but very most likely, killed his wife and a waiter. He was found not guilty. He later worked on a book called "If I Did It," about how he would have committed the murders. In 2008, he was charged with armed robbery and kidnapping over some sports memorabilia that he claimed was stolen from him. He was in prison for that until he was paroled in 2017.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Henry Heimlich, inventor of the Heimlich Maneuver, made up a bunch of untested uses for it (treating people having asthma attacks, and drowning victims were the two I remember) that he publicly talked up. Later, he funded an experiment that involved injecting people with Malaria to see if it would treat other conditions. The experiment was found to be unethical by American review boards, so he conducted them in Ethiopia.

There are just way too many people and corporations (and cartels) who are willing to make you a multi-millionaire/billionaire if you simply behave a certain way. No, there are still people who value principle over power and money. No doubt many good ones have succumbed, but it is not inevitable. Support the good ones who get relentlessly attacked by the others for silly reasons that don't hold up to scrutiny. There is a reason they are the most viciously attacked. The corrupt don't want to play with them because they don't play the game. Look for them - they're there.

Homophobic pickets, hate speech against atheists, Jews, Muslims, transgender people and also conducting anti-gay protests at military funerals. It got a bit unreal when they declared 'God hates Sweden!' https://satwcomic.com/god-hates-sweden

About 14 years ago after years of severe narcissistic abuse by a sibling and their now ex-spouse, I did a deep dive whereupon I learned about Narcissism and NPD. 😳 That info was the key that unlocked their lunacy. During that learning curve, I encountered an essay about the late Fred...yikes, he was a real piece of work 💔he was the devil's henchman, definitely not a man of God.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Philippe Petain. In WW1 he led the French to victory at Verdun, one of the worst battles in human history. In WW2, after France was beaten, Petain was the head of state of Vichy France. Guy went from the Lion of Verdun to the biggest Nazi collaborator in France.

It's one thing leading a nation that has had to surrender, to save civilian lives, that's fine. Against the Nazi war machine at the time France could do nothing else. But it's another thing to willing give up tens of thousands of your citizens to be gassed.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Netflix was once THE streaming service. Always had something to watch and the price was worth it. But now, most of those shows and movies are gone, some of them long before things like Disney+ and other network streaming services came about. It got to the point where it was a joke to say "you wanna watch it? Then it's not on Netflix" or something along those lines. Additionally, Netflix once put out a tweet about how "love is sharing your login" but is now charging extra for every additional party using an account. The price for a subscription has also gone up substantially, to the point where there were times my family considered dropping the subscription entirely. Netflix, how far you've fallen...

Exactly. Netflix benefited from being a first mover and an early adopter of streaming. It was inevitable that eventually the content owners like Disney, Sony, Paramount and other studios would realize that anybody could do that and that they were giving away their catalogs to Netflix for practically nothing.

I think this person is too young to remember that Netflix started out and became known as a DVD rental service via mail. Which it has a subsidiary that still does so. It created a market for DVDs in areas without stores. Then Blockbuster moved into the market and Netflix created the streaming service market. That it spun off into producing content doesn’t seem like it’s defining quality at any point in history to me. But I’m old. I’d say it was the innovator of means of distribution and nothing can take that away. As far as original content goes, I honestly haven’t noticed it being any less present or not.

The DVDs were usually damaged when we got them. I was so happy when they started streaming. We were streaming stuff for "free" before and Warner bros threatened our inter net provider, which in turn threatened to cut off our internet. No other providers in our tiny town, so yah. Deffinatly glad when Netflix provided a legal option.

I still find plenty of good things to watch. They replaced what they lost with brilliant Netflix originals. I have a bunch of streaming services, most of them actually, but Netflix stays a staple. My only complaint is they are talking about crunching down on password sharing. But, they haven't yet so I'm not too worried.

This one is more on the other streaming platforms in my opinion. Netflix was great, gave people what we always wanted. A convenient place to watch all our media without commercials at a reasonable price. Then everyone else wanted a piece of the action and pull their content from Netflix to start their own service. Disney, Hulu, HBO, Paramount, Stars, Apple, Discovery, Amazon, Peacock, Showtime. The list goes on and on now. Consumers ran away from cable TV because these companies destroyed its original promise and instead of learning from that they decided to turn streaming into the thing we all just ran away from. It's going to be this way until a new technology gives us another option (whatever that may look like) then it's going to be rinse and repeat.

Ghandi believed "menstruation was a manifestation of the distortion of a woman's soul by her sexuality;" argued that women should be responsible for sexual assaults carried out upon them; contended that fathers are justified in killing daughters that have been sexually assaulted in order to preserve family honor; labelled women who used contraceptives as whores; and once chopped off the hair of two female followers who were being harassed so that the perpetrators would stop. Just to name a few of the ways he was terrible to women. He was sexist prick

Gandhi (this is the correct spelling) did what he could do and was successful in forcing Great Britain to let India go. Unfortunately, some of the things such as religious differences in India could not be fixed and he, himself had karma that made it apparent that he was not perfect.

World of warcraft. I played it for many years from when the first expansion came out. Last few expansions have been horrible and the changes sucked. So much so that I'd pre ordered Shadowlands then more info about it came out and it was so bad that I cancelled my order and gave away my gaming computer because I'm definitely never going to play their games again because they've lost the plot.

The last few expansions have been 'horrible', yet you pre-ordered Shadowlands, and before a lot of the information was released? Can't blame Blizzard for that dumb move. Yeah Dreanor was a bit naff, but Legion was fantastic, and BfA was such a big part of the story. I leaned towards Classic when that was released, so I don't have an opionion on Shadowlands. I'f love to know what you mean by losing the plot. Ironicall, they past few expansions have only enhanced and improved the plot.

You get trapped I'm an Apple universe where nothing is compatible unless it's also Apple, and you have to constantly buy new items to use anything the way you used to before a new model was released. My problem with Apple is they started with the mantra "It's all about the customer, it's all about freedom. it's all about making sure things worked 100% before selling it the customer, it's all about not being an uncaring mega company like Microsoft. it's all about privacy." Then they made money with the iPod. Now they are the complete opposite of all of those and hypocrites. Can't believe they still preach about customer privacy and then admitted earlier this year that they look at every bodies stored photos!

[Specialist John "Stebby" Stebbins](http://www.crimemagazine.com/war-hero-who-became-child-rapist) portrayed in *Black Hawk Down* by Ewan MacGregor. Dude was a desk jockey in the US Army Rangers, deployed to Mogadishu in an administrative capacity. For one reason or another was pulled from his cushy position to fight on the ground with infantry and became a total natural, going berserk on the enemy and receiving commendations from numerous squadmates. Dude was nothing short of heroic in a nightmare scenario. Years later he was court marshalled and sentenced to several years in prison. He'd raped his daughter, a toddler. Total fall from grace if I ever saw one.

I had a longtime coworker that I earnestly thought was a great guy. Extremely funny, super charismatic, generally kind. Nice shoulder to lean on, exceptionally conversationalist. I absolutely thought he was one of the best people I had ever met, and did for several years. At the start of a shift, I found out from a girl that had dated him that he was physically and verbally abusive. He had dated several coworkers and multiple coworkers came out and said that it was something that had happened with multiple women, all of whom were scared to speak up about it because they didn't think anyone would believe that *he* of all people was a domestic abuser. I spent the rest of the shift nauseous and sick, unable to focus on work at all. On one hand it felt like a betrayal, and on the other I felt selfish as f**k for putting myself in any sort of "victimhood" in such a situation when there were genuine victims of his assault. I didn't really know what to do or say and at one point was walking by multiple coworkers, himself included. Just kept my head down and tried to walk by, but one of my coworkers called me back. Turns out, they were roasting the f**k out of him because he had just admitted to being a flat earther. I absolutely deflated, because his intelligence had been one of the things I really admired about him. In the course of a single shift, I found out one of the smartest and kindest people I knew was a physically abusive flat earther. He never faced any repercussions for his actions to my knowledge. I quit a couple weeks later, every shift was miserable after that.

That is really sad. But most abusers are extremely good at hiding the monster in them until they are alone with their victim(s). It's so wild how ppl can be a jekyll and hyde like that.

I understand! I thought of my sister's husband as a little brother. We were close. But he was beating her in secret. He then started showing his true colors: sexist, racist and a liar and animal killer. I wish I'd found out before he murdered my precious dog! Luckily he's her ex now, but a few months ago the police called me at midnight because he had thrown my young nephew down a flight of stairs. He's trash.

My dad used to work with a guy who he thought was a great guy, a good family man, etc. He'd offered to babysit my sisters and I and if he'd lived closer my dad would've let him. After the guy's wife caught him with their daughter and they took a DNA sample when he was arrested they discovered he was a serial rapist of women and little girls. Be careful who you trust!!

Yeah, been there. Guy was a sweetheart, seemed to adore his kind of ditzy wife (but we loved her too), quick with a joke, smart, etc. Long story short, she gets pregnant and they need a place to live before their next place is ready (about a month), so I offered to help. They weren't there 24 hours before I saw the real John (not his name), a POS that treated his wife like a slave. It all ended in tears when he literally kicked her in her pregnant a*s and she landed facedown on my bed. This was right after he bounced the back of her head off my wall. To the sounds of my screaming at him, he left, she begged me not to call the cops, and they quietly left never to be seen again. Broke my damn heart.

a friend of a friend was dating a guy like this. I thought he was really nice but then I heard a lot of terrible things about the way he treated her. She struggled to tell anyone and I still don't know If she has left the relationship. (I did put my snitch skills to use and told someone I thought could help) long story short it is so awful and uncomfortable to be around someone like that and I also couldn't confront him because I have a much smaller frame than him.

I can understand the OPs feelings of deflation, betrayal and disappointment... and although I know it's been said - I'll repeat one more time... not your fault. You may perceive that you put yourself in a selfish, victimhood situation... HOWEVER... it's not your fault... abusers are, like Lene (commenter, likely waaay above me) said are EXCEPTIONAL specialists and fooling others. I can't even COUNT the number of times **I** was (and sometimes still am) lectured, scolded and shamed for being 'distant' to a parent.... a Narcissistic parent who has repeatedly abused and manipulated me all my life... but oohhh so charming and funny and sweet as pie to everyone else... how could this person EVER have done you wrong? It must be you. YOU must be the jackhole. That's how it goes and that's how they set it up. It's not you. Even though I logically know it's true and ALL the evidence is there, I STILL feel like it's my fault ... so the guilt is real, but it's unwarranted.

I actually knew him a bit. About 25 years ago, I began to work as a translator. My first assignment was Hogan's trilogy: Inherit the Stars, Gentle Giants of Ganymede, and Giants' Star. I had problem with the last one because a part of the plot includes a clue hidden in a crossword - that's hard to translate, especially when you're starting out. I wrote to him and asked if I can change a few things. Also, his explanation of gravity contained an error and I suggested an improvement to the sci-fi theory. He wrote back and we reached an understanding. He was apparently going through a divorce at that time, but he still helped me. But I never translated another one of his books, and years later, I randomly discovered he died - the first of "my" authors to do so.

It's a little bit more complex than that. Arnold thought (rightly or wrongly) that other, less able men, were being promoted ahead of him because of political connections that he lacked. ____ He was also charged over some financial irregularities, for which he was acquitted. ___ Also he was in debt for what he saw as legitimate military expenses he had paid out of his own pocket, but for which Congress refused to reimburse him. ___ He was convinced that both the charges and Congress's refusals were politically motivated retaliation for his complaining about the promotions.

Sorry to bring logic to the discussion, but just for the record, he obviously isn't "remembered only for his being a traitor", or by definition he wouldn't be on this list. There are/were thousands of traitors who aren't known or remembered even for that.

He was a Revolutionary at first, and genuinely tried to gain fame by fighting for America. When he wasn’t recognized and felt cheated, that’s when he became a Loyalist. I learned about Arnold every year in school, and it was made pretty clear about that fact. Also, “traitor” isn’t a good word to use here, as that’s only the British point of view. “Revolutionary” is accurate for all points of view. Since that’s the world you used, it makes me think that you might be a bit salty you lost that war.

Neil Degrasse Tyson. Though he became less of a "villain" and more "buzzkill". At first he seemed like the next Carl Sagan, celebrating the wonders of science and the universe. But somewhere along the line he turned into this smug, pseudo-nihilistic wet blanket who poo-pooed on anyone getting excited over solar eclipses and stuff. As someone who grew out of that mentality back in middle school, it's honestly kind of embarrassing to witness the same attitude being showcased by an actual astrophysicist who's old enough to be my dad.

I love the guy for what he tried to do, but he's become a broken record and a snobby one at that. The difference between him and Sagan is that Sagan never stopped doing science. Even as an entertainer, his primary focus was on what he was doing behind the scenes with NASA and activism and so forth. Tyson drifted away from the science and more into celebrity, which really altered the value of his content.

I once got into a brief argument with Neil Degrasse Tyson when I heard him make the statement that “Zero is the same as nothing because it has no numerical value.” I tried to convince him he was wrong. At one point in the discussion he said “Well, I have a PhD in astrophysics, so I should know.” I countered that with “Well, I know how to count, so I should know.” (By the way, the numerical value of zero is zero. You can find it on a number line at the zero position).

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains Chris Benoit This was terrible to see. I was a huge pro wrestling fan back in the day. To my knowledge, Benoit was actually a great person until he suddenly wasn't. That 'suddenly wasn't,' though, carried a hell of a consequence. It's actually kind of amazing how people with severe CTE act very similarly. When your job is basically to pound your brain in every night, who knows what will happen? Just look at all the NFL guys who have similar issues, i.e. Steve McNair. I feel bad for everyone involved, which includes Benoit himself. I don't think he even had the ability to reason anymore. Steroids didn't help, but I think they only expedited things.

I stopped watching wrestling after that happened. Yes, it's tragic what happened to him, but he did murder his whole family. Then the fact that it was swept under the rug like nothing happened. Like yeah, we'll just pretend he didn't exist. I still find memorabilia from that era where they literally put a sticker over his name.

I also stopped watching wrestling after this happened. I was a HUGE Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Batista fan and I remember they had a sweet memorial for him. Then the next day I tried to buy some Chris Benoit memorabilia and I could be wrong, but I think it came out later what he had done and every trace of him was erased from the WWE website. Then my heart broke further realizing what he did and I couldn't keep watching Raw and Smackdown.

Chris Benoit was a wrestler who, as said ebove, eventually got brain damaged in a number of ways. At a time where the company was not exactly supportive or sensitive about such matters. He apparently/allegedly murdered his wife and one of his kids before hanging himself.

Should we count this as "hero-to-villain"? CTE is a type of brain damage, as far as I know, so he should be more of a victim of the industry, than a villain.

He introduced some good stuff like the minimum wage and sure start, but failed to undo the Tory economic policies which caused the 2008 crash in the UK, or to build social housing or reform the UK election system which allows parties <45 % of the vote (probably even less, but but I think voter turnout is low because in many constituencies it probably won't make a difference ) to have 100% of the power.

Uh, sorry, am I missing something? The post doesn't say he won the "Nobel Peace Prize twice". It says he won the "Nobel Prize twice", which (as the reply details) he did...? EDIT: I should add, IMHO his advocating/researching Vitamin C benefits doesn't quite qualify as "villainous", especially since, as I recall, he wasn't strictly against all other medical treatments, surgeries, etc. I just remember it being more about a hopeful alternative than science-denying, hydrochloroquine-ivermectin-level evangelism. But his hope/research for broad medical use of course brought him plenty of quackery ridicule.

For me, Dennis Miller. He was my favorite comedian in the 80s and 90s. I watched *Dennis Miller Live* on HBO religiously and I listened to *The Off-White Album* so many times I could quote it front to back from memory. He came off as a "progressive centrist" who by today's standards would seem like a leftist comedian even though he had some definite right-leaning views. (He was famously pro-death penalty, for example.) I didn't agree with his every stance but he always came off as educated, funny, and reasonable, with a dry and cynical wit that I plugged into immediately and honestly informed my own sense of humor a lot. Then 9/11 happened and he went f*****g insane. Went immediately into the right-wing grift circuit, where he's been ever since, and took all of his old material out of print. He's utterly insufferable now. ETA: I remember a really pathetic instance of this back around 2010 I think? where I was googling to see if I could find a copy of Off-White and got steered to a video clip of his right-wing radio show where a caller was asking about his "old commie material" and he disavowed it vehemently, claiming "I don't even remember a single one of those jokes". Just a few months later he was trying to stage some kind of comeback and got a spot on Leno. After a minute or two of his right-wing b******t not getting one single laugh, he panicked and launched into some of his best bits from Off-White, a 20+-year-old album of jokes he "didn't even remember", and it absolutely *killed* the room. And you could see on his face in real time just how much it grated on him that that was the Dennis Miller people actually liked and wanted more of. He used to be one of the funniest people alive. Oh well.

He was always a little bit of a douchebag. I used to watch his HBO show Dennis Miller Live back in the 90s. He was known for always trying to be have a 'smart commentary'. But it was in such a snobby and smug way. If you're smart you don't have to try as hard as he did- it just came off as superior and arrogant. Jon Stewart was able to do what Dennis Miller was never able to, and that was being smart but likable. Dennis is not likable. But at least back then he was able to have a good time talking to guests and was much more funny and wasn't such a right-wing, joyless nutbag.

Very unpopular opinion/facts. He was a Chemist. During WW1 most countries were employing scientists to develop chemical weapons and both the Axis and Allies used gasses against each other....there wasn't a singular person at fault but as a collective. ALL scientists we're doing their duty to their country. Do I condone it? Of course not. As with Zyklon B, it was officially used as a pesticide not a murder weapon.....it was Farben who found it a useful tool for mass murder. Fritz committed suicide after knowing that his pesticide was used to kill millions!!

Fritz died of a heart attack in 1934. It was his wife who committed suicide. He knew nothing of the holocaust. His cyanide based rat killer Zyklon originally had a powerful smell of garlic as a safety measure. Zyklon B had the smell removed at the request of the german state. Long after Haber was dead.

People can call themselves whatever they want and I will happily oblige because trust me, the last thing they were thinking of when they made that decision was "oh I'm going to spite the boomers by changing my name". You are not that important. And if it makes them happy and confident then take the extra millisecond to remember what they call themselves. I keep trying to explain to people the reality of masks Vs viruses. Before Covid makers and suppliers of surgical mask such as the IIR type posted a table of their efficiency against different sized particles. All showed zero protection against particles smaller than 3 microns. The Covid19 virus is 0.3 microns. Now nearly all have removed these tables from their websites. Research such as from Southern Research Institute, Birmingham, Alabama from as far back as 2010 showed that most face coverings provided a much lower level of protection than people realised. Even against larger particles many masks with the exceptions of n95 were at best 33%. Against viruses this fell to around 3%. What most people also don't think about is that governments gave no clear guidance about face coverings and which ones to wear and not to wear, such as not wearing visors that gave zero protection.

We had the rent raised and this pushed us into owning a home. Had a huge chip on my shoulder about the landlord squeezing me for more money and enough was enough so we bought a house. Fast forward a few years and we move towns for work and rent out the house. ( 6months before COVID ) I quickly became that landlord who only saw dollar signs when the rent came late or wasn’t paid in full. Sold the house after COVID caused the tenets to just stop paying and I had to shoulder my mortgage and the rental we had in town.

I have some sympathy for landlords. No one seems to like them, but they put a lot of money out there in hopes of getting some sort of reasonable return. People treat the places like c**p and it ends up costing them a fortune to fix. Or even just normal wear and tear can get spendy. We rented a house for several years at a pretty reasonable rent (for the area) and the roof started to leak. Ended up needing a completely new roof. It cost the landlord over $25,000, pretty much wiping out any profit he had made over 5-6 years. We had to move, but he was definitely going to have to raise the rent. (and we did get all our deposit back!)

There are upsides of renting. Furnace goes out? No need to shell out $1000s ASAP. Appliance breaks, water heater goes out, pipe bursts, aircon goes out, etc etc? $$$$ ASAP Landlords get a bad rap when they don't fulfill their side of the bargain, understandably.

Just watched a video on Fritz Haber. He was one of the two German chemists to create the Haber-Bosch process in early 1900s which is credited with supporting the life of 4 billion people. He became an instant hero for the world and is the main reason world hunger is no longer a production problem but a logistical one. He ended up winning the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1918, but between creating the Haber-Bosch process and winning his prize in 1918 he was a major player in WWI. During WWI the allied powers put a trade blockade on Chilean saltpeter which was a major source of ammonia for the production of explosives. So he used his plants to turn from making ammonia for crops to making ammonia for weapons. Not only this he was instrumental in creating one of the first used chemical weapons in WWI, Chlorine gas. He became known as the father of Chemical warfare. If that was not bad enough in the 1920s scientists at his institute developed a cyanide gas we now know today as Zyklon B, the chemical used in Concentration camp gas chambers. Despite creating the process which would theoretically end world hunger he is more know today with creating chemical weapons and supplying the Nazis with the chemical they would use to kill over 10 million people.

Charles Romley Alder Wright: The inventor of Heroin. Back in the 1890's, Morphine Addiction was bad. But it was still a pain reliever and general anesthetic. Considering this was a time when surgeons just started using drugs to put patients under instead of holding them down and hoping your assistants were strong enough to pin a thrashing patient still, they couldn't just get rid of it from the market. So Wright wanted to make an non-habit forming alternative. Something so patients wouldn't be in pain, surgeons could work calmly and efficiently, and no patient would get addicted. Before Mr. Wright found out about how terrible of a drug he had made, he died. Bayer (the pharmaceutical company) further developed the drug until the Treaty of Versailles first banned it. If Mr. Wright were still alive, he'd be branded a monster and there would be calls to get him locked up. But when he died, people probably thought he was a hero for making a non-addictive morphine alternative.

As of now, mark cuban is in the hero stage for making medications affordable. My fear is that once it really catches on, he’ll increase the prices and we’ll be back to where we started. Mr Cuban, please stay the hero we need.

Richard Jewel. Security guard at the Atlanta Olympics who saved a bunch of people from getting killed by a bomb (could have been killed himself) only to be falsely accused and harassed relentlessly by the FBI and media when an FBI agent leaked to a local reporter that he was a prime suspect. They even tried to convince him that they thought he was a hero and trick him into doing a 'bomb threat video' where he was the bomber. The idea was to later use that as evidence against him. Poor guy and his family suffered for months while the FBI basically fabricated evidence, raided his home and kept him under surveillance 24 hours a day. He was eventually cleared as a suspect but only after pressure from his lawyer to basically charge him or provide him a statement saying he wasn't a suspect any longer.

40 Real-Life Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Turn Into Villains J.K. Rowling Seriously. Hell, she could’ve even kept milking HP for all it’s worth (and then some) if she wanted to stay in the public eye. Instead, she chose to use her platform to spew hate…toward part of a demographic that very much loved her books. It’s baffling (and yes, really upsetting to me as a queer person who grew up with HP).

No, she didn't. Nuanced argument does not equal hate. Please, people, grow up.

She did though. you can "nuance your argument" all you like, but if it's causing harm to people, and you know it's causing harm to people and you continue to argue your (incorrect) argument, it's hate.

All she said was that a genetic woman is different to a trans woman. That is not hate that is fact. You can and do treat them the same. However you think and act a trans woman is still genetically male.

Which is why Trans-gendered people in sports are a huge topic in the news, having a Male gender that has gone through puberty, then becoming female, gives that person a better physical advantage over a person being born female. Swimming and Rugby League now have a policy that the sex you were at birth still stands for that sport. Other sports now demand that trans keep their testosterone levels down for a certain amount of time to be able to compete.

Personally she’s still a hero, for not being bullied. These people preech tolerance and love but are vile bullies, if we don’t pander to your belief system and stick with facts then we are deemed worthy of abuse. Such a contradiction of your supposed ideology.

I think this really shows the level of stupidity of society today. Everybody hating her because she said that a transgender women is not a biological women. If you really don't understand the truth behind that you need to return to school and take biology again.

I bet most people who hate J.K. Rowling, didn't read what she actually wrote. That's the issue with just about everything now. Sheeple in tribes being loud based on other loud angry people who are even less informed on the issue they "stand" for.

I wonder if there would be so many downvotes if Chris Rock was a woman. Will Smith hitting Chris on live television was so wrong. You don't hit someone, period. Doing it to defend his wives honour makes it even worse, talk, don't use your fists. Or let her defend herself. (Just my opinion, no need for downvotes)

I am not convinced this wasn't some misguided stunt concocted between these two. If you look at the photo at the moment of the slap, they are both smiling - almost laughing. I think it went bad so fast they both decided to just let it play out and not admit to any prearranged agreement. They tried to get both their names on everyone's list and it cosmically failed.

Let's paint a picture. The woman you love has been losing her hair. She is afraid to go out in public and is really sensitive about her appearance, especially since she shaved her hair off. You get an invite to this swanky party and finally managed to convince her that the world is a better and more accepting place- that no one will make fun of her appearance. And just when everything seems to be going well, the main host calls attention to it, making fun of her to the laughter of everyone else. You look over at her and she isn't smiling, all you see is pain and humiliation and your broken promise that she wouldn't be made fun of. I don't think Will Smith was the villain in that incident. He could have reacted better, but Chris also could have acted his age, rather than his shoe size for picking on a person's appearance in public.

JFK. Had so much potential to get drug down into corruption, nepotism, and such between his family's power, ties to the mafia, and womizing. But he was assassinated before that could happen and died the hero.

He was trying to stay the hero, that's why they assassinated him! Then his brother carried on the fight and he was assassinated too. This one doesn't belong here at all.

JFK's handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis was awful, allowing a US ship to drop depth charges on a Russian nuclear sub. The world almost ended but one Russian sub officer of the 3 said no to nuclear retaliation.

I think OP's point here, not that they make it well, is that *had* JFK lived, those ties would have villainized him, fairly or unfairly. And if it's not their point, well it should have been.

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, 2 of 3 Russian sub officers voted to nuke the US after a US ship dropped depth charges on it. JFK was responsible for almost blowing up the world.
