This Is A Photo NASA Took Of A Space Shuttle Leaving Our Atmosphere
Really! It looks so... small, so tiny and graceful.
Load More Replies...This blew my mind. To think about how small we really are. The universe is a big place.
Just goes to show how small and insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. Amazing shot!
The Inside Of This Guitar Looks Like An Apartment I Can't Afford
This must be a brand new guitar, because it looks like the perfect dust collector. :)

Really? They are quite common. My younger brother works on one.

Thank you for the link. This is fantastic. Lot less injuries to workers. No mortar ? - or whatever it is called in your country, like gluing cement between bricks.

I'm from Holland and even in Assen (of all places) they use this machine.
Never seen it. And I am Dutch and live in the Netherlands all my life.
well... you don't actually have to make pavements that often :D I've never seen anyone make pavement anywhere ever

I assume that empty space is filled with organs... heart, stomach, etc. Just like every other animal with a skeleton. In Samoa, they turn live tortoises upside down and cook in their innards. Disgusting, but 'strue!
Oh no kidding!!! They're so sweet and spunky.

Funny, as a member of an amdram group, I was actually envious of how much space they have and thought how great it must be to have a “proper” theatre.
Load More Replies...The Blood Vessels Of A Hand
I tried to make a pun , but my efforts went in vein ...
Load More Replies...Look how many vessels are on the fingertips. No wonder why even the smallest of cuts there bleed so much!
Ah Ha! This explains why my finger bleeds so much when I poke it with my sewing needle. (Accidentally, of course)
I was thinking the same. Several years ago I accidentally (obvs) smashed the end of my finger off. OFF!! Yes. I know. Horrible. They sewed it back on and it looks fine if a teensy bit wonky but holy cow it was bad. Smashed. Off. The doctor said it was a burst fracture and that they may have to amputate the whole thing. Sorry about this anecdote but I just really wanted to tell people about it.
Load More Replies...Wow. Yeah, and mine are becoming very messed up versions of this (bc of Erosive Osteoarthritis) 😪
What A Modern Battleship Looks Like With No Water Around It
The fact is this all aluminum vessel can hardly do battle anywhere. It can hardly protect itself in a combat zone. Any weapons (usually anti-ship missiles) make it a prefered target for Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles . . . that will most likely sink it because the LCS defense mechanisms are not well suited to defend the vessel. To defend oneself from ASCMs is to have at least a two-layered defensive missile capability. The LCS has a single defensive missile (SeaRAM) which has a max range of five miles. A supersonic ASCM covers that distance in seconds.
Load More Replies...Actually, not a battleship; this is a U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ship (LCS); probably the USS Independence, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Independence_(LCS-2)
Yeah, I'm with Steve on this. There aren't any battleships any more - the US decommissioned all of theirs decades ago, and none have been built anywhere since WW2. If this sounds like splitting hairs to you, do consider that it's kind of the same as calling a Porsche a type of articulated lorry.
Load More Replies...I once touched the belly of a submarine while it was in dry-dock , strange feeling.
It's not a battleship. The battleships were all retired decades ago. This is a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS)
Wow--always pictured it to be as boxy & bulky on the bottom as it is on the top! Looks a little like a Darth Vader mask too.
With the keel, in the middle of the underside! The BIG silver thing!!! It's a counter balance!!!
Load More Replies...That's not a battleship, that is a destroyer. There are no more battleships.
Ever Wondered What A Blue Whale's Blowhole Looks Like?
OMG there's a huge nose on their back! That really suprised me, no sarcasm.
I’m sorry this is causing a childish, stupid thought to pop into my head (“can you imagine the size of boogers in that thing!?”) ...remember I did apologize first, frankly I think my hubby’s stupid sense of haha is affecting me! yikes! Lol!
MmmK so first off, was there a guy with a camera RIDING the whale? I mean....wow. Second, not too long ago I was surrounded by twelve whales in a small boat and they were bubble feeding. They kind of smell when they blow through the blow hole but you can hear that exhale for a very long distance. Whales communicate there is no doubt. They also know we're there watching them. They're the best.
The photographer most likely was at a distance, and used a powerful telephoto lense to get the shot.
Load More Replies...Looks just like our nose/nostrals☺️God must have run out of ideas that day!
If Davy Crockett could have a wild front ear, why can't Moby have a big back nose?
An Early Human Embryo On The Tip Of A Needle
I had IVF done and the day they were going to insert 2 embryos inside my womb, my doctor showed me a foto of these two embryos. Right before she was about to take the photo away, I asked her if I could keep a copy of it. It was still a slim chance that these two little embryos were going to make it, however I still wanted that photo, so she gave it to me. It's 2 years from now and I'm a happy mother of two little twin girls. We have that photo framed and every time I see it I look at it and I turn and see these two little girls healthy as can be jumping up and down. It makes me realize how amazing life is and how blessed I am to be the mom of these two little healthy human beings.
pass down that photo to your twin beauty. Make a digital copy to presetve
Load More Replies...So...what interests me is that people can accept this, that we humans can evolve into our current state from an embryo the size of a needle in 9 months, yet the some of the same folks don't believe we evolved over billions of years from single-called organisms. It's just interesting.
I always found our own bodily structure at birth to be almost alien and creepy, it's too weird to thibk about how I used to look like that. o.o
Ah, if you only knew all the secrets of the human body, you wouldn't find that creepy anymore.

Load More Replies...Ever Wonder What The Top Of Everest Looks Like?
Many people don't realice that the Everest is littered with trash, bodily waste and dead bodies. I discovered that years ago and still feel shocked. So sad.
True humans always ruin environments just so they can say they did something
Load More Replies...Exaggerated curvature is result of "fisheye" type lens.
Load More Replies...People rarely reach the top on their first climb. It's usually the 3rd or 4th attempt that's successful. This isn't something you randomly decide to do one summer, it's something you set as a goal early on and spend decades training for and achieving. Being able to put a flag, for yourself and for those who didn't make, is a lifetime achievement and a major point of pride. Most climbers, if they die on the mountain they would much rather stay on the mountain. They often dedicated their lives to Everest, so Everest being their grave when the mountain takes their life is considered the most appropriate thing to do. It's much like the dead of the Titanic and the Edmund Fitzgerald in the depths with the wrecks. To bring them away and bury them somewhere else would be wrong. The bodies are often covered with the flag of their country as a point of respect. All of you complaining about the garbage and the bodies, unless you've been there and tried for the peak, you don't know what you're so glibly insisting should be done. Or what it really takes to get to the top, and back down alive.
It's too dangerous for people to retrieve bodies. Some people have died attempting to retrieve bodies so they leave them be. It is also a fitting reminder to the people climbing up how risky it is. Even lingering a few minutes too long on top can mean death on the way back down.
Load More Replies...Dear people those are not trash. Those are sacred Buddhist prayer flags and maybe some small amount of flags from various countries but let this picture not decieve you. To get to this peak is an arduous task that takes months and years of preparation and it is a spiritual experience... this flags are left up there with immense meaning. Yes, I'm from there and yes I my own people has been up there and I know what I am talking about. This place is littered with bodies and trash....
One can barely bring ones own weight to such high altitudes...
Load More Replies...Typical. Climb to the top of something majestically beautiful and then make it look like a rubbish tip.
People, they are not trash, They are flags left by people who climbed the mountain. The trash is elsewhere. The trash is the used oxygen tanks and other stuff people leave on the mountain. You can be honestly say, that wouldn't leave a flag, if manages to climb Everest? They are not always the flag of your home country. There are flags your kids made for you to put there, flag for someone who died trying to get there... Just think about this for a little while. Think how hard it is. It's easy to say from home and without climbing the mountain, that "this is awfull" and "who dares to do that", but I know, I would totally leave a flag. Even though I think, the mountain doesn't belong to us, it doesn't really even belong the climbers. It belongs the local people, to who the mountain is sacret and the name of the mountain is "Holy mother". From that point of view, I think it's a bit sad, what happens on there. Not only the flags.
Did you know that there are people who still insist that the earth is flat (Flat Earth Society). I wonder how they would explain the curvature of the earth that is shown here?
they could maybe by pointing out this is a wide lens or a fisheye?
Load More Replies...IT LOOKS LIKE A TRASH DUMP!!!! it is a little sad that we have polluted the highest point in earth this bad.
Read Beck Weathers' book "Left for Dead" -- tells how he was rescued during the 1996 tragedy when 9 climbers died. Will answer all your questions.
Pearls
Well, when you remember how these are "produced", it's no wonder that they consist of layers. Why do people actually wear them as a whole? They look much cooler like this.
Hailstones look like this too-- clear layers interspersed with shades of white.
Would you like a fun fact? The very center of the pearl actually only in some cases is a grain of sand. Most of them are the eggs of a tapeworm... Yeah...😃
I don't know why, but you're comment cracked me up. haha

We have one like that. Once the timers are set you can't open it until the time on all 3 is up & it takes a top and bottom combination lock.
Yup, except if you get in the vault mechanic. He/she can open it if it malfunctions or you set the time wrong.
Load More Replies...My Mom used to work in a bank with a vault similar to this. I would hang out and play in the vault as a child sometimes.
What bank would ever let a child behind the teller line to play in their vault? I worked in banking 30+ years and never was a child allowed behind the line, and absolutely never allowed in the vault.

Cool, my friend and I saw flowers like this (they were sorta ball shaped) and we wondered what they were.
Where I live almost everyone has artichokes growing in their yards.
Have You Ever Wondered What A CT Scanner Looks Like Without The Cover On It

A Mature Hedge Cut In Half
Not dead at all. It's like the inside of the hand--thousands of vessels through which the life blood flows.
I found that out the hard way. When we bought our home, there were some overgrown round boxwoods along the foundation in the front yard. I decided to trim them back. Way back. I ended up with four spheres of brown sticks. I thought they would send out new foliage and look fine. Nope. Killed them deader than a hammer. Never trim them WAY back, just a little at a time! lol!

If You Ever Wondered How They Install Those Huge Power Line Towers
I'm pretty sure that this isn't how they were first installed, back in ye olden days, before I was born. And people who complain about wind turbines obviously don't remember when these pylons traipsed all over the landscape. I always found them scary
Back then they must've used something similar. Helicopters have been around a long time, tho.

The Inside Of The Leaning Tower Of Pisa Is Empty
This is shocking, yes, but also tricky: what we're seeing here is the inner shaft of the Tower, around which the spiral staircase is wrapped. Since the Tower is actually a Belltower, it's logical that the inner shaft would be hollow. The monks were never supposed to climb all the way up just to ring the bells.
This is one reason I actually LIKE the comment section, occasionally someone has a fun tidbit of info I didn't know...
Load More Replies...This is the inner schacht. The tower was not only built as a bell tower but also as a secret hideout for the clergy. In case of danger the schacht could be easily "filled" with wooden floors. That's what the little black stones at the wall (one can see here very good) are for...
I didn't knew that, and makes perfect sense. A wooden structure to support the flooring and a wooden stair would be easy and quick to place, true.

This Is What The Traffic Control Room Looks Like In Beijing
It's a photo of the city streets taken from a low altitude plane. Presumably this is actually a real time video, rather than a static image, so they can observe traffic congestion as it occurs and attempt to ease it by changing light patterns.
Load More Replies...I went to China when only the muckety-mucks had cars. The innermost lane was for vehicles, the two middle lanes were for bicycles, and the outer lane and the sidewalk were for peds. This Is What A Tumbleweed Looks Like Before It Dies And Roams The Land
These things totally fascinated me when I moved to Texas from the Northeast. Even had a "pet" tumbleweed in our yard for a while. The cats loved to chase it.
Also how it looks before it turns brown, you run it over on the road, and one of its thorny seeds gives your tire a slow leak. -_- Tumbleweeds are horrible. I don't care how much you romanticize them, they're noxious weeds that crowd out native species.
In New Mexico, we use snow plows to remove them from off of the roads!
We have three of those in our yard now. One with red and white flowers and one with blue flowers and one with burgundy flowers. Bee and hummingbird attractors. They are cut back for the winter but come spring, summer, and fall, we will have our veggie garden pollinated by the critters attracted by the multitude of FLOWERS and the critters will be fed! If I allowed them to die and dry up, they'd become tumbleweeds. Sage or Salvia plants. (Like sagebrush)
I have seen a similar thing on the road from Longreach to Winton in Queensland, Australia...just rolling along!
So that's how it looks before I ask who loves me... interesting
I always thought they just appeared out of no where because of all the roadrunner and other cartoons I have watched :)
So Apparently A 9 Volt Battery Is 6 AAA Batteries Taped Together
They're not AAA batteries. They're AAA A cells. A cell is individual and a battery is a group of cells so yes, it's not exactly surprising that a battery has cells since that's what it's made up of.
It surprising if you're not a battery nerd...lol.
Load More Replies...The 9volt battery has 6 "AAAA" (quadruple A's) in it not "AAA" (triple A's) and another battery that has this kind of construction is a A23 battery, there are 8 394 button cell battery's inside.
This Is What The Inside Of A Bowling Ball Looks Like
this is so fake. everyone knows they have baby armadillos in them.
Load More Replies...This is only one of many styles. There's dozens of different internal configurations to pick from depending on the performance characteristics you're after. A cheap $99 ball for instance just has a solid spherical core that's maybe slightly offset.
For anyone who's really interested - I've seen this video a couple of months ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlN1cQLZGE0
why don't they just use a fatter piece of wood instead of gluing all those slabs together? hmmm
Load More Replies...I used to make bowling balls (the Hammers) and the core looked nothing like this. Maybe technology has improved them ( I worked there in the late 80's). The ones we made had a ceramic core roughly 2/3rd that size. A couple of fun facts are 1) If you shoot a ball (pour the material the ball is made of) into a mold without a core, they essentially become potential bombs. A 2-part material is used to make the ball. When the material combines, it gets hot. Without the core to absorb that heat, the outside of the ball will cool while the inside continued to heat up. Sometime in the next 72 hours the ball could literally explode. And 2) bowling balls bounce. Just be careful if you try it as they can do real damage if they hit you.
Yeah, but what IS it and WHY isn't it round? Strange and fascinating...
yeah like the weight wouldn't be evenly distributed
Load More Replies...Rental balls are usually made the same. Serious bowlers can have balls made with different cores depending on the spin they want to have.
This Is How Cyclist's Legs Look Like After Tour De France
He is totally dehydrated, first of all. No fluids in his skin, so all you see are veins and arteries. The coloration is first, natural skin on the thighs (covered by shorts), highly sunburned skin on around the knees, and an obvious line where his socks cover his feet. And, yes, he needs massage and fluids every day to be able to start the next day.
random info : You'd think elite athletes are really healthy but actually they are just very , very good at one thing. ( ok count decathlon as one thing ) Most of them are very fragile health wise. That is why if someone has a common infection like a cold, they are quarantined from the elite athletes. And why at the big meets things like Infectious Mononucleosis can devastate an Olympic team .
I love random info that gives insight! This IS NOT sarcasm. Thanks, Magpie!
Load More Replies...Wow. I looked at the picture before reading the title and I wondered if this is even human at first.
Oh I would totally do that to myself.... Oh yeah... No pain, no gain. <3 In here I think, this doesn't even look that bad. He's probably a pro rider and this is probably not that big deel to him. I love cycling and hiking and the pain and the bruises and the "looking like this" and losing some toenails or whatever or making a hike to a mountain and actually crying the last kms because you're hurting so much.... And still be able to walk home yourself. That is something. It's amazing feeling to be able to do it. It's a battle inside your head. To know, you're gonna hurt later or maybe even during. And still continue and achieve your goal. When your head is screaming "this is insane, stop!" and you just keep on going... I cannot explain it, but to win that battle and be able to do something. That is amazing feeling. <3
Load More Replies...This Is What Cinnamon Looks Like When It's Fresh Cut From The Tree
If you bite it, is it hot like a cinnamon candy? Or is it more like the cinnamon I make cinnamon toast with?
I bitted a raw bark of cinnamon when i was a kid its rough just like... bark and taste exactly like cinnamon sticks. Or powder. It's good and it's hot
Load More Replies...When its "freshly" cut you meant to say. Correct? Having fresh cut anything is like having new mint money. People should know what cinnamon looks like. Just think of cinnamon sticks in mulled cider for example. It is bark. I always wonder how the first people discovered what plants were edible. If you have a few oops you may not be around to discover the good stuff. I used to think a person could know by watching other animals, especially birds if they ate it and were fine. But I've learned you can't count on it. Various animals can consume plants toxic to humans. Just like humans can eat foods like onions, grapes, and others toxic to dogs. A sad whoops story, how did someone discover the stem of rhubarb was edible but its leaves are poisonous? A fellow farmer my brother knew didn't know this. His wife processed lots of rhubarb to freeze. The husband tossed the leaves in the barnyard. Killed his ENTIRE herd of cattle. Bet they never touched that rhubarb to eat it.
Trees will die if too much bark is taken off. Here's how professionals do it >>>>>>>https://science.howstuffworks.com/life/botany/cinnamon1.htm
What happens to the tree? Without its bark, does it die? Does the wood get made into something else? I think a cinnamon wood box would smell amazing.
As Neil Young would say, “A dreamer of pictures, I run in the night. You see us together, chasing the moonlight. My cinnamon girl.”

OMG I would so LOVE to be in the middle of that! I know it's dangerous and noxious probably, but what if it wasn't and you could play in that stuff? Man ohhh man!!!
Fun fact: it’s called AFFF. Aqueous something forming foam. It creates a layer over the flaming liquid to suffocate the fire. It’s 3% foam to 97% water! They have it on most ships in case of diesel fires.
Same thing happened in the hangar of the airline I work for in YUL a few years back!

Oh cool, new factoids! Thank you! (No, really, I love learning new bits of trivia like this!)
Load More Replies...Not really that impressive. Has probably looked basically the same since the game was invented. Super low tech.
The tough part is getting the slate leveled and, if you've got a 3 piece slate, getting the pieces of slates level with each other so the seam cannot be detected by rolling a ball over it slowly.
That, I've seen before. Used to shoot pool in a league, and they must remove the top to replace the felt periodically.
Cactus Cut In Half
I hope that didn't kill it-those things take years and years to grow and are so valuable.
that type of cactus grows about 2 feet a year depending on where it's growing... i constantly have to cut mine down... compared to my santa fe and peruvian pear cactus, this is one of the faster growing types... plus, they can later on make another plant with that segment, and the original one will just grow more branches in weeks...
Load More Replies...For some reason I never thought about how a sliced cactus looks like. The more you know.
Interesting that there is no green inside. It looks dead. Maybe just spongy material? Would like to touch it to find out.
May use this image magnified many times for my future books on in terplanitary space travel and what they bring back. Look out Alien.
Catci are actually super resilient to being cut. In just 7 months, I have had to cut and trim mine so often, I now have about 12 plants. All flowering before even a year old!

How is it they colors don't get all mushed up , and it comes out pale purple ?
Most of the toothpaste is white, and then there are 'colour dispensers' near the nozzle of the tube... so when you squeeze it the tooth paste comes out striped. Like this 3702485.gif
In the picture, I guess they cut the very end of the tube off, where the toothpaste is already striped?
What The Light Inside A Lighthouse Looks Like (With The Original Fresnel Lens)
Fresnel lenses are quite an amazing development in optics dating back to the early 1820s. They can be massive like this one, almost certainly ground by hand on a machine or mass produced in plastic like those hand held magnifiers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_lens
Lots of maritime museums have them, and it's really neat to see them up close. It's even better to see a big one (first order) lit at night. Like the biggest, best chandelier ever! I think this one is a third order?
I have one in my house , bought it at a flea market in Maine .. it’s a beautiful conversation piece
And if you'd like to drive a lighthouse keeper nuts, pronounce the 's' in "fresnel" !
I think these are beautiful. It looks like a fine piece of art glass.

Load More Replies...Remember Boris and Natasha from Bullwinkle, the two Russian spies? They were sometimes pictured with an iconic round bomb with a wick-style fuse. That's actually the earliest sort of hand thrown grenade, starting in the 1800s, just a round brittle cast iron ball filled with a powder charge -- cheap and reasonably effective. A blacksmith could make them. They became associated with anarchist terrorist assassins in the years leading up to World War I (many anarchists of the period were peaceful labor organizers, but no one remembers them). Because they were used to symbolize violent revolutionaries, they were still being used in the 50s and 60s in Mad Magazine and Bullwinkle as the iconic weapon of these hapless soviet spies trying to capture "moose and squirrel."
I always thought the whole thing was filled with black powder or some sort of explosive.
Looks like neocubes lol. Those little magnet cubes that were such a hype not so long ago.
"Grenade" probably comes the Spanish "granada," which means pomegranate (the delicious fruit that grenadine syrup and Pom juice come from).
Here's What The Space Behind A Movie Theater Screen Looks Like
This really depends of a theater. One of my relatives works at a small movie theater and that theater does not have any speakers behind the screen. I once helped him to hang a new screen to the wall. But of course if the screen is huge like it makes sense to have speakers behind the screen also. :)
This only works when the screen is one with those thousands of pinholes to allow the sound to escape. It's all part of the surround sound system.
They used to do that at the Omni theater at the museum of science in Boston!

This Is What Space Mountain Looks Like With The Lights On

I see it. It's right over there next to that thing.
Load More Replies...I wonder what the Disney employees do with all the great stuff (not the gross stuff) they find on the ground under the ride. I guess someone is enjoying Crazy Dog Lady's fitbit.
We actually saw this last year - we were on the PeopleMover when they had Space Mountain closed down. It goes through Space Mountain, so when we went in, we were surprised to see that the lights were all on!
Why would they turn the lights on if it's supposed to be dark? Maintenance and/or cleanup maybe?
Disney World for sure and I think Disneyland also has one :)
Load More Replies...I was actually on the ride at Disneyland once when they had to stop the ride and turn on all the lights. This picture shows more of the outer edges....it was crazy how close the tracks ran! If you were to stand up in there while it was in motion, you'd DEFINITELY get killed. The best way to describe it is that it's like an intricate ball of metal track bent around itself.I was glad I had the opportunity to see it from that vantage point.

Load More Replies...I Thought You Might Like To See What Hydrant Look Like Installed And Unburied
In northern parts (for example, I used to live in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada) where there is a lot of snow in the winter, fire hydrants are "taller" by which I mean that most of the black underneath the colourful part is above ground. They also sometimes add a very tall "flag" or extended arm of metal so the fire department can spot them through the snow.
I always thought they would be deeper to escape the frost.
The specifications depend on where they are being installed.
Load More Replies...This Is What A Gas Station Looks Like Underground
Speaking of underground gas tanks at service stations. I heard that you should avoid getting gas while the truck is there filling these tanks. As they are filling the tanks, the gas being put in stirs up the contents that is resting at the bottom of the tank and then if you are pumping gas these are distributed in your gas tank. Just what I heard. Not sure if it's true.
Fire Bird, our local station would close off the entrance (run the chain across) while it was refuelling.
Load More Replies...Aha! That explains a lot. I thought each two pumps had its own tank, but of course the fill valve is way across the lot.
When I was younger, I thought a gas station was just placed there because it had gas underneath the ground naturally. So when a gas station closes it was because they literally ran out of gas.
To be honest, I imagined the gas and petrol reservoirs look different. o.0

I can only imagine the nightmare of connecting all those 26 awg wires. I work with 22 awg at work about once a week and that can be annoying as f**k.
That is more than a 100 pair cable. A 100 pair 26 gauge is a little thicker than your thumb. Still, air core cable is garbage.
We would always pick up left over scraps from new telephone wires when I was in grad school. We made cool rings out of twisting the wire around itself. Everybody had one.

Phasing, timings, inputs from roadway vehicle or video detection, emergency vehicle (fire trucks etc.) preemption. Signals in a coordinated system also have modems or fiber optic communication to operations centers where timings etc. can be revised remotely. Also, incident management in case an accident or event backs up traffic. Other stuff as well, could go on and on about their capability. Yes, I worked on these things as a transportation engineer in the traffic electrical unit.
