Recently, 24-year-old labor and delivery nurse Madi Swegle, who goes by the handle @Sweglestory on TikTok, shared a menstrual experience she had that left her terrified.

In a video that has been viewed a whopping 6.7M times, Swegle explained her cycle started as usual, until the unusual symptoms became almost unbearable. “Around 7pm last night my cramps suddenly got very very intense. This pain is the worst pain I’ve honestly felt my entire life,” the woman said.

The TikToker said she thought it was just “a normal awful period,” and you can see how, since our society has normalized severe period pains as normal.

But it couldn’t be further from the truth, when the symptoms soon turned into a traumatizing experience that left her utterly terrified and in disbelief.

This 24-year-old nurse has recently shared a terrifying menstrual experience she had in a TikTok video that has amassed 6.7M views

I personally think it is kind of gross, but that is not an excuse to not talk about it. I agree about applauding this woman. If this had happened to me and I didn't know what it was, I would have fainted. (And I have a condition where I could faint and then I could just die.)

I've had this happen a few times in my life of cycles. Luckily I'm done as of last Feb. menopause over done. A few were intact and some were chunks so to say. The pain. The pain. It's like your tail bone is being shoved and broken inside you from the cramps. The cramps as literally one continuous shredding feeling to your belly button. Yes you want to vomit. Because you also want to poo and pee too. I didn't know of the heat pad trick so I would curl in a ball an wait for the blob to extricate itself. The first time was around my 20s. A few in my thirties. And one in my late 40s. I started menopause about 45. I'm 53 now so it ended at 52. It needs to be taught. Because if someone is sexually activate it can look like a miscarriage. And scare them horribly. They can think it's a miscarriage and they can't carry a child. If it happens try to get it into a baggie to bring to a dr to examine and explain everything you can. Better to know than not.

Like the one woman said (about any female issue) "'Super rare' because we're taught not to talk about it". Went to OBGyn for something I thought was an issue. They're like, no, totally normal. Cost me $300. With insurance. You think I want to go back to OBGYN for any kind of issue? Also cost $90 just for office visit 60 days after starting BC just to tell him it wasn't causing any issues. Wrong horse I know, but they're hitched to the same post.

I wondered where this was going as the beginning of it is something similar that happened to me, I had such bad blood clots and heavy bleeding, then loads of cramps, which must have been contractions as my coil came out a little while later. It’s a shock to see something on the toilet paper that you’re not expecting!

Yeah, okay.

Every.Month.... chunks, diarrhea, and excruciating pain.... Hours on the toilet and no tampon or pad could ease the flow for Five Whole Days... Ended when I was 32 and got an IUD. 21 years of wasted days thanks to a mother who wouldn't give me the pill ( not that it helped much ) and an OBGYN who wouldn't give me an IUD even after almost being dead after childbirth due to excessive blood loss. I am currently starting to menopause ( 44 ) and will be relieved when this all will be over.

Sounds awful. I kept changing my gynaecologist until I got one who would listen, too many are awful. I had a GP that gave out the pill once old enough to have my own say, definitely not up to my mother once I turned 16. Fairly standard that you can do that in the UK thankfully.

When I had a period (I no longer have a uterus due to crippling endometriosis) I remember one day my uterus contracting like I was dilated to a 10 and it wouldn't go back down. It was worse than childbirth and to this day, I have no idea what it was or why it happened because I didn't pass anything. I passed out from the pain and ended up in the hospital. Morphine barely took the edge off. Four hours later, it finally stopped. Months later, the same thing happened to my ovary but that was because I had a tumor that was about to rupture. I had a total hysterectomy and I've never looked back. I'm so grateful to my doctor. He's amazing.

I honestly thought I had a miscarriage about a year ago and had blood tests done and everything. They put it down to a chemical pregnancy but couldn’t 100% confirm that but said it was just one of them things that happens…. looking at the pictures this is what happened 😩 I feel bitter sweet that it wasn’t an actual miscarriage now😭

It's been happening to me for 9 years. The last 4 years almost monthly. I just sit on the toilet for hours to "freebleed". I can't use tampons because they make the pain even more unbearable! I thought I was just getting old and the periods were getting worse. I'm glad to know it's not just me, but I hate how many women are going through this! 😢 Kudos to this awesome nurse!! ♀️💪

there have actually been a couple of scientific papers that suggest that they have increased in frequency since 2021 due to a certain vaccine. And before anyone thinks that I am just peddling conspiracy theories I have read the papers. They say they can't prove that it is or it isn't because of the vaccine, but they do show an increase over he last couple years. There is one of the papers: https://www.thegms.co/publichealth/pubheal-ra-22041401.pdf

Increase in progesterone can cause this. I had the DEPO shot after I gave birth and this was what happened my first period. The first thing that fell was like a tube. Once the rest fell is when I noticed it shaped like a uterus and that that tube that first came out was like the area where the fallopian tube meets the uterus bc it was attached on the other side after the rest of it came out whole. Was strange that's for sure. I was really scared after seeing the meaty tube and couldn't think of anything other than parasitic worms. I was so relieved when the rest came out whole and I saw what it was.

I honestly had this, or something a little lesser but just as messy and astonishing, in my 40s. Honestly, if I knew it was just my lining deciding to get gone in one go, I'd be okay with it over 7 days of tag-teaming pads+tampons to get through the work day without staining my clothes.

There has been research showing a 2000% increase in decidual cast reporting in 2021. It has gone from increadibly rare, to merely rare. There have been suggestions that it may be linked to the 2021 version of the Covid 19 vaccine, which has been shown to have occasional side effects with clotting. No causal relationship has been established at this time. I found it interesting to note the correlation with covid and the vaccine, and the very significant increase in reporting of what was previously such a rare thing. https://www.thegms.co/publichealth/pubheal-ra-22041401.pdf Edited for clarity

This happened to me and I thought I'd had a miscarriage. Felt just like labor.

Okay but did her period stop after she passed it, then? Does your body know you're done shedding the uterine lining or does it just keep bleeding because hormones?

I kept bleeding after it happened to me (twice!). The lining all came out, but unfortunately not the blood/fluids. Wish it was that easy!

Don't google it. I did. Regret it. It's horrific. Sending love to anyone who experienced this.

It's not that bad imho. But I grew up on a farm and care for elderly people, so I've seen a lot of things

After reading this, I don't ever want to hear another man complain about his poor wee balls hurting for a few minutes. I know that hurts for y'all, but go look up a decidual cast and then tell me to suck it up. I'd say suck your own, but you know...

At first I thought she had uterine inversion some how and was relieved that it wasn't. I can see how scary it could be regardless, especially after feeling all that pain

I am now wondering if this has happened to me, and I didn't realize it because extreme menstrual pain is normal for me.....

Agnus Castus 5mg could be sth for you. Talk to your doctor about it. It helps me a lot with making my period easier to handle (meaning not as much blood and not as much pain)

Yes, it happened to me at age 19 and I was scared and shocked. Also all these years I thought I had miscarriage and I felt guilt and shame. No one told me till my 40s. Ffs.

Doctors/nurses/etc aren't taught this because anything medical related to female only has basically never been studied, all but ignored. Medicine is very much male-centric.

OH, DAMN...this never happened to me and I'm long done , but I feel so bad for those who don't deserve such a horrible thing! SHYT Oh, also menopause , esp. including pelvic organ prolapse, is SO FUN.

Yeah, okay.

I honestly had this, or something a little lesser but just as messy and astonishing, in my 40s. Honestly, if I knew it was just my lining deciding to get gone in one go, I'd be okay with it over 7 days of tag-teaming pads+tampons to get through the work day without staining my clothes.

I always had horrendously painful cramps. Many visits to hospital ERs. I had this happen to me at least once a year. While I have 3 healthy children, I always though something was terribly wrong down there. Thanks for the info. Hopefully now it becomes common knowledge because of you!

Oh yeah let's not forget, this only happens to biological women. Not men pretending to be women. As a biological male, I can only empathize with real women on this issue. I hope my wife never has to go thru this but I will be there for her and with her if she does. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for what all real women have to suffer to bring forth life. You have my respect and my gratitude.

You'll always find a reason to be an a*****e? Trans people have different experiences and different hardships but this article wasn't about them. You had to use female pain to spead hate towards people you don't have any respect for. Thanks for making it about yourself and your contempt for others.

The article itself does not establish causation. It merely notes the rise in reported cases, and calls for more research.
