I dont understand why life in the USA seems so hard, from what I pick up on the internet. Why dont you all revolt and make things better?

I worked for company that told a young woman she could not take the day off because her grandmother wasn't having a real funeral. Her gran's entire house was washed away in a delta hurricane and no one has seen her since. It was a memorial service.

I was admitted to the hospital in early labor, and the next day had an emergency c-section. My former boss chewed me out for not calling out sick for the day - while I was in the OR having emergency surgery. I worked for the hospital I was admitted to.

no joke. i live in america. i was induced early bc my blood pressure was out of control. kid was in the nicu and i was on mandatory bedrest. job called me the day i delivered and asked if i could come back to work that monday (i gave birth on saturday) and said they couldnt hold my spot if i didnt return. (i know now this is illegal, did not know then) i told them i was not coming in and promptly was fired. i did get unemployment though they did try to fight me on it. America s*cks

Here in Canada, my late hubby had been working at his job for about 23 years when he got Stage 4 Throat Cancer. They put him on Long-Term Benefits with nearly 75% of his wages. For 10 years! 10 years as he fought the cancer (and won). They were negotiating when he'd be coming back when the fool choked on a pizza last year. The healthcare and job-related nonsense down south breaks my heart to hear.

Yep. Using my vacation days to go to a heart specialist hours away because the process for using family medical leave is so complicated and not guaranteed to be approved.

Tell me again how everyone "is sooo envious of us". AND we have certain politicians wanting to push RETIREMENT back even farther. Suuure: I'll be glad to have a heart attack at my s****y job at age 70+ so rich corporate a-holes can avoid paying taxes and never break a sweat. NO PROBLEMO!

I work for a French company based in the UK. All staff there start on 20 days paid holiday plus bank holidays. After 5 years that goes up to 25 days and after 10 years that goes up to 30 days. 5 of those days have to be taken between Christmas and New Year's day as the company is closed from 5pm on Christmas eve until the 2nd of January. That still leaves everyone with between 3 and 5 weeks of paid holiday as well as bank holidays. It is also illegal in the UK for a company to force their employees to use their paid holidays as sick days.

My HR in Germany: you still haven't picked up your time off. Remember you have to let us know of at least two weeks off by the end of the week.

As an American who left in 2016 & has been much happier ever since, I can add a hearty thumbs-up to this one!

Sad, but true ~

Yesterday I explained to younger colleagues that they don't have to use leave days for day case procedures, it counts as sick leave. I may have started a mutiny now.

You're only allowed to have such surgeries after you retire.

Can you afford an open heart surgery?

In Canada we usually get 3 weeks, depending on the company. We also have one holiday per month so that's a day off. And, we usually get 7 to 10 personal days.
