“We live in a ridiculous world and we can't help but engage in it ridiculously,” says Denis Gagne, the mastermind behind Real Funghi Comics—a statement that perfectly captures his humor.

Growing up on Kids in the Hall, Mel Brooks, and David L***h films, Denis developed a comedic sensibility deeply influenced by surrealism and satire. He constantly observes everyday absurdities, transforming them into quirky, unexpected comics that resonate with fans of the bizarre.

In Gagne’s world, even the darkest themes come with a smirk, and his comics offer a refreshing escape for anyone who enjoys laughing at life’s peculiarities.

We reached out to Denis, who shared what has changed since his last post on Bored Panda

“Quite a bit! I started my own website and it's getting good traffic. I've gotten published in some zines and I'm planning out my own comic book.”

We wanted to hear from Denis himself how he would describe the essence or theme behind his cartoons.

He wrote: “I think the essence of my cartoons are dark jokes in bright colors. I try my best to end most of them on a non sequitur or in just an unexpected fashion.”

When asked about a typical day when the artist is working on a new comic, Denis commented: “Writing out an idea maybe takes the most time but the least amount of effort. I'll usually write out a rough outline of the joke and then it takes a day or two off and on of editing to plan its layout. From there it takes me a day or two on my iPad to draw it. The longest part is always the preparation.”

Every artist has bad ideas once in a while, therefore, we were wondering if Denis has ever scrapped a comic idea after starting it.

“Yeah pretty often. When I first started drawing comics I'd draw everything I came up with and was rarely happy with the result. Nowadays, if I lose steam on an idea, I have less of a hard time abandoning it. Sometimes a joke or idea can seem great at first, but as you work on it I realize that it's not as good, the initial laugh it gives wears out,” shared the artist.

Lastly, Denis added: “Baker Street is peak rock saxophone. Salt and vinegar chips are trash. Travis Bickle is cringe.”

Rebuts, possibly. Refutes - probably not. But maybe he doubts that he should doubt?
