Just like The Little Mermaid before it, the upcoming Disney live-action adaptation of Snow White has turned out to be a magnet for controversy. This time, however, the lead actor, Rachel Zegler, who’s going to play the titular damsel in distress, seems to have invited scandal with open hands after publicly bashing the original.

In a series of interviews, the 22-year-old West Side Story actress openly expressed her strong dislike for Disney’s original 1937 classic and its portrayal of the ‘stalker’ Prince. During one interview, Zegler pointed out that she found the relationship between the princess and the prince to be “weird.”

She highlighted that the storyline has been altered to support a more modern message that moves beyond traditional romantic love and instead emphasizes the empowerment of women – just like Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking Barbie did in July. Unsurprisingly, Gerwig has co-written the screenplay.

Recently, Rachel Zegler who’s going to play Snow White in the upcoming Disney remake slammed the original story

“She’s not going to be saved by the prince. And she’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be, and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true,” Zegler told Variety last September.

Of course, many people took offense that Zegler is meddling with the original storyline of an animated classic. Among them was David Hand, the son of the original 1937 Snow White director who shares the same name.

“She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be,” the West Side Story actress said in an interview

The 91-year-old, who worked as a designer for Disney in the ’90s, argued that a lot of the younger generation, including Zegler, “have never seen the original” and “don’t know what they’re talking about.”

“I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it,” Hand explained to The Telegraph.

“I think it’s pathetic that people feel that way… these are art forms in the world of film today.”

In return, David Hand, the son of the original 1937 Snow White director, has come out criticizing Zegler and Disney’s “woke” remakes

“They change the stories, they change the thought processes of the characters, they just aren’t the original stories anymore,” he said

Mr. Hand also criticized Disney for trying to reinvent classical stories such as The Little Mermaid and Snow White instead of coming up with original concepts.

“They change the stories, they change the thought processes of the characters, they just aren’t the original stories anymore. They’re making up new woke things and I’m just not into any of that.

“Pick on something else… create new characters, if you’re gonna do this, but don’t destroy or try to destroy something that is a classic and is a beautiful piece”.

In fact, Mr. Hand was so displeased with the recent news regarding Disney’s remake that he believes Walt Disney and his dad “would be turning in their graves” seeing what the beloved classics are being turned into.

“Pick on something else… create new characters, if you’re gonna do this, but don’t destroy or try to destroy something that is a classic and is a beautiful piece.”

However, despite the controversy surrounding Zegler as the new Snow White, some fans defended the casting choice

According to interviews, it was a lifelong dream of Zegler’s to play Snow White on-screen

These remarks, combined with the mismatch between the actress’ skin tone and her Polish-Colombian heritage and the expectations of various online critics, resulted in Zegler’s name being swamped with somewhat racist comments condemning her casting – a situation that closely mirrors the harassment Halle Bailey, the African-American actress, encountered when she secured the lead role in The Little Mermaid.

Zegler expressed her gratitude to her fans, but she also said she no longer wants to engage with the “nonsensical discourse” surrounding her playing Snow White.

“Extremely appreciative of the love I feel from those defending me online, but please don’t tag me in the nonsensical discourse about my casting,” she tweeted in July, adding, “I really, truly do not want to see it.”

In a now-deleted Tweet, the actress also said: “yes i am snow white no i am not bleaching my skin for the role (sic).”

This is the first behind-the-scenes look at Rachel as the new Snow White

Recently, a TikTok went viral after its author heard the young actress bashing the original Snow White for not being feminist enough

@cosywithangie Just because a woman values something different, does not make her any less valuable. Some women want a career and not marriage. Some women want a marriage or family and not a job. Some women want BOTH. All are to be heard, and seen, and valued. Write stories about ALL women and depict them ALL as valuable and worthy, instead of trying to mold them into one specific image of what you deem worthy. Thank you. #snowwhite #snowwhiteliveaction #snowwhitecontroversy #disney ♬ original sound – Angie | Self Care

However, this is not the first time that Ms. Zegler didn’t come across as a fan of the film she worked on. In March, she told The Hollywood Reporter that the only reason she stepped into the role of Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods is because she “needed a job.”

Snow White is set to hit the screens in March 2024.

People were split over the controversy surrounding Rachel Zegler and Disney’s live-action remakes

Most of these stories are folktales older than Disney, Hans Christian Andersen or the Grimm brothers. They have been altered to fit the culture of whoever is telling it for centuries and probably longer.

Except for HC Andersen, sure there are some retellings, but you can't alter it too much and say that it's the same thing when we have the actual original stories in book format. His stuff is great btw. Sadly some of his best stories aren't even translated into English.

The problem is that Rachel is being anti feminist by claiming Snow has to be a leader or whatever bs she said. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to marry a prince or just be a housewife. That’s the thing about feminism, all women from all walks of lives can live as they choose. We’re all women regardless. The new far left concept of feminism destroys any idea of a traditional woman which is ironically anti feminist from what true feminism represents. That’s why a lot of fans don’t like her

The sad part is Disney did it in the padt. Frozen was meant to be an adaptation of the fairy tale The Snow Queen, but when they realised they were straying too far from the source they renamed it. There is nothing wrong with not so faithful adaptation, but don't use the original titel when you're not going to tell that story.

No, it was not a nickname, it was her name, and the reason some of us are pretty ticked at this new version using that same name. It's been a long time since I've seen the Disney movie, not sure how they cover it, but the original story starts with her mother pricking her finger on a sewing needle. Three drops of blood fall onto the snow on her black windowsill, leading her to say, "How I wish that I had a daughter that had skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony." She later dies giving birth to the girl she calls Snow White. Her name is kind of a big deal, if you ask me.

Honestly I have problem with the casting because the actress straight up said that she didn't like snow white as a character. She also acts like she thinks it's a Disney story from the start saying stuff like "this isn't the 1930's anymore" like girl that's a fkn Brother's Grimm story, I bet she hasn't even read it. Why cast someone who seems to hold nothing but contempt for the character when that character isn't supposed to be a villain or a bad person? Like Snow white ran away from an abusive home when she was what 12? 14? Survived multiple murder attempts, convinced 7 people that she was worth keeping around and ran their entire household, and the actress said that she was a weak damsel in distress, like sure she needed some help, but she's a kid, what did people expect. The actress also talks about love like it's a terribly bad thing that's only there to make women weak, and said that her snow white "doesn't need or dream about true love", what's wrong with loving someone?

The Brothers Grimm collected folk tales and wrote them down with some adjustments. In an earlier draft, the evil queen was the mother of Snow White, but they thought it too dark. Disney made some huge adjustments to the Grimm fairy tale, so it's rather amusing that some folks are now clutching their pearls that Disney is literally doing the same thing again in 2023 - taking liberties with the original material. A really cool movie is Snow White: a Tale of Terror (1997) with Sigourney Weaver.

If you're going to make Snow White - which in itself is a bad an idea of any life action remake of an animated movie - just stick to the story or make a different story with a different name. The actress isn't the problem, the story is.

disney should go balls the the wall insane and "retell" these stories in the original way they were written. the SA of sleeping beauty, the true death of the evil queen in snow white , and they should do even darker tales like Bluebeard and The Maiden Without Hands. go big or go home.

He obviously never read the original Brothers Grimm stories or the others that Walt "borrowed" for his films. The Pinocchio story (written as a newspaper serial) originally had the puppet stomp on his cricket friend for being too critical of him.

They already went power player Snow White in the Snow White and the Huntsman movie, why get excited about doing it again in yet another butchering of the original story? Is there no original thought available any more? Can we not make new stories In historical settings with new heroines with original agenda's if that's what the audience craves? It's a medi evil but mythical world, it can be vast enough for an entirely new bunch of characters without disturbing the tales already told right?

I don't see any problem with the casting. She's going to be a lovely Snow White. The problem is that the story is deeply altered it's not the story of Snow White anymore. They should make a SW 2, a prequel or the story of the little sister of SW or make a new character. This is the same as the problem with the new little mermaid: she is a beautiful little mermaid, but she should not be called Ariel.

I hate those changes because they're so ridiculously obvious marketing plots to avoid making real changes. No you can't make SnowWhite into a POC, because then she isn't SnowWhite anymore. Her being white as snow is giving her the name. And most ridiculous were the people ironically comparing her to Black Swan. No Black Swan wasn't named for her skin colour but the colour of her dress. That's why she could be played by any actress who's good enough to play the role. If you want a black princess, either chose a story where the skin colour isn't mentioned or, what an idea, make a new one! Maybe even let a black writer create it! But then you'd actually have to pay decent money to a black person and 'clutch pearls' tell a relevant and modern story. I hate the little mermaid remake, not because the actress is black, but because she's only black so they could leave the story unchanged instead of going back to the original story which was much more progressive than the film.

The original Grimm stories were always on the dark side and probably, as written, not right for very young children. The original Disney films will always be available to everyone. The more recent live action remakes are fine as they stand. Could Mr. Hand and others decrying the remakes be just a little racist in their criticisms because Ariel and Snow White are portrayed by women of color?

The original story dates back hundreds of years and comes from various stories being told, retold and mashed together and retold again and again. The Disney version isn’t the definitive version. Get over yourself. Disney remove the core of the story, Disneyfy what’s left behind, make it into some bland and weak version of its former self and then market it to the masses. They’ve been doing that to some great stories for decades. Disney wrecks almost everything it touches. Look up the original tales behind your favourite Disney film and then tell me the Disney version has depth and meaning, it won’t because Disney have removed the soul and made it bland.

I'm so tired of people throwing around the word "woke". I mean, it does help me identify them as someone I don't ever want to have a conversation with, but half the time it's used when there's nothing really that progressive with what they're referring to, and the other half of the time it's just their racism rearing its ugly head. Either way, it makes me sad when someone stoops to that.

I'm not surprised Hand is throwing a fit. Andrea Caselotti, the voice of Snow White, wasn't credited for her role. She was underpaid. She even had to sneak into the premiere. On top of it, Disney stopped her from taking on several other roles. His Daddy profited off her voice. And now a woman wants to make the story about female empowerment? Scandalous! Of course, Disney edited quite a lot out of the original story, but when men make changes, Hand is presumably okay with it.

I have a great idea, let's get together a whole bunch of has beens, used to bes, wanna bes, never will bes, and remake all kinds of "old timey" films. It's just about time The Three Faces of Eve got a face lift. Who else would like to hear Meghan Markle say "fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride"? Write some original material, perhaps modeled after the old stuff, but set in the 21st century. Snow White? Nope, Leaf Green set in a toxic waste dump. Toxic waste sounds like a great deal of the stuff coming out in movie form right now anyway. I'll probably get down voted for this rant so let's go for broke, let's tar and feather the next person who beats this "woke" drum.

Aren't there laws about changing an authors work? These are not Disney original stories. Just make your own stuff and stop messing with classic literature. Just remember...Go Woke...Go Broke!!! I guess Disney has run out of original ideas and have to change other authors work to suit their Wokeness. The 'actress' ... well I guess you would call her that, but she is just as Woke as the company that hired her. They can all go broke. Will never watch another thing by Disney. They have gone waaay down that very dark path to the Dark Side. I won't even watch a favorite because of them...sorry Harrison, but I have to pass on the new Indiana Jones movie too. Nothing Disney...no parks, no merchandise, no movies and no tv channels.
