It's funny you say that. One of my friends was Christopher Rush, the artist that created Black Lotus for Magic the Gathering cards. His father would tell him he was wasting his time with that "art stuff" and that he'd never make any money on it. When Chris started out with Wizards of the Coast, they paid him some cash and the rest in stock options. When MTG took off and became popular, he made a lot of money. He was also offered an opportunity to do art for a video game. When he called his mother and told her his earnings were to be $600k for the job, she said "my God..that's more than your father makes!" He's since passed away, but a recent auction of his Black Lotus Card (alpha, mint condition) sold for $10k. Proof that art can make you money!
