Anya Taylor-Joy’s captivating performance as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit has been leaving fans, critics, and first-time viewers glued to the screens. But recently, the 24-year-old beauty has revealed she has been struggling to fit Hollywood beauty standards.

Anya told The Sun that “I have never and I don’t think I will ever think of myself as beautiful.” She also said that “it sounds pathetic and my boyfriend warns me people will think I’m an absolute d*** for saying these things,” but she still insists that she’s “weird-looking.”

The stunning actress was first discovered by the legendary model scout Sarah Doukas outside London’s Harrods shopping center. Sarah signed the 16-year-old Anya up to the Storm modeling agency, which opened a way to the world of acting. Despite that, the star is still working on accepting herself the way she is: “I have made it a practice in my life to not turn down compliments.”

The Queen’s Gambit’s star recently confessed that she is “too weird-looking” and “not beautiful enough to be in films”

The American-Argentine-British actress said she always felt different when growing up. “I was too English to be Argentine, too Argentine to be English, too American to be anything,” she told The Sun.

The peer pressure was hard during school years. “The kids just didn’t understand me in any shape or form. I used to get locked in lockers.”

Anya revealed that she felt very separated and lonely. “I was so lonely as a kid. I felt so isolated that I created this story in my head about lonely was bad, being alone was bad.” Thus, she said she “spent a lot of time in school crying in bathrooms.”

Anya also said that when it comes to the movies she’s starred in, “I won’t go to the cinema to watch my own film.” Instead, she said she’ll watch it before. “The beauty of being in your own skin is that you don’t have to look at your own face.”

Even though Anya dreamt of acting since she was 6, she always has had an idea that she is not beautiful enough to star on the camera in the back of her mind.

As she filmed this year’s movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma,” she thought the role didn’t quite represent her.

“I genuinely had a panic attack on Emma because I thought, ‘I am the first ugly Emma and I can’t do this,’ because the first line in the movie is, ‘I’m handsome, clever and rich.’”

But despite Anya’s insistence that “I have never and I don’t think I will ever think of myself as beautiful,” her unique ethereal looks and incredible talent prove the contrary.

I know, right. She might meant no harm with her "confession", but to me what she said didn't match with her penchant to upload selfies on social media. Humble brag at its finest.

She is too young to realize... Hon, you don't help people by claiming you think you look "weird". It's never ever good for anyone to publicly talk anything negative about their own looks, especially young, gorgeous famous people. It just makes other people, young girls mostly, feel even more bad about themselves. Women are far too much appreciated by looks alone. We should just love ourselves no matter what, this body is all we got for this life. Claiming you are "ugly", "weird" or whatever, when actually you are objectively gorgeous, and have so many great photos to prove, does not make you relatable, it makes you look like you are fishing for compliments. I admit, she might have some insecurities, as we all do sometimes, but it's not good practice for famous woman to send message she is not "pretty enough", it's not good for her fans too. Message should be better as "I know I look a bit unusual, but I love it!"

This post has basically taken her words out of context from multiple interviews and slapped them together with her social media pics, making it look like she went on a shallow rant about her appearance for attention. And wow, people in the comments are so mean.

She is completely weird looking. Who cares? For some people she is beautiful, and for others she is ugly. It doesn't matter. It shouldn't matter. She is a really interesting actor. That's what matters. That's what should matter. It's time we stopped judging women's worth entirely on their attractiveness to men.

People don't talk about me enough, so I'm going to say something negative about myself to get more attention Also claiming to be weird looking and not beautiful enough while also doing numerous photoshoots, I mean, do I really have to explain even?

This kind of just shows that no matter what one looks like, every person can only see "flaws" in their looks.

Kind of understand what she is saying, but she is overstating. She reminds me of Natalie Dormer, with the noticeably wide set eyes and narrow mouth. I suppose it could be a bit harder to get some roles if you don't look relatable or if some see your looks as distracting.

Enough of these celebrities who make millions of dollars based largely on their looks and then frame their life as a daily struggle due to their insecurities. If you are that insecure, leave the industry, get a job at Walmart and leave us alone. You're all ugly on the inside.

The Queens Gambit is truly a great show. A well written story, beautifully shot and great young actors. She is an amazing actress, despite the fact that she is looking for compliments on social media. I do hope to see more of her acting.

Actually, I think that she's been under the spotlight for a very long time, and when that happens you do feel ugly. even if someone is fishing, it still means they feel bad about themselves. I think it's really sad when truly radiant people never see their own light, so goddamn it, I think we should praise her. god knows that we all wish that someone told us we were beautiful from time to time. don't be so bitter. support her.

To all the people blasting her, it's possible that she does have a type of body dysmorphic disorder. Even though we see her as one thing (in this case subjectively lovely) what she sees in herself may be very very different. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/body-dysmorphic-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20353938

Surely people with this condition and as the article states 'Your perceived flaw and the repetitive behaviors cause you significant distress, and impact your ability to function in your daily life' would make a career in front of the cameras rather difficult? She also says she makes it a practice not to turn down compliments - does that go with this? People can accept that they are weird looking and yet very attractive but not think of themselves as conventionally beautiful. Her wording is very careful. With this actor I think it's possible that she's just needy of compliments because of her childhood and so still seeks validation despite the fact that everything in her life shouts that she is considered attractive by most. That doesn't make her a bad person but, as hobbity mentions above, imagine how actual ugly people feel?

SHUT UP!!! I've had enough of everyone who says she's just saying it to get some compliments! SHe isn't "fishing" for compliments! There are plenty of these "kind of people" who think they are ugly, and then others out there who think that same person might be beautiful! She's a real f*****g person, who has REAL feelings, just like we do! She is a celebrity, but she's also a goddamn PERSON. She is literally like every other person who says they're weird, who says they're ugly, except she just happens to be famous! So what, every other person who says they're weird is just depressed, or sad, so you should take pity on them, right? But that makes Anya a selfish person just doing it for some likes, compliments. Well, this surely doesn't look like a compliment section to me. Get over yourselves.

Whatever her angle is, I guess it’s believable but it doesn’t really matter anymore. There’s no such thing as ugly - only broke. Skincare alone can transform a face. If you’re ugly and rich, it’s just because you’re an asśhole.
