Out of everything you can find out about your partner, a long-time secret affair is probably the most devastating.

Reddit user Horror_Squash4757 recently made a post on r/AITA_WIBTA_PUBLIC, sharing the way he supposedly learned about his wife and her colleague. What began as a subtle shift in her behavior—longer phone use and “overtime” at work—led to a cascade of revelations, including secret trips and a shared apartment.

After he publicly confronted her, the man left with a heavy bag of emotions, as well as doubts about whether his actions crossed a line. So he asked the internet to help him make sense of the whole ordeal.

People cheat for all sorts of reasons, but the signs might be different

A wide variety of factors can lead someone to have an affair. However, a 2020 study suggests that the eight key reasons are: anger, low self-esteem, lack of love, low commitment, need for variety, neglect, sexual desire, and circumstance.

Additionally, a 2018 study looking at personality traits discovered that women who ranked high in “neuroticism” and men who ranked higher in “narcissism” were more likely to cheat on their partners.

There can be many signs that your significant other is unfaithful to you, but psychotherapist Bhavna Raithatha said that changing phone habits can, indeed, be a red flag.

Raithatha acknowledges that it can be difficult to tell what constitutes ‘excessive’ phone use given the online world we live in, “but unfortunately, if they’re spending so much extra time on them to the point where they’re paying no attention to their partner whatsoever, this should start to ring the alarm bells.”

“Partners who have been cheated on have later often said, they felt like ‘clearly there’s something or somebody much more important than I am.’ The biggest telltale sign is hiding their phone all of a sudden or putting a pin on their phone,” the psychotherapist explained.

“For instance, last week they left it lying around on the table pinging away happily but now it’s welded to their back pocket. Or if they listened to things or called people on loudspeaker but now it’s hushed voices. What they’re doing is shutting their life down, layer by layer by layer, from their current partner.”

“Affairs don’t just suddenly happen, it’s a multi-step process,” she said.

Every case is different, but Rick Reynolds, LCSW, who is the founder and president of Affair Recovery, said it takes at least two years for the shock waves of the infidelity to subside. So, extremes aside, it’s difficult to blame someone for their initial reaction to it.

Yeah, this all happened recently bur he's been undergoing therapy to get better - at most he's had time to find/book 1 session. He watched this apartment, from "a couple blocks away", how does he *know* they're renting this place? No mention of finding a rental deed. Affairs started 4 years ago, longer than both kids, so everyone at work knows she's married, pregnant, *and* stepping out with a colleague?!?! The whole things reads like a paranoid fantasy

A public scene doesn't help the custody argument. Although there doesn't seem to be any grounds mentioned that would support full custody to either parent. The marriage is over, it's now about how to make the transition as easy on the kids as possible, public lashing out isn't helping. Hopefully therapist covers that. Its not that wife didn't deserve the dramatic gesture, it's just not smart, and makes the case to give her primary custody stronger, if OP can't control his emotions and goes to great lengths to exact some revenge.

To the YTA brigade, she was publicly flaunting her affair and completely ripping apart a family. It's not revenge and she deserved to have her affair out in the open and actually those who worked with her probably knew about it. She's disgusting! Reap what you sow! NTA OP and ignore those YTAs because they're the type who have, would and will do exactly what OPs wife did. No-one in their right mind would say you were wrong. Good luck OP and just get those lovely children's DNA! I have a feeling they're yours though, but have it confirmed.

I see a lot of old Judge Judy episodes where people contact someone's workplace to tell them about misbehaviour. This isn't something I'd ever contemplate doing - does it happen anywhere else but the US? I would say that work and private life are separate; unless they're doing something illegal that affects their work (eg embezzling, selling secrets) why is it the workplace's business if they're having an affair? It seems ridiculously vindictive. Keep private things private.

They would leave that work place hand in hand! They probably all know and she's disgusting behaving like this annnnnd having another child with OP during this affair. He owes her nothing! Leave her belongings where these two POS started their affair! And they have their own place! WTF is wrong with people like you that you are not understanding of what she's done to an entire family, that you have ANY sympathy for someone like her? If this was a man doing the dirty on his wife, you'd be expressing something completely different 100%

This is probably fake, but still, we're it real, what those people expect a dna test to accomplish? Will the man disown the kids that love him because one of the two cells that made them wasn't "his"?

I'll get downvoted for this, but he shouldn't have firebombed the life of his children's mother - no matter how much she deserved it. When you have kids, you have to think of them first. Presumably the couple will share parenting expenses after the divorce - why would you threaten the mother's income and career? Kids deserve as stable a life as possible after divorce, and doing anything drastic to mess up their mother's stability will affect that of the kids too. Divorce proceedings are guaranteed to be messy now, and more expensive - again, the children will indirectly pay a price for it.

Oh really? Well she sure didn't think about the kids when she was out being a dirty slutt. I'll slutt shame any women that cheats on her family. When you cheat you don't just cheat on your spouse you're cheating on your children too, blowing up their family for a meaningless piece of asss. She made her affair quite public, so what's wrong with him making their breakup public too? She deserves the consequences of her disgusting actions

If it's non-fiction and OP wants full custody of both children then DNA testing is very much contraproductive. If they turn out not being his then I'm sure he won't be granted even 50% custody.

If you believe these posts are fictitious, why read them?
