This Student’s Powerful Photo Series Inspired By Brock Turner’s Release Will Make You Think

When Brock Turner, a former student at Stanford University in California, was sentenced in June 2016 to only six months for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, many people were understandably outraged. And they were even more angry when Turner was released on September 2nd after serving only half of his already meagre sentence.

In response to this miscarriage of justice, Yana Mazurkevich, a 20-year-old student at Ithaca College in New York, decided to create the photo series you can see below. The project, titled “It Happened”, was made for a sexual assault awareness media platform called Current Solutions, and as you can see, the message is pretty powerful. As Mazurkevich wrote on her Facebook page, “In response to Brock Turner’s early release, this photo series aims to continue the conversation on sexual assault, As well as to raise a huge finger to Turner and his 3-month jail time.”

Richard Petch : you're the one who should have his face smashed. You're disgusting. You sound like one of those rappist saying that their victim wanted it. You should never have to smash someone's face. Just saying 'NO' 1 time should be enough to stop anything. And if it doesn't stop you agressor, it's highly possible that you just can't fight. So what, will you tell every person raped by someone stronger than themselves that they wanted it because they didn't fight him/her?

John Smith: where do you see that the Asian guy is not stronger than the black guy? Nowhere. I don't know what you peant behind this comment but there is definitely somthing wrong with you. As for the uncomfortable part, yes, these pictures make people uncomfortable if they have any common sense and understand the meaning of what is happening. If you're not uncomfortable with this then you have a serious problem, and so might have every woman unfortunately crossing your path...

:( I wish they would stop associating any kind of university or sports with him. He is a RAPIST. HE IS THE STANFORD RAPIST. That's it, who cares if he can swim or he studied at a well-known university? He RAPED someone and was released early from prison for some reason, and this is why this title should follow him for the rest of his life. Someone should catch him an tattoo "STANFORD RAPIST" all over his face.

Rape is a crime, I don't think we can teach anyone not to do it. We've been teaching that killing and stealing is a crime, but still that happens. I think there must be stricter laws for crimes, so people would be afraid to do it.

I've been there before. The aftermath of it does not feel good at all. You just feel like ending your own life. Although I have overcome that "I blame myself for it happening" stage, I still find it hard to talk to new people, men especially. I know not all are the same, it's very daunting trying to get to know new people.

Such a shame that some of the below comments STILL show such ignorance. "Oh, the back guy would have punched the Asian guy in real life"... no, you have no idea, no clue, no thought process of how these things manifest and how they happen and how powerful an attacker suddenly becomes when they want something badly enough. Don't forget also, the artist has asked all the staged victims to look vacant, to convey they're not really present when these nasty things happen to them I will always believe a rape victim even if it were a 6" boxer who was raped by a teeny tiny person. I will be just as angry towards someone making a false rape accusation but you must first have trust. It happens, so unexpectedly, believe me, it ruined ten years of my life. I know.

I'm really late to this, but I'm researching for an article so here we go. Stop f*****g around. Rape is a huge crime, and should 110% be taken seriously. Rape is not some joke. "Unexpected sex"? "Drunken messing around"? Please stop. This is not a f*****g joke. Rape, sexual assault, harassment, are all terribly scarring crimes, and releasing Brock Turner, aka the Stanford Rapist, was wrong in so many ways. This should not be taken lightly. Your race, gender, social status, weight, height, NOTHING F*****G MATTERS. IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE. So, for God's sake, stop being immature and insensitive about this. If you decide to, no offense, but you're a s****y a*****e who needs to learn some respect. *excuse my french

May I suggest a (not too recent) book that's right to the point? Jon Krakauer's "Missoula: Rape and the justice system in a college town". The book details several cases of young women students being abused/raped on campus by football players, but what it highlights in terms of the justice system's shortcomings are spot on for the Brock Turner case. The pictures here are splendid in all their horror and show that both genders are concerned. Brilliant and courageous!

Unfortunately it is impossible to control the perception of these images by other people, and there will be those - probably many, many more than would ever admit to it - who will find these images pornographic or sexually arousing. There are people in real life who would never commit rape or act sexually without consent or allow such activity against themselves or others, who still fantasize about the idea of engaging in spontaneous, unexpected sexual activity with a stranger, either as the initiator or the subject, in a way which, if it happened in real life, would be rape. (I am advised not to call these rape fantasies, and so I shall not: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolution-the-self/201411/don-t-call-them-rape-fantasies) These people need to take this series' message to heart as much as anybody, but they are not likely to do so if they are made to feel from its presentation that their fantasy life already incriminates them. It doesn't.

The best maneuver in an ambush is never to get yourself in a situation where you will get ambushed. Ladies take care of your selves, there are lots of crazy people out there. Do not place your self in a disadvantageous situation. Always exercise situational awareness.

Sadly, there is no such thing as a situation that is 100% guaranteed to be safe. I've heard stories where men/women were simply leaving the store building and a random person approached them as they left the store, forcing them into a hidden place where they got assaulted. Even the most normal and daily activities can be dangerous. And sometimes you can't fight back if the attacker is too powerful.

John Smith, 1st, I'm fairly certain Igor was NOT being sarcastic. He & Kjorn are saying essentially the same thing: there are so many ways of getting sexually violated & they are glad the photo essayist attempted to include a wide variety. 2nd, I'm going to assume you have never been sexually violated---it is when someone exerts control & overwhelming power against another's will. When the ugly act is over, the victim does feel vacant & curses her/his self for being so damn helpless, but does eventually learn (s)he is not to blame, (s)he did not do this to her/his self, some other bastard did & the assailant should pay significantly! And the victim does survive! Have some respect, Mr John Smith.

as many of those photos are women, just wanted to share my point of view - i come from czech rep, live in germany (50-100km away from my birth town). Many women think it's ok to dress seducingly even if going out as collegues, i guess it might be subconconscious perhaps. But many take even fun in teasing you, many try to get affection, favours or help just while trying to use their feminine side. I've learnt how to stay inert, in order to stay but to be honest, sometimes i want to punch those women in the face. sometimes with a chair....to be protective and giving somebody a special treatment, when he is just making your life hell and therefore not punching them in the face would be ....sexist. unfortunately only women turn me on ...so ...
