This Student’s Powerful Photo Series Inspired By Brock Turner’s Release Will Make You Think

When Brock Turner, a former student at Stanford University in California, was sentenced in June 2016 to only six months for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, many people were understandably outraged. And they were even more angry when Turner was released on September 2nd after serving only half of his already meagre sentence.

In response to this miscarriage of justice, Yana Mazurkevich, a 20-year-old student at Ithaca College in New York, decided to create the photo series you can see below. The project, titled “It Happened”, was made for a sexual assault awareness media platform called Current Solutions, and as you can see, the message is pretty powerful. As Mazurkevich wrote on her Facebook page, “In response to Brock Turner’s early release, this photo series aims to continue the conversation on sexual assault, As well as to raise a huge finger to Turner and his 3-month jail time.”

Richard Petch : you're the one who should have his face smashed. You're disgusting. You sound like one of those rappist saying that their victim wanted it. You should never have to smash someone's face. Just saying 'NO' 1 time should be enough to stop anything. And if it doesn't stop you agressor, it's highly possible that you just can't fight. So what, will you tell every person raped by someone stronger than themselves that they wanted it because they didn't fight him/her?

Really strong and powerful pictures. They succeeded in both being uncomfortable and informative in a balanced way.

John Smith: where do you see that the Asian guy is not stronger than the black guy? Nowhere. I don't know what you peant behind this comment but there is definitely somthing wrong with you. As for the uncomfortable part, yes, these pictures make people uncomfortable if they have any common sense and understand the meaning of what is happening. If you're not uncomfortable with this then you have a serious problem, and so might have every woman unfortunately crossing your path...
