Phone Scammers Accidentally Call A Programmer, Regret It Immediately

Phone scams may be getting more and more clever by the day, but one office full of phony IRS agents made a decidedly dumb move when they called a computer programmer who happens to specialize in scam prevention.

The programmer and Redditor, who goes by the username YesItWasDataMined, but operates an anti-scam operation called Project Mayhem, received a voicemail from someone claiming to be an IRS employee. When he called them back and was asked to pay a massive fine for unclear reasons, he knew immediately that he was being had – and came up with a genius way to pull the plug on them. He wrote a script that called each of their phones 28 times per second with an automated message, tying up their lines and making it impossible to reach other potential victims.

The actual IRS recently published a report declaring these kinds of schemes a “major threat to taxpayers,” and estimates that over 10 thousand victims have been affected since 2013, collectively being defrauded of more than 54 million dollars.

Project Mayhem’s official YouTube channel now proudly features a hilarious 10-minute sample of the havoc wreaked upon the unfortunate scammers, which has already gained over 1 million views. Watch it below, and always remember to protect yourself against any suspicious requests for your private information.

More info: Project Mayhem

At 8:25, he said "he's calling us from 10 to 15 numbers at the same time, the [call] waiting list is full of his numbers, he must be one of those guys with tattoos, yeah, that place is full of guys with tattoos (wtf??)" Hindi is not my native language, so this translation might not be accurate, but I tried to get as close as I can. :)

Brilliant! I am from India, and when the last such scam was revealed a few months ago I was shocked to know this used to happen from the same city I live in. I was happy that it was finally unearthed and these good-for-nothing scamsters were finally being caught. Sad to know, it's still on. But what you did is just brilliant. More power to you! :)

Thank You for doing this. My 24 yr old daughter actually had taken out $3,000.00 from her account before she called her dad and I and we told her it was a scam. It took her a bit to calm down and realize she needed to talk to someone before she sent off the money. I had actually gotten this call and they kept calling me to tell me the cops were coming to get me. I finally got mad enough and yelled at them after several days to send the police I am home waiting for them. You are my hero!!

Because they really don't care about us as long as they are getting their money from the PAC's. On a non political serious note, these places are over seas, so the US government can't do anything, and there are so many that the government in India doesn't have the manpower or the funds to go after these guys. It seems to be the same group of people, that do ALL of the scams, so far I only seem to get the Windows support calls.

People such as the elderly, and those who are afraid of the IRS. What a lowlife, scumbag thing to do to people.

On behalf of them, I being an Indian , I apologise for these brazen wrongdoings by these perpetrators. Offensive and legal actions must be charged against these people. Now I can understand how a Muslim person feels when he is seen with a suspicion, just because a terrorist and them shares same religion. It's my embarrassment that has led me to write this comment here as I can see no one offending or cursing my country, till now. So please don't generalise the whole country just because of these scammers and yes DO NOT DHARE ANY INFORMATION OVER A PHONE CALL. NEVER EVER. Ask for everything in writing. Apologies again. *Peace*

Priceless! I received a similar call today, not from the IRS, but from the Ventura County Sheriffs Office. The caller introduced himself as Sheriff "something" and started to ask me why I did not appear in court yesterday. I heard background noises such as one would hear in a "boiler room" operation and knew that this was one of the scams going around last year. I recognized it as bogus, stated "Bu!!sh*t!" into the phone and hung up. Followed up with local police to add to their fraud hot line information. If Project Mayhem is monitoring these comments, the number that called me appeared as 805.217.4024. I don't know if that is a fake Caller ID or not a valid number that goes back to the scammer. If you can determine it is a scammer's number, please feel free to attack it. Also, is there anyway to commercialize what you do. I think that it is brilliant.

Sherrie: The problem is that the elderly get upset and confused and forget what they learned. I have an older friend who is living on really low income. She got a phone call from 'her grandson' claiming he had been arrested and to wire him 2000. but don't tell his parents. She went to the bank and took out 2000. The teller even asked if she was sure it was her grandson and she said yes. Goodbye 2000.

So much better than what I do. I got a call, quickly googled the number, and saw it was a tech support scam, which even gave me a partial script of what they say so I answered the phone, "Thank you for calling Microsoft. We've detected a virus on your computer and will need to access it remotely to solve the problem." Silence for 10 seconds then a, "Thank you," and a hangup. I called the number back, and the same person answered (surprised it wasn't spoofed), and I got more insistent. "Ma'am, I don't think you understand! There's a virus on your computer..." *hangup* Repeated until she finally blocked me. For another scam, I just keep giving them a fake credit card number over and over, making excuses for not being able to read it right - bad eyesight, one of the 8's looked like a 0, etc. until they get pissed at me. You, though, are much cooler.

I got one of these and demanded to know what his 'silo' number was. Then I said you can't be an employee or you would know which silo you were in. I am a senior analyst at the IRS and I certainly know what my silo is. And then he threatened me and I said hang on, my husband wants to talk to you. He is a lawyer with the IRS. The guy hung up. I picked up the word silo from the business pages.

These scum bags called my very elderly mother and I answered. They ran through their "you owe IRS money and place are headed over to arrest you" bit. I decided to have some fun. I responded with many questions about how confused I was because the "nice man at H and R Block said I was getting a refund of $563.00" they kept trying to steer me back by saying I was confused. I asked him to let me speak to his manager, who then came on the line, and I told him "how annoyed I was that I haven't received my refund yet" and "could he please find out where it was and how much longer before I'd be getting it". He got so mad and then hung up. We've never had another call. LOL LOL LOL

Thank you. While caring for seniors in their homes I'd have to answer the phones. They receive calls like this multiple times a day, trying to steal from people with cognitive impairments on fixed incomes. It's horrible. I'd either tell them directly that we don't accept solicitations or scams or I'd just set the phone down and let them hang up after figuring out I wasn't there anymore (wasting their time). If they argued with me, I'd also just set down the phone. Wish I could've had this done to them.

This number came in a pop up, the pop up is like a Microsoft warning that your computer has been infected and you need to call this number inmidiately, don't close this message or your computer will be disconnected from the internet for the safety of Microsofts netwerk. I've called the number and the accent was the same as the scammers in this video. Also the same accent as a man who ones called me and told me he was an employee from Microsoft and told me my computer was infected. He wanted me to give him acces to my computer and he would fix it for me, he wanted me to install software so he could get in from behind his desk. Both times I hanged up the phone and didn't give them what they wanted. This is the number from the pop up: 085.2085308 and this is the like from the pop up: https://gr-th-59.s3.amazonaws.com/vbhnb/ts-chrome-engnew24/index.htm?n=085-208-5308&error= If a someone reads this and can take them out, be my guest!

I love it! lol... It's almost as much fun as messing with those scammers who call and say they are "Windows Support" and that you have a virus. Every time they call, I do something different. My best are just saying over and over "Is it safe?" (watch the Marathon Man if you dont get this one. And my all time favorite is answering with "NSA Field Office 34, We have locked in your number, and you are accessing a secure line illegally." My most fun one is just letting them do their schpeel, switching to a heavy italian/chicago accent and telling them I'm sending down my cousin Vinny to have a chat with them.... That one never gets old.

Saying things such as " I don't understand what he's saying" (referring to your recording) and "I am getting the same thing every time I call." There are also a few curse words thrown in there. THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS!!!!!!

This is so wonderful!! While I don;t fall for these things, I particularly hate the one claiming to be calling from "Windows" , I wish I could do this to them. Just because I know better, I know lots of elderly people that will fall for this stuff ;( I usually string them for awhile and then ask if their Mother knows that they make a living cheating/scamming elderly people out of their savings...

As someone who received this call twice in the last few weeks, I'm glad someone did something about it. Thank you so much :) I'm an Indian studying in the US, and I obviously recognized the Indian accent right away but I thought maybe the IRS outsourced the grunt work like this to Indian call centers so for a while I kind of thought it might be real, although I was pretty much in disbelief the whole time. During the call, I googled about it and saw that the IRS never asks you to pay up immediately like that. The funniest part was when they asked me to pay in Walmart / CVS gift cards or something, and I actually laughed. They said two police officers would be coming to arrest me in 45 minutes if I didn't pay up. I told them I'll take my chances and went back to sleep. The Hindi is mostly swearing, not anything worth translating.

Bless you! I have friends who are recently arrived refugees. This was their first year here and first year paying taxes. Shortly after, they got one of these calls. Their daughter was suspicious enough that she called me for advice--but only after she had already given the scammers their debit card number. So I hightailed it across town to help explain (easier in person) and call the bank to cancel their card. Then called the scammers and gave them a substantial piece of my mind. You are a hero and this was deeply satisfying!

Also, when I get a robo call selling c**p from duct cleaning to what ever, I ALWAYS make an appointment for them to come by my house located MILES from civilization so I can personally tell them I did not appreciate thier robocalls. I love it but I am jealous.... when I get these calls I too jam their lines but only one call at a time using my Google voice number. When they call I ride their asses as hard as I can....which gives me some relief in a tough day. What we need is a central location to report such numbers so programmers like this can take them out instead of having to wait until the scammers happen to call him.

I had this type of scam call from my purported power company threatening to turn off my business's power for non-payment. Since I'm on auto-pay, I knew this was a scam. I told them I needed to go to the bank to get some information before I could pay and could I call them back. Then I gave their number to the power company and the fraud division of my local police, after which I called them back. They asked if I had my account information and I said, "I'd rather give you the number for the fraud division of my police department, since they now know about your scam." He hung up rather quickly.

Just got a similar call today from the "local sheriff's office" saying that I had missed appearing in court yesterday. I heard background noise like a "boiler room" and knew it was a bogus call. As the caller started down his script, I said. "Bu!!sh*t!" and hung up. Called the local police to report the fraud. If Project Mayhem is monitoring these comments, you can attack this number in California - 805.517.4024. I would like to share with you the phone numbers that I get calls from so you can do this to them. I have had far too many. I applaud your efforts. How can I submit phone numbers to you (which I assume you would call to check that I was not giving you a valid number before inflicting this denial on)?

I'm very curious on the programming behind the 'multiple phone numbers' as I'm guessing the person running this wonderful public service doesn't have 10 (? I tried to count) different numbers at his disposal. I have a feeling that the answer is unlikely to be posted publicly. I'll just keep learning. What would take this a level up is if the recording offered postings for other potential jobs - I have a feeling a lot of people who are only doing this in the hopes of earning a tiny salary will be completely out of work soon. But there really isn't any way to protect 'the public at large' and 'the unfortunate people working at scam centers for lack of other options' at the same time.

Superb.. There are hundreds of scam call centres in India. I support your actions to stop those lying & cheating jerks. There are the famous windows scam, the antivirus scam and survey scam.

Holy c**p. I received a phone call just today from automated system claiming to be the IRS and demanding I call some 516 number. I knew it was a scam, I reported the number on a few websites. I'm an asterisk VoIP admin and I truly considered having one of my servers flood their 516 number. It's hilariously ironic that hours later I find a post where somebody has actually done it. Good job, I guess now I won't have to hehe.

I've noticed you used your public API that you use to make the phone calls and as far as I can remember it was payed. I wonder how much this revenge endevour has cost you?

Just got a similar call today from the "local sheriff's office" saying that I had missed appearing in court yesterday. I heard background noise like a "boiler room" and knew it was a bogus call. As the caller started down his script, I said. "Bu!!sh*t!" and hung up. Called the local police to report the fraud. If Project Mayhem is monitoring these comments, you can attack this number in California - 805.517.4024. Also, is there anyway of commercializing what you do to take it right back to these scammers!?!?!

I would like to share with you the phone numbers that I get calls from so you can do this to them. I have had far too many. I applaud your efforts. How can I submit phone numbers to you (which I assume you would call to check that I was not giving you a valid number before inflicting this denial on)?

Marvelous! The only complaint I have is now I don't get to mess with them, when they call me. But that is fine.

Too bad video quality is not good enough for reading the code. I can see you are using twilio for calling service, but would be cool to see the code. It is C# if I can see correctly? :)

The scammers that we get in my area don't even go through the amount of effort these 'IRS agents' do. They just come right out and ask for your credit card number

This one is better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du6acZ-PZQ8 the guy cries on the phone saying his supervisor will kill him begging the scambaiter to unbrick it. But hell I love all videos where these lowlifes get their dues.
