“What Is Wrong With You?”: Pregnant Woman Finally Snaps At MIL, Husband Helps Out

Pregnancy can be a time full of ups and downs: the glow is accompanied by breakouts, the joy of becoming a parent is meshed with back or feet pains, and the motivation to eat healthy is disrupted by a surprisingly strong craving for pickles with chocolate or some other delicacy.

For this redditor’s wife, Melody, it wasn’t some weird combination of foods she was craving; all she wanted was some rotisserie chicken. However, her MIL thought she shouldn’t be eating that while pregnant and threw it away, starting a family feud and putting her son—Melody’s husband—in the middle.

Pregnancy cravings can take shape in the most random combinations of food or unexpected dishes

All this woman was craving was some good old rotisserie chicken, but her MIL interfered and swapped it for a salad

Many expectant mothers experience food cravings during their pregnancy

Waiting for an addition to the family is an exciting time, even with all the ups and downs of pregnancy, which often include food-related conundrums, such as cravings. One of the worst things about them is that they are typically sudden, and considering that emotions tend to run high during pregnancy, it can lead to situations that need to be neutralized quickly—be it providing pickles and ice cream or whatever random foods the mom-to-be wants at that moment.

While cravings tend to differ from person to person, the majority of expectant moms seemingly mostly desire something sweet. This was found by a survey carried out by BabyCenter, which revealed that 40% of them wanted sweets, roughly a third wanted salty treats, spicy foods came in third with around 17% respondents saying that’s what they craved, and sour foods like green apples or sour candy were reportedly the go-to for one-in-ten pregnant women.

While the exact causes of such desire for specific foods remain unclear, somewhere between 50 and 90% of women in the US reportedly experience cravings during pregnancy—from olives on cheesecake to a diet consisting of processed-cheese sandwiches only (as shared by some of BabyCenter’s respondents).

It’s important for pregnant women to follow certain dietary guidelines

While not all cravings are necessarily unhealthy, some can be considered cheat meals among those who follow a healthy lifestyle. However, if such instances are occasional and do not entail consuming items that are on the don’ts list for pregnant women, they might not be the end of the world; everything in moderation is a set phrase for a reason.

Needless to say, eating healthy during pregnancy is crucial for the well-being of both the mom-to-be and the baby. According to the Office Of Disease Prevention And Health Promotion (OASH), following a healthy diet means meeting not only the nutrient requirements (by including whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein, among other things) but a necessary number of calories, too.

OSHA pointed out that women with a healthy pre-pregnancy weight should aim to consume the same amount of calories as before during the first trimester, roughly 340 extra calories a day during the second one, and roughly 450 extra each day in the third. It’s also important to stay away from certain foods—such as raw foods like eggs, meat or fish, unpasteurized juice, milk, or cheese, and raw sprouts—limit the consumption of caffeine and added sugars, and consume fish and shellfish that is high in healthy fats but low in mercury.

In his post, the OP pointed out that Melody typically followed a healthy diet, and the rotisserie chicken was more of an exception than a rule. However, his mother believed that she shouldn’t consume such foods at all, which is why she threw the food Melody went to three stores to find away and ordered her a salad. Such behavior from the MIL didn’t get her many fans among members of the online community, who didn’t shy away from expressing their opinions in the comments.

People didn’t think the soon-to-be-dad was in the wrong for taking his wife’s side, he replied to some of their comments

That was what stood out to me as well! Like WTH?! I was surprised i didn't see more comments here about that statement. It sure says a lot about OP's mom and how she thinks. I wonder if his brother is married or has a gf as well, since he seems to be on their mom's side.

If anyone, especially my mother-in-law, threw away my pregnancy craving food, my head would spin around and she'd be calling for a priest. Don't f**k with a pregnancy craving. Just don't.

Besides the fact that its cruel and controlling, pregnant women often crave things because their bodies or babies need some specific nutrient. Beyond the comfort and nostalgia, maybe the wife or the baby needed protein.

Not only is the MIL TA, but takeout salad for a pregnant woman isn’t even a good choice because if it’s been sitting out, shredded, for a long time, it can be contaminated. So she essentially threw out safe food and instead bought potentially unsafe food.

I've never understood this thing about people throwing out other people's food because they had a problem with it. I mean, she just threw out a brand-new rotisserie chicken? My mother was so about not wasting food that she would nag me about using the bones to make some broth. That mom is just crazy,

She is an a*****e. And a totally unmitigated one. I threw out someone's food once: out my boss' lunch had been sitting out all day while he was at meetings. Wrong move. Turned out he hadn't eaten all day because he's vegan and the catering wasn't. So yes, I was guilty - criminally and emotionally. The next day I brought a load of vegan food for him. He burst out laughing at the pile - the situation went from hangry to hilarious. Your mother raised you to save food, mine raised me to apologize for everything, LOL.

My ex-wife had cravings for pasta, passata and cheese, I cooked that every other night of the week during her pregnancy with our daughter. If my Mum had a) suggested that her diet was a problem or b) thrown out food intended for her then my Mum would’ve been on a long walk off a short pier. If she had suggested that I was choosing my wife over her then she would’ve been 100% correct. Even now I put the mother of my daughter ahead of some who think they are more important, she may be my ex-wife but she loves and cares for my daughter and my daughter IS the most important person in my life.

My MIL has always been a pain. I visited her (a 200 mile journey) when youngest daughter was 10 days old - I had a university interview re a job 6 months hence, and stayed with her for 2 days. I was breastfeeding, and on the first evening she served a french onion tart, which I explained I couldn't eat as it would upset the baby's digestion. My sister had odd cravings when pregnant, but we often found a good reason for it. As when she wanted licorice and he had to go get some at any time of day or night. We found that licorice helped her keep up the potassium content in her blood that diuretic pills washed out. Besides how can chicken be bad for a pregnant woman? You must need protein to create a baby.

I have never gone the pregnancy route, so my observation is up for discussion and debate. But I believe that interfering with a pregnant woman's cravings is tantamount to coming between a woman with a full bladder and the ladies' room. Death by hanging would be a blessing in comparison to death by the hands of said woman.

It’s not about defining a choice unless you push him to that, but I kind of think when you make your own family, you ARE changing the most important woman in your life to wife instead of FOO. It’s a bizarre gaslighting technique to make it sound like a bad thing…isn’t it?

NTA x100 All in the past as this is old, but for any body reading this, rotisserie chicken is fine. Cooked all the water through, the grease is all the fat dripping off the chicken, loads of protein, and herbs and spices will not do any harm.

Throwing away perfectly good food is what blew my mind- it's not like the craving was for something truly unhealthy or dangerous for the baby like steak tartar, raw oysters, caesar salad with raw egg dressing.. What the heck is wrong with rotisserie chicken? It's not deep fried or slathered in ghost pepper sauce???

My sister had odd cravings when pregnant, but we often found a good reason for it. As when she wanted licorice and he had to go get some at any time of day or night. We found that licorice helped her keep up the potassium content in her blood that diuretic pills washed out. Besides how can chicken be bad for a pregnant woman? You must need protein to create a baby.

Change all your locks and don't give your mother a key, or she will "drop in" when your baby is born. Your wife doesn't need that.

“You’re choosing another woman over me”. That’s something people say to their partner after cheating. Sounds like his mother sees OP has her boyfriend or something, very concerning and disgusting.

If you always defend your mom, and not back up your wife, you will forever be a single man, I mean a mommas boy.. Your mom needs to be no contact until she owns up to what she did and apologizes, then minimal contact. She is toxic af!!

Op needs to go no contact with his mother for six months except for family therapy sessions.

I also wonder if it was made up by someone overseas. Who says "yesterday night" instead of "last night"?

NTA x100 All in the past as this is old, but for any body reading this, rotisserie chicken is fine. Cooked all the water through, the grease is all the fat dripping off the chicken, loads of protein, and herbs and spices will not do any harm.

Throwing away perfectly good food is what blew my mind- it's not like the craving was for something truly unhealthy or dangerous for the baby like steak tartar, raw oysters, caesar salad with raw egg dressing.. What the heck is wrong with rotisserie chicken? It's not deep fried or slathered in ghost pepper sauce???

i know a woman whose pregnancy craving was chalk, and yet monster in-law over here is bitching about a cooked chicken? with how she was with both of OPs partners im under the impression that shes in-love with her own son, either that or she'll end up buring him alive in her wall to stop him from leaving her
