Rocky Steps, Longwood Gardens, and Peddler’s Village. Places like these can get tarnished by the image of Kensington Avenue, Philadelphia, a location that became infamous among the sea of famous sights. From people fighting their drug addictions to truly tragic stories, you shouldn’t write off the avenue as some skid row of Philadelphia.
Kensington Avenue runs 3 miles through what is now a dangerous and crime-ridden neighborhood. Every corner houses a story about a broken person. The streets of Philadelphia, Kensington Avenue, don’t hold back on the scary factor. If there is a problem plaguing modern society, chances are you will find the living form of it in the 3-mile-long stretch.
Photos are the best way to experience the ugly, rugged, and dirty side of Kensington Avenue, Philadelphia. Between 2008 and 2014, the photographer Jeffrey Stockbridge took a series of intimate portraits of people he later put in a book, capturing a side of Philadelphia that is rarely seen or talked about.
In the Kensington Blues project, the residents shared their stories, talking about drugs, prostitution, and other struggles of their lives. Without further ado, let’s look at the photos, discover the difficult hand some people have been dealt, and learn more about the infamous neighborhood in Philly.

Al lives in a house off Kensington Avenue without electricity or running water. He sometimes rents his upstairs bedroom to prostitutes in need of a private location for engaging in sex and drug use.
I will second Nancy E on this one: Mental illness, drugs, including alcohol, cause lives to go awry. It is simply the truth, so why the down'voting?
Petra has a very strong point. Lack of familiar or formal education tend to lead to a "weak" character and to complicate things (the lack of support through) hard phases of life (including public support) may also set the vulnerable context in which abuse of whatever thing takes place. Traumatic externalities such as accidents, jobloss, depression, burn out, family issues, abandonment, and so on. Statistically the great majority of mankind does or has done drugs, "asocial" addiction is not a rule. I see drugs as a social "crutch", this way it can constructively seen like more of a public health and a social issue, i.e. a social rather than an individual problem. Finally, what matters is that the solution to such problems rarely come without some sort of social support and social reintegration, the latter plays a determinant role in patterns recurring drug abuse. FYI fat, sex and sugar can lead to addiction as well.

Nancy, while frederic below made me see your comment in a more positive light, it still really rubbed me the wrong way. Your comment implies that she isn’t fighting hard enough. If someone told my sick grandmother to “fight harder” I might just slap them. People in the throes of pain and mental illness ARE doing the best they can. Some days, just staying alive is the best you can do- trust me on this. Maybe try “keep fighting” or “Don’t give up” in your next comment. Don’t imply that the person isn’t trying hard enough-tell them that you will support them, instead.

Please know that you're not alone in such losses, and that there are always ways to regain balance in your life, should that be something you desire. I truly wish, that you are able to find your soft-place to land, and are able to find your peace again. IN SOLIDARITY, I STAND. You have my respect, and best wishes.

If I can't get money, she gets it, and whatever money we get we share...We need quick money cause we need somewhere to sleep every day. I mean, trust me, we don't want to be out here doing this. This is the last thing I want to do. But I do what I have to do to take care of my sister. Cause she’s all I got and I’m all she's got."
I have gone through all of the comments on these pictures and there have been a lot from a lady named nancy and a man named robert and another account named black dahlia. I get that you like to joke about other peoples weaknesses but what you do not realize is that they have a legitimate problem. an addiction that controls their live. accept it or not but they depend on their drug or the occupation as much as any one else depends on our lungs to breath or water to cleans us. addiction is nothing in the matter to be laughed at or jokes upon, what they need is support and hope to help them deal with the terrible decision they have made in their past. also before you sit there and call someone "disgusting" because of a decision they made in their past, step back and think of the worst thing you have ever done in your life, sure it may not be heroin or prostitution, but it can still be judged and mocked just as much as these people in these pictures.
amen sister. i about threw up reading Black Dahlia's comments.
Load More Replies...Dahlia you are honestly such a disgrace to humanity. You comment on everyone of these posts without knowing what these people have been through in their lives. Your opinion isn't needed nor wanted so stop being so f*cking disrespectful.
Continued.... absurd for people who aren’t addicts or alcoholics or people who have no knowledge around the disease or addiction to speak on it in any way. It’s truly disgusting and makes me infuriated when I see any kind of mokiere when it pertanes to this illness which I have struggled with most of my adult life and thousands of people die from daily. It isn’t because we are weak or stupid or reckless and careless , it is because our brains react insanely differently when drugs or alcohol are injested then someone who is not an addict. That is scientifically proven. So before you go around making a mokiere of something this serious, something this real, something that needs to be acknowledged and dealt with in a real way as it is affected people all over the world in an extreme way , do some f*****g research , have some f*****g compassion. I don’t speak about cancer because I don’t have it and I don’t know what it’s like to have it. So unless you can relate or have any integrity STFU
Amen. I have never been through an addiction to drugs or alcohol, but I know the science behind an addiction and the affects it has on a person's life. It is unbelievably ignorant and insensitive for people who have no idea what it's like to make jokes or insults about an addiction, or say that it isn't really a disease or disorder. It's also extremely stupid for anyone to say they should just stop, because as you said in your other comment, it's nowhere near that easy. That's like telling someone with depression they should just stop being depressed. You cannot just wave a magic wand and watch your addiction to drugs or alcohol disappear, as is true with any disease or disorder. It's not like people want an addiction, so why do people act as if that's how it works? Why do people think they always see advertisements for treatments for people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol? Because it's a real problem! A real problem that tears families apart, kills countless people, and destroys
Load More Replies...Their slumped shoulders are an indication that they have been though a lot in their young lives.
Anyone who is ignorant regarding the DISEASE of addiction needs to stay quiet. I myself am a recovering addict. My favorite line is when people say “why don’t you just stop?” Don’t you think we would have years ago if it was that easy? There is scientific proof that an addicts brain responds emensly differently to drugs and alcohol than a non addict. It is a disease , a disease that kills thousands of people daily because of how hard it is to stop. A mental illness that is real and serious and it makes me sick when people who have no clue decide to mock and talk about it as though it’s some conspiracy. Of course you don’t understand it ! If you aren’t an addict, it would be like trying to describe the color blue to a blind person! There would be no possible way to explain the obsession , the cravings, the chronic behavior associated with addiction to someone who doesn’t respond that way when they injest drugs or alcohol. I really believe that it is entirely inappropriate and absurd
Bless these kids. Such a lost look in their eyes. Hope they find a way off those streets.

They still have children, whom they gave away to a special agency for their protection. "We gave the kids away, people say it's a selfish act, but I think it's the best I could do for their better future," Rachel said.
no, being selfish would be keeping your child in a dangerous situation where not all of the childs needs are being met
There is nothing selfish in recognizing that you can't provide what it takes to raise a child
That is a tough choice. It's not selfish, but preservation. If they stayed with addict parents who know how those kids would turn out. Hopefully this couple can kick the habit and find their children and reconcile for the lost time.
Pat left his one Daughtry long before his addiction wad this bad. .he's a coward, not brave, n I'm an addict of 17yrs, clean for 6..n yes I know him personally. .he's a effing coward!
Load More Replies...I hope this couple can someday get their lives straight and regain custody of their kids. Unfortunately, this reminds me of couple I know who abandoned their children in Florida to move to Colo for the legal pot. In 5 years, they have never gone back. They are not homeless, because they are con artists who exploit the tenant (sqatter) laws and can always find victims. They don't want their kids back. That means responsibility.
It is in no way selfish to make a decision for your children that will allow them to have a better future than what you can provide. Thank you for being responsible and sensible, and may you overcome your problems so that perhaps you can one day regain custody of your children. <3
What is Kensington Avenue, Philadelphia, Known for?
Kensington Avenue in Philadelphia has more than one problem. The problems are more dangerous due to their long-lasting nature and both long and short-term side effects. According to the 2019 City of Philadelphia report, Upper Kensington ranks dead last in health factors. In some cases, health-related metrics in this area are significantly higher than the average numbers for Philadelphia as a whole. Specifically, per 10,000 residents:
- 204.7 violent crimes are committed (average for Philadelphia — 95.7).
- 203.1 lives are lost from injuries (average for Philadelphia — 68.6).
- 8.3 homicides are committed (average for Philadelphia — 1.7).
Upper Kensington also has higher levels of unemployment (27%) and drug overdose deaths (152.1 per 100,000 people, where the city’s average is 44.8).

Thought I might see my niece in one of these photos.... thank you for documenting this world. Difficult to see, terribly tough to experience and survive in. My heart goes out to all.
Beautiful photo serieis. In regards to the trolls Black Dahlia, Robert, and Nancy, it seems that Black Dahlia is the kind of troll who really just wants to get under people's skin because human decency, respect, and kindness have been things that he or she has grown up without. I do hope one day you can find it from someone or something, Black Dahlia. If I was talking to you in person, I would want to have an actual conversation with you on why you feel the need to belittle everything and everyone around you to feel some kind of empowerment in the hopes that perhaps you can find a real source of empowerment by being an inspiration to others and not evil. Nancy and Robert, you seem to just generally hate the people in these pictures as opposed to saying these things on purpose to try to bring everyone down. I would want to have a conversation with you two as to why. I strongly believe that a lot of the people in these pictures are not the disgusting figures that you so believe to be.
Some people just hate their own life so much that they want to drag others down with them. They feel better than the people in those pics, feel like they are worth more than them, while they don't know or understand anything about these unfortunate persons. I don't wish bad to anyone, but maybe Black Dahlia need a wake-up call in the form of a nice long talk with these persons who lived off the streets, addicted to drugs.

"I’ve been raped, and, you know, almost killed really"
It's clearly too late for an abortion but while she was in her first trimester it could have been a choice. I work in a hospital where quite a few of our moms give birth prematurely due to their substance abuse. These babies lbs very limited and painful lives. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
I've seen so many "get an abortion" comments. .. Huh, in case you didn't know, pregnancy isn't the problem. Rape and attempted murder are the problems and she can't just "abort" those away. Plus, who is to say she didn't plan for the pregnancy. Why assume the pregnancy is unwanted, when it's clearly not stated.
When she’s ready to give birth,a hospital will take her, but they always want something in return,to send you to someplace you can’t afford, and I can guarantee, she’ll be gone as soon as she can be, and leave the baby there, which is the best she can do! She won’t want to carry the reminder of her violation every day, and I wouldn’t blame her.
Not to mention, abortions cost money. This person is likely on the street, what makes you think she can afford an abortion.
I'm assuming everyone commenting "She should have had an abortion" or words to that effect have health insurance. Also, why SHOULD she have an abortion?
It's not a healing baby. It's a reminder that she raped & almost murdered Baby. You can always adopt these types of babies.

Carol
A local resident, at the time she was 41. Carol told the photographer that she had been doing heroin for 21 years and it became "the love of her life".
I see myself in her. I was a heroin addict (and anything else I could get) for 20-25 years. I have been clean for 21 years and have a better life than ever. But during my using days I lost my husband (best man on the planet) cuz yeah heroin was my only love, my son, family, everything. I've been working at Denny's for 15 years and proud of it. I am totally self sufficient today. It is so hard. Go to meetings, Narcotics Anon., Alcoholics Anon. get a sponsor, work your program and it will work. When you want it more than anything, it will work. Good luck.
Just to all those trolls judging her on her "breasts" and how she isn't wearing a bra or how she has tattoos, get a life. Don't just sit around judging her on her breasts. Especially those males who have no rights sitting around and talking about womens bodies like that. Incase you didn't know, poverty is a thing and some people in that situation don't have the money to do that. Maybe I'll break down "poverty" for your small judgmental minds, ~poverty~ is when some people don't have that much money. Maybe to not afford things like a BRA or a HOUSE or even electronics like you have there. So if your going to disrespect her like that you may as well stop living in this earth because yours just making at crappy for the rest of us.
I see myself in Carol too. I was a Heroin addict for 25yrs. It isn't a life...just a horrible existence & really difficult to turn things around. People would say to me "As you get older...you will get fed up with this But at the age of 43 I was still using Heroin. I can also relate to the comment "The Love of my life" Because that's the way I felt too. At the age of 43 I left my family & my home town & had "Another" try at getting clean. I'm pleased to say I did & have been clean for 13yrs But it's still a daily struggle and I when I think back...I wish I would've got clean when I was younger. I have lots of regrets & mountains of guilt that I don't deal with very well but I can't change my past...I wish I could. My biggest regret is that I didn't get clean while my wee Ma was alive to see it & I didn't have a relationship with my son who is now 31 with sons of his own But I'm alive & getting by...and getting old which is a privilege lots of addicts don't have.
Keep it up and atay strong Isabel! I'm not a praying man, but I would pray for you. 🙏 Remember there's always help and one of the strongest things a person can do is admit they need help sometimes.

Most of us think of addiction in terms of drug or alcohol. But addiction at its root is pleasure seeking. The great majority of us are no more than two or three decisions away from being the people in this post. I feel for the hard lives their choices have wrought them and hope they get the help they need. Someone some where cares.
Why all of you give a f... what robert, Black Dahlia(anyways long time death) are typing in here, this post is for people on those pictures only and exclusivley for them !!! so stop trying to educate those 2 or worry what they have to say, if the parents couldn't show them the principals, good manners or compassion, probably all of you are going to fail. The veins in Sarah's arms were no good for injection, so she asked Dennis for the drug to be injected to her neck.
FOR ALL OF YOU TROLLS, this is NOT a joke. Addiction is harsh, a trap, it controls you. No matter what you think you can do the drugs take over you and you can't escape. Addiction is real, and it is not something to make fun of, because who knows, it might happen to you and you might lose EVERYTHING. So stop these idiotic comments
This reminds me that one of our family friends used to be a paramedic. One time she came across a patient in a critical state and needed to inject them with something (can't remember what is was). They had to strip the patient because they couldn't find any veins (they eventually found one on their back where the patient couldn't reach). Addiction is so serious and sad :(
Our government needs to do more for people who have mental illness and addictions. This is an illness that needs proper treatment. Trump is not going to help, only hurt programs that provide help.
Meth causes many users to feel a crawling sensation under their skin (called “formication”), causing them to pick obsessively at their face and body. ... The result is acne, sores and scabs that can dramatically alter a meth user's appearance
Oh... This is a sad thing... Please get better, Melissa, the scars of your life are evident to all who see you... You can still save yourself...
Look people, those of you who are saying that you don't inject methamphetamine and you just snort or smoke it, you can cook anything down in a spoon with some water and a cigarette filter and shoot it into your arm or feet or neck or side of your face or tops of your hands. You can get those scars from all sorts of s**t.

Again, addiction keeps your rational mind, on an irrational path, all the time you are looking to score! Why should he be in jail for life? He might have done something so awful, to score, it rates a jail term where he is there the rest of his natural life. If you really want to know, go find out. Go see if you can help in anyway, make his life better! Why, should you be asking this question about him for the rest of your life? Go find out why. The reasons may astound you, as to why, an addict does what they do, and why... go be human, and help. Find out why someone becomes an addict and why some don’t. I think you’ll be quite surprised.

Just shut up, Nancy, OK? Your mean comments have no place on this hopeful list meant to inspire and help people/
Load More Replies...Again, what is so terrible about this comment Nancy made? It's the truth, right? I kinda feel like people are just disliking for the sake of disliking by this point.
Well the life worth living part is offensive, because that makes it sound like they have absolutely no meaning in life right now which might be true in some aspects, but imstead of saying that she could point out that there is hope out there, help that can be accessed, and the possibility of healing. Nancy's posts are rather harsh having a 'what a shame, better them than me' attitude, plus she points out the super obvious which is just obnoxious. Nancy also doesn't seem to understand the impact that drugs and addiction have on people. That's why people are disliking her comments in my opinion
Load More Replies...There's an interview with these two gentlemen posted on kensingtonblues.com (homepage of this project). Paul (left) has been clean for a long time. He got tattoos of his two children in 2005 right after he stopped drinking, and around when he started his rehab. He said whenever he got sober, he looked down to his arms, looked at his children right into their eyes even before he even brought the idea up. These tattoos, his strong will, his belief in Christ, the rehab program helped him stay clean for a long time. He still frequently visits the rehab center to help whoever comes on his path. This pic and the interview were taken during one of these visits. It was such a uplifting and inspiration story.
Paul, those are beautiful children on your arms. Keep doing the do things, and one day those arms will be around them. Anthony, keep holding on to the guys who are working the program. Help others and ask for help when you need it. Good luck for both of you.
You always have hope. You just have to find something worth to change your life. And why these two couldn`t be in 5% of success? Maybe Paul can turn around his life for sake of his children. Nancy is right!
Good job guys for making to the first step of healing! Keep on keeping on!
Unless you have walked in their shoes, don't judge. I don't know a single person who, as a child, said "I want to grow up to be a drug addict". Think before you speak.

With crime going rampant, it’s easy to guess the impact it has on the average health of residents near or in Kensington, Philadelphia. According to the report mentioned above, in Upper Kensington, where the health factors are the worst, the average man lived up to 63.9 years. The average Philadelphia man in 2019 lived up to 72.3 years—that’s a 10-year difference.

"I don’t really ask people for a lot, I get my money, like I don’t like to, cause a lot of times to get people to take care of you, you have to lie to them. And then lead them on and make them think that you're gonna get clean. And then, and then it ends up getting to be too much, where they’re trying to control what you do. And I’d rather just get the money and end it at that with no strings attached cause I don’t need someone following me around, trying to track me down like, trying to drop me off at rehabs and shit."
God, she is just a child. I can only imagine what got her to this point.
Probably a man in her life who sexually abused her

Load More Replies...These posts are really powerful and moving, and show the polarization of people on this topic /coughs pointedly and looks at the other three comments/
so F*in gross all that trash!! With the amount of taxes philli takes from its people they should pay for programs for all these drug addicts & show life style awareness man its so sad to see alot of WOMEN!!! YOUNG WOMEN to me is more concerning (even though all of these people, MEN TOO are heartbreaking to look at) but the younger women all probably have children & believe me its heart breaking to watch people give up their life but its so much more harder to forgive humans with drug issues when their putting children through it.
These areas usually receive a blind eye. City officials, law enforcement, etc. view these areas as "lost causes". There are so many just like this all over the country.
Load More Replies...The shadow in her hair looks like her but yes, even those people that have addiction problems still have guardians that watch over them. I believe this is one of hers. May her guardians help her find her way... And guide her to finding her true purpose in life. Just because you're an addict doesn't mean that your life isn't worth living. We all lose our way, one way or another, just never give up hope for a better future.
Diana With Her Kids
ok, I seriously don't understand what's so horribly wrong with Nancy's comments? I mean, it DOES look like this woman is pregnant again. It's not an insult, it's not making fun, it's just an observation.
dude everybody on nacy for just pointing out what she freaking sees! There is this one lady who drives around the hood areas and give addiction women birth control, to me children should be the most concerning!!! Call these people out you never know when was the last time they feed their children. (Addiction is a disease & sick people cant CANT take care of children PERIOD)
Well, Nancy is right. But since she is not expanding on the mere observation it comes across as callous and mean. Poverty and low education tend to lead to more children at a much younger age, and if there is no support system in place to break the vicious circle it may well be the destiny of her children too. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW! Maybe one of Diana´s children is a future neurosurgeon or a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. And what if she always dreamt of having a large family?
Thing is, when you have more kids than you can afford to clothe or feed...so what if a person dreamed of having a lot of kids? At some point one need to have the judgment to stop because s/he is being selfish by having more. I've had conversations with adults who were sad, (to say the least) about their childhoods because when they were little, they had a mattress to sleep on, no sheets, maybe one blanket... and very little food.
Load More Replies...Many women should not be allowed to bear children. So many. Humanity can not benefit from quantity, only QUALITY.
Birth control needs to be available and affordable to everyone that needs it. I doubt that most people in her situation would choose to have children if they they had the option.

What is the Documentary About Kensington in Philadelphia?
Pictures taken on Kensington Avenue are just one way to experience the life of the place. Independent YouTubers and news services also took cameras to the street. They captured the atmosphere of the avenue with sound and commentary. SBC News repeatedly covered the avenue, advising viewers to avoid the area.
Moreover, a 2023 documentary named Utter Nonsense has drawn attention to the opioid crisis in Philadelphia, specifically highlighting its impact on the Kensington section of the city.

So much contradiction in what he says! First he is "not ashamed" cz he "likes" what he does, then he "will change whenever he feels like it", and then suddenly he brings God in, it all depends on God to "give him the strength to stop and get HELP"...So you know whatever you are doing IS WRONG...Sorry, but people with this kind of b******t won't get any sympathy from me.

The Black Dahlia is just one of those people that was born a moron and die a bigger moron, small things amuse very small minds I'm afraid
I realize these pics and stories represent a certain topic but I can’t help but comment on the backgrounds of the pics taken. This one for instance troubles me to the core. Look at the litter, debris, graffiti and the deterioration of what was once a beautiful building and even landmark of some sort. By the looks of the design, steps, column and age of the building it may have been owned and operated by the Government at one point. Even if not, why the hell is it in this condition and why would it not be cleaned up by local city Government ? Where’s priority, respect and the love of ones surroundings that this and other areas are ignored ? DISGRACEFUL ! As for the poor soul in this and other pics in this photo documentary I pray they get help and find a better life...
