The Ginger Project: My Portraits Fight Red-Head Discrimination
I created a photo series in order to change the common view of red-haired people. They are quite often discriminated against or bullied just because of their natural hair color and unusual features, such as freckles or pale skin.
Redheads, especially kids at school, are having hard times when others are making fun of them or calling them names just because of their ginger hair. That’s why I wanted to show redheads and their unconventional beauty in a portrait photography series called “The Ginger Project”.
I know that “ginger” might be offensive sometimes, but this is the reason I chose this name so that every red-haired person would be able to say “I am ginger” and be proud of it. The beautiful photos aim to change these stereotypes and to show how appealing people are. Also, it encourages everyone to be proud of their uniqueness.

Share on FacebookI have always thought red haired people are beautiful. More beautiful than the average person.
I agree with you, Deena. Beautiful and unique. In my opinion, they are adored. More discriminated are poorly dressed people, especially kids. And those last are rejected by equals and adults. I think this could be better theme.
Load More Replies...Hello, for someone who want to know... I am the boy on top of this project :)
So, an honest question, Volta - did you experience discrimination and bullying? More than what a child normally experiences growing up since most kids are bullied a little by idiots. I'm asking because I've never known redheads to be bullied. I've got a few red haired friends and 2 red haired nephews and they never were bullied.
Load More Replies...You should change the title to read 'Red-head' not 'Read-Head' if possible
Darn! I wish I had caught that. :-) I used to dye my hair red. All the portraits are of sweet faces.
Load More Replies...I am a ginger and to be honest and trying not to sound conceited, but as I was growing up, I was always proud to be a redhead as we said in those days. People loved my hair and I always got many compliments, like "your hair is like spun gold." I am now 60 as of the 24th this month of August and I still have my very long ginger hair and I feel beautiful, and still get many compliments, I have to agree with Alice K Klatt. Those who would be more discriminated against are those who dress poorly.
Diversify your meaning of red head... other ethnicities have the most beautiful red heads and they are not represented at all in this series
Ginger is a great color and, nowadays, a lot of people get their har dyed just to have this color. Red haired poeple are, truly, beautiful.
I've never experienced red hair discrimination in real life. I think it's made up. Sure I've heard jokes and get called red, but no more than I get made fun of for my big butt, all in good humor. Red heads always seem to be like a fantasy for people. We are prized for our copper locks, more than despised for them.
Newsflash: EVERYBODY gets made fun of at school. Anyone who makes a mistake, anyone who says the wrong thing, wears the wrong thing, thinks the wrong thing. Redheads don't have a monopoly on that.
I think that anyone who is perceived as different by the majority of the kids will be made fun of. Be it better grades, quiet personality or perhaps red hair...
Load More Replies...I too have always thought red haired people are beautiful. If they get bullied it is probably envy.
Beautiful. Do you know that all redheads are descended from ... The Vikings! You are all warriors :)
I have 6 children, 2 boys and 4 girls. One of my girls is a redhead/ ginger! she was born 2months early, and was quite a fighter. Today at 12 yrs old she's such a little firecracker and unfortunately teased by her siblings for her red hair and being the odd ball of the family. Don't worry, she finds very creative ways to get back at them. We all love her and wish she would love herself!
She will as soon as she discovers her unique power, which, at 12, could be any minute.
Load More Replies...I wish I was a red-head. The gingers are truly beutiful, unique and rare. I'm proud of them :D
i just want to know the name of the guy in the fifth picture.. Anyone know? :))
I'm a natural born red head. Picked on in school over my hair color and skin tone as a child... and teen... now that I'm older i finally appreciate my uniqueness. Glad to be blessed among the 2% of the world and born with this fiery flame inside and out.

I am a red head, and I experienced tons of bullying growing up, to the point that i just hated having freckles and orange hair (I shaved my head all through high school). My experience might have been a little extreme since I'm actually Hispanic. So growing up in a country where red heads are kinda rare, made me an easy target. Now that I'm raising my kids and my son's hair is as orange as orange can be; i feel like those people were just jealous.
I, on the other hand, find red-heads exceedingly beautiful, attractive and sexy. I spent part of my life trying to find a 'ginger' counterpart to fall in love with, but alas, it was not to be. The one true one I met was spoken for; the rest were very bad dye jobs... Anybody who harasses red-heads is a blind, not seeing, unfeeling monster.
When did people start bullying redheads!?!? It's like sometimes people just have to discriminate. Red hair is beautiful and rare imagine if those bullies had a redhead children.
I LOVE red hair. So much that I used to die my daughter's hair with henna when she was 4. Mine is too dark. Wish I had red hair myself.
I can't just imagine which kind of people can hate or discriminate anybody with this color of hair O.o Even if I was a small child I love this color of hair and I was green from envy when I saw anybody with this color of hair .
Proud to be ginger!!! My boys have the most beautiful strawberry blonde hair too!!
Only in the last few years did I realize that red-headed people were treated so poorly. This is so messed up.
I have brown skin and whenever I see a ginger I think "I wish my hair looked like that". I didn't know that they were bullied for something as small as hair color. I think that red hair is beautiful and anyone that has it should wear it with pride.
i have never understood all the hoopla about red heads. they are some of the most beautiful people in the world. i just have to say most people have to be jealous. i wish i were a true red head.
I don't get it. Why would anyone bully them? I've always been fascinated by redheads (and slighty jealous lol!). The few redheads i've met were hard to look away from. I was capitivated by their rare beauty. I don't even know how to explain it. I am finding it very difficult to get why people would mock them. Some people are just impossible to understand
Don't stare into their eyes for more than 3 seconds or their picture will steal your and add it as a freckle to their collection of souls :-P
I was a ginger as a child. My hair darken as I grew up but still have some red highlights. I told my husband I wanted a boy, a girl and a redhead. Our first child is a boy, the second a girl and the third was a red haired boy with blue eyes, pale skin and a dimple. He"s proud to call himself a ginger.
I have always felt special because of being a ginger. And I have always identified with cats. I have to agree with Mark Twain, “While the rest of the species is descended from apes, redheads are descended from cats.”
how is that possible, it is so rare here that people dye their hair to become red- head , also it is so cool as a person I actually like red-head girls. :o
I don't understand why someone would bully someone else because of hair or skin color. I just find it dumb... I adore redheads. They are very unique and rare. I actually dye my hair copper for 3 years now. It's a beautiful color and the ones who have it naturally should be hella proud of it.
I never knew red haired people were discriminated on the basis of the colour of their hair! This must be a new kind of discrimination. Next it'll be black hair discrimination or white hair discrimination or having no hair discrimination.....the list of discriminations is endless.
I always wanted to have red hair ._. Super pale skin, freckles, light coloured eyes - they are all beautiful and I would love if I'd had them ._.
Those eyes... now understand why they suck your soul... :D
I always think they have the most beautiful hair..i really don't understand why some people bully them for who they are..
I love red hair. I think it's so awful what red heads so entires go through. One time, I colored my hair this color, like a dark strawberry blond light copper. I was mortified at the disgust this one drunk guy had towards me. His remark was just awful..I couldn't even believe it. I think he was sort of a ginger, too. That's the weird part. Be yourselves!
I ADORE red hair! And in all varieties and shades, all the way from strawberry blonde to deep auburn. I don't understand why anyone would look down on it! It's rare, and it's gorgeous!
I have strawberry blonde hair that eventually darkened into a dark blonde color. When it was noticeably blonde, people would judge my personality as ditsy or slutty. A year ago, i put henna in my hair which has brought back my strawberry blonde coloring that hasn't faded still thankfully. Immediately, people would judge me as prideful or confident. I even received many high fives from random people. I found that lemon juice and keeping my hair healthy keeps the red coloring, and it is the best decision I've had. I think we need to break the blonde profile as people underestimate the participation and brilliance of a person born with blonde hair. Judgement placed on a person in any way including hair, i.e. color, style, shape, texture, should not determine the expected social position or personality of an individual's spirit.
there is nothing more beautiful then red headed people. i have two second cousins that have hair like the cartoon figure in BRAVE and they are fantastic.
I am not a ginger. I am a natural redhead. I have never felt any negative vibe because of my hair color. I have had a glorious ride of a life, and I feel my red hair has been a blessing, a trademark, and a bunch of fun.
What about those with naturally red hair that don't have pale skin? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/photographs-redheads-of-color_55db9929e4b0a40aa3abf017

We DO call ourselves Ginger. It's not cool if you do. It's the G-word. lol
This is awesome. I'm a ginger, when I was a kid I hated it because I got made fun of. I always had to wear more/stronger sunscreen than all the other kids. I have worse allergies, sensitive skin and dry skin. Kids used to act like they were putting ketchup in my hair because "it's not like I could tell a difference anyway." Kids can be very cruel.
I've always wanted red hair and freckles, and I am sad to hear that they are often bullied.
I do not believe they are and I have years of experience to back that up.

Why do you say red heads have unusual features? I don't agree. Natural red heads are are unique and beautiful and interesting, but I've never found their features any more unusual than any other non red headed person. That was a weird comment. Everyone of your chosen subjects here are very appealing and none seem unusual to me. Nor any other red head I've encountered.
Thank you for doing this. My whole childhood I was bullied because of my hair.. much love. ♡

I am a ginger and proud to be one. I was horribly bullied in primary school, every day was a torment of teasing, name calling and isolation. Nobody wanted to be my friend or sit next to me because they "feared" of getting my germs. It was horrible - I hated going to school. It is amazing how much it knocks a child's confidence. It took me a long time to feel accepted. Looking back on those days, i think it has made me a stronger person today.
I have always dreamed to have gf with ginger hair. But there is no ginger girls left out there.
I am a ginger and proud of it, I was bullied as a kid and teased as an adult, but I would never change being a ginger.
Things are changing, but so slowly... Look at Bartek Borowiec, famous male model, with long beautiful red hair !
I have never noted this descrimination in the states. I married a red-head and have dyed my hair red. The hair product shelves are full of red hair dye.
Ginger discrimination?... spare me, kids always make fun of the most different kid. In school I was the only white kid in a school full of hispanics, it was just fun ribbing & people have become so pathetically PC in this world. ...and gingers are just a step above albinos anyway and will burn in the sun
gingers are for sure among most beautiful natures wonders. just wonderful.
Reminds me of the manufactured discrimination against trans-this or trans-that. What discrimination (except what children practice early in life.) These photographs indicate that people aren't very pleased with their hair color. Deena Bunyak seems to be happy. Use her picture.
I had no idea that people behaved this way. I've always thought red hair is absolutely beautiful and have always wished my hair was that gorgeous color.
Love red hairs! always have and will. Look at the number of people dyeing their hair in red tones!!! :) :)
