People Are Cracking Up At These 35 Tweets Posted In Response To The Pope Calling People Who Don’t Have Kids Selfish
Pope Francis was chosen as the head of the Catholic Church in 2013 when the previous pope, Benedict XVI, resigned due to health issues. And he became one of the most open popes to different perspectives on Catholic doctrine in history.
But in the last General Audience, Pope Francis expressed his opinion on people not having children and that caused quite a big reaction on the internet. The Pope called people who would rather have pets than children selfish and in a sense, less human, so it’s understandable why it didn’t sit well with a lot of Twitter users.

Family planning is a privilege. You are calling poor people selfish for having kids when they are the least likely to have access to abortion and birth control because of religious interference in government. It would be really nice if everyone could afford to make better decisions about their future and family life, but many can't. You need to exercise better critical thinking before you criticize people.

Every Wednesday morning, the Pope holds a General Audience which is not meant for a specific group of people but everyone who would like to come and hear what the pope has to say and who want to receive benedictions in various languages.
His last audience was this Wednesday and a clip of it went viral because of what was said. The pope chose to talk about how young people are more often choosing to substitute children with pets and in his opinion, that is selfish.

Or the ones driving Rolls Royce and living in opulant mansions in many countries. 10 of the 34 active archbishops in the United States live in buildings worth more than $1 million. Or the german bishop that spent $43 million renovating his home, including $2.4 million for bronze framed windows. At this point these people have nothing to do with God but they still have people blindly following and giving them money.

I'm kind of convinced that the Church doesn't allow priests to marry because then the Church would have to pay the priests more for the care of their families to live, plus college for their kids, pensions for their wives, etc. They want utter devotion from their priests without having to pay a lot for it.

Several people are assuming that the Pope is a virgin. Keep in mind that all priests were teenagers first, and it is highly likely they have "history." Still, not having kids and staying sane is selfish? - Nope.

The Pope believes that only parenthood can make a person feel fulfilled. Because children will be the ones who will close your eyes and there will always be someone who will take care of you when you are old, which sounds like kind of a selfish reason to have kids.
“It’s a risk, yes, but having a child is always a risk, regardless if it’s a biological child or adopted, but it’s riskier to not have them at all. It’s riskier to negate fatherhood and motherhood.” The risk is in that a woman who negates motherhood, either spiritual or material, is not complete; she is missing something essential. The Pope asks people to think about that.

Out of all the remarks to the Pope, this is by far the worst idea ever.
It’s actually a very unexpected statement to hear from Pope Francis as he has always surprised us by being so liberal, loving and inclusive. He has said that atheists also can go to heaven, he accepted that people with non-traditional orientations are not evil and their decisions are not for him to judge, he doesn’t deny science and he even thinks that women who have had an abortion deserve forgiveness.

I am the mother of an autistic son that has grown up and spends most of his time trying to be a regular person. The doctors have told me, with our family history, another child will most likely be autistic too. We got lucky with my son in that he is very high functioning ASD. The next one may not be. So I should run the risk of having a child with autism again just to satisfy some virgin that's never had to even babysit someone else's kid, normal or disabled? Yeah..go skip rope, Pope!

Exactly. Imho having kids should be discouraged unless people have chosen it. It should not be the default path expected of everyone. Kids need to be enthusiastically wanted and loved. My heart absolutely breaks for children who are unwanted. Religious people pretend to care about children, but they give no thought whatsoever to what a child's life will be like after they're born.

First of all - it is HAVING children that IS SELFISH - because you decide you want them. Possible Child has no say there, and many of us aren't happy that we are here. We have to work our asses off to pay for living - and why exactly? I wasn't asked if I want to be born to this world, so why my parents woulsn't pay me my rent, food, amenities and stuff if they chose to have me, huh?

Because Pope Francis has a reputation of being non-judgemental, judging people for not having children was unpredicted. What bothered people was that he called childless couples selfish when the people who decide to not have children think that on the contrary, they are being responsible. If they are not in a good financial state to have children, they don’t want to have a child and not be able to take care of it. Also, they realize that the world is already overpopulated and it’s becoming more polluted here, so having more children would add to the problem.

A tad wrong - Henry VIII wanted a divorce from Catherine of Aragon and asked Pope Clement VII, the Pope, who, for various, mostly political, reasons said no, so Henry threw his toys out of the pram and thus started the dissolution of the monasteries, kicking all Papists and their allies out of the United Kingdom and made himself the head of the church - hence the Church of England

The mistake here is thinking he's a virgin. Many religious orphanages contained the children priests had with nuns. But I guess like everything else they can just pray and ask for forgiveness and become virgins again as such is their reasoning for everything else. It also speaks volumes coming from that a religious organization who took kids from their families and abused them to death would still be giving family and parenting advice.

Day after day, hour after hour there are TV appeals for helping children in Yemen, money so that children can access clean water in Africa, money for Indian girls to have a safe sleeping place at night, and so on. I'm from a generation that thought all this was finished in WWII. I am the child of both service people, air force, mother from England father from Canada, married 1942. Had me late in life, so I can honestly say that I have watched it all burn from 1963 to now. Now that is a horrifying vision and life to behold after all this time. I suffered from old values, old traditions, old manners, old morals and I can say I am witnessing what my parents witnessed in WWII. The world has gone crazy, greedy beyond any religion, bible verse, narccissts and neo whatever, gangs and all those good people did not do a thing to check this from happening. I lost sympathy with the catholic church when I was 14 and watched my devoted parents seek help after they their alms (pennies and dollars for confession in the collection plate for decades) and watched them both get destroyed by the religion that said it cared and loved them and families. Sorry for long diatribe, I'm just feeling such despair

Just about everything I needed to learn about parenting, I learned through having my dog. He taught me, and I taught him for 14 years until 1.2.22. So the pope can put that in his pipe.
The Pope's statement might have hurt a lot of faithful people who looked up to him and who used his words as guidance because inevitably Catholics who don't want children exist. We asked what would psychologist Gretchen Kubacky would say to such a person and her answer was that the reality is that religion doesn't dictate our lives anymore.
She said, "I would note that, while I am not a religious authority, matters of faith, morality, and personal ethics are often complex, and inadequately addressed by the blanket statement of the Pope. Religion should function as a guideline, particularly in cases where there may be conflicting medical, financial, or emotional needs at play. This was not a personal judgment on one individual."

Yup. I don't have kids. But I dedicate a lot of time helping the next generation. I volunteer with troubled teens and use animal therapy to help them center themselves and get their s**t back on track. I couldn't do this if I had kids. They are my kids.

And some have a ton of kids and horrifyingly abuse them. The basic thing is, don't take on anything, child or pet that you cannot properly care for if you have a choice. I had to raise three alone. I thank God for His help. I had lots of it. It takes a while lot of people too. Teachers, friends, family ( which I had almost zero of) and going into it, I was absolutely SURE that I had the wherewithal to do it, all the way through to college. Stuff happens. You don't always know. But I came out of it with three marvelous humans, citizens of the earth, caring of their community, and scared to death to have kids for the most part.

I usually like Pope Francis' unorthodox stances, but he is only human and will not be infallable. The statement (if he is saying it the way it is seems to be conveyed) is kinda judgy disregarding the laws and rights to free will and I assume he will realize his error (at least I would hope) Everyone effs up, even the pope. He isn't perfect and he isn't a God.

Catholic church is not christian, its organised crime: aggressive tax prevention, extreme child abuse (until today), mass murder (esp. in the Middle Age), conspiration with countless dictators and mass murderers(incl. the 3rd Reich), etc. Countlees crimes have been committed by these criminals.
As mentioned In Pope Francis eyes people who don't have children lose a part of their humanity. He thinks that women are not complete and lack something if they don't become mothers. A lot of people share the sentiment and often when a woman says she will not be having children meets them with judgement and tries to convince them that they will regret it later as being mothers is in their blood.
Dr. Gretchen Kubacky is not sure about that. She has not read any reliable research that would claim that "women have an inborn maternal instinct or 'mother's intuition.' Many women are aware that they are poorly suited to parenting, mothering, or nurturing other human beings - or perhaps that they simply prefer a different life or lifestyle. To impose a threat of this nature - that one will be filled with regrets and unfulfilled desires without a child or children - is simply wrong."

It’s hard to say if more people now don’t want children in comparison to the past because maybe now they feel less pressure to have them and a few decades ago, it was just unthinkable to not have a child as it was just a stage of life you must reach.
The Pope sees this new awareness of what people really want as a problem, but what do you think of Pope Francis’ statement and what do you think about the current pope in general? We would love to hear opinions, regardless of whether you have children or not, want them or not.

Some people, myself included, are just not cut out to raise children... be it lack of interest, lack of means, lack of health. Is it better for a person who does not want to have children, to force themselves to have children and try to raise them when they're really not wanted? The CHURCH is the last institution that should be preaching to us about children.

It sounded to me like a schill question from someone trying to bait the liberal pope into saying something liberal about this laughably false choice. I'm glad he didn't say something like " God loves all his children no matter what their life choices are". this would have caused another kind of ruccus -- a storm of protest from those right wingers claiming that this liberal pope will have us blessing unions between pets and people and so on... I remember my older brother telling our mother that Jesus was Jewish. My blindly, ignorant mother proclaimed that Jesus was not a Jew! According to dear old mom, Jesus was Christian and the first catholic pope. People like my mother make up the vast majority of the congregation. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Can't this man (I use the word loosely) understand that some people know that they would not and could not be a mother to a child. I would not want to subject a child to me. But put a baby squirrel in my hands I will and have fed it every 2 hours keeping it warm and keeping it on my chest so it can feel and hear a heartbeat I know I'm weird but I don't think I could do this with a child -A ND I DON'T KNOW WHY.

We could consume less but we will still consume too much of the things that are harmful. For example electric cars won't solve enough problems, just create different ones. They were. Or in a sort of halfway house off church premises, which then put even more children in danger as their exposure to them was significantly increased. Several houses were next to schools and parks. Because they were relocated to another part of the country or city the accusations they faced weren't public knowledge as the Catholic governing body would say they entered treatment or retired.

My pets make having children easier. My cats don't expect anything from me and still sit on my lap for purrs and cuddles and until recently my senior dog, who just passed, was the sweetest reason to keep active. Children mostly drain my energy because of what society expects of them. And for what? So they can be bored at school and be told that the one thing they utterly enjoy is stupid by adults. Bleeeeh. F that. I love my kids, but I don't love this world at this point. There are rays of hope and sunshine, but this pope is not one of them.

Selfish? Bro...we're approaching 8 billion people and dwindling resources. Also, the cost of living is through the roof...just like sunlight and the Popemobile. If someone wants to have kids that's their choice. Selfish...I'll say seeing suffering and global superpowers fighting and killing without a word is selfish.

Exactly. Selfish is to have children, it is a valid choice but it is a selfish one. Specially if the parents dont have money or they can pass on diseases. Endometriosis has ruined my life and its likely genetic. Reproducing would be extremely selfish because my children could suffer as I do. Not having them is the nicest thing I can do for them.

This having children pressure is awful. There is nothing in this world I dream about more, than having my own child. Unfortunately I experienced miscarriage last year. My cat was comforting me all the time. I cried to my mum and somehow she said it is my fault because I "wore skinny jeans in the past". My parents even told me that they won't love me if I don't give them a grandchild. My cat do not judge, just love me as I am. I spent all Christmas crying for my lost baby and I was told I ruined everyone's time. How having a cat as a comfort, friend and support is selfish? JUDGING OTHER PEOPLE IS SELFISH
