Book lovers, we’ve all been there. You’re cozied up with a brand-new book, ready to escape into another world, when bam!—a typo smacks you in the face. Or worse, you turn a page, only to realize it’s missing entirely. Nothing shatters the bliss of reading quite like these bookish betrayals. Sure, we can laugh about them later, but in the moment? It’s enough to make you dramatically close the book

Today, the Bored Panda team scoured the internet to find some of the most triggering book crimes that readers have shared online. Whether it’s peculiar mistakes in a children’s book (yes, the irony) or entire missing pages, these moments are enough to make any bibliophile scream. Keep reading to see if you can stomach these bookish horrors! And don’t forget to check out our interview with Karishma Kothari, a first-time author who knows a thing or two about the struggles of writing, and the inevitable (but painful) tiny mistakes that slip through.

Here's a shocker: it's not at all what it looks like! The book is part of a series all dealing with psychological issues (in this case, father fixation) and would probably have been used by a psychiatrist. From what I can see, the psychology is very much out of date (for a start, it's assuming there's literally zero sex education) and this book is of academic interest only now, but it's NOT modelling the thinking shown in the picture as a good thing. The story takes the little girl through her emotional confusion and into a healthier relationship with her parents.

I don't know how it is done now, but book printers used to print 16 or 32 consecutive pages on a very large sheet of paper, then fold it several times to about the size of a book page, cut three edges, and voila - one signature of pages in the correct order and orientation. One possibility is that the large sheet was folded wrong, the sheet was put into the folding machine upside down or wrong edge first. But I'm just making an educated guess.

The joy of flipping through untouched pages, the thrill of diving into a new story—it’s unmatched. But along with that joy comes the occasional heartbreak. A typo. A missing page. A weird formatting error that makes you pause mid-sentence. It’s frustrating, isn’t it?

“For a non-writer, it might seem easy—just put words together. But it’s not that easy. It’s an entire process to put together words that make sense. Writing isn’t just about stringing sentences together. It’s about choosing the right words, crafting meaningful phrases, and making sure everything flows. It’s a long, intricate process that demands patience and skill.”

She explained how easy it is for small mistakes to go unnoticed during the writing process.“When you’re in the flow of writing, you might not focus on the spelling. Your brain moves faster than your fingers, and before you know it, you’ve typed something incorrectly without even realizing it. These tiny mistakes don’t seem like much at the time, but later? They stick out like a sore thumb.”

We do have Asterix in Latin and many other children's books, since 45 years, because Latin is taught at school from class 5 to 12/13, which is from +/- 10y to +/- 17y. So there is a solid market for this. The Latin certificate is necessary to enter medical universities, so many take it along, because it is easier than a crash course.

Editors play a crucial role in refining a book before it reaches readers. “That is why editors are crucial. They bring fresh eyes to the manuscript, catching things the writer might have overlooked. No matter how careful an author is, self-editing isn’t enough. Editors ensure clarity, consistency, and, most importantly, a polished final product.”

At the same time, she emphasized the importance of the author taking responsibility for their work. “But I believe the book is your baby, and nobody knows it better than you, so you should check everything. Even after an editor has worked their magic, a writer needs to go over their book again. Editors help, but at the end of the day, your story, your message, and your voice matter most. A final review by the author ensures that nothing gets lost in the editing process.”

Not sure what this chart if going to help with other than spelling of the number and the student wondering for the rest of their life, as to what happened to the teens. The early years can be so influential on a young mind. I thought for many years that Mom was spelled Mum since I got it right on my first grade work.

No book starts out perfect, no matter how skilled the writer is. “The first draft is never perfect. And it never is. The first draft is messy, filled with inconsistencies, and often makes no sense when reread. But that’s part of the process. Writing is rewriting, and every great book goes through multiple drafts before it’s ready for the world.”

It may predate that by a century. 'Gooaey goosey gander' may be a reference to the soldiers of Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army, who were known to goose-step when they matched. Cromwell was a strict, puritanical protestant who made church attendance mandatory and would send troops to arrest people who were reported for missing services.

She acknowledged that fixing errors after publication isn't always possible. “The cost to reprint can be higher. So you let that one small error be. It’s not ideal, but there’s nothing you can do. Printing a book isn’t cheap, and reprinting it for a minor typo isn’t always practical. So, sometimes, authors have to live with tiny imperfections. It’s frustrating, but it’s reality. And honestly, as long as the story is good, does one small mistake really matter?” she added.

Representatives of the popular Times Roman font recently announced a shortage of periods and have offered substitutes—such as inverted commas, exclamation marks, and semicolons—until the crisis is overcome by people such as yourself, who, through creative management of surplus punctuation, can perhaps allay the constant demand for periods, whose heavy usage in the last ten years (not only in English but in virtually every language in the world) is creating a burden on writers everywhere, thus generating a litany of comments, among them: What the hell am I supposed to do without my periods? How am I going to write? Isn't this a terrible disaster? Are they crazy? Won't this just lead to misuse of other, less interesting punctuation??? — Steve Martin, "Times Roman Font Announces Shortage of Periods"

Perfection is every writer’s dream, but some things are simply beyond control. “As a writer, you want your book to be perfect, but sometimes things are not in your control. No matter how much effort goes into it, something always slips through. And maybe, just maybe, that’s what makes books so beautifully human.”

Books are love. Books are life. And sometimes, even with the occasional typo or misplaced comma, a great book is still a great book. So, fellow book lovers—tell us, which of these moments made you laugh, sigh, or cry inside just a little bit?

I see Eragon and I see Hungarian and I'm happy. Did you know they filmed the (horrible) movie adaptation in Hungary? I was hiking with my family (I was still a child) and we ran into the movie set. We asked, and they told us the title. Back home we looked it up, my parents bought me and my sister the first book and we were obsessed. Then the movie came out and we decided it doesn't even exist. But we read all of the books to the point they are completely ruined, still on my shelf this day, only the dustjackets keeping them together. Might actually reread them now (in ebook format.)

It's not a "bootleg Disney book". Disney doesn't own the character of Rapunzel. It's in the public domain. This one is on the customer, for not understanding the difference between a public domain character, and a copyrighted Disney film (Tangled).

"W is for Whale, who has a strong tail. X is for Xylophone, can you strike the right tone? Y is for Yogurt, it's great as dessert. Z is for Zebra, friends with Harry Hyena." Best I could come up with - I've never been great at rhyming, unfortunately.

W is for whale, she lives in the ocean. X is for xylophone, music in motion. Y is for yoghurt, it tastes oh so sweet. Z is for Zebra, He'll dance to the beat! There. That took me about 20 seconds to come up with.

This can happen if the text on the lower part of the page is an extended footnote. Hence the separating bar. Not ideal, sure, but sometimes necessary.

So I have the same box set and sure enough, the Bantam Books logo is bigger on the fifth one. However my copy has the top and bottom stripes aligned perfectly with the other books and the stripe in the middle is just a tiny bit higher than it should be. This makes me think the cover of this book was also badly cropped, apart from having minor design inconsistencies.

Including ads in books was a common practice among some publishers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I've used them more than once as input for AbeBooks searches. The ads would be at the end though, not in the middle.
